It’s tough to both be a film’s director and play the director in the film. In this video, Noah Baumbach shares how he got his role in ‘Jay Kelly’ and had to direct himself while acting as he was directing the scene with the other actors.

00:00Was it confusing for you to be directing yourself as the director of the film within the film?
00:05I hadn't acted in a while.
00:07But you were so good.
00:08I forced you.
00:09Yeah, George cast me in the part.
00:11I forced him.
00:12I know.
00:12I'm so glad you did.
00:14Oh, so good.
00:14Well, I think it actually made it easier for me because I could essentially direct the scene and be in the scene at the same time, which would, I think, you know, you've done that where you've directed yourself.
00:27And I wouldn't even know how to begin with that.
00:33It's terrible.
00:33I mean, because you're breaking a one cardinal rule actors can't do to actors, which is you and I are doing a scene and I'm directing it and we do the scene.
00:42The one cardinal rule is I can't tell you what to do.
00:45Right, right, right.
00:46But then you're the director.
00:47You go, OK, that was good.
00:48That made me go fast.
00:50It's such a shit thing to do.
00:52That's funny.
00:52So usually I have to talk to the actors going, I'm really, I apologize for this part, you know.
00:56And then you've got to learn the ventriloquist.
00:58I have this other job over there on the other side.
01:01Sorry.
01:02You've got to learn the ventriloquist cut, too.
01:04Oh, it doesn't.
01:04Cut.
01:07Is it cut?
01:08Huh?
01:09I'm really good, let's see.
01:11A little faster.
01:13Who are you?
01:14Who am I looking at?
01:15Just kidding.
01:16All right.
01:17So do I act with him, too?
01:19No.
01:19All right.
