00:00Yo! This is Morris Blackman, and this is my main man, Michael Jordan, and this is a pair of titans, Ed Jordan, from Nike. This is something you can buy.
00:14Spike and Mike was like from another planet.
00:16I'd buy a 360 slam dunk. This is something you cannot do.
00:20Spike and Mike blew my mind when it came on TV and seemed to reinvent what advertising could be.
00:25I remember watching an NBA game and seeing it come on for the first time on traditional linear television and feeling like the world shifted a bit.
00:36That's a campaign that Jim Rizwold and Bill Davenport went out and saw a Spike Lee movie called She's Gotta Have It,
00:42and were just so captivated by that movie and Spike's performance and character of Morris Blackman
00:48that Jim had the idea of, well, maybe Morris Blackman could become Michael Jordan's greatest champion.
00:55That marketing component really felt like art and cool and modern in a way that advertising-wise not at that point.
01:04Do you know how I get up from my game? Do you know? Do you know? Do you know? That's right. Ed Jordan, Ed Jordan, Ed Jordan.
01:11I was always kind of fascinated with advertising. Never really considered it as a job or as a career until I got to college.
01:19I knew about Wieden & Kennedy, but it was like a dream job.
01:23Wieden & Kennedy has been the agency for Nike since about 84, 85, maybe even earlier, founded by Dan Wieden & David Kennedy.
01:34I distinctly remember going out to Nike for my first meeting to present something, and I was completely freaked out,
01:39and I couldn't believe it, and I was having an out-of-body experience.
01:44At the time, I was working on a football campaign with Dennis Hopper as this crazy ex-NFL ref.
01:50When I was a boy, I dreamed of playing football!
02:09But I was allergic to milk and the soybean juice substitute to my mother.
02:13You know, I didn't sit in the room and thought kids would connect with Dennis Hopper.
02:16I sat in the room and said, I would like that.
02:19I love football!
02:21Football!
02:22I was so fortunate to be at Wieden & Kennedy, to be working alongside people that I had read their names in the award show books
02:29and, you know, legendary Nike campaigns.
02:31I am not a role model.
02:33And it was kind of, at that time, kind of a small group.
02:35I'm not paid to be a role model.
02:37We were all sort of operating out of, how do we make Nike basketball the coolest brand?
02:43We're reminded of Barkley on that set off-camera.
02:49And we're reminded of what it was like to hang out with him in his trailer.
02:53And we're reminded of how he just kept the conversation flowing.
02:57And as a basketball fan, you're like sitting there listening to him, have private conversations
03:02and hilarious conversations with other basketball players.
03:06So we tried to think of a context in which these conversations could happen and we could watch them.
03:11And that's when we came up with Nike Barbershop.
03:14Yeah, didn't you see Chris duck on Charles Barkley?
03:18Nah, he didn't see that.
03:19He went something like this.
03:20Look, put the cape on, though, because I was like Superman.
03:22Oh, yeah, you were.
03:23Let me just put that on.
03:24Let me just put that on.
03:25Let me just put that on.
03:26Let me see.
03:27Catch it like this, around the back.
03:30Let me see.
03:31So he's Barkley trying to block it.
03:33Wait, he's too high.
03:34He's too high.
03:35And then what did Barkley say?
03:37He said, I don't believe in role models, but you mine.
03:40Let me see.
03:42We had, like, Webber, Sprewell, Tim Hardaway, Rodman, all the current Nike guys just hanging
03:50out talking.
03:51They don't put my name on this shit, man.
03:53They got Michael Jordan, but he won't put Dennis Rodman on it, see?
03:56It gleaned so many good conversations and spots that had this kind of cinema verite,
04:02fly on the wall kind of thing.
04:04The money don't mean anything to me.
04:05You know, I can go out there and play for free.
04:07The thing is, you get them two rings.
04:09That's what it means.
04:10That's what it means.
04:11That's what it means.
04:12If you had them two rings, it'd be a ring.
