00:00One of the former stars of The Cosby Show has been spotted working at a grocery store
00:04in New Jersey.
00:05Radar Online reports that Jeffrey Owens, who played the character Elvin Thibodeau on the
00:09NBC comedy, was seen working the cash register at a Trader Joe's in Clifton, New Jersey.
00:15According to the publication, Owens, whom they called a starving artist, probably makes
00:19about $11 an hour.
00:21So just how did Radar recognize the 57-year-old actor?
00:24Well, for starters, Owens was wearing a name tag, and shoppers often reportedly identify
00:29him from his time on the once-beloved sitcom.
00:32According to Owens' mother, Ethel, with whom he lives in a two-floor home in Montclair,
00:36New Jersey, they come up and say they remember him from their childhoods.
00:39Owens starred on The Cosby Show from 1985 to 1992, portraying the husband of Sabrina Le
00:45Boeuf's Sondra Huxtable.
00:47After the series ended, he continued to work in Hollywood, but he was never able to snag
00:51a gig quite as lucrative as his role as Elvin.
00:53Hey, guys, I'm Donovan McNair.
00:56That was not Donovan McNair!
00:57That was not Donovan McNair!
00:58That was not Donovan McNair!
00:59Yes, it was.
01:00It was like a McDonald's plug!
01:01Was that the guy from The Cosby Show?
01:03Just because he hasn't had a regular role in a while doesn't mean that Owens hasn't
01:06been working.
01:07Owens appeared in the NBC comedy Built to Last for eight episodes in 1997, and the HBO dramedy
01:13Divorce as the character Gerald for three episodes in 2016.
01:17He's also made small appearances in high-profile projects like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia,
01:22Boston Legal, and Medium.
01:24Radar spoke to one woman shopping in the store who observed that Owens looked unhappy, though
01:28she noted that he was polite during their interaction.
01:31The woman also said she was shocked to discover that Owens was working at the grocery store
01:35chain when he has so much talent as an actor.
01:38According to her observations,
01:39I would have thought after The Cosby Show, he would maybe be doing something different.
01:43Understandably, Owens didn't sound too thrilled that Radar had been looking into his current
01:47whereabouts, as the Gossip Rag reported that he'd hung up on them when they called to talk
01:50about his Trader Joe's job.
01:52However, he did phone the outlet the next day to inform them of his latest acting gigs,
01:57sharing that he's been teaching a Shakespearean workshop in New York City.
02:01Money might be tighter than ever before for Owens, as he likely doesn't receive much money
02:05from The Cosby Show anymore.
02:06As Page Six reported in April 2018, reruns of the series were pulled from airing on Bounce
02:11TV after the show's star, comedian Bill Cosby, was found guilty of aggravated indecent assault
02:17against former Temple University employee Andrea Constand, one of dozens of other accusations
02:23of sexual assaults that have been brought against the once-beloved comedian in recent years.
02:27For the most part, the accusations have knocked the series out of syndication, meaning a once-reliable
02:32source of residual income for the series' stars has now been significantly cut down.
02:37So, considering his acting credentials, why might Owens be working at the grocery chain?
02:42It's possible that he just needs a flexible job to earn some money on the side while he's
02:45in between acting gigs.
02:47As implied by his biography on the website for the off-Broadway theater company Primary
02:51Stages, Owens has largely focused on taking to the stage since his Cosby days, performing
02:56in plays like Romeo and Juliet and David Marmette's Race.
03:00Owens has also tried his hand at directing, working on plays like King Lear, Much Ado About
03:04Nothing, and The Taming of the Shrew.
03:07Beyond his acting roles, he's also held down teaching jobs, molding the minds everywhere from
03:11Yale and Columbia to Bergen County Community College and Montclair High School.
03:16No matter what the former Cosby Show actor has been doing to make ends meet, it's great
03:19to see that he's remaining active on the stage and screen, and we look forward to seeing what
03:23projects he takes on next.
