00:00Large tornado in progress.
00:03Capable of catastrophic destruction.
00:06Severe thunderstorm warning.
00:08Leaving landscapes in total ruin.
00:11Totally mashed up. Everything's flattened.
00:14As global temperatures rise,
00:18the weather is spiraling out of control.
00:22Oh, shoot!
00:24With shocking up-close footage.
00:27We had 24-foot dumpsters rolling by.
00:30Oh, shoot! I'm losing it. My trail's going.
00:33From the front line of fear.
00:35This might be the last time I'm in my house.
00:38Cornangle!
00:40I got sucked out feet first.
00:43Felt myself hit the ground.
00:46Our island is in trouble.
00:49We meet the people who have stared death in the face.
00:52Oh, dear God.
00:54All I could hear was run, run, run.
00:57And miraculously survived.
00:59Look at that!
01:01The world's deadliest weather.
01:12Coming up.
01:14Merciless monsoons in northern Italy cause rivers to rupture.
01:19It's a disaster.
01:21Leading to ferocious flash flooding.
01:25And stranding residents on their roofs.
01:28It was scary.
01:30You know that if you fall, you die.
01:34A raging wildfire rips across Crater Creek in Canada.
01:38Trapping a terrified hiker in the forest.
01:42And prompting a dangerous rescue.
01:45Frankly, I'm not sure my heart can take it.
01:49In Iceland, earthquakes and eruptions turn bliss.
01:54To bedlam at the Blue Lagoon.
01:57They literally just evacuated the entire Blue Lagoon.
02:00The entire Blue Lagoon.
02:03And Hurricane Beryl brutally slams the state of Texas in the U.S.
02:10Bringing carnage and catastrophe.
02:14That wind was unbelievable.
02:26Emilia-Romagna is a region in northern Italy.
02:30Rich in historical sites.
02:33And known the world over for its exceptional wine and food.
02:36But on September 19th, 2024.
02:46Torrential rains caused devastating floods in the region.
02:49Leaving residents stranded.
02:55And emergency services and the army in a race against time to rescue them.
03:02At one point, this part of Italy saw a huge amount of rain just in a short space of time.
03:16And it has to go somewhere.
03:19Rivers breach their banks.
03:21Water flows to the lowest point, the floodplain.
03:24Which is normally the most populated area of a region.
03:28Causing huge amounts of flooding.
03:31But also landslides and mudslides.
03:34And they annihilated that particular area.
03:44Traversara is a small town near the east coast of Emilia-Romagna.
03:49On the edge of the Limoni River.
03:51It's home to Franco and Chiara.
03:54In the days before the flood, local authorities begin warning residents that Storm Boris is on its way.
04:07Bringing heavy rain.
04:09And that the nearby river Limoni could overflow.
04:26And the river starts to spill.
04:30Ecco.
04:31Era un po' di allerta.
04:32Stare attenti.
04:33Ecco.
04:34Tutto qui.
04:35Eventualmente spostarsi al piano di sopra delle case.
04:39Prima dell'allugione.
04:40La situazione è diventata critica.
04:41Il livello del film si era razzato.
04:42C'era agitazione.
04:43Overnight.
04:44The rain increases.
04:45And the river starts to spill over its banks.
04:46At three a.m.
04:47Chiara notices water seeping into the downstairs of their home.
05:24Cioè, io cominciavo a avere paura.
05:27The river continues to flood into the town and the areas around it.
05:32In the nearby fields, Sergio Bagnoli and his wife Stefania live above their farmhouse restaurant.
06:22On the edge of town, Mauro Matucci lives in a second floor apartment.
07:00After days of heavy rain, the overly saturated ground has suddenly given way.
07:07And a huge section of the river embankment collapses.
07:12E questo è il Bucanino.
07:15Turning the flood into a raging torrent as billions of gallons of water and mud crash through the town.
07:40Closer to the river, Franco and Chiara's house is swiftly engulfed by the flood.
08:30Retiree Bernard Cloutier in Penticton, a city in British Columbia, Canada.
08:36Famed for its wild natural beauty.
08:41I have this passion for adventure, being out there in the wilderness.
