00:00G'day, I'm Adam Hills, welcome to Specs and Specs, the music we show
00:29that's got talking heads, stiff little fingers, 9-inch nails and a wet leg. Joining me as
00:34always are our two team captains, she's H-O-T-T-O-G-O and he's B-A-N-A-N-A-S, it's Miff
00:40Walhurst and Alan Rowe. Miff's first guest tonight is an Australian Idol winner from
00:45Mappoon, a town in Queensland with a population of around 400. This means Mappoon's biggest
00:50industries per capita are now crabbing and winning Australian Idol. Please welcome Royston
00:54Noel. Miff's second guest is a UK comedian who also hosts The Great British Sewing Bee.
01:03No matter what she does, she'll have you in stitches with all her material. Please welcome
01:06Sarah Pascoe. Alan's first guest tonight is an actor and singer who played Glinda in Wicked
01:13and Princess Fiona in Shrek the Musical. If her co-star isn't green and misunderstood,
01:18he's not interested, please welcome Lucy Jurak. Alan's final guest is a comedian whose pre-gig
01:26ritual is listening to aggressive metal music and telling himself nothing matters. We can
01:32only apologise to Lucy for putting them in the same dressing room. Please welcome Greg Larson.
01:37I've got to say, you two next to each other are such an unlikely musical pairing. Like
01:45your musical career highlights are so different. Like, Lucy, performing for Celine Dion.
01:51Oh, the best. And she was so nice. She was like so sort of like unbelievably nice. You sort
01:57of wanted to cry. It was beautiful. Whereas Greg, one of your musical highlights was watching
02:02the German metal band Rammstein. Yeah, Big Day Out. Yeah. Yeah. That was also very emotional
02:08because there was a bit where a guy spewed on me. It did. Like, he spewed on me heaps
02:14and it was because it was in the mosh pit and then the lead singer of Rammstein has this
02:18song where he gets like a big fake dildo and it's fake. The keyboard player comes out and
02:26he starts, it's pretend piss and it's like water and he just sprays the keyboard player and
02:30then he sprays the audience. Yeah. Long story short, wash the spew off.
02:34Now, it is 20 years since Fix and Specs started and we are celebrating that by asking some of the
02:41country's best performers to close the show for us. Tonight, it's the star of the Australian
02:46production of Tina Turner the musical, Roova. And Roova, the song you're going to do tonight,
02:54now it's not Australian but it's a song that Australia has made their own. Yeah. We're going to do
02:58the nut bush, very iconic but we don't do the nut bush in Tina World on stage in the Tina show,
03:04that's an Australian thing. Is it weird for the audience because the audience must be watching
03:07going why aren't you doing it? Yeah, they're itching to get up and sometimes they do just get up and
03:11do the nut bush in the front row, so. Really? Yeah. Sarah, are you aware of this kind of phenomenon?
03:16I don't know what you're talking about. Okay, so we've invented our own dance to nut bush city limits.
03:23This is so Australian. It was a department of education thing in the in the 70s to teach
03:29kids to dance at school. Oh my god. And they chose the nut bush. Yeah, private dancer didn't feel right.
03:36All right, Roova, we'll see you at the end of the show. Can't wait. Right now though,
03:39let's get into round one. All right, our first game tonight is called Know Your Product. Miff and Alan
03:47are going to pick a topic, everybody will be quizzed on that topic. Your choices tonight are Modern Movie
03:52Musicals, Big Beautiful Ballads, Perfect Pop Partnerships and Wet Wet Wet. Alan, you can pick first.
04:00Modern Movie Musicals, please. Absolutely. Miff? I love the Big Beautiful Ballad and I suspect my
04:05team does too, so that's ours. All right, we'll start with Modern Movie Musicals. Everyone on
04:10your buzzers, let's play Spicks and Specs. For one point, which actress told Steven Spielberg she'd
04:15play Maria in his West Side Story, but first she wanted to play Fiona in her high school production
04:20of Shrek the Musical? It was Rachel Zegler. Oh, it was Rachel Zegler. For two points,
04:28here's a photo of the director and cast of the Australian musical film The Sapphires,
04:32name the two concealed actors. Yes. Okay, Miranda Tapsall. Yes, Miranda Tapsall.
