00:00Text message, biggest concern, back-to-back trap games.
00:04I'm assuming Texter's talking about the Raiders the following week.
00:06Back-to-back trap games after what was quite possibly the most consequential win in Texans history.
00:13All cliche team motivators need to be on tap.
00:17Pedal to the metal, one game at a time.
00:20Don't ignore in victory what you wouldn't ignore in defeat.
00:22All of that to the max.
00:24That's from Cy Fair Frank.
00:26Yeah, you've got to pull them all out of your boot this week.
00:29Send in some more.
00:30Give us some more cliches that D'Amico needs to use this week to keep his team focused.
00:34If D'Amico's not tearing down their self-esteem as we speak, I'll be disappointed.
00:40A low-light reel of all the awful things they did in that Chiefs game.
00:44On the defensive side of the ball.
00:47Offense still needs a little bolstering.
00:51They need a little fluff for defense.
00:54Maybe just try to build up the offense.
00:58It's hard to find a lot of bad plays for the defense, but typically this year when they've
01:02had bad plays, it's quarterbacks leaking out and using their legs.
01:06I'm not that concerned about that with Jacoby Brissett.
01:09Yeah, I remember the first time the Texans faced Jacoby Brissett versus the Patriots.
01:13And I said, hey, listen, he's really not all that great with his legs.
01:17I know a lot of people are telling you that.
01:19And then, boom, he reeled off a 45-yard touchdown run.
01:22It was a sort of a run to the outside there, like an option run to the outside.
01:26It was a long run.
01:28It was longer than I thought Jacoby Brissett could run a touchdown in.
01:312012?
01:322016.
01:3316.
01:33That was the Texans were 2-0 with Brock Osweiler.
01:36And they were actually favored in that game.
01:38That was when Brady was serving his suspension for deflating.
01:42For what?
01:43What did he do?
01:44He deflated footballs, allegedly.
01:46Allegedly?
01:46Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:47What?
01:48I guess there's no alleged.
01:48I mean, they deflated the footballs.
01:50I guess the question was, did the punishment fit the crime?
01:52I think it was still, no.
01:54Well, the science that they used to prove that he deflated the footballs was actually
01:58just way wrong.
01:59Okay.
02:00But the guy that they called the deflator.
02:03Yeah, Strimski.
02:04Yeah, the story.
02:06That, for me, was the glove that didn't fit.
02:08Like, okay, you called him the deflator because he lost weight.
02:14I forgot about that.
02:16Let's talk about Deflategate for the next hour.
02:19Yeah.
02:20Here's D'Amico Ryans on his coach's show this week.
02:24They do a look ahead with D'Amico.
02:25They did one with Nick Casario, too.
02:27We'll maybe play that later in the show.
02:29This was D'Amico Ryans' look ahead to the Arizona Cardinals.
02:32You know, the Cardinals, they'll present some different challenges, especially defensively.
02:36You know, Gannon has done a really great job.
02:38He presents a lot of different looks, three safety looks that can be tricky at times.
02:42So, the communication, the awareness, identification of what's going on is going to be very key for us offensively.
02:51You got two good receivers.
02:52Tight end, McBride.
02:54He's playing really well.
02:55Guy catches the β he catches passes every game.
02:58I think he has some record of consecutive catches or something in a game.
03:02But it's just β for us, you got to be on your coverage.
03:05Brissette is a veteran quarterback.
03:07He's been a starter at multiple spots.
03:09Like, he's been around the league for a while now.
03:12It's a credit to him because he can come in.
03:14He can make plays.
03:15So, we got to get after him up front.
03:18Of course, you know, our D-line that's going to be key for us this game, getting after their front.
03:22And in the back end, like, can we go take the football away again?
03:25This would be the fourth team that if Jacoby Brissette is able to pull off the upset.
03:31And just for some context, the Texans are β they were nine-and-a-half point favorites yesterday afternoon.
03:35That line might go up to ten by the time it kicks off.
03:38But they are nearly double-digit favorites in this game.
03:41Jacoby Brissette has beaten the Texans on three different teams.
03:44So far.
03:45And he's beaten them five times in six starts while playing for those three different teams.
03:50Yeah.
03:50He's the T.Y.
03:51Indianapolis and Miami.
03:52He's the T.Y. Hilton of quarterbacks, man.
03:54Yeah.
03:55He's a Texans killer.
03:56He really is.
03:57Yeah.
03:57If you got to pull every cliche out of the bag and everything, you know, most coaches are going to say,
04:02hey, whatever, those are different teams, different coaches, different players, et cetera.
04:06Nope.
04:07Use it.
04:07Use it.
04:08Yeah.
04:09Foster a hatred for Jacoby Brissette somehow in these young men who know nothing of Jacoby Brissette.
04:14That's previous history with the Texans.
04:16Right.
04:16Right.
04:16Right.
04:17And, you know, people may go, well, Miami, what year was that?
04:20It was a Lovie Smith year.
04:21What about the β he was on the Indianapolis team that was β they beat the Texans in 2017.
04:27Yeah.
04:27Yeah.
04:28Yeah, he was.
04:28You've already given too many details.
04:29He was.
04:29No, no, no.
04:30But I'm on somewhere.
04:31Like, he's beaten good Texans teams before two.
04:33That's my point.
04:34Like, he beat a good Texans team in 2016 early in the season that was undefeated.
04:39He beat the Texans in 20 β I think it was 2019 when they were a playoff team.
04:43So, he's had their number at times.