08:46Canada is a beautiful country, British Columbia is gorgeous.
08:50I can pack 14 days of autonomy on my back and I just go.
09:00But in August 2023, the mountain wilderness turns into a deadly inferno,
09:06as a raging wildfire causes a mass evacuation of the area,
09:11leaving Bernard trapped and alone, fearing for his life.
09:15When you look around the world, often mountain areas see the worst fire impacts.
09:22The elevation and the terrain can actually lead to enhanced fire conditions
09:26and rapidly spreading fires.
09:28Wildfires can be uncontrollable.
09:31They spread when we have strong winds fanning the flames.
09:35But also mountainous areas with differing terrain can also affect the spread of wildfires as well.
09:41July 27th, 2023.
09:46Bernard is heading out for his longest solo trek.
09:51A three-week hike around Cathedral Provincial Park.
09:56A stunning expanse of mountain peaks, woodlands and lakes.
10:03I drove down to the park that day.
10:06I was going to start at the trailhead, the Ewart Creek Trailhead.
10:17Walking on these ridges is absolutely stunning.
10:21What an awesome trek.
10:23It is spectacular.
10:29And then I noticed there was smoke over there.
10:32Okay, so there's a new fire.
10:35There's smoke coming up there.
10:38So that's about 30 kilometres away.
10:42So, for me, it was not threatening at all.
10:46Bernard carries on his trek up and down the ridges for several days.
10:51I'm almost at the top.
10:53I think I made it.
10:55He camps for two nights on the highest ridge before it's time to head back to his car.
11:00On the morning of August 14th, I woke up and strangely, there was smoke in the valleys looking east and north.
11:10It was worrisome because from that point on, I was going down towards my car and I would be travelling mostly through densely packed pine forest.
11:23On the way down, the south-westerly breeze came back up.
11:30That's when I noticed that there was smoke lingering just above a low-altitude crest.
11:37That looked like a cumulus cloud.
11:41Then that smoke started to move and get bigger and change colour and turn greyish and blackish.
11:48And then when that orange colour appeared at the base of the cloud, my mind just went there, Bernard, you're looking at fire.
11:56There's fire between here and your car.
12:01Unbeknownst to Bernard, on the other side of the mountain, dry lightning and strong winds have set the forest ablaze.
12:09Huge plumes of smoke are flooding the area.
12:13One of my contacts was the park ranger.
12:15He told me the park is under general evacuation.
12:19The road is blocked.
12:20There is debris.
12:21There is fire activity down there.
12:24And you can't go there.
12:25You have to shelter in place.
12:28We'll send you a helicopter at 7 a.m.
12:32And that's the worst possible nightmare.
12:35I was in a dense pine forest.
12:37I was running out of food.
12:39And so I felt like I was trapped.
12:41And it was terrifying.
12:44Overnight, residents continue to evacuate.
12:47And the fire keeps spreading.
12:50Now covering an area of 14,000 hectares.
12:56Bernard shelters in place until morning.
13:02So I'm waiting for an helicopter.
13:05And frankly, I'm not sure my heart can take it.
13:10I was going to be the last one out of the park.
13:13And that was a terrible, terrible feeling.
13:16I waited for the helicopter all night.
13:19And then it finally came in the morning.
13:23I think I hear a helicopter coming.
13:28Far in the distance.
13:30Aboard the Penticton Search and Rescue helicopter are Ron Burley and Norman Cole.
13:39So Penticton Search and Rescue received a call from the provincial government with some of the details as to Bernard's location.
13:47And then it flew south.
13:51Then it came back and then it left.
13:53And that was a huge disappointment.
13:56We tried to communicate with him that we did see him.
14:00But there was no landing area close by.
14:04We had to search for a place to land to be able to access Bernard.
14:10The team has no choice but to leave Bernard alone once again.
14:15I am 100% sure they saw me.
14:18We had eye contact, I suppose.
14:20And they flew away.
14:22That was a low point.
14:26And I was trapped in a place where I could not be rescued.
14:29And time was really running out.
14:32Iceland is located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates diverge.
14:53In 2024, Iceland experiences several earthquakes.
14:59Leading to a number of deadly volcanic eruptions.
