Agatha Wong snares 6th Sea Games Gold

Filipina wushu artist Agatha Wong continued her reign at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games, ruling the women’s taijijian+taijiquan on Sunday, December 14 at the Ratthaprasasanabhakti Building for her sixth overall gold medal in the biennial competition.

Scoring 9.773 in taijiquan on Saturday, Wong displayed another exquisite performance to claim 9.783 points in taijijian Sunday for a total of 19.556 and her second straight title in the combined events.

Wong won her first four SEA Games golds with taijijian and taijiquan being separated events, having ruled taijiquan in 2017 and 2019, taijijian in 2019, and taijijian in 2021.

00:00Even at an early age, I didn't think I was meant for this future.
00:06I just really tried to do my best because, you know, it's not every day that you get an opportunity to represent your country.
00:14So now that I ended my year with, you know, a gold medal, I'm really happy.
00:19Does the feeling ever get gold? I mean, gold every SEA Games.
00:24Is it still new?
00:25I feel like every time I go to SEA Games, I feel like I'm gonna lose.
00:29I flew to Bangkok really scared, but I'm going home a champion.
00:33So, like, it's very emotional for me.
00:36Because every time I go to SEA Games, I feel like I'll lose.
00:40But I think your biggest enemy is yourself.
00:43Because you think that you cannot win, but then you do.
00:50So, I just trained really hard this year.
00:53I gave it my all. I had so much breakdowns, so much on my plate.
00:58So, I'm just really glad that I won't lose.
01:01As you mentioned na rin, kasi nakikita lang ng tao yung nandito, yung gold, yung victory na.
01:05But behind all of those, sobrang sakripisyo.
01:08How do you handle that?
01:10I think it's important din naman to talk to someone.
01:14And it's important na if you wanna cry, you just cry it out.
01:18For me, I've never really been someone who tried to hide my tears.
01:23If I wanted to try, I would do it.
01:26But, of course, in the comforts of my own home, I don't want my teenage to see I'm crying.
01:32Pag nahihihirapan ako, I try to take more time for myself.
01:36And then, when I'm tired, I try to tell myself na pagdating nung araw na magpokopi kulit ako,
01:43I'm sure na it's going to be worth it.
01:46So, yun.
01:47If you could sign me up, paano ko pinagdata ba yung med pool and yung pangiging athlete?
01:52I think I got lucky this year because nag-end yung med sem po December 5th.
01:58And then, I flew to Bangkok December 11th.
02:02So, I had like 6 days or more, gano'n.
02:04But, it was really hard.
02:06Nung week na mag-end yung semester po, I had finals.
02:10I had to keep taking exams and after that, taking training.
02:15And training was a duty.
02:17Example, a duty.
02:18But, yun.
02:19Parang yung tat na lang, it's a privilege to be tired in the pursuit of what you love.

02:27In the whole competition, ano yung parang pinaka nagiging challenge?
02:32Yung, pinaka nagiging challenge talaga is yung mental game.

02:37It's really easy to make a mistake.
02:38It's really easy to fall sa jumps mo.
02:40Kahit na mag-training ka ng maayos, mag-training ka everyday for a year.
02:44If your mentality isn't nice, mayhina ka talaga.
02:49You're going to fall.
02:51So, I think, anyway, I just let myself feel yung come back.