04:13Well, they can't do nothing to them now.
04:14Right, right, right.
04:15Boy, he had them rings.
04:16He was like...
04:17No, those rings don't mean anything, really.
04:18No, those rings don't mean nothing.
04:19No, they're just party history.
04:20Can I have one?
04:21Growing up in North Carolina, one of the posters I had on my wall was the Iceman, George
04:33Girvin.
04:34And, man, the most popular commercial of all of them was George Girvin's One Thing I Could
04:39Do Is Finger Roll.
04:41George, tell us about that finger roll from the fruit.
04:44Oh, man.
04:45That was my patent.
04:46That was my patent to shot.
04:47One thing I could do was finger roll.
04:51Everything you do at an agency, and for a client like Nike, gives you a little more voice
04:56in the room for your next thing.
04:59I had people sort of feeling like, well, I wonder what Stacy's going to come up with.
05:04I wanted to make marionettes of all the basketball players and do these kind of lifestyle commercials
05:09with puppets.
05:10Nike thought, well, this could be cool, but it could also be really weird.
05:13Stacy, why don't you go shoot a test?
05:16We had shot one test, Jordan and Penny Hardaway, playing one-on-one on a street court.
05:23And we did it with marionettes, so we made a little miniature court.
05:28That campaign is met with crickets.
05:30They hated it.
05:31And it's one of the forgotten, weird commercials.
05:34It never aired.
05:35The Jordan puppet, you know, he's a hard guy to capture.
05:38I don't think his puppet really ever captured how cool, you know, Michael Jordan is.
05:43But Penny's puppet was really cool.
05:45Oh, wait, I have to welcome you guys a little bit difficult today.
05:53And Jeff is on the planet.
05:54It if you are.
05:55And to
06:03you check it out.
06:04It's not only that one place.
06:06Okay, we layer with your mind.
06:07It's really cool.
06:09Good.
06:11Looking at Equatching the World
06:12in equipped pair.
06:13And at the Rainbow pit,
06:14How do I try to pick up his game very quiet and the series against the Celtics
06:26Michael first came back you know we beat them in the playoffs anytime you beat the team that
06:37was the dynasty we could talk about everything we want to talk about but they were still the Bulls
06:41that series definitely defined me in my career to push me to a level that I hadn't been before
06:48we played that series there were a lot of veterans around the league voucher for me as being the next
06:52up and I was just kind of waiting in the wings I was just betting on myself to be a guy that was
06:58going to be one of the premier athletes in the company and Nike didn't take long after that to
07:04come to me and offer me a signature sneaker I was in Portland Oregon on campus they showed me around
07:14saw how everything was ran all the different opportunities I had with my line with my
07:21signature shoe now I was just sitting there in amazement man like man wow I'm about to have my
07:26own brand inside of Nike we did talk strategically and the decision was we need to do something
07:35serious about basketball and Penny's love for basketball now's not the time for comedy in my
07:42head I'm like yes it is I'm gonna go get that puppet now the puppet ended up on my client's shelf that
07:49Nike so I stole the puppet out of my client's office put it in a box had it beside me in the
07:55meeting we presented three campaigns in that meeting two of which were not mine and they were good
08:02campaigns they were serious about basketball I open up it's time for his Mars Blackman I got this puppet
08:10pulling out of the box what if I did the puppet kind of like a comedy version of his alter ego but his
08:18alter ego is a puppet and he'll say things that Penny could never say and we'll call him little
08:24penny and the room just cracked up Nike loved it in the conference room at the table just talking
