00:00You don't have a career as long and distinguished as Disney CEO Bob Iger's without knowing how to
00:06make a shrewd deal. And I think he's just pulled off another one. It's a deal I think has big
00:10ramifications for Hollywood, the creative industries and artificial intelligence. Disney
00:14and OpenAI announced on Thursday that users of the Sora video app will soon be able to include
00:20around 200 of Disney's legendary characters in clips generated by the app. Disney will receive
00:25a license fee for use of those characters and will also invest a billion dollars into OpenAI,
00:30giving it a sizable stake in the most valuable private AI company. Soon there will be AI
00:35functions within the Disney Plus app too. There is one big caveat however, the characters won't be
00:40able to actually talk since the deal doesn't cover voices. That means the clips will be more like the
00:45original Mickey Mouse cartoon Steamboat Willie which doesn't seem much fun to me honestly. I don't think
00:51it would do much to keep Sora interesting for the millions that have downloaded it but now one
00:55wonder exactly what it's useful for. The deal does make it clear. If AI companies want to use art made
01:01by human beings, they need to pay for it or face the consequences. OpenAI had to make this deal
01:07because otherwise Disney would have likely sued them as it is now threatening to do with Google. Bob Iger
01:12has stood up for Disney's long proud history of incredible storytelling and I hope the deal paves
01:17the way for other content deals just like it. What do you think?
