00:009-1-1 what is the address of the emergency i don't know i'm just at the corner it's like
00:24sheridan and 20th we're in the parking lot right behind the dunkin donuts okay what it's right by
00:28that like the bar in northern lights or sensory what's going on there some guy just got shot
00:35and he's on the ground he's like face down and they took off in a silver two-door pontiac
00:41he's in the parking lot like face out we're standing right next to him he's still conscious
00:46and he's still breathing where did he get shot at where did he get shot at i don't know he's
00:50face down he's not talking
01:10on april 5th 2018 just after 8 pm we responded to a report of a shooting at that point we didn't know
01:17if the victim was alive or dead but we knew as officers that this was a very bad situation
01:23when we got to the scene we activated their body cameras all right
01:27hey lincoln one the incoming units need to get this one i thought they were actually pulled out
01:33so they can get medical in here yeah that's probably a good idea medical's gonna get into
01:38i'm gonna drive ems was very quick to arrive they started working on the victim who had one single
01:43gunshot wound to his chest yeah they're doing cpr on a guy like that one number who are these folks
01:50that are right here um this guy here's got a car he wants to get out but yeah no we're shutting the
01:56place down at that point in time we weren't sure if he was alive or dead or what the situation was
02:02so during all this commotion the victim was pronounced dead on scene
02:14in the parking lot near the victim a wallet had been located and opening it a colorado id was found
02:21to an andrew jenisek this is a very crazy circumstance for me because i went to high school with andrew
02:32during that time he played football and i was a manager of the football team so i interacted with
02:37andrew pretty frequently i was in shock andrew he was the sweetest kid actually was the first boy in our
02:53family on my side and my mother just adored him he was a chunky little baby i kept saying how can three
03:04folds of fat in your legs be so darn cute but andrew was always a big kid andrew was a very curious
03:12little boy seeked a lot of pleasure in music i think that was his biggest passion
03:27um yeah it was april 6 when i found out i got up that morning and i get a call from the edgewater pd and
03:42they said i'd like to come over to your house and talk to you and i'm thinking what the hell happened
03:48they get there it's brandon chalice and a victim's advocate they come into my house
03:56and we're all sitting at my kitchen table and he said there's just no way to tell you but andrew's dead
04:11all i could do was cry it just didn't seem like it was real it just felt like my
04:19were all just crumbled at that time
04:30so i was working at the time and i got a call from one of our buddies on the football team
04:35and i could tell immediately something was wrong i could hear it in his throat and he said andrew was
04:41murdered yesterday and we just broke into tears i mean what do you say or do it was just shock
04:48there's no words for what that moment feels like
04:50like
05:04holding the light and measure yeah i got you once everything had kind of calmed down we turned
05:11our attention to the evidence some of the evidence that i found on scene was a single
05:16spent 9mm shell casing nearby, Andrew's wallet
05:20that had cash inside of it.
05:23I also located a cell phone with a sticky note on the back
05:27with an order for barbecue.
05:31As we were scanning the parking lot looking
05:33for additional evidence, we didn't locate any firearms.
05:36I also located Andrew's car in the parking lot,
05:40and we found no weapons inside of Andrew's car.
05:42When you see the wallet is still underground
05:46and now that the money's missing, motive becomes unclear.
05:50It makes you think, was this a target attack?
05:52Did the suspect know the victim?
05:54We knew that we were going to have to dig deep
05:56to solve this mystery.
06:01As we were combing the scene, we noticed
06:03that there was a camera on the side of a nearby barbecue
06:06restaurant, which matched up with the sticky note
06:09that I found on Andrew's phone right next to the scene.
06:12Now we're asking ourselves, could that camera
06:15have caught the shooting, the shooter, or very least
06:18the vehicle that left the scene?
06:20So officers went to the restaurant,
06:22started knocking on the front door, tried the door.
06:25Nobody was answering.
06:26They tried going around the back,
06:30then continued knocking on the door.
06:31Finally, somebody kind of peeked through,
06:34noticed it was uniformed law enforcement officers
06:36trying to get in and answer the door for us.
06:39As you can tell, we had an incident happen
06:41out here in the parking lot.
06:43Let me see if our camera's going to be.
06:45Actually, yeah, if you guys have camera footage,
06:47that would be awesome.
06:48They were able to pull up the video footage
06:50for us almost immediately, which was a miracle.
06:52Saw where the dude was on the ground back there
06:54when you pulled her up.
