00:00We are back with another Instagram live interview, this time with Haley Orantia, who is on The Goldbergs, you may know her from, as well as a singer, so she has some new music coming out. We're really pumped to talk to her about it, as well as the finale of The Goldbergs, which airs next week, but before that we have another fun episode that she will be starring in this week, so we will talk about it with her.
00:26Hi, Haley. How are you? Good, how are you? I'm good. It is so lovely to see you. You're beautiful. Thank you. Oh my gosh, I love the eyes. Guys, I'm going to, as usual, turn off the comments. If you have questions, send them into the question box, but I want to be able to see Haley's gorgeous face.
00:47Oh my gosh. I was like, thank you for saying that, because I had a panic attack yesterday.
00:52Oh my gosh. They look amazing. They frame your face so beautifully. We love it. And love, you know, May's Mental Health Month, so got to be open about those panics.
01:04And thank you for that. Going through it. Yes. I understand. I heard that the moons are in, like, weird things with, like, some Taurus and Pisces.
01:17Yeah. Yeah. Lots. Some just chaos. Chaos. Some planetary chaos, and we're feeling it, but it's okay.
01:26It's okay. Well, we are so happy to have you here today, Haley. And I am so excited about this new music that you have coming out. So you dropped a single last month. You have another one coming up. Tell me a little bit about what has been inspiring your songwriting right now.
01:44Oh, man. Well, I feel like in the last year, I have been kind of getting back to my roots of just writing with me and a piano. And it's been really good for me as far as, like, just, I don't know, just focusing on lyrically, like, these stories I want to tell.
02:02And maybe when I kind of break it all down and go there, I can kind of come back to this new producer I've been working with, Ben, who is phenomenal.
02:10And then helping me shape sort of this new sound that I feel like I'm transitioning into. So as much as I love country and I'm not trying to run away from it, I'm keeping elements of that and sort of transitioning to more of a pop-leaning direction that I'm really excited about.
02:25So fun. And how will this next single kind of meld into the tracks that we'll continue to get from you?
02:39Well, this one, I feel like, again, we wanted to add, like, elements of, like, the nod to my past within the country music.
02:47And so I really love that we kind of start out the song with just an acoustic guitar, making you think, like, we're going to be doing that again.
02:54And then we come in with this beat that it's just very pop-driven.
02:59I feel like we're playing with songs where there's just overall pop to me throughout any other genre that I've dabbled with in my life.
03:08That's kind of been the remaining factor.
03:10And so I'm really excited to be able to kind of let that be the shining element of this next phase of music.
03:15Like, while this song, Open Your Mouth, is this really fun, upbeat song, typically in the past I've also released a lot of ballads.
03:23So I'm really excited of wanting to be releasing more upbeat, something fun to sing along to, dance to.
03:29These next series of songs after that as well, while having been written in, you know, being a piano, maybe even more of a ballad,
03:37I'm challenging myself to turn them on their head and make them more upbeat and then offering acoustic ballad version afterwards.
03:46So I'm challenging myself a little bit musically, and I'm really loving kind of the direction that we've been going in.
03:53That is so fun.
03:55And it's really great, too, to have the country background, especially when it comes to songwriting and lyrically.
04:03What you're putting out can be as deep as any country song, but have, you know, this fun, upbeat tune to it.
04:12Totally.
04:12I think the thing I love about country music, again, and I'm sure a lot of people say this, it's the storytelling aspect of songs that, even with this song,
04:22where it may not be pulling at your heartstrings, this new single, Open Your Mouth, it's definitely a storytelling kind of song.
04:29It's painting a picture of something that my friend who I wrote it with, Kaylee, was kind of telling me about running into her ex at a bar,
04:37having these expectations of, like, oh, we haven't talked in a while.
04:39He looks pretty good.
04:40Like, why did we break up again?
04:41And then he starts talking, and you're like, oh, right, I remember now.
04:45Work out.
04:46So, but you kind of follow along this whole journey of the night, and that, I feel like, is elements of what I really love about country music and songwriting,
04:55that I'm trying to really keep alive in my music, no matter what genre I dabble in, because it's just, it resonates with people.
05:03You know, you want to just want to hear these stories told, and yeah, I'm really, really excited about it.
05:08Oh, well, we cannot wait to hear it either.
05:11Now, you are also in the midst of season nine of The Goldbergs, and that finale will be in about a week, I believe.
05:21So, of course, we have some questions about that.
05:25Now that Erica and Jeff are married, what's ahead for them?
05:29Do you think there could be a baby in the future?
05:31I mean, that would be incredible.
05:35I will say I'm very excited for people to tune into this finale, because there's going to be a lot of big sort of cliffhanger changes that I'm really looking forward to telling those stories in season 10.