08:33about what do you think of an alter ego a guy that's gonna talk trash for you and then you go back it up
08:38and I loved it right away because I knew it would be a hit that's when everything started to take off
08:43in the marionette commercial he was quite traditionally a marionette with strings so
08:49we re-engineered him and clipped his strings he was alive and quite complicated it wasn't post it
08:56wasn't what you probably do today which is making CGI as a team we had never built an animatronic puppet
09:03before because I was actually a trained puppeteer I got the cheery job of operating little penny's head
09:10and eyes we didn't really know what was going to be required of us until we got on set
09:16five puppeteers operating one puppet you really need to be one mind and I think that first commercial
09:25was just trying to figure out like how does this even work
09:27I was just focusing on making him look at look in the right direction with the eyes and not make his head
09:36look you know like it's about to jerk right off his shoulders we were just sweating I mean you know
09:41how much it costs to shoot a commercial like that we didn't really have a flow yet we had a script
09:49that was temporary we didn't have the actual audio and Stacy would stand you know over behind the
09:57camera and just say stuff
09:59thought well what if little penny had the voice and the confidence and the comedy of Eddie Murphy's character
10:07in coming to America the older man during the barbershop
10:10Joe Louis always lied about his age he lied about his age all the time one time Frank Sinatra comes out here
10:15and sat down in this chair and I said Frank you hang out with Joe Louis just between me and you
10:19how old is Joe Louis you know what Frank told me he said hey Joe Louis 137 years old 137 years old
10:24and Eddie Murphy says yeah unless you pay me 10 million dollars I'm not doing it
10:29fuck you
10:31Nike did it last night
10:32Nike wants to try at that point for more like what you might call A-list
10:36and then I think they offered it to a couple more people and then we offered it to Chris Rock
10:41there are no celebrities here
10:43and no disrespect to Chris
10:44at that point he was an A-lister no one knew it yet
10:48now they're so desperate they're thinking about flying in the cast from hanging with Mr. Cooper
10:52at that time he was working for Comedy Central doing political comedy
10:59but I remembered obviously all the great stuff he'd done on SNL
11:02and just how he could be the voice of this campaign quite confidently
11:06Oscar, Oscar, Oscar, Oscar
11:08you always worrying about the white man's Oscar
11:12boy you don't need no Oscar
11:13I got an award for you right here
11:15what's that?
11:18I call this the buster
11:19so we were lucky because we were able to get him
11:23and then as we got him
11:26he became more successful
11:28so then we had the equity of like
11:29oh, Chris Rock is the voice of Little Penny
11:31had he become Chris Rock maybe six months
11:34we wouldn't have been able to afford him
11:36forget the fuck
11:38forget the fuck
11:39hey Penny
11:41what do they call these shoes anyway?
11:43Air Penny
11:44hmm
11:45so who you guys playing tonight anyway?
11:46Minnesota
11:47oh
11:48Los Lobos
11:50Penny
11:50Penny
11:50I want to say hello to my man Kevin Garnett
11:53Kevin Garnett
11:53yeah yeah yeah Garnett
11:54we went to high school together
11:56tell him Little Penny from the Science Club says hello
11:58can you do that for a brother?
12:01Chris Rock obviously got the ball rolling with the recordings
12:03everything Chris did in the first campaign inspired what we did next
12:07I'd written a spot where Penny was on the couch with Little Penny
12:12and a really bad Nike commercial comes on with Penny
12:15but I remember going in to record Chris for that
12:18he liked this yellow couch
12:19he goes how about at the beginning I say
12:21is that couch real leather?