15:02With fissures suddenly appearing across the country.
15:06Spewing out hot molten lava that races towards towns and tourist attractions with terrifying speed.
15:14Husband and wife Andrew and Ali Kenny from Florida in the US are on a nine-month cruise around the world.
15:27In August 2024, their ship docks in Iceland.
15:32We were so excited to get to Iceland because we rented a van and drove part of the Golden Circle.
15:39That was just amazing.
15:41We saw geysers, huge waterfalls.
15:43We just couldn't believe how absolutely stunning Iceland was.
15:48Living in Iceland and documenting the country's volcanic activity is photographer Jacob Vigerfors.
15:56Iceland is one of the most volcanically active places in the world.
16:02Though it's a pretty unique country from my perspective at least.
16:06The whole of Iceland is kind of being torn apart very, very slowly.
16:10We have large pockets of magma deep down under Earth.
16:16And when the pressure there gets too high, that's where we get these fissures.
16:25Fountains of lava shooting up, sometimes up to two, three hundred meters up in the air.
16:30It can definitely be dangerous.
16:32But then there's always the danger of lava going in unpredictable directions.
16:40We have eruptions that start with 20 minutes warning.
16:44It's a tricky thing to predict.
16:50Experts believe that some volcanic activity might be imminent.
16:54Putting a dampener on Andrew and Ali's plans to visit Iceland's famous Blue Lagoon.
17:00The cruise company had actually cancelled any excursions to the Blue Lagoon because it was a higher risk.
17:06But our friend group had decided, oh, they're just doing that out of an abundance of caution.
17:12That they just have to say that.
17:14So we should be totally fine to go.
17:18When we checked in, the man at the counter was like, oh, just so you're aware, there's a slight chance of a volcanic eruption.
17:27But if you hear the siren, don't panic.
17:29Just evacuate as quick as possible.
17:31The Blue Lagoon is just an amazing experience.
17:38We were finding warm spots and cool spots because the geothermal activity, there's actually different parts of the pool are warmer and cooler, which is awesome.
17:46Ali got a face mask.
17:48I was there to get a couple of beers.
17:50It was just stunning.
17:51And we're like, I can't, I can't believe we're here.
17:58And then all of a sudden the alarm starts.
18:00My stomach just drops.
18:03Is this really happening to us right now?
18:06And then they say over the loudspeaker, please evacuate the pool immediately.
18:11Volcanic activity detected.
18:17Instantly, it just made me sick.
18:19I was like, this is really happening.
18:21I have to get myself out of here and we need to get to the van.
18:30Back in Travissara in northern Italy, billions of gallons of water and mud are still flowing through the town.
18:45After heavy rainfall has caused the banks of the Lamoni River to collapse.
18:51The river is broken because it comes out and it makes me scared.
18:56Local residents, Chiara and Franco, are trapped in their home with the first floor completely submerged.
19:34Una distruzione incredibile, insomma.
19:36Cioè alberi che giravano, macchine.
19:40Dei rumori stranissimi, tipo scacchiolini molto forti.
20:01Just outside the town, farmhouse restaurant owners Sergio and Stefania are also trapped.
20:13The flood water rising rapidly inside their home.
20:28Do you believe me?
20:40Quindi l'unica cosa era ritirarsi i piani superiori.
20:59But help is on the way.
21:02Fire service and army helicopters are scrambled to the area.
21:06On board one of them is first lieutenant Gianluca Rudeli
21:11and Colonel Nicola Giganti.
21:33Inside, Sergio and Stefania hear the helicopter approaching.
21:46mi chiedevo come avessi potuto fare a raggiungerlo.
21:51A raggiungerlo.
21:52A raggiungerlo.
21:53In Canada, wildfires continuano a rinforzare
22:07across Cathedral Provincial Park.
