Hong Kong leader John Lee said he welcomed the guilty verdict against media tycoon and pro-democracy activist Jimmy Lai, calling the ruling a demonstration of legal justice and a safeguard of the city’s core values. Lai was convicted of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces under China’s national security law.
Lee said the government and judiciary would continue to fulfil their responsibility to protect national security without intimidation. Senior security officials also expressed support for the court’s decision.