06:55OK.
06:57So you can catch the corner of it right here,
06:59it looks like.
06:59OK.
07:00So you might be able to see something.
07:02OK.
07:02Video footage, it was pretty grainy.
07:04We could see what happened, but not great.
07:08We were able to look at the timestamp,
07:10which was directly in the vicinity of the 911 call.
07:13It was hard to see what type of vehicle it was.
07:16So the surveillance had to be sent off
07:18to forensics for analysis or further investigation
07:21to be able to identify the vehicle
07:24and persons inside the vehicle.
07:26We appreciate your help, man.
07:27That's awesome.
07:28Any little thing could actually help the movie.
07:32Once we exited the restaurant,
07:33we turned our attention to the two 911 callers.
07:35They were still unseen in the barbecue parking lot.
07:38Right now, they're the closest thing we have
07:41to the truth behind what happened to Andrew.
07:42We didn't know what kind of connection
07:44they had with the case.
07:45A lot of times when we interview witnesses,
07:47you want everything to be their own raw emotions,
07:50raw feelings, raw memories and testimony
07:54without being guided or coerced.
07:56So we made the decision to take the 911 callers
07:58to the station for an interview.
08:03All righty, as I told you before,
08:16Corporal Nathan Rivers has been investigating
08:18the shooting at the Duncan Ellis parking lot.
08:21Could you state your full name?
08:23Alexis Jordan Ellis.
08:25Okay, okay.
08:26And you're the one that called 911, right?
08:28Yes.
08:28Okay, so let's start with the, just take me through.
08:33Take me through.
08:34I'm going to drop some notes down.
08:35I'm going to stop you, but I'm trying to get you through.
08:38Okay.
08:39We pulled up, we parked in the back parking lot.
08:41My friend got out to go into the dispensary,
08:43sitting on my phone, playing on Facebook,
08:48heard the shot, thought it was a firework for a second.
08:50Until I looked up and saw the victim face down on the floor.
08:55And there was a silver Pontiac in front of the victim.
09:01And the shooter was in front of the car,
09:03still kind of standing by the victim's body
09:06with the gun pointed at him.
09:07And then got back into the Pontiac on the passenger side.
09:11So from the information we got from Alexis,
09:13this incident seemed really quick, really sudden.
09:16And then she dropped this bombshell on us.
09:18Are you familiar with guns?
09:20That's what I'm on probation for.
09:22How's that?
09:24I was dating and died for three weeks.
09:26He asked for a ride and shot and killed somebody
09:29at the King Soopers.
09:30So when somebody discloses that they're on probation
09:33because they were a witness to another murderer,
09:36it definitely raises a lot of suspicion
09:38and raises a lot of questions.
09:39So why are you here?
09:40I think we're right back with that.
09:42What type of situations do you put yourself into?
09:45Was she involved in the murder in some way, shape, or form?
09:48This was a significant lead that could potentially
09:50help us find out what happened to Andrew.
10:01As we were talking to this 911 caller, Alexis,
10:04obviously we got this information that she was on probation
10:07and that she had been a witness in this other murder.
10:09So we had to start treading lightly and making sure
10:11that we were paying extra attention to what was going on.
10:15So you've heard a game go off?
10:16Yeah, his wife, he would run me alone, too.
10:19Got some tremendous luck?
10:20Yeah.
10:21Yeah, and I actually have his trial next week
10:23to go testify against, and I go downtown tomorrow
10:26to get prepped, so.
10:27Cheap charge?
10:28Yeah.
10:30Well, it makes it seem like either really bad luck
10:33or really suspicious that this person's at the wrong place
10:36at the wrong time yet again.
10:38So then we turned our attention to our second 911 caller.
10:41When we're interviewing two people who are the same incident
10:44at the same time, we're hoping to get pretty much
10:46the same story and hopefully some additional information
10:50from each witness.
10:53But we're hoping that the stories primarily line up.
10:56So I walked up to the dispensary, was in there for maybe five minutes,
11:00left her in the car because she doesn't have her ID and she can't.
11:03Alexis.
11:05I came back out, looked at her, and I saw this dude on the ground.
11:09I was talking 911, and then she was standing there.
11:11We didn't start CPR immediately.
11:14Both of the 911 caller stories actually were very consistent
11:17with each other, and they provided a lot of the same information.
11:21When we were able to check and see if they had any past connections
11:25to Andrew, we found out they had none, neither one of them.
