00:20I'm Kevin Burkhardt.
00:21Tom you look at this from an
00:22offensive standpoint.
00:23The Lions the number one scoring
00:24team in the league.
00:25The Rams are number four.
00:27There are superstars all over
00:28the field.
00:28We can have an old fashioned
00:30shootout my friend.
00:31I'm so excited to be here today
00:33calling this game to my favorite
00:35offenses in the NFL both
00:37quarterbacks Matthew Stafford
00:39Jared Goff playing at an elite
00:40level.
00:41They're in total control.
00:42They can be efficient.
00:43They can be explosive.
00:45They got run games.
00:46They got past games.
00:47Neither of them turn the ball over.
00:49This is just awesome football.
00:50I think one advantage the Rams do
00:52have today is the use of the
00:53tight end groupings when they put
00:55three tight ends on the field.
00:56It really simplifies the Lions
00:58defensive coverages allows McVeigh
01:00and Stafford to really dial in to
01:02perfect plays.
01:02That could be the difference
01:03today.
01:04So if you love football if you
01:05love offense like I do being here
01:08today at SoFi there's no place I'd
01:10rather be.
01:10We should see a lot of that today
01:12but the Lions look they're in good
01:13position but they're looking for
01:14some consistency aren't they Tom
01:16Rinaldi.
01:16They are KB urgency and injury.
01:18Those have to be the headlines for
01:20Detroit.
01:21We have to find a way to stack
01:23wins and we need to play better
01:24than we did against Dallas to beat
01:26this team.
01:26That's what Dan Campbell told us
01:28adding we know it's not going to
01:29be easy making it harder.
01:31Those injuries at the tight end
01:33position and in particular in the
01:35defensive secondary.
01:36That's where the Lions are missing
01:38three of their starting safeties
01:41including Kirby Joseph and Brian
01:43Branch.
01:43They'll have to rely on the legion of
01:45home defensive unit so called by
01:47Kelvin Shepherd their defensive
01:49coordinator as Campbell told us we
01:51need those guys to step up in
01:53critical areas and we need to find
01:54an upward trajectory right now.
01:56Big challenge against Stafford and
01:58the boys guys.
01:59Yeah it certainly is and you see
02:00what's on the line for the Lions
02:02today.
02:02Look if they they control their
02:03destiny they went out there in the
02:05playoffs but you see what today
02:06does a win their probability of
02:08making it goes to 73 percent if
02:10they lose it drops all the way to
02:1240 so a big game for both certainly
02:14maybe bigger for Detroit Rams win
02:16they clinch a playoff spot and
02:18here we go from Inglewood.
02:20Lions will get it first and they
02:22will come all the way up to their
02:2435 yard line as the Rams deferred
02:26and so we get to see Jared Goff back
02:28in the place he started his career
02:30now actually been with the Lions for
02:33longer than he was with the Rams.
02:34Yeah just having in another elite
02:36season he's really kind of leading
02:38this balanced efficient explosive
02:39offense and they maintain their
02:41aggressiveness without really
02:43sacrificing protection of the football.
02:45So you saw stats right there.
02:47Jared just got great field vision
02:49processes information very quickly.
02:52He's always looking to get his team
02:54into the perfect play.
02:55They start by giving it to Jameer Gibbs
03:05off the left side looking for a
03:07little room and Gibbs who has been
03:09so darn explosive.
03:10Tell you what you know Dan Campbell
03:12took over calling plays five weeks
03:14ago from John Morton.