12:22because it's sticking to my leg
12:23wow Little Penny is real
12:26and that was one of the things that Penny Hardaway was so cool about
12:28I don't remember one time Penny talking to the puppet
12:31and then just turning and cracking up or saying this is too weird
12:34he was just able to do it
12:35I guess Spike Lee wasn't available
12:38if it weren't basketball I wanted to do acting
12:42I love acting so that to me was a part of acting
12:45with Chris Rock not being there but the voiceover with the puppet
12:47so I was just kind of showing my acting skills
12:50I kind of enjoyed that
12:51so that's why I kind of took to the puppet
12:53Nike really held it down man
12:58I loved everything that they built for me
13:01we talked about the makeup of the shoe
13:03talked about the color scheme
13:05they asked me a ton of questions about what I like
13:08I love cars, sports cars
13:10I love like sleek, dynamic things
13:13and they put that all into the thought process
13:15of making the mold of the shoe
13:16I'm a sneaker head
13:19so to have my own sneaker with my logo
13:20was amazing
13:22in Portland, Oregon at that time
13:26Nike doesn't test
13:27Nike's not putting commercials through research
13:29to tell us
13:30oh we need to talk about this more
13:31we're kind of isolated
13:33at the time we don't have internet feedback
13:36we don't have anything
13:37but just kind of
13:38I don't know
13:39it's either going to be the weirdest campaign on the air
13:41or it's going to be super popular
13:43and friends of mine had gone to shoot with Kenny Lofton
13:45for a Nike baseball campaign
13:47they came back
13:48and they said
13:48Stacey, all Lofton wants to talk about is Little Penny
13:51Spike Lee
13:56who was on Nike's Board of Directors
13:58liked it
13:59and said
14:00I want to direct the second round
14:01and I remember thinking
14:03hmm
14:04that must mean this thing is hitting
14:05picture this
14:07romantic comedy
14:08when directed by me
14:09starring you and Tara Banks
14:10be a smash
14:11yeah that's fine Spike
14:13this is Spike
14:13no disrespect
14:14but I'm trying to watch my main man Penny
14:16dismantle the Knicks
14:17what's up Spike
14:18what's up
14:19hey Penny
14:19pass it to the Knicks
14:20no no no
14:21not me
14:21horse
14:22Penny
14:22pass it to the horse
14:23he's open
14:23on the baseline
14:24on the baseline
14:25what
14:26five seconds
14:27thanks a lot
14:28hey
14:29just trying to help my man
14:30as we did more of the commercials
14:32we get to security at the airports
14:34and open the box
14:35and people go
14:36oh that's Little Penny
14:37they knew who he was
14:39right
14:39so
14:39we're starting to realize
14:41it was starting to pick up
14:42hi guys
14:43hey
14:44we were informed
14:45that Little Penny
14:46was going to
14:47start wooing
14:49Tyra Banks
14:49so uh
14:50what's been going on here
14:51they decided to
14:52have Little Penny
14:53get interested in her
14:55oh good
14:56cool
14:56Tyra Banks was the
14:58supermodel on the cover
14:59of Sports Illustrated
15:00she was the most beautiful
15:01captivating woman
15:02in the world
15:03then again
15:05we had the equity
15:06and the popularity
15:06now of Little Penny
15:07and Nike
15:08and certainly
15:09she finds out
15:10Spike's directing it
15:11so we were able
15:12to get Tyra
15:12and then Tyra
15:14became a part
15:15of the world
15:15alright
15:16Little Penny
15:17Penny's the team leader
15:21but I'm the choreographer
15:22for the magic dance
15:23get you a jog
15:24if you want
15:24hey
15:25woo woo
15:26Penny
15:26stop the car
15:27that was Tyra Banks
15:29boo
15:29everywhere I went
15:31everybody was like
15:32quoting the commercials
15:33they were quoting
15:35Little Penny's statements
15:35you know
15:36the sayings
