00:00Because like I said, my job is to just drive that Nissan.
00:02That's what I do.
00:03And my job is to make Lug look good.
00:05And my job's to make Brandon look good.
00:06That's exactly right.
00:09Welcome to Sam's Garage, presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
00:30This week on Sam's Garage, the great race rolls through the Midwest, including hidden checkpoints, rookie nerves, and plenty of friendly trash talk.
00:56We'll meet the crews who wrench, navigate, and improvise their way across America.
01:03Then head to Southfield Classics, where EV hot riding gets high voltage and high tech.
01:12And later, Sam gets hands-on with Rogo Fastener's American-made gear.
01:16Because when your bolts don't back out, neither do you.
01:26We have 135-plus cars in the great race.
01:30Checkpoints along the way that they don't know in advance.
01:33And so the goal is you're going to stay on target.
01:35From start to finish, it's like family to me.
01:38Keeping it maintained, keeping it running hard.
01:40It's a complete family member.
01:42It's an experience.
01:43All the workers, all the towns that have been welcoming us.
01:46Winning an ace in the great race is just, it's one of the things that just lifts you up.
01:50Were we on time and everybody else was wrong?
01:52Were they on time and we were wrong?
01:54I guess we'll find out tonight.
01:56New drivers, old iron, and one goal.
01:59Don't get lost.
02:01From rookies earning their first ace to veterans keeping the wheels turning.
02:06It's all part of the great race chaos we love.
02:08So Sam Madavi, Sam's Garage TV show, came along on the great race last year, did a segment of the great race, videoed them doing the race, and kind of had that as like a 10-minute little segment of their show.
02:30Every show showed that they decided that it was so much fun or so much challenging that they wanted to come back and try it again.
02:37And that's what they're doing.
02:38They'll come by here in just a little bit.
02:40We'll shout them out when they get here, but they're doing a larger segment of the show this year featuring the race and showing what it takes to do the race before, during, and after.
02:50So you'll get a good video of what's happening inside that car between the drivers and navigators.
02:56Really cool things that they're doing, but that's what this is about is the Sam's Garage, the TV show, Sam Madavi.
03:04First time doing it, you're only a rookie for one time, your first year.
03:11We did go to the spring rally a couple months ago to kind of learn the process of putting it all together.
03:18We did good there.
03:19We were the rookie winners for the spring rally, and we also were the rookie winners yesterday for the trophy run.
03:26An ace is you get a score of a zero on one of the checkpoints.
03:31There's five or six hidden checkpoints a day, and if you do everything right, the race master knows at what time we're supposed to be at that checkpoint.
03:39And if you get there at second zero and you get a zero on that leg, they give you an ace.
03:45You get to put it on your car to tell everybody how good you did that day.
03:55It's everybody here has been really great.
03:57They're all trying to be helpful and really encouraging, which makes the experience even better.
04:04Hopefully, us being able to share our content as we go throughout the race will help encourage more people of different demographics, different ages,
04:12that they might be open to maybe coming to one of the stops to see the show or actually participating.
04:19Really, all the guys on the support group can pretty much do almost any job, either drive or navigate.
04:29Now, this being a first-year guy, he's not into navigation yet.
04:33We chose guys to be on the team who could really do multiple jobs.
04:36I'm a navigator, so I would love to do this.
04:44I won't ever, but this is right up my alley, so it sounds so fun.
04:52And he took his driver's test and had his first date in this car.
04:55That's more information than they want.
05:02We're the oldest car club in the Cedar Valley area in Waterloo.
05:07We were originally in 1955, and we're still in existence and still gaining members every once in a while.
05:18And the car club does different things throughout the whole city, goes to car shows, puts on demonstrations.
05:26We like to put on a car display, not so much a car show, but a display just so people can come in and see all the different cars.
05:36Sam's Garage is presented by NHOU.
05:46Brought to you by the following companies.
06:06Welcome back to Sam's Garage, presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
06:22New drivers, old cars, and more caffeine than since.
06:27From student-built power wagons to ace-chasing rookies, the great race proves classic cars and their crews still have plenty of miles left in the tank.
06:37You know, our corporate sponsor is Team Hagerty, but we also have Rogo that stepped up, so Rogo Fastener Company.
06:44Dan and his crew, the Rogo Fastener team, we've been having a great time.
06:48Dana loves getting all this swag.
06:50She's got, I got a pink hat.
06:51She's got a hoodie.
06:52She's like, she's been trying to wear the hoodie around, but it's a little hot for the hoodie.
06:56Yeah, a huge shout out to Rogo, a great sponsor for us this year.
07:06These two on the first day got an ace.