11:28So we took them off of our suspect list.
11:31Okay, ma'am, come over.
11:33But one thing was for certain,
11:37somebody pulled the trigger, and that person was still out there.
11:44The moment I realized what had happened,
11:47the only thing running through my mind was that I needed to try and help.
11:50When I tried to speak to him, the only thing he said was,
11:53please help me.
11:55When I found out Andrew didn't make it, it hurt my heart.
11:59I worked really hard to try and get him back.
12:02It definitely stung.
12:07The thing that's amazing about this young woman,
12:09once the car sped away, she ran to him,
12:15and she asked him if he was okay.
12:17And he said, no, can you help me?
12:21And she said, I...
12:23She said she held him, and he died in her arms.
12:32I told her that the only salvation I have
12:35is knowing that when he left this world,
12:39those monsters weren't the last thing that he saw,
12:43that he saw hurt.
12:56Shortly after we were conducting our interviews,
12:59a call from a missing person comes in,
13:01and it turned out to be Andrew's girlfriend, Jessica.
13:04When you get a call like that,
13:05one of the things you want to do is you want to drop everything.
13:07Go interview that caller and find out what's going on.
13:13When we got to the apartment, Jessica was a little concerned
13:17as to why so many officers had shown up.
13:19I asked her some brief questions about what Andrew had done,
13:23where he had gone, what he was doing.
13:26So he was just going out to pick up dinner
13:29and didn't come back.
13:31He didn't say he was going anywhere else.
13:33Usually he informs me if he's going to do some other errands
13:37on top of something like this.
13:39Okay.
13:40So as I'm initially speaking with her,
13:42I don't want to give her too much information
13:43about what happened to Andrew
13:45because I'm not sure if she has anything to do with this.
13:48And I'm hopeful she doesn't, but you never know.
13:51He's probably got like 15 missed calls from me.
13:54And then I called him about two or three o'clock this morning
13:58and his phone was just dead.
14:00When's the first time you tried to call him after 8.30?
14:02I think I probably tried to call him around 9.30 and 10.
14:06So after having a brief interview with Jessica,
14:09coming to the determination that Jessica
14:11probably didn't have any involvement in this,
14:15I sat her down and I had to tell her
14:18that Andrew wasn't missing, that Andrew had been shot
14:22and that he was killed.
14:23Oh, my God.
14:25Yeah, yeah.
14:28And I know it's very difficult for you.
14:30And I know us answering all these questions
14:32that were kind of barraging you,
14:33that this is kind of difficult.
14:35One of the most difficult things a police officer can do
14:38or be a part of is letting somebody know
14:40their loved one has passed away or had been killed.
14:43Just seeing the reaction to people being delivered,
14:47that news takes a toll on everybody on scene.
14:51I'm just not expecting to hear that he's been shot
14:54and killed in a parking lot down the street from my apartment.
14:58I know.
14:59But there was no easy way for me to tell you, obviously.
15:06She was devastated.
15:06She was sad.
15:07She was crying.
15:08She was confused.
15:11And I think she was hurt.
15:13And you're sure it's him?
15:15I, we're, so we had his identification,
15:18everything on the scene, and his work ID.
15:21And as we were trying to piece together
15:22Andrew's final minutes,
15:24we asked Jessica some very pointed questions.
15:27Does he carry a gun?
15:28And so, yes.
15:29Sky, a CC-1, 9 millimeter.
15:35What color is it?
15:36It's, uh, silver and black, yeah.
15:40Where do you keep that gun?
15:42I keep it in its case in our closet.
15:45The SCCY pistol is a small, compact 9 millimeter.
15:499 millimeter's the same caliber that we found on scene.
15:53We asked her if anything was missing,
15:54and that's when she tells us one of the guns it was.
15:58So, to me, at this point, I'm wondering,
16:00well, maybe in that struggle was Andrew's firearm taken from him
16:04and maybe used against him.
16:06Is there any, anywhere else that firearm would be?
16:09That's the only place I can think of, possibly,
16:12because I don't know if he put that in his car or not.
16:17Because he always kept everything in here.
16:19During the initial investigation of the crime scene,
16:21officers did search Andrew's vehicle,
16:25and they did not locate the gun inside the vehicle.
16:28If the gun wasn't in the apartment,
16:30and it wasn't in the car, where was it?
16:31You guys let anybody else borrow your firearms
16:33or anything like that?
16:34No.
16:35No?
16:35We don't even tell anyone about him.
