Mexico City Congress session on Monday ended in chaos as opposition and ruling party legislators clashed over the appointment of a single head for a new transparency institute, ignoring committee-approved guidelines.

Tensions flared minutes after the Board of Directors announced the result, as opposition National Action Party (PAN) deputies began shoving, slapping and pulling others' hair in the legislative chamber. The dispute prompted colleagues to intervene.

PAN deputy Claudia Perez criticised the chaos, saying the opposition had warned they might take over the legislative podium in protest of the committee agreements.

"A deputy saying, 'if you want violence, this is what you get, this is what you wanted, this is what you are going to have.' And then two more against one person, a deputy who was also injured," said Claudia Perez.

"Today, the intention was to defend democracy, to generate balance. That is why we took the podium. From day one, we said we were going to be in resistance," added the deputy.

After the incident, PAN legislators accused the Morena majority of pushing through decisions without dialogue and using authoritarian tactics to approve key reforms, especially those affecting accountability and oversight in Mexico.

"We are not leaving without saying that the corrupt, the violent and those who are destroying this country are you, Morena," said Deputy Claudia Perez.

Later, the Mexico City Congress issued a public statement strongly condemning all physical aggression within the parliamentary chamber.