07:09Our first great race, so we're rookies, so that's a really big deal for us.
07:13Very big deal, especially when I missed a turn, but you didn't miss the one that was on the ace deal.
07:18Very good job.
07:19We did miss one turn, yes.
07:20We haven't gotten close to an ace, and I'm going to predict that we're not going to even get close to an ace this whole week, but we're going to have the most fun, right?
07:27Right.
07:28Oh, yeah.
07:29I'm a student at McPherson College for automotive restoration, so I go there to learn every single aspect of restoring classic cars and how to do it with the tools that existed in the 70s.
07:37That is so cool.
07:38This is sort of my whole world, old race cars, things breaking down, fixing them as it happens, so this is absolutely like heaven for me.
07:45And you said you're a vintage car mechanic when you're not doing the rally racing.
07:48Yes, I am.
07:49I work on vintage race cars, go with them to the racetrack, and when things break, I'm there to help out and get them back out on the track.
07:54And you found her at the Jessie Combs Foundation.
07:56Yes, we met through SEMA and the Jessie Combs Foundation.
07:58I was the Rising Star Awards recipient on the 23rd year.
08:03Yep.
08:04I said that's strange.
08:05That's very cool.
08:06But I met Joe last year through that, and Dana put us together, and we've been rocking and rolling ever since.
08:15Back in 2017, we said, okay, we're going to do this one time.
08:21I asked my buddy Brandon.
08:22I said, hey, you're a civil engineer.
08:24You know, do you think you could figure out how to do this whole great race thing?
08:27And he says, absolutely.
08:28So he got in there.
08:29We were going to do this one time together.
08:31And now, eight years later, it's been the longest one-time adventure I've ever done in my life.
08:35Rookie Division was awesome.
08:37We got the building blocks and the foundation of being able to actually do the rallying.
08:41We'd never done a time-speed and distance rally prior.
08:44And now, I think we're pretty much old experts, you know, as the moniker would say.
08:49We just really enjoy it.
08:50I think we had a lot more fun maybe in our rookie year when we were just kind of guessing on the seam of our pants.
08:56But now we're a lot more precise, and the scores are a lot more fun to look at when we get in each day.
09:02We're driving a 1953 Dodge Power Wagon.
09:12I'm the freshman motorsports instructor at Alfred State College.
09:17I have three of my freshman motorsports students with me,
09:20and then two automotive students who are going to be continuing their education after this.
09:25So I got a team of five students, and we're driving the 53 Dodge Power Wagon,
09:31and hopefully to the end in South Carolina.
09:34We're in the X-Cup category.
09:35It's for college and high school teams to get students involved with classic cars.
09:41You know, it gives them a chance to see a whole bunch of classic cars.
09:50Three aces, rookies.
09:52That's so impressive.
09:53You guys have been good to each other in the car?
09:55We had one little day yesterday.
09:56Yesterday was bad, and we looked at each other after we did it.
09:59We said, all right, no more of that, and it lasted about five seconds.
10:02Surprisingly, I thought it was going to happen the first day and the second day,
10:05and at the end of every day, we kind of leaned over and looked at each other
10:08and hugged and kissed before we ever ride.
10:10We just kind of breathe.
10:11When it's over, I don't have to tell you, you're done.
10:14Yeah, you just relax.
10:15I mean, you're mentally, you're physically.
10:16Yes, it's very enduring on the people as well as the car.
10:18It's like riding motorcycles.
10:19You get arm burned.
10:20I mean, it's crazy.
10:22You can't explain it.
10:23And what kind of results have you seen from the customers?
10:38Do you get any feedback from them?
10:40For us to sell, it's easy.
10:41More or less, we're just providing a service for the product.
10:44For you guys to have the reputation that you have and the backlog that you have,
10:46that means that you do everything correctly when it comes to the steps
10:49and the procedures of applying NHLU's products.
10:52Alexander, who has come all the way from Europe.
10:55I am a distributor.
10:57Distributor.
10:58Wow.
10:59For all Europe countries and have been working with NHLU for more than five years.
11:04So how many dealers do you actually have under you?
11:07At the moment, we have approximately more than ten dealers
11:11and we have partners, partner service.
11:14And like garages, they do additional service.
11:19Yep, regular maintenance and service.
11:20And then they add this service to their lineup.
11:22Always in the back of my mind, I always wanted to have my own business.
11:25At the end of the day, I don't like being helpless.
11:27So, you know, the more I can learn, the better.
11:29Cool.
11:30So do you guys plan on doing this for long term?
11:32We're the first ones in Canada and we're not going to be the last.
11:34Well, there you go, guys.