15:37and all those
15:38different things
15:39that he was saying
15:40people everywhere I went
15:41they were saying
15:41hey
15:41that's Tyra Banks fool
15:43everywhere I went
15:44so I knew
15:45that everyone was loving it
15:47Little Penny
15:47people love to laugh
15:51there's so much going on
15:53in our world
15:53that
15:54it's disappointing
15:56you can give someone
15:57a chance to laugh
15:58I think that they
15:59welcome that
16:00so I think because
16:00it was comedy
16:01people fell in love
16:02with the comedy side of it
16:03are you having a party
16:05in my house
16:05I just
16:07I'll never forget
16:08those moments
16:08wherever I saw
16:09a billboard
16:10or a poster
16:10or saw a commercial
16:12on TV
16:12I was like
16:13wow
16:14I have my own
16:14signature shoe
16:15never felt the pressure
16:20I just wanted to be myself
16:21I knew that the reason
16:23why I got it
16:23was being me
16:24and it wasn't going to
16:25make me change
16:26who I was
16:27I mean I stayed
16:28very confident
16:29in my game
16:29I didn't get arrogant
16:31and at that time
16:34in my prime
16:35I was at a level
16:36that was unbelievable
16:38and I studied
16:40and I worked on my game
16:41very hard
16:41and it wasn't because
16:42of having a signature shoe
16:43it was because
16:44of the pride I had
16:45of wanting to be
16:45the best card in the world
16:46Penny Hardaway
16:51was one of the more
16:52impactful players
16:53on the court
16:53it was really perfect
16:55in many ways
16:55because off the court
16:57the Little Penny campaign
16:58sort of set the stage
16:59for where the 90s were going
17:01it was more about
17:03showing the bright
17:04and fun side
17:05of where basketball
17:06was headed
17:06it was also how
17:07his shoes were designed
17:08Little Penny
17:10had to have different shoes
17:12sculpted for every set
17:13of commercials
17:13that we did
17:14because the style
17:15would change
17:16so we'd have to make
17:18new shoes for him
17:19every time
17:19there was always
17:22a shot of a shoe
17:23but the focus
17:25in the commercials
17:26when we were on set
17:27the directors were going
17:28can he have more
17:29attitude here
17:29can he look up
17:31at Penny
17:31on this line
17:32they were really
17:33focused on the performance
17:34what's the title
17:36of this painting
17:36it's a little something
17:37I like to call
17:38undiscovered genius
17:39of the Memphis hardwood
17:41where you going
17:42Puppets say stuff
17:44that humans can't say
17:45that character
17:48of Little Penny
17:49in a way
17:49I think is actually
17:50tied into some
17:51deeper cultural
17:53connection
17:54that goes way
17:55way back
17:55like for hundreds
17:56of years
17:57puppets
17:58puppets always
17:59are able
18:00to walk
18:01that line
18:02between what's
18:03kind of
18:03off color
18:04or forbidden
18:06or taboo
18:06for a person
18:07to say
18:08if you think
18:09of ventriloquist
18:10dummies
18:10they're always
18:11cracking jokes
18:12and saying things
18:12that are rude
18:13and insulting people
18:14and stuff like that
18:15those old
18:17smart ass
18:18wise cracking
18:19off color puppets
18:20are Little Penny's
18:21ancestors
18:22I think my favorite
18:24spot that we did
18:25was
18:26I don't know
18:26what it's called
18:27but it's where
18:28they're shooting
18:28a cop movie
18:29like Little Penny
18:31and Anthony
18:32are like
18:32renegade cops
18:34I don't play
18:35by the rules
18:36I don't do
18:36what the man
18:37tells me
18:38I'm getting calls
18:39from the mayor
18:40irate citizens
18:41even my wife
18:42is upset
18:43what part of the
18:43word undercover
18:44do you clowns
18:45not understand
18:46it was a set up
18:47as soon as the game
18:49ended
18:49everything went crazy
18:50by that time