04:37Jess. No, Jessica Malboy. Jessica Malboy, two points. Yes.
04:43Final question, three points, name three of Meryl Streep's musical film credits.
04:48The Witch in Into the Woods. Yes, that's one of them. Donna in Mamma Mia. Yes.
04:54I mean, Devil Reyes Prada should be a musical. Yeah. Oh, that'd be fun. The second Mamma Mia.
04:59Yes, that's the other one. And not many people know Meryl Streep actually trained as an opera
05:05singer when she was a teenager and she will often find a way to work a song into one of
05:10her movies. Thankfully, they cut out the musical numbers from Sophie's Choice.
05:14I was going to make that joke and then I thought, nah.
05:21Now, Royce, we showed the Sapphires before and I know you're a massive fan of Jess Malboy.
05:25Well, really, because I was so isolated, come from a small indigenous community,
05:30I remember watching Jessica Malboy and just being like, wow, she's amazing. And it's just awesome to
05:36see like, you know, representation and, you know, um, just to let you know that like,
05:41if she can do it, I can do it as well. You know, I love her. She's a queen.
05:46All right, let's move on to big, beautiful ballads. Your first question for one point.
05:50Which Adele ballad starts, There Ain't No Gold In This River
05:54That I've Been Washing My Hands In Forever? Yes.
05:56Go Easy On Me Babe. Is that the one?
05:59Easy On Me is the name of the song I was looking for. Yes, correct.
06:01Thank you. For two points, name the band and the song that won the Oscar for best original song
06:06for the 1986 film Top Gun. Myth. Take my breath away. Yes. And the band?
06:14Um, give me a minute. Come on, Myth, you can do it. I can, but it's like, how long have we got?
06:21We've just guessed bands and you tell us when it's wrong. It's like, like, the Eagles?
06:23She had a... No, no, no. Rolling Stones. No, it was a lady singer, a lady singer at the front.
06:29And it had blonde hair and... Is it NSYNC?
06:34Berlin was who I was looking for. Oh, my God. What happened to them?
06:38Uh, well, funnily enough, Berlin singer Terry Nunn came under fire in 2020
06:42for performing at Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago at a party that defied COVID restrictions.
06:47To make matters worse, she sang Take My Breath Away.
06:52Vanilla Ice was also at that party. To make matters worse for him, he sang...
06:55All right, next question.
06:59What I'd like to... Very good.
07:02Three points. Match the artist to the ballad that was originally intended for them.
07:08So the artists are Celine Dion, Gloria Estefan and Meatloaf.
07:12Mm-hmm.
07:13The songs are Total Eclipse of the Heart, Hero and I Don't Want to Miss a Beat.
07:20Yes.
07:21OK, so I think Total Eclipse of the Heart is Meatloaf.
07:24Uh-huh.
07:25Don't Want to Miss a Thing, that's the Armageddon Aerosmith song.
07:27That's who actually sung it. Yep.
07:29Hero, I'm pretty sure, is Gloria Estefan.
07:31Yeah, and Don't Want to Miss a Thing does sound like a Celine song.
07:34I would love to hear Celine Dion sing that song.
07:36Three points out of three, correct.
07:37Aww.
07:40Yeah, right?
07:41Yeah, right.
07:42And while we're talking ballads, like this is your stock in trade.
07:45Belting out ballads, like Wicked, for instance.
07:48Yes.
07:50Night after night, doing a show, there've got to be moments where something goes wrong
07:52and you still have to hold it together during a big ballad.
07:54Yes, I mean, true.
07:56I mean, I mean, people die occasionally in the audience.
08:01But anyway, don't worry about that.
08:03Well, that's awkward if you're singing, I don't want to miss a thing.
08:06I mean, it's often if you're like in a, um, you know,
08:08it's people who are of a certain age in a matinee and they're all warm and cosy.
08:12I mean, I'd kind of love to die like that, but...
08:14But do you think at the funeral they say, like,
08:19oh, he died doing what he loved, watching Wicked?
08:22Yeah.
08:22How many times have you been in a show where someone has died?
08:27Look, and I don't want to...
08:28For anyone who has had a family member who's died in the audience,
08:30I don't want to make light of it, cos I realise that that's...