11:35Father and son team doing undercoating and restorations for people.
11:39You guys can get into it as well.
11:40This is a father and son team.
11:41They're not only going to help protect the investments of others,
11:44but they're going to make money while they're doing it.
11:46Welcome back to more Sam's Garage presented by NHLU.
11:50At Southfield Classics, the sparks are literal.
12:05Noah and Jesus show how modern modules, can bust brains, and old school craftsmanship come together to make electric builds run like classic hot rods, just quieter.
12:15This week at Southfield Classics, we're going to show you guys that putting a cab on a frame on one of these high voltage SC31Ts is no different than any other hot rod, right?
12:25Absolutely.
12:26It takes a little bit of time, a little bit of patience.
12:28You've got to maneuver it carefully, not to scratch the paint.
12:30Of course, the paint and the powder coat on it.
12:32So you've got to go kind of slow and easy.
12:34Take your time and get it on there, right?
12:36Yep.
12:37You've got four points on the frame that are actually welded, and those are the original body mounts that would be on the original frame.
12:43Correct.
12:44So we did our own designed rear body mount for the cab of these trucks that we've used that we've welded on to give it more of a rigid mount with a rubber gasket in between.
12:53The front is actually the stock style mount.
12:55Okay.
12:56So it actually sits on.
12:57There's no bushing in the middle that can deteriorate in the future.
12:59No, it's basically just squaring it up between those four points.
13:02There you go.
13:03That's pretty cool.
13:04So now that the cab is on the frame, Noen is going to go ahead and put four bolts in so nothing moves.
13:23And then him and Jesus are going to go ahead and put all the modules and the cam bus, the brains, the inverter, everything we need to make this thing run.
13:30So basically we need the base so we can start adding all the components to run the high voltage portion of it.
13:34They're going to go in there and add all the components to the back and then run all the wiring to get everything going on it.
13:39So what you guys are going to do basically we got all the modules here, the inverter, everything it takes to run the low and the high because the low is the can bus and the high does all the work.
13:50Noen and Jesus are going to go ahead and mock up their modules, make sure everything was exactly like it was before they did the paint job.
13:56Then if they're cool with it, next we're going to go ahead and put in the wiring.
13:59So what do we got going in first?
14:01So what we got going in first are the passenger side panel, driver side panel.
14:05And here it looks like you got can bus, low voltage stuff, is that correct?
14:09That is correct.
14:10So a lot of this is pretty much relays and fuses and everything in this.
14:15This is what they call the PDU, the power distribution unit.
14:18And this pretty much has a can system from which it talks to the ECU and the ECU tells it, obviously, you know, circulate voltage in between, read signals and all that other stuff.
14:27That actually is what sends electrical current to all these little tiny ones to actually wake up, right, to get the system running.
14:33And then we obviously have the little fuse links and then we have the main relay that actually switches on some of this power when you turn on the key.
14:40And these relays are not automotive relays or are they mixed between automotive and household relays?
14:45I mean, they're a new style automotive relay.
14:49They're small, micro-sized.
14:50Wow.
14:51Yeah.
14:52These are 12-volt relays?
14:53Yes, they are.
14:54Usually a 5-volt relay was small like that.
14:56Right, right, right.
14:57So these ones here are a little more compact and newer type style design, you know, that people use on some of their stuff now.
15:03And so we're able to adapt it to what they're using on this system here.
15:06It's incredible that the same current can go through something this small that used to go through something that big.
15:11Correct.
15:12So obviously like we were discussing before about technology getting smaller.
15:16It's amazing how they could just keep advancing themselves, you know?
15:18Correct.
15:19Correct.
15:20They're just reinventing the wheel and making it smaller and smaller each time they're doing it.
15:25So after we get done mounting all our components where they sit, you know, our wire harness lays in there and we get everything pretty much running in the route that it needs to go clean.
15:34It's pretty straightforward from there.
15:38All right, Jesus and Noen got all the modules in. Looks pretty good in there.
15:41Yeah, it's looking great. Looks more like a circuit board now.
15:43Absolutely does. The business end.
15:45Yep.
15:46So what's next?
15:47So next up is going to be installing the wiring harness, getting everything laid out into the cab and start running all the wires to the rest of the components.
15:54And that's going to be next week.
16:01Sam's Garage is presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
16:06Is brought to you by the following companies.
16:08Welcome back to Sam's Garage presented by NHLU.
16:36Sam unboxes Rogos Precision Hardware lineup.
16:52Host clamps that don't quit.
16:54Copper anti-seize that doesn't stain your phone.
16:57And a mug that proves you've officially got your nuts.