05:46But as far as Jeff and Erica goes, I wish I knew what the writers had planned most of the time, but they love to leave them on a string as well.
05:54I would love to see, personally, I would love to see Jeff and Erica have a baby, because I think that it would create such hilarious storylines for Beverly to be able to, like, you know, be her over smotherly type self.
06:10And I also, one storyline I would love to see, again, if this is something the writers are interested in, I feel like currently Barry and Joanne's new relationship that's been happening, which is my character's brother and Sam, my husband's character's sister, are now dating.
06:29And they're just this wacky kind of couple, like, they make sense together, but, like, Lord knows how they're getting through life.
06:38I would love to see them babysitting, because I think it would just be chaos.
06:43What's more Goldberg's than that?
06:45That is absolutely true.
06:47That is such a funny concept.
06:48We would love to see it.
06:49Hopefully some writers are watching right now.
06:52Tune in, guys.
06:53Now, it's such an incredible feat for a show to reach 10 seasons.
06:59I mean, huge.
07:00What was your reaction when you found out that news?
07:03Honestly, I feel like I'm still pinching myself a little bit, because I say this all the time, but when you first audition for something, you're just hoping to book it.
07:13And then you're hoping that it gets picked up for a pilot, and then you're hoping that it gets picked up for a season.
07:18And then you can't really grasp the idea of doing a decade into a show as amazing as it sounds.
07:26So the fact that we, that's happening, it still doesn't really feel real, to be honest with you.
07:32But we genuinely do have such an amazing time with cast and crew.
07:36We've had a lot of the same crew members since the first season.
07:40And I just forward to seeing them every day.
07:43And so to be able to say that, like, we've worked with these people for 10 years, when typically in the industry, crew changes all the time.
07:51Like, you might work a show for five episodes and then never see these people again.
07:55It's been such a blessing to be able to stick with these people that, like, we just are like family.
08:01I know that's so cliche, but we really are.
08:03And I think that we just are so grateful to everyone who's been tuning in for so long because it's allowed us to have that sort of relationship that's lasted longer than you would ever anticipate.
08:15It's been so special to follow these characters for this whole journey because there's been a lot of things that have happened.
08:23And, yeah, just so overwhelmingly grateful and excited because it's also kind of scary, though, I'm not going to lie.
08:31When you're doing a show for 10 years, you get so comfortable that it's like, well, how do I transition after this?
08:38As far as I feel like we've been so lucky with the people we've been blessed to work with on this show that I'm like, is it just downhill from here?
08:46Or like, because, like, the bar is really high.
08:50Oh, my gosh.
08:51I mean, it's such an incredible feat.
08:54And it's really just a tribute to you guys and the stories that you're telling and that consistency, too, behind the scenes, I'm sure.
09:03Yeah, no, I'm honestly, the writers are amazing.
09:06I don't know how they've been able to, like, I can barely try to write a script, much less try to keep 22 episodes a year.
09:14So I just we always lean on them because they they know what they're doing.
09:18And it's been such a ride.
09:20Is there anything that you still want to explore or storylines that you'd like to explore with Erica?
09:28Ooh, I mean, it's hard.
09:31I think that we've seen Erica in the last few years kind of come into her own.
09:36And as much as she loves music and that's something that she has been wanting to pursue as well, she's come into the reality that, like, maybe that's not happening for her.
09:45And so she's found, you know, going back to law school was something she not only really wanted to do, but she's really good at.
09:51And so I would love to see Erica maybe in her element of actually doing law.
09:57But I feel like it's pretty early on.
09:59So I don't know, maybe season 20 we could really get into.
10:02But but for me, I would love to see sort of that aspect of her career showcased more on the show because we haven't gotten into it a ton.
10:11And then also selfishly, I, I really loved when we did these throwback moments where we did like sixth grade Erica, where I had braces and glasses and frizzy hair.
10:22They were just so fun.
10:23And I don't I mean, I'm sure we've played it up enough, but I selfishly would love to do more of those in any capacity.
10:31I mean, that is just fun.
10:33Really being able to like that.
10:35You're obviously always acting, but that's like extreme acting.
10:38It's like there's a lisp that we add on to it.
10:42It's just it's a very fun, over the top, like comedic part of the character that I just love getting to do.
10:49Mm hmm.
10:50And what can you tease about this upcoming season nine finale?
10:54Oh, oh, lots of cliffhangers.
10:59Oh, there's a big opportunity that Erica gets.
11:04Um, that kind of leaves her in this sort of limbo of like, to a fork in the road of sorts of like life decisions.
11:12And it's I'm very curious, as people watch, just like see maybe guess where they think she's going to go with it.
11:20Um, amazing job of you thinking you know what's going to happen and that it just isn't what you think it is.
11:26Um, so I'm just excited for people to follow that journey and I will be on Twitter because I'm dying to hear what people have to say about how it ends.