18:58Anthony was also
18:59kind of getting
19:00really relaxed
19:01and he was getting
19:01used to the relationship
19:02and the relationship
19:04between the two of them
19:04was actually kind of
19:05blossoming
19:06well you know
19:06the movie's called
19:07double action
19:08you know
19:08and if you would have
19:09been in it
19:09it would have been
19:09triple action
19:10so you know
19:10they couldn't
19:10change the name
19:11of the movie
19:11so that's how
19:13that went down
19:13so it's a penny
19:15thing right
19:16yeah
19:16I understand
19:17oh I want you
19:19just be quiet
19:19so then
19:20when they said
19:21he's gonna do
19:21a Super Bowl
19:22commercial
19:23we were like
19:23I guess that
19:24kind of makes sense
19:25you know
19:26he's skyrocketed
19:27to the top
19:28of cultural icons
19:29all of a sudden
19:31we're like
19:32hey
19:32remember we pitched
19:33Charles Barkley
19:33Super Bowl party
19:34so we thought
19:35let's do that
19:36for Little Penny
19:36we had so many
19:39Nike athletes
19:40I mean I'm just
19:41remembering
19:41all the people
19:42that were at
19:42this party
19:43everybody wanted
19:44to be in it
19:45don't you hear
19:46that bell ringing
19:46hey
19:47come on in
19:48the Jets will be
19:49next year's Super Bowl
19:50excuse me
19:51hey oh please
19:51show me
19:52welcome to my party
19:53I got dancing food
19:55and parents tripped
19:56of it in my backyard
19:57who does a brother
19:59have to know
19:59to get a little taste
20:00of potato salad
20:01party
20:01good job
20:02it was an Oscars
20:03type night
20:04of who's who
20:05in that one home
20:07in Orlando
20:07when we were shooting
20:08that Super Bowl commercial
20:09that's when I knew
20:11it was really real
20:13when you had those
20:13type of athletes
20:14Hall of Fame athletes
20:15coming to your commercial
20:16yeah I miss the Maps
20:17a lot commercial
20:17when I look back
20:18on that commercial man
20:19iconic
20:20Stevie Wonder
20:22was there
20:22you gotta be
20:23at a penny party
20:23as people were
20:25kind of leaving
20:25and we were
20:26kind of wrapping
20:26different celebrities
20:27and stuff
20:28as Stevie Wonder
20:29was done
20:29he said he wanted
20:30to know
20:31what this thing was
20:32what is Little Penny
20:33Stevie put his hands
20:39on my hands
20:40and on some of
20:41the other puppeteers
20:42hands
20:42then he kind of
20:43felt his way
20:43along the cables
20:44all the way
20:45over to the puppet
20:46and then we made
20:48the puppet move
20:48and we actually
20:51have a picture
20:51somewhere
20:52of Stevie Wonder
20:53and Little Penny
20:54sitting on his shoulder
20:56and to me
20:58that was just so cool
20:59that Stevie Wonder
21:00had his hands
21:01on my hands
21:02to see how
21:03I operated
21:03Little Penny
21:04they briefed us
21:07for the last round
21:08of Little Penny
21:09they didn't really say
21:10it was gonna be
21:11the last round
21:11but I kind of
21:12could feel it
21:12I was the creative
21:15director at
21:16Wind & Kennedy now
21:17so I was also
21:18involved with other
21:18commercials
21:19and improving
21:20other commercials
21:20and I wrote a campaign
21:22where Little Penny
21:24was gonna
21:25collapse courtside
21:27at a magic game
21:28and be taken out
21:28on a stretcher
21:29and then he would be
21:30in the hospital
21:31and everyone would be
21:32worried about him
21:33we had a spot
21:37where Penny came
21:38into the hospital
21:39and was holding
21:39his hand
21:40and saying
21:40keep fighting
21:41keep fighting LP
21:42and then
21:43we would zoom
21:44into Little Penny's head
21:45and he was boxing
21:46the Grim Reaper
21:46and then we were
21:49gonna do this whole thing
21:50where you track
21:51his vital statistics
21:52as he tracked Penny's