22:09park the helicopter search and rescue team are forced to abandon trapped hiker bernard in search
22:18of a suitable place to land our landing area was above the tree line in an open meadow area
22:25four kilometers north of bernard's position and we returned to bernard and told him of our plan
22:34i heard helicopter roared noise in the distance and after a while it was on me
22:43the most effective way i was able to come up with was to actually write a note to tell him which
22:49direction to go and find a way of getting it delivered to him the door of the helicopter
22:54opened and and it dropped a note on me and that note said to head back towards my car
23:02they would meet me up on their way the note instructs bernard to walk north directly into
23:09the path of the fire the mental challenge just to put his faith in our instructions
23:17is quite remarkable norm and i were dropped off and we started heading south towards bernard
23:26there's this long stretch of trail ahead of me and i see two little orange dots in the distance
23:32we intercepted bernard heading north towards us i don't think we have ever met anybody who was
23:40as happy to be found as bernard in that instant i i got a big smile on my face it was a wonderful moment
23:48but the trio are not out of the woods yet first they must trek back through woodland that has already
23:56been burnt every moment counted at that point because the fire was close by there was a lot of smoke
24:04we could see open flames on the ridge line above the helicopter it was right above where it was an
24:12inferno miraculously the team make it back to the helicopter and out of the park we were flying
24:21close to the trees and the visibility was at times and was absolutely nil there was nothing to see it
24:28was just smoke it was really nerve-wracking
24:32the fires which burned for several weeks scorched more than 46 000 hectares of land
24:44and the damage to cathedral provincial park was so extensive that officials were forced to close it
24:51and it's yet to be reopened
24:53the devastation in the park is just total there's no way i could have survived this the trees are all
25:05burned down only pickets are left no branches attached to them in search and rescue we get to see mother
25:13nature in all its glory and all its fury wildfire is awe-inspiring
25:22as to the destruction that can do in a very short period of time
25:26i am extremely grateful for the search and rescue people they took a lot of risks
25:32to come and save my life and i say thank you pentington search and rescue
25:46it's a very short period of time
25:49june 2024 hurricane beryl is forming over the atlantic ocean
25:56reaching category 5 status earlier than any other atlantic hurricane on record
26:03a deadly and destructive tropical cyclone
26:06beryl is whipping up winds of up to 270 kilometers per hour and is heading straight for texas
26:14hurricane beryl caused catastrophic damage throughout much of the caribbean
26:20tracking through the caribbean and eventually hit the yucatan peninsula of mexico weakened below
26:25hurricane status but it re-intensified into a hurricane before striking texas in early july of 2024
26:35keen to track hurricane beryl's progress with his friend joe
26:39is storm chaser mike boylan from florida hurricane beryl was an unusual storm for early season while
26:46we were tracking it you know watching radar and we're watching the storm you know get stronger
26:51on on its approach to land i wanted to chase beryl because i knew it was going to be powerful
26:59you know i knew it was a devastating storm
27:02he reached out and asked me if i would uh join him and i'd uh i'd been with him before on other
27:07storms but never in a hurricane so i would look forward to the opportunity there's a little bit
27:11i want to say exciting going into it a little unnerving
27:14though storm chasing can be a deadly pursuit joe agrees to accompany mike and the pair fly to houston
27:24then drive south towards sergeant a small town on the gulf coast we decided to drive towards uh sergeant
27:32beach which was still north of the eye but where the heaviest winds were and that's where
27:38we knew there was going to be the biggest impacts to get to sergeant beach the pair must cross sergeant's
27:45famous 721 meter long corkscrew bridge which crosses the gulf intercoastal waterway at a height of 23
27:54meters conditions were definitely getting worse and worse as we travel on seeing the wind picking up and
28:02the gusts uh knowing that there was a lot more to come and as we traveled down some of those roads
28:07the windshield wipers were barely keeping up it's nighttime when mike and joe approach the corkscrew
28:14bridge being at night of course it made it difficult because we we've never been there before and the
28:20hurricane is getting closer so we've made the turn to go on the bridge and as we started driving we
28:28started feeling the truck shake in that wind was unbelievable this seems like a heck of a lot more