16:37The only people that know about him are our parents.
16:40We knew we weren't dealing with just a homicide,
16:42but that family's worst nightmare.
16:48I needed to contact his mother, Julie Genisek.
16:52I called Julie.
16:53I told her that I needed to have a conversation with her,
16:55and it was something we had to do in person.
16:58When I got to Julie's house, I was
17:00able to ask Julie some questions.
17:02One of those questions I asked Julie
17:04was if her son had any enemies.
17:07She indicated to me that he had one that she knew of,
17:12and it was Jessica's brother.
17:14Her brother had gotten out of jail and threatened Andrew.
17:19At the time, we realized that it was something critical.
17:22I mean, somebody coming out of prison.
17:25I, I, yeah, I don't take it lightly.
17:37With this new information about Jessica, Andrew's girlfriend,
17:40that about a year prior, Jessica's brother threatened Andrew.
17:45And with Andrew's gun being missing and unaccounted for,
17:48now I'm wondering, why didn't Jessica tell us this?
17:51And is this a credible or serious threat?
17:54It was imperative for us to bring in Jessica once more
17:58for a question.
17:59You doing okay?
18:01Yeah.
18:03I wanted to keep Jessica at ease.
18:04I didn't want her to feel attacked.
18:06I wanted to know why she hadn't told us
18:08about this incident involving her brother and Andrew.
18:10Your brother had, had threatened Andrew.
18:14Yeah, he didn't threaten him directly.
18:18It was indirectly to me.
18:21Can you elaborate on that for me?
18:23I had some concerns.
18:25Obviously, if somebody's threatening to kill your loved one,
18:30especially if that person's a family member,
18:32and now there's a potential that a firearm is missing
18:34from your house, that would be information
18:36that you might want to share with law enforcement.
18:39My brother and I were having a fight,
18:41and that's when he said his comment.
18:46And it really unnerved me, so I told Andrew.
18:53And then Andrew wanted to take it to the police,
18:55and the police said your best option would be just
18:57to move away from the situation, so we did.
19:00There was a part of me that was thinking
19:01she might be trying to protect her brother at this point,
19:04but I didn't know.
19:05It was a mystery.
19:06He just said that he would take him out
19:10with his friend or whatever.
19:13What do you think he meant by that?
19:17I mean, well, the first thought to my head is to kill him.
19:21So this information, I think it kind of broadened
19:24our scope a little bit, and now we just
19:25had more information to follow up on.
19:28Andrew hasn't seen my brother in a year or talked to him
19:31or anything, and Andrew has not come up in a conversation
19:35between my brother and I.
19:37So, um...
19:39Retrospect kind of seems a little important, though.
19:42With the threats from Joseph to Andrew,
19:45and the fact that a gun was missing,
19:47I thought, this is pretty serious.
19:49Uh, we need to find Joseph.
19:51We divided our workload, and we provided this lead
19:59to CBI to follow up on.
20:02They located Joseph, picked him up,
20:05brought him in for an interview,
20:07and CBI conducted the interview with Joseph.
20:10Joseph was extremely cooperative.
20:12He fully admitted that, yeah, he did have that confrontation,
20:17and that he did threaten Andrew.
20:19He stated he would never actually follow up on that threat,
20:22and Joseph was able to provide an alibi
20:24that he was actually out of the state
20:26during the time of this incident.
20:28It's a little frustrating.
20:29Once you get rid of a lead, and you cross off your board,
20:31and you've got to refocus your attention,
20:33you just kind of reprioritize.
20:41To me, the whole thing was sad.
20:42I felt for Andrew.
20:44He definitely was quirky.
20:46He had this grin he would get, especially when he was being
20:48sarcastic, that he would give.
20:51But one of the things about Andrew,
20:53and sometimes it's uncomfortable to talk about,
20:55is he was bullied a lot.
20:57But I never once saw Andrew treat them poorly
21:00or be negative towards them.
21:01He still treated everyone with kindness and respect.
21:05After he passed, obviously had a lot of questions.
21:07Why him?
21:08We didn't get a ton of details initially,
21:11and we lost a loved one.
21:13We couldn't believe it.
21:21After exhausting a lot of our leads,
21:22we finally got the security footage back from forensics
21:25from the scene at the barbecue restaurant.
21:28We were hoping that they could clean up the video enough
21:30for us to see any additional details
21:32in what was going on between Andrew and this other party.