17:00So Julie and I met Dan and his wife at the 2024 Great Race.
17:05They were not only contestants, but they brought their awesome station wagon filled with everything they carry at Rogo Fastener to be as a support vehicle for the other 130 people that were there, right?
17:14Yeah.
17:15So we hooked up with him and his son Joe at Irmo, South Carolina.
17:18And I was going through Joe's van.
17:20I saw this setup.
17:21I'm like, you know what?
17:22I'm going to sneak out the back door with one of these.
17:23And here we are.
17:24So sorry, Dan.
17:25So what we got here is organization, really.
17:27We got the best fasteners made right here in the USA for over 30 years family owned, right?
17:31And that's a big difference because family owned means that they care.
17:34They care in the packaging.
17:35They care in the delivery.
17:36And they mostly care in the customer service.
17:38But the biggest thing, honestly, when I'm ordering something and it comes to me, it really depends on how it's boxed up.
17:43Oh, my gosh.
17:44Yeah.
17:45So I had the joy of unboxing the whole palette.
17:48And I mean, literally from the outside of the palette, the way everything is done, it's so nice and organized, professionally packaged.
17:58Everything was really well protected and separate boxes.
18:02And then you look at everything and the way it all came, it's so organized.
18:06But the quality is where it really matters.
18:08For instance, these hose clamps, I can't tell you what a bear it's been having hose clamps today just fail on me.
18:14Rogo Fastener does it different.
18:16They're old school.
18:17They're high quality stainless steel, American made.
18:19And they're not going to fail on you.
18:20Yeah, but on top of that, when it's made in America, you're employing Americans.
18:24And that's just great for the economy and whole.
18:26We got abrasives here all the way from coarse to fine along with sanding discs in a gravity fed compartment that'll hang on the wall, making it very easy for you to keep everything organized in one spot and to easily be able to reorder and refill the cabinet.
18:40Zip ties.
18:41You're always asking me where the zip ties are.
18:43Well, sometimes I don't even know what drawer I put them in.
18:45But zip ties we use in volume.
18:47What we got here is anti-seize, okay?
18:49But it's not the regular gray anti-seize that you wear home and your wife gets upset at you.
18:53This stuff is copper and very thick.
18:55I've already opened this thing two or three times.
18:57And you didn't get any on your clothes.
18:58I didn't get any anywhere.
18:59And you've got the cabinets themselves.
19:01Now in the cabinets, we've got an aerosol cabinet right here.
19:04And in this aerosol cabinet, we have, it comes out, there is four rows deep and there is room for others, whatever aerosol cans that you may see in their catalog.
19:13And their catalog is filled with everything you may need.
19:15Not only that, we got here at the bottom, we got four drawers up top, four drawers at the bottom.
19:20I happen to have the plastic fasteners.
19:22These are the fasteners that we've been using the last 15 years, fastening the under shields and anything plastic on a vehicle.
19:27We've got two drawers of that.
19:29We've got regular screws, chrome, tapered, all sorts of assortment screws that you would normally find in dashboard settings.
19:37And the cool thing about this cabinet is you can very easily close this up, just like this.
19:42Take it out of the drawer, go to your workstation, and do what you need to do.
19:46So save yourself the time and money and the customer by going to ROGO, getting yourself an assortment, and just using what you need.
19:52And then you'll notice, I think there was still one in there.
19:55But each drawer is, you know, is certified, packed, inspected, you know, by an employee at ROGO.
20:01And they always have specials.
20:03They've got a very nice cup here.
20:04They've got specials online.
20:05If right now, if you buy six, eight, and ten millimeter nuts, three packages, you get a free cup.
20:10And that's why right here it says, I got my nuts mugged at rogofaster.com.
20:15That's a special going on right now.
20:17Don't forget to constantly go to their website when you're ordering and always look at their specials.
20:21Absolutely.
20:22Yeah, I think what's key about ROGO is it's high quality and it's organized.
20:26And for people like you, that's exactly what you need to keep you going on the job, right?
20:30Absolutely right.
20:31And stay tuned, guys, because together Dan and I are going to be working on his father's Suburban.
20:35We're going to be doing a lot of stuff together in 26.
20:37And we're going to be showcasing this stuff at SEMA in 2027.
20:48From rookie racers to high voltage builds and shop grade fasteners, this week proved one thing.
20:55Whether it's torque, tech, or thread pitch, the details make the drive.
21:01Catch us next time on Sam's Garage, where every project comes with stories and sarcasm under the hood.
21:07Hear our history, where our ads are now in a way possible suggested for all the reasons
21:20what are we gonna do today?
21:24Today, I started to take a look at the こens.