21:53on court statistics
21:55and Penny was gonna
21:57have spots where he says
21:57I'm doing it for Little Penny
21:58keep fighting
21:59and then ultimately
22:01we were gonna have him die
22:02and we were gonna have
22:04a New Orleans funeral
22:05for him
22:06I know it sounds
22:08terrible and grim
22:10and everything
22:10it was just a funny way
22:12to end the campaign
22:13I go out and pitch this
22:16to Nike
22:16and this is where you
22:18push your reputation
22:19and your trust too far
22:21and they were like
22:22Stacy
22:23we're not gonna kill
22:24Little Penny
22:25clearly it was one step
22:27too far for Nike
22:28so I'm a kind of
22:31I'm mad that they killed
22:32Little Penny
22:32dying
22:33and so I was kind of like
22:36in a place
22:36where I thought
22:37well maybe the last
22:38Little Penny commercial
22:39should just be a parody
22:40of a Nike commercial
22:41and let's parody ourselves
22:42I mean the Jordan ad
22:53at the time
22:53was a very popular
22:54Nike commercial
22:55and so to parody
22:57this very sincere
22:58beautiful commercial
22:59there was certainly
23:00always an effort to say
23:01well if it's gonna be
23:02a little penny commercial
23:03we gotta do something
23:04that's a little bit audacious
23:05and just think of
23:06okay well it's all about
23:07slow motion
23:08so let's just think of
23:09stupid things in slow motion
23:10so we created
23:11Frozen Penny
23:12you guys remind me of my shoe closet
23:14I got one penny
23:15and a bunch of loophies
23:17we were always just trying to
23:26keep Nike relevant
23:28keep Nike cool
23:29the development
23:30and the design of the shoes
23:32and the apparel
23:32was always gonna be that
23:33so we just needed
23:34the advertising
23:35to compliment that
23:36and support it
23:37the kids will find the shoe
23:42if they feel like
23:43their player
23:44that they're already
23:44captivated by
23:45is now even cooler
23:46because he's got this
23:47campaign on the air
23:48that's like
23:49a life of its own
23:50doesn't seem to play
23:51by the rules of advertising
23:52and then that'll lead you
23:54to the shoe
23:55in a matter of just
24:08two and a half years
24:09Penny Hardaway
24:10has established himself
24:11as one of the best talents
24:12in the NBA
24:13arguably among the top five
24:15players in the league
24:16Peter Bessie
24:16spoke with Orlando's
24:18all-star guard
24:18here it is
24:19you've said before
24:20that you want to be the best
24:21right?
24:23definitely
24:23yet you have to defer
24:24to Shaquille
24:25you don't have to be the best
24:26by scoring points
24:27I can do other things
24:28you know I can rebound
24:29block shots
24:30assist the ball
24:31I can score points also
24:32I mean I don't have to just
24:33do one certain thing
24:35to be the best
24:35you're the best
24:36when you can do everything
24:37how do you do that?
24:38how do you dedicate yourself
24:39to the team like that?
24:41well I want to win
24:42and that's our go-to guy
24:43Shaquille
24:44and we go into him
24:45everything starts with him
24:46and we go from there
24:47you know we have no jealousy
24:48amongst each other
24:49it didn't take long
24:51for Shaquille to realize
24:52that his turf
24:54was being
24:55pounced upon
24:56there was kind of
24:58some debates
24:58who's the better player
25:00and it was kind of
25:01rubbing Shaq
25:01the wrong way
25:03I think he grew tired
25:06of being kind of
25:08a fishbowl
25:09which you know
25:10Orlando
25:11small market
25:12he had a decision to make
25:14and everybody kind of
25:15hoped for the best
25:17and feared the worst
25:18what about your future
25:20here in Orlando
25:22you'll be an unrestricted free agent
25:23at the end of the season
25:24do you want to
25:25remain here in Orlando?