21:35So in the video footage, you can see it
21:37as clear as we're going to get it.
21:39You can see Andrew start walking towards the restaurant.
21:43And you can see headlights approach from one direction.
21:46Andrew gets confronted by another party.
21:50There's a brief altercation.
21:53You see a flash, a gunshot goes off.
21:56Andrew falls to the ground.
21:58Party runs into the vehicle.
22:01And a vehicle takes off, speeds past Andrew.
22:07Seeing that footage was pretty upsetting to me
22:09that somebody would do something like this,
22:11especially because it was to Andrew, my friend.
22:14Seeing that really motivated me to do the best work I could
22:18to try to help Andrew get justice along with his mom, Julie.
22:23From watching that video footage,
22:24we couldn't tell if the shooter was a male, female.
22:27We couldn't tell ethnicity.
22:29We couldn't tell how many people were in the car.
22:31It's a little frustrating.
22:33With further review of the footage,
22:34the investigation had a huge breakthrough
22:36because we could also see that it was not a silver Pontiac
22:39that was used.
22:40Like, the 911 caller reported
22:42it was actually a silver Mitsubishi Eclipse,
22:45and we were able to get a partial plate of that Eclipse.
22:48When we determined we had a partial plate for this vehicle
22:52and that we knew that it was a Mitsubishi Eclipse,
22:54we started running it.
22:56We managed to come back with two hits
22:59for a Mitsubishi Eclipse similar color
23:03with that partial license plate.
23:04One of them belonged to a run-a-car,
23:07and it hadn't been registered in a year or two.
23:11The other one came back,
23:13currently registered to an Alicia Valdez.
23:16Looking into her background,
23:17she had a pretty long rap sheet,
23:19and at the time, she had a warrant out for her arrest
23:22from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office for a burglary.
23:26Based on that information,
23:27we knew we needed to talk to her
23:29and see how she was involved in Andrew's death.
23:32As we're conducting our investigation,
23:33obviously, this is a big investigation for a small city,
23:37so we're still relying on other agencies
23:40for our help with the investigation.
23:42We put an attempt to locate on the vehicle.
23:48Two days later, we learned that Denver
23:51had pulled over that vehicle for an improper left turn.
23:56That was a huge break for us.
24:01Alicia, I'm gonna have you step out for a second.
24:03Um...
24:05Don't grab anything with you, okay?
24:07Just step on out for me.
24:08Okay.
24:10Go ahead and put this...
24:11Can I ask why?
24:11I'll tell you in a sec, okay?
24:13Oh, yes.
24:14All right, go ahead and put your cigarette down.
24:16Okay, sorry.
24:16You're okay.
24:18All right.
24:19Put your hands behind your back.
24:20Get a warrant, okay?
24:21Why?
24:22Why do you have a warrant?
24:23You probably know that better than I do,
24:24but we're gonna do some research
24:25and tell you exactly what it is.
24:26As a detective, when you tell somebody
24:29that they have a warrant for their arrest
24:30and they try to play dump,
24:32it's kind of aggravating,
24:34but it's also kind of entertaining
24:36because you're the one that committed a crime
24:38that has the warrant for your arrest,
24:40so why are you trying to pretend that you don't?
24:43Yeah, they put out a felony warrant out for you.
24:45A felony warrant?
24:45Yeah.
24:47Officers were able to place her into custody
24:49without further incidents,
24:50and our focus then turned to the other individuals
24:53that were in the vehicle.
24:54Stand up, man.
24:56Stand up.
24:58Try to recognize your back.
24:59What's going on?
25:03As we were sitting there trying to find out
25:04as much information as we could
25:06from everybody else that was on scene,
25:09it was immediately discovered then
25:11that there was a 9mm pistol
25:14on the front passenger seat
25:16pointing towards the officer in plain view.
25:19It's the same caliber that was used
25:20in the murder of Andrew Jenisek.
25:23You're not gonna tell me there's a gun
25:24in the seat next to you?
25:27You're not gonna tell me that you're gonna try
25:28to leave a gun on the seat when you left?
25:32That'd be nice to know, wouldn't it?
25:33Oh, and a pocket full of bullets.
25:35How about this?
25:37I'm about to get out of the car.
25:37Officer, I have a gun on me.
25:39I have a gun on you.
25:39I have a gun on me.
25:40Right?
25:43You ever been convicted of a felony before?
25:49Okay.
25:50All right.