03:15He said he wanted to get more
03:16explosive and they've done that Tom
03:18and they're number one in point
03:19square and they've had number one in
03:21explosive play since Dan Campbell took
03:22over the play calling.
03:23Yeah and it's Jamison Williams has
03:25been the guy really that's lit up
03:26since Dan Campbell took over.
03:28He thought okay I gotta give this
03:30offense a little juice and Williams
03:33has come to life obviously the
03:34explosiveness of Jameer Gibbs in the
03:36backfield both those guys can go the
03:38distance on any play.
03:39So darn good and so reliable he's got
03:53a first down the most catches ever
03:55in the history of the NFL in the
03:57first five years that's on the Ross
03:58St. Brown going to get to Rams
04:00defense today that is almost quietly
04:03Tom then very very good their third
04:06in the NFL in the scoring defense.
04:07Yeah certainly I would consider them a
04:09bend but don't break defense they
04:11want to be aggressive they want to be
04:12physical and they want to eliminate
04:14explosive plays that's probably the
04:16best thing they do they play top down
04:18and their mantra is make them run
04:20another play.
04:22Bison run over here all kinds of times
04:24block as a man running free and it's
04:26complete down to the 30 goes Jamison
04:28Williams and a good start to this game
04:30for Detroit.
04:32Wow Bo's safety is playing very low
04:35he's got St. Brown on the post and it's
04:38an over route by Williams he's got both
04:40of them you don't think St. Brown was
04:42expecting that one Jamison Williams
04:44certainly was and this one route that
04:47he's so good at just these deep
04:49crosses with his speed in the
04:51secondary seems like there's always a
04:54place for golf to throw.
04:56Jumbo formation for the Lions they've
04:58done this a lot since the injury to Sam
05:00the quarter to try and compensate for
05:02that here's Biggs with his electric moves
05:04and speed look at this one still going
05:07down he flies first down and then some
05:09he's got almost 15 yards and now we'll
05:11see if it stands.
05:16He's happy with that run.
05:18He is fun man isn't he?
05:19It's so fun just it's so electric every
05:21time he touches it it's anything can
05:24happen and he just continues to come on
05:26as a young player 58 offense 10-yard
05:29penalty if you smile the foul replay
05:32first down well instead that beautiful
05:34looking run will come on back they get
05:36the all-pro Panay Sewell on the hole
05:38and they do a good job running to the
05:40right side of that line another's the
05:42hole they pull Cologne on the power
05:44play here's Sewell right tackle kind of
05:49coming downfield and right there he's
05:50got his arms around the defender and a
05:53little pancake on Cam Curl downfield
05:55looks like a tackle a tackle with the
05:58tackle yeah tackle tackle they caught it
06:00though and sort of move it on back
06:04gives the left side gets peed up pretty
06:11quickly that time as Byron run Byron
06:14Young the speedy linebacker was all over
06:16that play yeah a lot of pursuit from the
06:19back side they one thing that's going to
06:21be interesting for this defense this Chris
06:23Shula defense is how much they want to
06:26sit back in that shell coverage with
06:28two high safeties and allow this rent
06:31this Lions offense to run the ball it's
06:34going to take his shots because they
06:36definitely need help in the secondary
06:38with Williams and St. Brown it's going to
06:41be a little bit of a cat and mouse game
06:42all day today
06:45gobbled
06:52gobbled