11:35Yes.
11:35Do you know which way it's going to go?
11:38I do.
11:39I do.
11:40Hell yeah.
11:41Okay.
11:42Because, you know, sometimes they like write it in and then they're like, actually, never mind.
11:45You're going to go this other way and you don't find out.
11:48But it's, um, it's going to be a very, it's going to be an exciting season 10.
11:53Okay, we can't wait.
11:56Um, now what is an 80s pop culture moment that the show has yet to explore that you would want them to in season 10?
12:05That is a, that's tough because I didn't grow up in the 80s.
12:08Me either.
12:09I, so I'm like, there's only, I know.
12:13Um, and I feel like we've covered it.
12:15But, um, pop culture wise, I mean, the one thing I kept begging for was a, um,
12:23Breakfast Club episode and we got that.
12:25Um, I don't know.
12:27I, I wish I had more pop culture, 80s pop culture in my back pocket to tell you.
12:32But, um, I'm going to let that be up to the one, the experts of the decade.
12:36Yeah, the ones who were there.
12:40Yeah, the ones, the ones who know what we really need to touch on and what we can maybe leave in the past.
12:44Yeah.
12:46Totally.
12:47Um, now you have been with the Goldberg family for a decade now.
12:51How have your co-stars shaped who you are today?
12:54Oh my gosh.
12:55In a huge way.
12:57Huge way.
12:58Because I came out here and then immediately started working on the show.
13:02So my entirety of living in L.A. has been, the foundation of it has been the show and working with these people.
13:09And it's, I mean, it's been a journey.
13:11Like, we're all going through it together.
13:13And that's the comforting part is, like, no matter the weird sort of aspects of, of the industry or just this life in general that we're having to do,
13:22we can do it together and we can lean on each other.
13:24Um, but I've made such, like, lifelong friends within these people.
13:31Um, I mean, that's such a broad question as far as, like, as far as I, I just, I genuinely love them.
13:40And, and they've really helped, I know I've said this, but, like, create the foundation of, like, what it should look like on set.
13:47You know, like, they're such good people and they fight for what's right, but they are so talented and they come to the table with just an endless amount of preparation.
13:59But they have the talent to back it up.
14:01And, and improv is something that I really struggled with that, like, I've been able to really learn through some of these phenomenal actors who just, I mean, you could put anything in front of them and they'll know how to make it hilarious.
14:13So, just getting to be around them and study them that way has changed my life and, and affected my career because I know going into any audition or hopefully any, like, future gig, I have this as the ultimate, like, coaching class.
14:31Like, you can't get any better.
14:33So.
14:34Cannot get any better.
14:35Very good for them for that.
14:37Yeah.
14:37And how do you feel about Erica's evolution from season one?
14:43Wow.
14:43I mean, it's been a journey because this show is based on a real family and, um, my character was the only character that was actually, um, an older brother that they turned into a sister for the sake of having a little more diversity in the cast.
14:59Yeah.
15:00And, um, it was, I mean, I'm very glad that they did it, but at the same time they didn't have a lot of storylines with a sister.
15:07Because he'd only grown up with brothers.
15:10Um, so there was sort of this, like, big question mark over where do we take Erica?
15:14And I'm very grateful that the creator, Adam F. Goldberg, was open to me sort of contributing my musical thing for my life to Erica.
15:23Yeah.
15:23Erica has been musical.
15:25And that was never intended originally for her.
15:27So she started by sort of coming into her own through music that way and then, you know, finding, like, going in and out of school and then deciding finally on going to law school and finding what she loves.
15:41And also just her journey and relationships, having been friends with Jeff for so long and not really sure if, like, I'm not going to date my brother's friend and then now they're married.
15:49Like, it's been a crazy transition of things.
15:52But, um, but I'm really excited for Erica.
15:55I know that sounds silly because she's a character.
15:57But I love this sort of journey that she's been on.
16:00And I think she's really coming to her own.
16:02Yeah.
16:03Um, now we have some fan questions in here.
16:06And I was just reading through some of them.
16:08And I did not realize that you wrote with my friend Kaylee Shore.
16:14Yes!
16:15Wait, you know Kaylee?
16:16Yes!
16:17Yay!
16:17Okay, I love her.
16:18Oh, oh my gosh.
16:20So these are going to be, I know they're going to be bangers.
16:22And I know they're going to be, like, some female-centric, hard, heavy, like, angry, fun socks.
16:31Yes.
16:31Oh, I'm so glad you don't.
16:32Okay.
16:33This single that I'm releasing, Opening Mouth, I wrote with Kaylee and Simon.
16:38And I don't know how much she wants me to out this.
16:40But Kaylee was the read, or the read, the songwriting session that day.
16:46And she sort of was like, I ran into my ex at the bar, looked really good.