08:32But people are probably at home next to elderly family members thinking, hang on.
08:36Yeah.
08:38My sister was once in the audience of South Pacific
08:40and two separate people died.
08:42That matinee.
08:44Anyway, I feel like we were going into a dark place.
08:45You brought this up, Lucy.
08:47I was worried I was going to say something real messed up on...
08:52Surprise! It was me.
08:53Uh, alright, at the end of that round,
08:55the scores are Miff, Royce and Sarah on four points,
08:57Alan, Lucy, Greg, six points.
09:03Alright, the next round is one out of three ain't bad.
09:05Each team will be given an obscure fact with three possible endings.
09:09You have to tell me which ending is the real one.
09:12Miff, Royce and Sarah, you start first.
09:14In an interview, Rose A, from the K-pop band Blackpink,
09:18revealed her post-music dream career is...
09:21A, own a coriander farm featuring a coriander-inspired menu.
09:25B, establish a drinkable alcoholic liquid soap line.
09:29C, create a retirement home for Jack Russell Terriers
09:32and treat them like humans.
09:33One of those, remarkably, is correct.
09:38Well, look, if she was me, it would be C.
09:42Yeah, straight away, the one I've grown to, I've got a Jack Russell dog.
09:46And when I was pregnant, I was worried that if my child came out looking
09:49not like a Jack Russell, I wouldn't be able to love him properly.
09:53I think Miff and I are going to do this anyway, actually.
09:58I'm quite fond of B. I like the idea of a drinkable alcoholic liquid soap.
10:02It's kind of like the iPhone, but not technology.
10:06More like...
10:07You can have those two things so nicely separately.
10:10I do have to say as well, like, every liquid soap is drinkable unless you're a cow.
10:16We have to sort of look into her eyes and think, what does she want?
10:22We have to sort of take on the character of Rosé.
10:24I mean, I don't know much about Rosé and Blackpink.
10:26Are you a Blackpink fan?
10:27Um, yeah, I know she was born in New Zealand and then she grew up here in Australia.
10:33Yes, which makes the name Rosé sound slightly less exotic.
10:38Like a K-pop star named Rosé, you're like, oh, I wonder how she got that.
10:41Yeah.
10:41But an Australian called Rosé, you're like, oh, you're just named after what your
10:44auntie drinks on Christmas Day.
10:45It makes me think she's not posh, so let's get rid of coriander.
10:48OK.
10:49I think that's going to be the best.
10:51Get rid of it.
10:51Now I'm thinking...
10:53Look, I want it to be the Jack Russell.
10:54We want seed to be true, so shall we go for the life we want?
10:57I hope it's right.
10:58I love it.
10:59OK, the correct answer is...
11:01Blackpink's Rosé revealed her post-music career dream is to own a coriander farm featuring
11:07a coriander-expired menu.
11:08What?
11:09Well, look, I'm sorry, it's a bad dream.
11:12It's a horrible dream.
11:14All right, Al and Lucy Gregg, your fact.
11:16The BG's 1970 album, Cucumber Castle, contained songs that A, were from a TV movie in which
11:22Barry and Maurice played warring royals named The King of Cucumber and The King of Jelly.
11:28B, all contained vitriolic references to Robin, who had just left the band.
11:33C, all started with the word cucumber, with such songs as Cucumber Groove, Cucumber In My Pocket
11:39and Cucumber Rumba.
11:40OK, I will bet money that it's not A, because if it were A, there is no way that in my teenage
11:48years I wouldn't have smoked bongs and watched that.
11:50A hundred times.
11:51That is a valid argument.
11:54Well, I just don't know that the BG's were vitriolic, that's the only thing.
11:59They were like such nice guys, weren't they?
12:01I know so little about the B, I don't know when Robin left the group, if he had left the group,
12:04I don't know if that's true or not.
12:06I mean, I think that's when he joined up with Batman.
12:08Yeah.
12:10But this is a family situation, so even people who appear to be, you know, great guys,
12:17when it's about family, they can just turn.
12:19Yeah.
12:20Yeah, right.
12:21And so B and C could be true, because it could be songs like Cucumber Groove,
12:25but with bad intentions.