28:36than 80 80 miles an hour trust me uh i'm gonna attempt to open the door here and show you what i'm talking
28:41about this is now i'm gonna try to go outside i got out of the vehicle and uh almost the door almost
28:52slammed behind me it was dangerous and uh yeah the rain was sideways i i remember trying to record but
28:59it was impossible being outside in a hurricane is unsafe and not recommended practice even mike and
29:09joe must admit defeat we both looked at each other and we're like this is not a good idea
29:14so we uh you know backed up and ended up on the base of the bridge and try to figure out what our next
29:22move was the pair head down to the base of the bridge but as the hurricane crosses the gulf of mexico
29:33it begins pushing a massive storm surge inland
29:36huge amounts of seawater start flooding the houses and roads at the bottom of the bridge
29:46it was kind of surreal you knew the storm was coming and surf was starting to pick up and there
29:50were some houses there that were getting uh surge so you could definitely feel the intensity you know
29:55was increasing when we see a large powerful hurricane out over open water we need to take
30:02preparation it's going to be a massive coastal flood event the storm surge heights this raging water
30:08that flows inland and it's the most deadly destructive hazard on the planet the wind is now too strong
30:15to travel back over the bridge so mike and joe are forced to spend the night in their car terrified of
30:23being swept away by the surge the storm seemed like it was forever you know it was all night long
30:30i mean obviously we didn't get any sleep
30:36by morning the wind has died down enough for mike and joe to drive over the bridge again
30:42from the top the true horror of the storm surge is clear to see
30:50we just started looking around and we're like oh my god there's still water coming in and
30:54houses underwater and that was probably the scariest feeling for me when the sun came up and we realized
31:00the road we came in on and the property alongside of the road was no longer there it looked like a sea
31:05of water the strength of the surge uh really surprised me that's what it describes surge when
31:12you're watching it is it's angry it's angry water and the surge is still rising eventually it swamps the
31:20bottom of the bridge cutting off access entirely and trapping mike and joe 23 meters in the air
31:29i'm thinking you know we're going to be here for a while and then the panic kind of set in because
31:33we had no food how long we're going to be there and you know what's what's going to happen next
31:39that road that we took out there was all under water of miles and miles and miles at that point i wasn't
31:45sure how we were going to get off that bridge mike and joe are trapped on the bridge for a total of
31:5110 hours before the storm surge finally recedes enough for them to make their way down but they're
31:58stunned by the devastation left in the hurricane's wake nothing but damage trees huge trees trying to
32:09find a hotel there was no power no gas stations with power 11 people tragically lost their lives
32:17by hurricane barrel in the state of texas alone and the storm is said to have caused up to 32 billion
32:24dollars worth of damage i felt very lucky and stupid almost it was a valuable lesson for me to see that
32:34uh storm surge is serious and it comes fast you make that last second decision it's too late
32:42definitely changed my message you know for future hurricanes that's for sure
32:54extreme winds are a wild whirling force in their own right capable of causing chaos carnage and
33:07catastrophic destruction
33:12november 2023 intense winds whip the way through a shopping mall in sao paulo brazil
33:20a mother and child scramble into a car seeking shelter from the storm
33:29just seconds later a section of the ceiling comes crashing down right where they were
33:37it's a near miss for the mother and daughter who managed to dodge disaster just in time
33:42these incredible gusts show no mercy to anything stood in their way
33:53and there is certainly no hiding from the intense power of wind as these road users found in july 2024
34:01when severe thunderstorms lashed the city of des moines in iowa
34:05as the drivers go about their business one of them stops at a red light but there's no stopping a sudden
34:13and ferocious outburst of wind
34:18as branches are blown across the road battering cars and smashing street lights
34:23the driver continues on dodging the debris left in the storm's wake
34:33as a result of mere seconds of extreme wind
34:37back in iceland andrew and ali's relaxing day at the blue lagoon has been cut short as sirens sound
34:54signaling that a volcanic eruption is imminent the volcano fire alarm's going off i'm waiting for ali and
35:00the rest of our crew a lot of people were just running out the door and my heart rate was just
35:04through the roof this is wild i cannot believe it you're excited and you're scared and you don't
35:09really know exactly what to do they legit just evacuated the entire blue lagoon we gotta go this is