16:50Then he talked, and I was like, and I'm like, let's do that.
16:54So Kaylee is the catalyst for what this song really is.
16:58And I just, I've always admired her songwriting.
17:01She's one of my favorite songwriters.
17:03And you're right, you're on the nose.
17:06Like, it's a female-empowered, sexy, like, fun song.
17:10And that's what this song is.
17:13And I'm just so stoked that we were able to work on it together.
17:16She's phenomenal.
17:18That is so fun.
17:19I can't, I'm as excited as I was.
17:22Now I am like, this might be, like, the angry girl song of summer.
17:26I don't know.
17:26Yeah.
17:27It's the one that I want all the girls.
17:29Okay, I don't know if this makes sense.
17:30But this is what I would love for it to be.
17:32You know, have you seen these TikTok videos of girls going into bathrooms?
17:36And they'll be in the stall, and they'll be like, hey, should I text my ex?
17:39And all the girls are like, no, don't do it.
17:42I want this song to, like, encapsulate that and, like, be the girls' bathroom anthem where you can all meet up and sing the lyrics of, like, when you open your mouth.
17:50And, you know what I mean?
17:51Like, that's my goal.
17:52Oh, yes.
17:53I love it.
17:54I love it.
17:55Now, that puts out a really great visual.
17:58Will you have a music video for the song?
18:01Yes.
18:02And what a journey it's been.
18:04So, I decided to really put myself and my boyfriend through the ringer and challenge him because he's also in the ringer and he's a phenomenal writer, director, like, he does all of his own stuff.
18:16And I was like, hey, what if you and I made the music video completely by ourselves?
18:22So, no lighting department, no camera, like, we do everything.
18:27The only thing I brought other people in on because I don't trust myself with it, obviously, the bangs issue is a perfect example of that.
18:35I brought in hair, makeup, and wardrobe.
18:37And I said, just make me look good, and we will handle everything else.
18:40And we did, but, boy, was it almost the death of us because it's, you know, making a music video is a big feat, and we did it, but it was literally just he and I, and bless him, I made him camera operator, DP, director, lighting department.
18:59Like, I don't know how he didn't jump off a bridge, but he nailed it, and I'm so excited for people to see the video because it's our first experiment together to produce something.
19:10from scratch, and we're proud of it, and it relates to the song and my personality, and I'm stoked for people to see it.
19:18And did you just want it to be you, too, because you were like, this could be a fun challenge, or, like, what was the impetus for you not hiring anyone else?
19:28Yeah, great, great question, because that, I would say, halfway through the editing process was like, why did I do this to us?
19:35That's pretty stupid, but no, honestly, we have, because he's, again, a writer, director, incredible, camera operator, everything, editor.
19:44I've seen him work on his own stuff, and I'm like, I know you can do it, and I want the challenge to be able to, like, I wanted to line produce for the first time, so I produced the whole thing, and I think people have an idea of what producing means to some, but it's a whole other ordeal.
20:01So, um, yeah, and, um, and the details and the shot lists and thing, and it, it was a fun challenge for us, because I know that we want to work together in this capacity on scripted material,
20:13um, and so this was kind of us dipping our toe in a little bit to feel out, like, um, in the worst case scenario, which is having no one else at all.
20:21So, for future, we probably have learned our lesson of knowing what we need, but I threw us in the deep end, and we somehow made it out alive, so.
20:30Good.
20:30Oh, well, I definitely can't wait to see the final product for that one.
20:34Um, can we expect you to tour at all this year?
20:38I have a couple of dates, um, but they're very sporadic.
20:42I don't have a specific tour planned.
20:44Um, I know I have a couple of dates at Calgary Stampede in Canada.
20:48Um, there's a couple things in the air right now, um, but July, maybe, but, um, and I can't, there's something else.
20:56I so badly want to tell you, but I can't, because it's not, but there's a really cool, um, happening early July, um, that I will be working on that takes up a chunk of that.
21:08So, um, I'm excited for people to hear about it, and I wish I could tell you more.
21:13I'm sorry.
21:14We definitely will have to just stay tuned on your socials until then, and hopefully we can talk around that.
21:20That sounds very exciting.
21:22Yeah, definitely.
21:24Perfect.
21:24Well, Haley, those are all my questions for today.
21:26Do you have anything else that you wanted to promote that's coming up?
21:29No, I mean, just keep, uh, the song, Open Your Mouth, it comes out this Friday, um, and, yeah, tune in to season 10 finale, or season 10, season 9 finale of the week after.
21:42And, yeah, I'm just so stoked for everyone to see it, so tune in.
21:46We cannot wait.
21:47All right, so Friday, May 13th, Open Your Mouth, and next week, the finale of Wednesday of the Goldbergs.
21:53Tune in, guys.
21:54Thank you so much, Haley.