12:26What, and, yes, what, and like, Cucumber in my pocket.
12:31I don't want to put you on the spot, but what is the bad intention that you might see in Cucumber Groove?
12:38It was more than I was thinking if it was family, it would be like an underhanded,
12:41like, you wouldn't say it outright, but you'd just say it slyly.
12:45Yeah.
12:45I feel like it could have been like a cucumber in the pants situation,
12:49because if you're in a band in the 70s, you're putting a cucumber down your pants,
12:52so it looks like you've got a big hog.
12:53And they were making fun of him, because they'd be like,
12:57he's just got a cucumber down there, his hog's actually tiny.
13:00And, like, so they were making fun of him with cucumber references.
13:05You know what I mean?
13:06I feel like this makes sense in my mind.
13:07I feel like we're not getting towards an answer.
13:08I feel like we're not getting towards an answer.
13:10Um, so.
13:11What was the actual question, just quickly?
13:13They released an album called Cucumber Castle in 1917,
13:20and did they release it because all the songs were...
13:25Oh, definitely C.
13:26Yep.
13:27Definitely C?
13:28Yes.
13:29C.
13:29C.
13:31Okay, the correct answer is the BG's 1970 album, Cucumber Castle,
13:36contained songs that were A, from a TV movie in which Barry and Maurice
13:41played warring royals named King of Cucumber and King of Jelly.
13:45Well, I know what I'm doing this weekend.
13:52And, honestly, we had a look at the movie to see if there was a funny moment
13:56that we could show you, and there wasn't one.
14:00It's so bad one of our researchers filed a work cover claim.
14:05I mean, that was...
14:06You're right, mad stuff like that happened in the 70s.
14:09Which brings me on to your parents' meeting.
14:12I know this is a link.
14:13Yes, okay.
14:14But your parents met in the 70s.
14:15Oh, yes, yes.
14:16In quite an unusual way.
14:17Yes, it is an unusual origin story, but of course,
14:20me, my sisters thought this is how all parents met.
14:23My dad was in a pop band, very briefly,
14:25and my mum, when she was 14, started running away from home
14:30to go and see him, and she used to sit outside his house
14:34with lots of other girls, and because she's tenacious,
14:37she waited until my dad left the band and then sort of outweighed
14:41all of the other girls, and so she was the only one on his doorstep,
14:45and he agreed to go on a date with her,
14:47and then very shortly afterwards they fell pregnant with me.
14:49Please use protection.
14:51And, yeah, that's how they met.
14:54And so the band was called Flintlock?
14:56Flintlock was their name, yeah.
14:58And they appeared on shows like Top of the Pops and the like?
15:00Yeah, my mum said when she first saw him on TV,
15:02she just felt this absolute, like, surety that she was going
15:06to have children with him.
15:07Wow.
15:08I know.
15:08I felt that about many pop stars, never happened to me.
15:12When me and my sister were 14, Robbie Williams left Take That,
15:15and that was our favourite band, so we ran away from home
15:18to go and meet him, because he was filming The Big Breakfast,
15:21because we thought this was how you would snared a husband.
15:24Wow, after that round, Miff Royston and Sarah are on four points.
15:29Alan, Lucy, Greg, six points.
15:35All right, the next game tonight is called Give Me Some Kind of Sign.
15:38It's a new one.
15:39I'm going to give our teams a symbol or a punctuation mark.
15:42You have to name a band or artist that has that symbol in their name.
15:47So, the first symbol is a dollar sign.
15:50Miff, your team gets to go first.
15:53Name one band or artist with a dollar sign in their name.
15:57Kesha?
15:57Kesha.
15:59Yes, Kesha is there.
16:01This side.
16:02A$AP Rocky.
16:03Down.
16:03A$AP Rocky is there.
16:06Back to Miff's team.
16:06A$AP Ferg.
16:07A$AP Ferg, now just Ferg, is there, correct?
16:12Big Dollar Money Boy.
16:17Big Money Dollar Boy, not a band.
16:19Not a band.
16:21Yeah, I thought I'd check.
16:22Miff team, you win that one.
16:23Yes.
16:25Alan's team, you get to go first this time.
16:28Your symbol is a full stop.
16:30Name a band or an artist with a full stop in it.