35:14nuts as the couple and their friends evacuate the lagoon and head back to their vehicle journalist and
35:23videographer jacob vigafors gets word of the impending eruption we knew that the blue lagoon had been
35:29evacuated it's in the danger zone so they have to take this precaution there's an area between this
35:37fissure started filling up and if that area would have filled up completely it has more or less an open
35:44path towards blue lagoon fortunately icelandic officials had already begun the process of building
35:53lava-proof protective barriers in key areas of the country the blue lagoon is one of them
36:00they know that they can't stop the lava completely from going in the direction that it's going
36:05but you can kind of nudge it in the right direction as a result the lava flow from the august eruption
36:12didn't reach the blue lagoon andrew ali and the rest of their group were able to escape to safety
36:19holy cow it's right there no that's so scary we piled in the van and tried to just get out of there as
36:32soon as possible oh my god can you guys believe that the farther we drove the more the eruption grew
36:42as we're kind of snaking down the coastline watch it grow and grow and grow you can see where the
36:51earth just opened and we could see lava just shooting out everybody just took photos and
36:59we're like this is an amazing experience to witness i think andrew is happy to be back on the ship
37:12oh we were so relieved once we could see the ship i've never been so happy to see this everything
37:20that was very scary but we're all safe we made it we're safe seeing what mother nature can do we
37:28have totally a whole new respect we really have no control like you realize how small and how
37:34powerless you are in the face of that back in northern italy days of continual torrential rain
37:55has fallen across the region of emilia romagna causing the lamoni river to burst its banks
38:02flooding the town of traversara and the fields around it leaving residents stranded
38:12helicopter teams from the fire service and the army are in a race against time to save them
38:18first lieutenant gianluco rodelli and colonel nicola giganti are in the skies above sergio and
38:25stefania's farmhouse restaurant on the outskirts of traversara
38:31our procedure is to put us in hovering so we're closed in the air so we're closed in the air so we can
38:37then be able to collapse the operator that will reach physically the people to save us
38:42and clearly in all this there are difficulties because in the meteorological conditions
38:50low visibility wind and rain and rain
38:55weathering and rain
38:59when the helicopter arrived arrived he carried out a fighter
39:03a military military on the roof
39:07fortunately we had a scale in the case we had an open the bottle
39:14Once I've set up everything, I opened the roof to the roof and reached the first floor.
39:22The guys of the army made us go up on the roof
39:28and put us on the roof of the house so that we didn't fly.
39:36Okay, good, Stefania.
39:39When they passed over the roof, I was agitated, so that with my husband, I said I wouldn't go up.
39:47To understand what they were saying, because they made a noise, it seemed like a tornado.
40:00Rescue helicopters are also heading into the town where the flood water is sweeping away buildings.
40:08When I saw the house next to us, it was scary.
40:16Chiara, Franco and their two children are clinging onto their rooftop as the water rushes around them.
40:24And so we were all on the roof and looked at us and said things.
40:33Yes, we are on the roof, we wait for the helicopter to take us.
40:38When the helicopter gets close to the rescue, it becomes difficult because you're afraid of falling.
40:48And below there is water that comes with all the strength from the river against the house.
40:53You know that if you fall, you die.
40:55You die.
40:58In the nearby countryside, Lieutenant Gianluca Rodelli prepares Stefania for rescue.
41:04A turn, prima Stefania, abbiamo imbragato e poi messa in sicurezza sul tetto.
41:10Allora, questi ragazzi sono stati dei veri professionisti.
41:18Ci hanno messo subito a nostro agio.
41:21Vedevo praticamente tutt'acqua.
41:26Insomma, galleggiava tutto.
41:45perché mi sentivo impotente a tutto.
42:12In Traversara, Chiara and her two daughters are also on board the helicopter.
42:39No.
42:46Later that day, the flood water starts to recede.
42:49On the edge of town, resident Mauro Matucci surveys the damage.
43:11A few days later, Franco and Chiara return to their home.
44:55La addenda è in pazza.
45:01The weather, the pulse of the earth, and an uncontrollable force, as global temperatures
45:16rise, the weather is getting more extreme, and even more catastrophic, it's the most
45:29active I've ever seen it, with devastating consequence, you better go, it's coming, proving
45:37once again, that we are no match for the world's deadliest weather, oh dear god.
45:59The weather, the pulse of the earth, and an uncontrollable force, as global temperatures