25:27Orlando is
25:28the first option
25:29but
25:30I think I'm going to have to
25:32test the market
25:33and look at all my options
25:34so
25:35because
25:36you're sort of
25:37avoiding my
25:37my question
25:38Orlando is the first option
25:40the Bulls
25:41have swept the Magic
25:43Jordan
25:44finishes
25:44with 45 points
25:46the Bulls
25:47do it
25:47106
25:48to 101
25:50as the Orlando Magic
25:53have been swept
25:54from the playoffs
25:55they were swept by the Bulls
25:57and they weren't even close
25:58because this was a Michael
25:59who was hungry
26:00during the championship
26:01and then you could hear
26:03the drumbeat
26:04starting
26:04that Shaq
26:05was looking around
26:07because
26:07back then
26:08Shaquille
26:09was the biggest
26:10free agent
26:11in the history of sports
26:13Orlando wants
26:14the Lakers won
26:16Tampa Tribune reports
26:17Shaq turned down
26:18a 7 year
26:18119 million dollar deal
26:21from the Magic
26:21his choice between
26:22LA and Orlando
26:23quote
26:24it's like two girlfriends
26:25and you want to marry
26:26both of them
26:27we'll find out soon
26:28which team will get
26:28stood up
26:29at the altar
26:30we're breaking into
26:31programming right now
26:32to bring you a live
26:33news conference
26:34about to take place
26:35at which Shaquille O'Neal
26:36is expected to announce
26:37that he has signed
26:38a 7 year
26:40120 million dollar contract
26:42to join the LA Lakers
26:44when Shaq
26:46when Shaq left Orlando
26:47in 96
26:48it was the biggest
26:49free agent loss
26:50in basketball history
26:51he just could not
26:53turn down
26:54the big market
26:55he had a
26:57great understanding
26:58of what
26:58what weights
26:59a player
27:00in Los Angeles
27:01movies
27:03music
27:04toys
27:04it was sort of
27:06towards the end
27:07of the Shaq run
27:07in Orlando
27:08where
27:09Penny Hardaway
27:10was getting marketing
27:11from Nike
27:11at the highest level
27:12and his shoes
27:13were definitely
27:14taking over
27:14Shaq's line
27:15from Reebok
27:16Shaq had a commercial
27:19poking fun
27:20at the Little Penny
27:21character
27:21swiping out
27:22a puppet
27:23from the scene
27:24this is my planet
27:25you got room for
27:26a brother on your planet
27:27Shaq was always
27:28somebody that
27:29tried to have fun
27:30with his commercials
27:31and take a light tone
27:32but that one felt
27:33a little personal
27:33when you fast forward
27:36to 1996
27:37Reebok was dwindling
27:39and trying to find
27:40their footing
27:40in basketball
27:41Shaq had the Shaqnosis
27:45Sean Kemp
27:46had the kamikaze
27:47like all that stuff
27:48was coming out
27:49during that time
27:50I got my start
27:52at Reebok
27:52through an internship
27:53there was a guy
27:55who was in the
27:55basketball division
27:56at Reebok
27:57that was leaving
27:57they asked me
28:00would I be interested
28:01and the role was called
28:02they were like
28:02you're gonna be a bum
28:03I was like a bum
28:05like why would I
28:05want to be a bum
28:06but they were like
28:07no it's an acronym
28:08it stands for
28:09business unit manager
28:10so we're basically
28:13working in a futures
28:14business
28:14we have a lot of
28:15great things happening
28:16but it's still
28:17something missing
28:18we still don't have
28:19that thing
28:20George Dyle
28:21UMass Quinn
28:22this is one
28:22everybody wants to see
28:23I mean I'm excited
28:24like you
28:25when two teams
28:25you're talking about
28:26here
28:26I'm a huge Georgia fan
28:28and I'm watching
28:28this game
28:29and they're playing
28:30UMass
28:31they're playing
28:32Marcus Campbell
28:33when you got the
28:33player of the year
28:34Marcus Campbell
28:35he presents some
28:35problems for Georgetown
28:36my guy comes down
28:38he's on the left
28:38hand side
28:39never forget it
28:39he's on the left
28:40hand side
28:40just crossed half
28:42court with the ball
28:42in his left hand
28:43he just hits that
28:46little cross
28:47like not as vicious
28:48as he was hitting it
28:49in the NBA
28:49it was more of a quick
28:50one
28:50it just comes down
28:51changes speed
28:52comes right down
28:53the middle
28:53two hands
28:54boom
28:54right on Marcus Campbell
28:55I say oh
28:58that's it right there
28:59that's what I need
29:00we need him on our team