16:31R.E.M.
16:32Correct.
16:33Miff's team.
16:34N.W.A.
16:35N.W.A, yes.
16:36Alan.
16:37Mick G.
16:39M.K.G.E.
16:41M.K.G.E.
16:41M.K.G.E.
16:42A.G.E.
16:42Yes.
16:43Miff.
16:44N.E.R.D.
16:45Yes.
16:46N.E.R.D.
16:47Alan.
16:48P.O.D.
16:49Correct.
16:50Miff.
16:51Ms. Lauren Hill.
16:52Ms. Lauren Hill.
16:53Yes.
16:54Alan.
16:54N.W.A, yes.
16:55N.W.A, yes.
16:56I knew that was my word.
16:57Well, I did.
16:58Good.
16:59Um.
17:00Full stop.
17:01Full stop.
17:02Money boy.
17:03Al.
17:04I can't.
17:05I can't.
17:06I can't.
17:07Time's up. That goes to Miff's side.
17:11Alright, Miss Team, your symbol is exclamation mark.
17:16Oh!
17:17One.
17:18Yes, Wham is one.
17:22The Go Team?
17:23Yes, Miff.
17:25Panic at the Disco.
17:27Yes, yes, Panic at the Disco.
17:28Is Rats, Rats, Rats one? Have I made that up?
17:32I feel like this is not a big Money Boy one.
17:35I've heard of a band called Rats, Rats, Rats.
17:38Commit to it and go.
17:39Go on, you've got this.
17:41Rats, Rats, Rats?
17:42Oh, yes, you get it for Rats, Rats, Rats.
17:43Yes, are you? I'm not an idiot.
17:46Okay, Miss Team, can you come up with one?
17:48I'm out, I can't think of anything.
17:50Maybe we pretend someone put one in, like Radiohead.
17:52Yes, make it exciting.
17:56Less depressing, Radiohead have added one.
18:00No, Radiohead don't have one.
18:03Alan Team get the point.
18:05All right, at the end of that round,
18:08the scores are Miff, Royston and Sarah are on six points.
18:13Alan, Lucy and Greg also six points.
18:21One member of each team will be singing well-known songs
18:23using the words of an unrelated piece of text.
18:25Your teammates have to identify the songs.
18:27Royston, you'll be singing for Miff and Sarah.
18:30You'll be getting your lyrics from
18:31Field and Stream's The Total Fly Fishing Manual.
18:34By Joe Echemele.
18:37Let's do this.
18:38Royston Noel, everyone.
18:42All right.
18:42First fish I ever caught on a rod with a bluegill.
18:48When I was 10 years old, I had no idea.
18:53I was instantly in love with flying fishing
18:58and well-presented fly with a hook of fish.
19:03I believe flying fishing makes you think
19:08from where you stand to how you're flying hands.
19:13It's blinding lights.
19:20It's blinding lights by the weekend, correct.
19:22That was so bright.
19:23That was beautiful.
19:26Song two, please.
19:27All right.
19:28Here we go.
19:28Even the most complex flying fishing reels
19:33are simply the average reel.
19:37Yeah.
19:39But still it behooves you to understand
19:43and utilize this vital gear.
19:49Make no sudden moves
19:54when you've got a big trout on the line.
20:00Don't make abrupt movements.
20:05Quick moves lost fish most of the time.
20:09Sorry.
20:09That's Sam Smith.
20:15I know I'm not the only one.
20:17Yes.
20:18Sam Smith, not the only one.
20:19That was actually my audition song for Idol.
20:22Yes.
20:22I was it.
20:23She totally released a fly fishing album.
20:27Final song, please.
20:28This is so random.
20:29I love it.
20:32The meat whistle
20:33and gully ultra crawl
20:37are similar to skirted jigs
20:39but with the difference
20:41there's more wiggle, ayy
20:44thanks to flexible furs
20:46and feathers
20:47are comparatively
20:49little weight.
20:51Also plastic jerk baits
20:55used to be
20:57conventional anglers
21:00you will have awesome strikes
21:03you might land the fish
21:07too
21:08higher love
21:13It's higher love
21:14by Steve Wynwood
21:15or Whitney Houston
21:16three out of three