25:51From my experience,
25:52whenever somebody is involved
25:54in a pretty serious crime,
25:56like Andrew's homicide,
25:57the first thing that people think about
25:59is what they need to do with the item used
26:02in the killing
26:03and where they're gonna hide it or destroy it.
26:05There was a thought that maybe this is
26:07Andrew's missing gun
26:08or, you know, at the very least,
26:10that maybe this is the gun responsible
26:11for the murder of Andrew Jenisek.
26:14Did you let him know that this is in the car?
26:17What is it?
26:17Uh, SCCY 9 mil?
26:21It was at that point in time
26:23that we realized that this was a lot more serious
26:25than just a traffic stop
26:27for an improper left turn,
26:29and we realized that we might be looking at the crew
26:31responsible for Andrew Jenisek's murder.
26:45We realized that the puzzle pieces
26:47were starting to fall into place,
26:48and we might be one step closer
26:50to getting justice for Andrew and his family.
26:54The suspects were taken back to the police department
26:57for interviews.
26:59We separated all of them
27:05so we could get their version of the events
27:07and their story,
27:08and they wouldn't be able to dilute it
27:10with each other's information.
27:12The first person we interview is Caleb Vigil,
27:15the guy who had the gun in the car.
27:16All right, Caleb, the last part of the form reads,
27:19if you want to talk to me about what happened,
27:21your answer is yes.
27:22If you don't want to talk to me,
27:24you should say no.
27:31Okay, and our interview is concluded at 6.51 p.m.
27:37When Caleb lawyered up,
27:40obviously all questioning ceased against him.
27:42It's frustrating because now he's a dead end
27:44in the investigation,
27:45but we did have other people to interview
27:48and investigate at that point in time.
27:49We arrested Caleb for being a felon in possession
27:54of a weapon by a previous offender.
27:56Then we turned our attention
27:57to the person driving the car, Alicia Valdez.
28:01At first, with that interview,
28:03we didn't want to go in too hard
28:04and kind of scare her off.
28:06What kind of car is it?
28:082006 Mitsubishi Eclipse.
28:15Okay.
28:17So, who else uses your car?
28:27We were hoping to get some information
28:29about where her vehicle had been the night
28:31that Andrew was killed, where she had been,
28:34and if she knew where her vehicle had been that evening.
28:39Your car was at the scene of a murder.
28:42Someone got out of your car, shot someone, and killed him.
28:48Got back into your car, and drove away.
28:50You just told me that you were driving your car all week.
28:53You were there when it happened.
28:57Right?
28:58You need to tell me the truth.
29:01Saying how she had continued to stick to her story,
29:05even though we knew she was lying,
29:07just motivated me and everybody to prove
29:09that she had involvement in what happened to Andrew.
29:12I honestly, I don't recall.
29:16You don't recall?
29:17I don't.
29:19Since Caleb was found with the firearm
29:21and with a pocket full of ammunition,
29:24we were working under the impression
29:25that Caleb was probably our shooter,
29:28and I believed that she had information
29:30that could tie the whole case together.
29:34Okay, look.
29:36We have it on video.
29:37I know that the person who shot this guy is a guy.
29:42Okay.
29:45I know it wasn't you.
29:47I know it was your car.
29:50You tell me you're the only one driving your car,
29:52so you were driving the car.
29:53I mean, yeah, but I don't recall being in wherever you're saying.
30:02I was, I'm the only one that hurts my car,
30:05but I don't recall.
30:08She had so many holes in the store.
30:10She wasn't able to answer certain questions,
30:11and, you know, her body language alone
30:14was just showing a lot of signs of deceit.
30:17Eventually somebody's going to be down
30:18to talk to you about this,
30:19and we're likely to serve you a warrant for murder.
30:23At that point in time,
30:24the color drained out of her face,
30:25and the realization of what was going on
30:28seemed to finally hit her.
30:30Your car is ours.
30:32It's wanted in our case.
30:33So I don't know if you own the car.
30:35I don't know if you have a lien on it.
30:37Alicia was a little bit shocked.
30:39She didn't really understand,
30:40or pretended she didn't understand,
30:42and couldn't believe that this was happening to her.
30:45Alicia was arrested in connection with the murder.
30:48We still had a lot of uncertainties.
30:50We still didn't know who was driving the vehicle,
30:53who pulled the trigger,
30:54who all was actually in the vehicle when this happened.
30:57At this point, we turned our attention
30:58to the other person in the car, Devon Howard.