06:56third and long coming on up
06:59definitely a little behind him and those
07:01are the ones that golf needs to hit to
07:03keep the offense on track you get a
07:05holding penalty on first down and then
07:07golf got plenty of time in the pocket
07:09he's got a good match-up on the
07:11defensive end and that's slight kind of
07:14missed throw behind them that's tough
07:16for those running backs with those big
07:17shoulder pads on when they're facing the
07:19sidelines to make those catches and got
07:21And Goff, one of the most accurate quarterbacks in the league, just missed that one.
07:25Third and 12.
07:32Fires over the middle.
07:33St. Brown has the catch, but he's short of a first down by four yards, down to 25.
07:38And we know the Lions are ultra-aggressive on fourth down, but they've been kind of ice cold in converting them.
07:44They're all for their last seven, and so because of that, they send out the field goal unit.
07:48Yeah, we asked Dan Campbell about that this week.
07:50Just about his fourth down approach, and he said, I'm not going to be discouraged.
07:53If I really believe we can get it from the matchup, we're saying I'm going to do it.
07:56But I don't mind this, putting points on the board, first drive of the game.
08:00You got a little momentum with some positive plays.
08:02Send Bates out there to try to put him up three-zip.
08:04This will be a 43-yard try for Jake Bates.
08:11And the kick is pulled left.
08:14No good.
08:15Oh, Bates normally pretty reliable, but this one certainly within his range, and he yanked it left, and a promising opening drive goes awry.
08:25Field goal no good.
08:27Rams take over.
08:28It's only the second miss from inside 50 from Jake Bates on the year, and the hold was fine from Jack Fox.
08:39He just yanked it left.
08:42A little bit of a golfer just tugging those things a little bit to the left, and Goff, a little bummed out by it.
08:47It's a decent momentum.
08:49Tough way to start.
08:50The Lions' views are so aggressive.
08:52They finally decide to kick a field goal, and they miss a guinea.
08:54So now the Rams will gladly take over, and they'll start it with the run game to Tyron Williams.
08:59It's a good start, and Matthew Stafford leading this Rams team.
09:02Oh, boy, has he been great.
09:03He's probably the MVP of the league right now.
09:05Unbelievable how he's playing.
09:07This is kind of the most diverse offense of his career, and he's been elite basically in every passing category.
09:12Going fast here.
09:13Started off.
09:14Floating one of the far sides, and there's Devontae Adams who breaks free, and a good pass and catch.
09:20Boy, what a wide receiver combo this is.
09:22Adams has 17.
09:23Yeah, it's called a bench route, running toward the bench, or a blaze out.
09:26You can see that little stick at the top of the route.
09:29Stafford knows it.
09:30One-on-one coverage with Robertson.
09:33What he's done all year, just drop those dimes to these two dynamic receivers, Adams, Puka.
09:39He's dealing to everybody.
09:40He really is.
09:41It's been great.
09:42This whole offense has been great.
09:43They're fourth in the league overall in scoring, but they've been number one since week seven.
09:47So there you go.
09:48That's on the left, Tyron Williams.
09:50And a good, strong run from him.
09:52And that's the thing.
09:52It's not just the wide receivers, Tom.
09:54They're basically splitting reps with Kyron Williams and Blake Corum now, and they're both.
09:58They've been terrific.
10:00And I think you see it right there.
10:01Just the efficiency of getting into the opponent's part of their defense without getting touched.
10:06This offense, whether it's Kyron Williams running the ball, whether it's Blake Corum, they have so much trust in this offensive line.
10:12They're leaning on bodies on the D-line.
10:14They're hitting it hard, and they're just so efficient.
10:16There is no stutter stepping with these backs.
10:19They hit these holes, and they hit them hard.
10:20Out of place there.
10:22Stafford looking deep.
10:24Far side.
10:25Adams goes up and gets it.
10:27Oh, Devontae Adams with the ups.
10:30And a nice grab.
10:34Similar concept.
10:36Another little post corner.
10:38Sticks the post move.
10:39Back to the corner.
10:40Read in coverage.
10:41And those are hard throws for the quarterback, because you don't quite know how he's going to come out of that route.
10:47That's why that ball's a little bit behind him.
10:50But because he's open by three yards, that gives you the margin there to come down with that catch.
11:04Went 47 yards on the opening drive after the field goal.
11:07And this is Williams just trying to look for a hole that never existed, because Aiden Hutchinson was there to close it down.
11:14This Lions defense has held it together.
11:16Tom Rinaldi told you about the big injuries.
11:18Their safeties, their secondary, is really banged up right now.
11:21And so that's going to be a key cog today.
11:22How do they slow down this Rams pass game?
11:24Yeah, it's a very aggressive unit, and they're kind of punishing.
11:26That's what Kelvin Shepard, their defensive coordinator, talks about.
11:30Very physical.
11:31They're average in most statistical categories.
11:34But how can you not be?
11:35They've got 12 guys on injury reserve.
11:37It's been a huge project, guys out there, all season long.
11:40They just don't have the continuity they want.
11:42Yeah, Brian Branch out for the season.
11:43Kirby Joseph, their all-car safety hasn't played in weeks.
11:46Intercepted.
11:47Oh, Aiden Hutchinson, a clear path.
11:51Can he win the race?
11:52Hutchinson inside the 20, and he's tackled there.
11:56What a play from Aiden Hutchinson.
12:00One of the few turnovers Stafford has all season.
12:19They're trying to throw to Parkinson on a tight end screen.
12:21But Hutch doesn't buy it.
12:24Makes the catch.
12:26Looking like a tight end himself.

