00:57One of the most heartbreaking losses is Rabbi Eli Schlenger, a 41-year-old father of five

01:04and assistant rabbi at Kabad Bondi.

01:07Kabad confirmed he was among those killed while helping run the Hanukkah event.

01:12British-born but long-rooted in Sydney, Rabbi Schlenger was known for visiting prisons,

01:22caring for the elderly and supporting struggling families,

01:26a man described as lighting the community with kindness, grace and generosity.

01:32Another survivor of the attack is a man who escaped Hamas' October 7 atrocities after living in Israel for 13 years.

01:41He arrived in Australia just two weeks ago hoping to help the Jewish community fight anti-Semitism.

01:48Bloodied and shaken, he described the scene as an absolute bloodbath, recalling how children and elderly worshippers fell around him,

01:59a horror he never imagined witnessing again.

02:04Among the 15 people killed was also a Holocaust survivor, someone who lived through history's darkest chapter

02:16only to be struck down at a peaceful celebration.

02:20A 10-year-old girl was also murdered, one of four children taken to hospital

02:25as stunned families ran for cover during 10 minutes of relentless gunfire.

02:31Another victim was Peter Meyer, a retired police officer and beloved rugby volunteer.

02:43He was at the event capturing photos, doing what he loved when the gunfire erupted.

02:49His club called him a legend, a man who spent decades serving others

02:54only to be struck down after surviving years on the front line as an officer.

02:59French national Dan Elkayem in his late 20s also lost his life.

03:05Working in Sydney with NBC Universal, he had come to the beach simply to celebrate Hanukkah.

03:11A talented soccer player and a popular teammate, his club described him as extremely gifted

03:21In total, 40 people were hospitalized, including police officers and several children.

03:29Police say the attackers, a father-son pair, fired on a crowd of a thousand gathered for the first night of Hanukkah.