31:02I think Alicia cares for you a lot.
31:04She made that real clear to us.
31:07She's gonna pay for it.
31:11She's gonna screw herself over.
31:13She's gonna protect you.
31:14She's gonna protect you.
31:19We all know that car has been involved
31:22in some bullsh** before tonight.
31:27Very recently.
31:28She's gonna protect you.
31:33Which is where her problems come in.
31:35From our interview with Devon,
31:37it was almost like he wanted to provide information
31:40to keep Alicia out of trouble.
31:42Not because he wanted to do it to clear his conscience
31:45or be a good person,
31:46but simply because he wanted to keep Alicia out of trouble
31:48because they were dating at the time.
31:51The mountain is waiting to fall on top of her.
31:55And it's happening as we speak.
31:59That car was used in the drive-by.
32:02Got the license plate of that.
32:04I don't want to mind getting her out of trouble,
32:11but I don't like a lawyer so I know what is safe to be said.
32:18My instincts were telling me that Devon had a lot more information,
32:23a lot more knowledge about what had happened
32:25than what he was telling us.
32:27We weren't able to determine what role Devon played
32:30and what happened to Andrew,
32:31so we had no way of holding him at the time we interviewed him.
32:36So at this point, we had to make a pivotal decision.
32:39The only information that we had gotten from Caleb
32:41during his interview was the address for his apartment,
32:45which was where he lived with Devon Howard.
32:48We thought Caleb was the shooter,
32:50and that's why we executed the search warrant
32:52of Caleb's apartment.
32:58When we got to the apartment,
32:59you got to be careful because in situations like this,
33:02a lot of times people have backup plans
33:05or they're associated with other people
33:07who don't like law enforcement,
33:08so you have to treat this with a very serious matter.
33:12Let's go check here.
33:15Look good?
33:19All right.
33:20It's clear.
33:21Find the TV here.
33:23I swear to God, I hear it.
33:24We're good.
33:24I'm going to have to wear it.
33:25We're good.
33:26Can we check behind his bed?
33:28Yeah.
33:29Behind, but not under.
33:30I don't think anybody can know.
33:31Behind, it's clear.
33:32It's not clear.
33:33It's not clear.
33:34I can't tell it.
33:35It's insecure.
33:35I've been hearing stuff, but I couldn't tell.
33:38One of the biggest keys of evidence
33:39that we found inside the apartment
33:41was a box of ammunition
33:43that had the same casing on it
33:45that was a casing that was found on scene.
33:50But as the case was starting to take shape,
33:52one question still lingered.
33:53Why Andrew was murdered?
33:55And the mystery of who killed Andrew Jenicic
33:59was finally starting to unravel.
34:00We still needed information to prove
34:12that these suspects were tied to Andrew's death.
34:16After we stopped Alicia and impounded the Mitsubishi Eclipse,
34:21we ended up doing a search warrant on that vehicle.
34:24In that vehicle, we found a receipt from the 7-Eleven
34:27close to the crime scene the night of Andrew's murder.
34:31We took that receipt to the 7-Eleven.
34:34When we got there, we asked them to see their video footage.
34:38They were more than happy to provide that to us.
34:41Being able to see that footage was huge.
34:43We see the vehicle pull up.
34:46We see Devon get out of the driver's seat, not Alicia.
34:49We see Devon exit the vehicle.
34:51We see Alicia get out of the vehicle.
34:53We see Caleb Vigil get out of the vehicle.
34:55One of the big things that that security camera footage showed
34:57is that Alicia was not the one driving,
35:00even though she swore up and down
35:01that she never lets anybody else drive her vehicle.
35:04So now we have our witnesses.
35:06We have a gun.
35:09We have our shell casing.
35:11We have our vehicle.
35:12And we have two murder suspects in custody.
35:15Alicia and Caleb.
35:17And now we're just looking for Devon Howard
35:19because we had no reason to initially keep him.
35:22But now with this new footage, we know he was there.
35:25We know he was involved.
35:26And now we need to get him back in custody.
35:31We had gotten some tips that Devon was trying to skip town.
35:35He had reached out to somebody about potentially getting
35:38his face tattooed to cover up his appearance.
35:42We got information that he was going to be meeting
35:43with a tattoo artist in a parking lot
35:46at a local ice hockey rink.
35:48Myself, Officer Young, and a couple other investigators set up
35:52at this ice rink and waited for Devon Howard to get there.
