Hong Kong pro-democracy media tycoon Jimmy Lai was on Monday (Dec 15) found guilty on two counts of foreign collusion and of seditious publication, in one of the Chinese city's highest-profile national security trials.

00:00Hong Kong's high court on Monday found pro-democracy activist and media boss Jimmy Lai
00:07guilty of working with foreign forces to harm national security.
00:11It also found the 78-year-old guilty of conspiracy to publish seditious material.
00:17These charges come from a tough national security law put in place by China
00:21and could leave him facing life in prison.
00:24The case has drawn international scrutiny of Hong Kong's judicial independence
00:28amid a years-long crackdown on rights and freedoms.
00:32Judge Esther Toh told the crowded courtroom there was no doubt
00:36that Lai had felt strong anger toward China for many of his adult years.
00:41Hong Kong security police chief Steve Lee welcomed the ruling and called the judges professional.
00:47Lai had pleaded not guilty to all charges.
00:49He started the now-closed Apple Daily newspaper
00:52and has been one of the strongest critics of China's Communist Party leadership.
00:56He has already spent five years in jail pending the outcome of his case
01:01and will be sentenced at a later date.
01:03Lai's lawyer, Stephen Kwan, said any decision on an appeal would come after the sentencing.
01:09A pre-sentencing hearing where Lai can plead for lenience is scheduled for early next year.