12:31And Parkinson, with great hustle,
12:34to bring down Hutchinson in the open field and save a touchdown.

13:01Well, that's how they answer.

13:18Breaking out in front of Kobe Durant.
13:22Durant doesn't have much help to the inside.
13:24A lot of times those corners in that cover forward look
13:27will kind of play inside and leverage that post.
13:30But with that outside leverage,
13:32makes an easy read for Goff
13:34and an easy throw for an easy catch for St. Brown.

13:42Oh, boy, did this game change in a hurry.
13:44Rams are going right down the field.
13:46Aiden Hutchinson with an unbelievably smart and athletic play.

13:52And then Jared Goff said, yeah, I'll do the rest.
13:54And it's 7-0 Detroit.
13:55Here's Hutchinson running down the field.
14:02His legs are getting gas.
14:03He's looking right at Kyron Williams going,

14:07Who's on the other side?
14:09Oh, God.
14:10Here comes Parkinson.
14:10That's about as far as he's going to run.
14:14And, yeah, get the oxygen, young man.
14:16You deserve it.

14:18You've got to go right back out there and do it again.
14:20I should point out, Aiden Hutchinson is 6'7", 275, right?
14:24That's a big man running that fast.
14:25That was unbelievable.
14:27Here's Whittington on the return now to the Rams.

14:32Let's go back now to the actual touchdown
14:33right after that return to St. Brown.
14:35Yeah, and this all starts with this inside concept.
14:39It ends up being a little bit of an in-cut by Jamison Williams.
14:41It occupies the near safety.
14:44So once you take away that inside safety,
14:47St. Brown has that opportunity to run right by the corner.

14:52Goff sees it right away.
14:54Perfect cover four beater executed to perfection.
15:00I'll tell you, the Lions go down.
15:01They miss a gimme field goal.
15:03And the Rams are motoring right down the field.
15:04And that certainly changed the field.
15:06It is early going.
15:07Now it's Stafford.
15:08Back to throw.
15:09That's one rip into traffic.
15:10And Allen gets smoked there in coverage.
15:13It's Avante Maddox who's getting the start
15:15with multiple safety injuries.
15:17Kirby drove this spin out for a while.
15:18And Brian Branch hurt against Dallas.

15:20Maddox makes a good play.
15:22Yeah, it's actually a great throw by Stafford.
15:23It's such a tight window.

15:32Tough to come down with that catch.

15:34He filled in so nicely last week.
15:37So, I'm not surprised.
15:39He's been a really great player in the NFL.
15:40But to make that switch to safety
15:42and make it look relatively easy
15:44has been a big boost
15:44for this depleted Lions defense.
15:46He's always tough to bring down.
15:58He leans forward nearer first down.
15:59We'll see where they mark him.
16:01Well, Matthew Stafford,
16:02he has not thrown many picks at all on the year.
16:04Five total.
16:05And how about this?
16:06First interception at home
16:07since week 10 of 2024.
16:09He's been so good taking care of the ball.
16:11But a couple weeks ago
16:12in the loss to Carolina,
16:14he had a pick six.
16:15He had a red zone interception
16:16actually in the end zone.
16:17So, that one also in the red zone.
16:18Yeah, certainly the interceptions
16:20by quarterbacks,
16:21they happen, obviously,
16:23because you throw the ball a lot.
16:24You just don't want them on screen plays.
16:25It's like,
16:26those are the ones
16:26that's a one-man read.
16:28They end up covering it.
16:29You just got to throw it
16:29at the defensive lineman's beat.
16:31He tries to thread the needle
16:32and that's where the back plays happen.
16:34They gave it a kill on first down.

19:26these young players
19:27are going through.
19:27It's not the easiest thing.
19:28Now you see him

19:30in the slot.
19:30They asked him
19:31to do a lot of things
19:32and he's delivering.

19:42Stafford gets hit as he throws,

19:44and it's incomplete.