36:00All of a sudden, we see Devon walking across the street,
36:03and we pounce.
36:05Probably one of the best feelings for this case.
36:09We ended up placing Devon Howard into custody,
36:12and we take him in for another interview.
36:14At this time, we come at him with just the facts.
36:16I think the only thing that he really cared about
36:21was trying to keep Alicia out of trouble.
36:23You guys know she did not force her here.
36:25OK.
36:26That's what matters.
36:27I'm trying to get her out of trouble.
36:28I'm not here to get anyone out of trouble,
36:30except for myself, honestly.
36:31Right.
36:32When you've got situations like that and you've got people
36:36not wanting people to get in trouble,
36:37that clearly shows that they know more
36:40than what they're leading on,
36:41and you want to be able to press that issue.
36:43All right, so when you see this go down, right?
36:49You leave.
36:51You come out.
36:53Yeah, that's here.
36:55You come out here and make this way.
36:57Do you hit this guy?
36:59When he was on a, did you hit the?
37:01Accidentally, yes.
37:02I was a little panicked because, as I said,
37:04there was not playing.
37:07I accidentally hit him.
37:08Do you remember if he was lying down or was he up?
37:11I don't remember any of that.
37:12I remember he had him somewhere in front of me.
37:13I tried to turn, but I still remember
37:16running him over because I felt it.
37:18Devon admitted to us that Caleb had shot and killed Andrew
37:24and that Devon himself was the driver of the vehicle that night.
37:28I was shocked.
37:29I was shocked that he had no remorse
37:33for what he and his friends had done,
37:36and I was disturbed that he cared so little
37:38and valued so little somebody else's life.
37:41I understand, and I'm not saying you weren't,
37:43but we're just trying to understand what the mindset is.
37:46It's just a random act that goes bad.
37:48I don't know why the two got shot.
37:50I don't know how the situation occurred.
37:53All I know is that the person ain't up getting shot.
37:55I mean, I'm getting shot.
37:57I'm getting shot.
37:58I'm getting shot.
37:59I'm getting shot.
37:59I'm getting shot.
38:01I'm getting shot.
38:02My opinion was Andrew went to Billy Sims to go to dinner and was confronted by our
38:08suspects and was there to be robbed.
38:12Caleb Vigil murdered Andrew in the process while trying to be robbed, and the suspects then
38:18just took off without taking his money or phone or anything like that because that wasn't their
38:23intention to murder.
38:25They were there to rob him.
38:28Andrew died because they showed no compassion for other living beings.
38:35I don't think I'll ever experience something like this again.
38:38For me to investigate a homicide that involves somebody that I went to high school with is
38:42something that I'll probably and hopefully never have to go through again.
38:50The gun that was found in the Mitsubishi Eclipse next to Caleb Vigil was not Andrew's missing
38:55gun, but it was the murder weapon.
38:58It was test fired and sent off to the lab, and they were able to confirm that it was the
39:03same firearm that was used to kill Andrew Janicek.
39:07In the summer of 2019, Caleb, Devon, and Alicia were all sentenced in the homicide of Andrew
39:15Janicek.
39:16They're all serving life without parole.
39:24This entire incident was callous.
39:26It was senseless.
39:27The amount of pain that his family and his friends have to endure to this day, I can't
39:33fathom, nor do I ever want to, and it's a tragedy.
39:43On this page, I'm looking at my picture with the football team and Andrew.
39:47You can see me on the front row.
39:50I didn't play football, but I wanted to be a manager because a lot of my really good friends
39:54were on the football team.
39:56Andrew was standing here in the third row.
39:59I just remember how much of a gentle giant he was and how he was valued as a person and
40:04as a friend and as a member of the football team.
40:07And I'm just really sad that what happened to Andrew occurred.
40:16To lose someone that you see having a legitimate lifelong relationship with just leaves a hole
40:22there.
40:23And no one can fill that.
40:26No one's going to be what Andrew was.
40:28He was one of one.
40:30I lost a lifelong friend who would be here with me, playing with my kids, talking about
40:36the difficulties of work, balancing everything.
40:38It's just gone.
40:39And that's the part that hurts the most.
40:44I sat on a board for parents of murdered children for almost three years, and I did talk to people.
40:52And I heard a lot of horror stories, and you can survive it, but you need help too.
41:03This is just not the normal process of death.
41:09I was supposed to go first, but I think as humans, we have to grow and try to navigate
41:20our lives in a new path.
