00:00The name synonymous with television courtroom judge Judy Shineland,
00:03a.k.a. Judge Judy, announced in March 2020 that her two-decade-long legal series was
00:08ending after its 2020-2021 season. Speaking on The Ellen DeGeneres Show,
00:12Shineland said,
00:13"...I've had a 25-year-long marriage with CBS and it's been successful."
00:17Sharing that the so-described marriage has yielded 25 years of reruns that the network
00:20can utilize for years to come. With Shineland's net worth estimated at a jaw-dropping $440
00:25million, she isn't just the most successful TV judge in history,
00:29but one of the most successful people in television.
00:31She also certainly didn't get to be that way by being an easy customer. In a 2019 interview with
00:35The New York Times, Shineland revealed the secret to upgrading her $47 million-a-year salary with CBS.
00:41At dinner once every three years with the president of CBS Television Distribution,
00:45Shineland would slide over an envelope concealing her ideal salary, quote,
00:48"...at the end of the meal."
00:49Once, the president had his own envelope and number in mind, to which Shineland simply replied,
00:53"...this isn't a negotiation."
00:54As she moves on to produce a new and improved version of her show for Amazon and IMDb TV,
00:58as Deadline announced, Shineland has since shared the actual reason she is leaving her CBS staple
01:03behind. Judge Judy told The Wall Street Journal and June, via People, that her CBS departure
01:07came via disagreements with the network, creating and producing another legal reality show, Hot
01:12Bench, for CBS. Shineland made bank in 2017, selling the rights to CBS for $100 million per CNBC.
01:18However, Shineland told WSJ that the company drew her ire when a few stations moved the syndicated
01:23series to secondary channels so the Drew Barrymore show could air. She told WSJ, referring to CBS,
01:28"...you disrespected my creation, and you were wrong."
01:31Per the outlet, Hot Bench averaged 2.3 million viewers this current season,
01:34while The Drew Barrymore Show only drew 719,000. Shineland continued,
01:39"...not only in disrespecting my creation, but your gamble in what you put in its place.
01:42We had a nice marriage. It's going to be a Bill and Melinda Gates divorce."
01:46Wow. CBS Media Ventures president Steve Locasio commented to The Wall Street Journal,
01:51reflecting no bad blood. He said,
01:52"...we have had an incredibly successful relationship with Judy over the last 25 years.
01:56It has been an honor representing her show. And just like there has never been another Oprah,
02:00there will never be another Judge Judy."
02:02Although Judge Judy Shineland will be gearing up for a battle with CBS, she will have plenty
02:06of money to spare. Shineland is a multimillionaire thanks to her decades-long career on television
02:10and her unwillingness to compromise early on in her career.
02:13The New York native explained to The Hollywood Reporter in May,
02:16"...the People's Court, they've had several judges. The Tonight Show has had several hosts,
02:20but I Love Lucy only had one Lucille Ball. So almost 20 years ago,
02:23I told the company that I worked for this. I want to be more of a partner. Don't treat me
02:27as a paid employee. I can make this show without you."
02:29Shineland also recalled telling the executives at CBS that, quote,
02:32"...you can't make the show without me because I can take Judy Shineland anywhere else."
02:36Shineland made true of her word as she took her courtroom talents to Amazon and IMDbTV with a new and
02:41improved version of her old show, titled Judy Justice, which is set to premiere in 2021.
02:45As for whether Shineland has maintained her status as the highest-paid TV show host,
02:49she remained coy. Sort of. Shineland told THR,
02:52"...my compensation has not been a secret. It's been out there for a long time. Not by me,
02:56but it got out there and had its own life."
02:58So the folks at Amazon understood what the parameters were. There was no issue.