04:45If there's a get-right game for the Texans offense, they're facing a defense that has allowed
04:51three passing touchdowns in three of the last four games.
04:55They're β you know, Jonathan Gannon's their head coach.
04:57Classic case of having a defensive-minded head coach where the defense has been a huge disappointment.
05:03And after β they got kind of started off hot this year, did they not?
05:06They were β well, they were β I don't know about the defense.
05:09The team itself didn't have a good record, but they were super competitive early in the season.
05:13Like, they lost β they lost some very β well, they lost that game to the Titans
05:19where the Titans fumbled a ball twice into the end zone.
05:23Remember that game against the β the Titans' first win of the season,
05:25the Cardinals had no business losing that game.
05:28And somehow β that was a game where Kyler Murray had a snap bounce off his face.
05:32Yeah, so it's β they were β they're not competitive now.
05:35I mean, they got worked by the Rams this past week at home, 45-17.
05:39So, they're β they're probably where they deserve to be.
05:42A lot of people texting in cliches for D'Amico to use with his team this week.
05:47Keep your eye on the ball.
05:49Keep the main thing the main thing.
05:50Yeah, dude, keep the main thing the main thing.
05:52Yeah, yeah.
05:53That wasn't β that's fallen out.
05:54That was a β that was a big go-to for a lot of guys for a long time.
05:57Yeah.
05:57Sean liked that one.
05:58Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:59And CJ likes that one, too.
06:01Don't read your own press clippings.
06:03Oh, yeah, don't do that.
06:04You like that one.
06:05Yeah, yeah, defense.
06:06Stop β now, the defense, though, I mean, they were β oh, the stat that's floating around
06:11out there, the average passer rating of the quarterbacks that face the Texans right now
06:18is lower than Cam Ward's season passer rating.
06:22Oh, yeah.
06:22They have, on average, turned quarterbacks into a worse quarterback than Cam Ward in his
06:27rookie season.
06:28Yes, yeah.
06:29It's just β it's that ridiculously good of a defense, and they do it without a whole lot
06:36of bells and whistles.
06:37They just line up and beat you.
06:39Yep.
06:39The one thing that Nick Casario had mentioned in the GM show with Mark and John that the
06:46Cardinals have β you know, they've had some explosive plays offensively.
06:49That's one of the things with the Texans' defense that they're not elite at.
06:55They allow more explosive plays than most of the other elite defenses.
07:00Still, huh?
07:01Yeah.
07:01Hmm.
07:02Okay.
07:03I thought they were better at that in the beginning of the year, but the stats don't back
07:06that up.
07:06No, they're better than they used to be, but they're still not β no, no, no.
07:09It's not that they're bad at it.
07:11Yeah.
07:11They're just β amongst the elite defenses, they've got β okay, so of like the top
07:1710 scoring defenses, the Texans are like lower than six of them in explosive play rate.
07:26Yeah.
07:27So it's still not bad.
07:28No.
07:28They're like β the Texans are about the ninth best in terms of allowing explosive plays.
07:32Yeah.
07:33But there's six β six of the elite defenses are above them in that regard.
07:38I guess the real β the real Achilles heel for the Texans' defense, and there are hardly
07:42any.
07:42This is a β I mean, from front to back, this is a really good defense, I guess, would
07:47be the red zone.
07:49When teams get in the red zone against them, they score at a higher than you would expect
07:53this defense to give up down there.
07:55Yeah.
07:56Yeah.
07:56So I think with the Cardinals, you shouldn't expect them to get into the red zone that
08:00much.
08:00But, you know, if you talk about letdown games or trap games or anything, that mental focus,
08:06that β like being really dialed in, that's where you sometimes have those busts and you
08:11allow the big plays.
08:12Texans are actually 14th in explosive play rate allowed.
08:16Okay.
08:16I don't like that.
08:16So they're average when it comes to limiting the explosive plays.
08:19Yeah.
08:20I don't like that.
08:20Yeah.
08:20See, that was the thing.
08:21You and I talked about the β not so much the explosive β we talked about the red
08:25zone a little bit before that Chiefs game, which is like, okay, this is an offense that
08:29can find its way into the red zone, or so we thought with the Chiefs.
08:33They only allowed two red zone opportunities the entire night.
08:36The Texans were outstanding between the 20s against the Chiefs.
08:40So, look, I'm not super worried about this game.
08:43I hope the Texans conduct themselves like they're worried about this game more so than how you
08:47and I β or at least me, how I'm acting outside the building.
08:50It's β you know, and then the part of it, too, I guess, is just β yeah, is the environment
08:54as fierce?
08:55It's hard for the crowd to get up for a game against a bad team from the NFC.
09:00Yeah.
09:01Now, that's an interesting one.
09:03The crowd was better for the Bills game.
09:06Look, the β look, things were β things were not looking good after that Denver game.
09:10You had two games in a row in San Francisco and Denver where the opposing fan bases came
09:14in and dominated the building.
09:16Jacksonville was the next game.
09:17Jacksonville just doesn't travel, so I don't know what to make of that.
09:19And the Texans had a huge comeback, so the stadium was half empty at the end because
09:24a lot of people had left.
09:26The Bills game was pretty good on Thursday night, but that's a Thursday night national
09:30game on Amazon.
09:31This β you're absolutely right.
09:33The crowd should come loaded for bear on Sunday just based on what this team has accomplished
09:38in the last five weeks.
09:39You know, they have put themselves β they put themselves in some conversations that we
09:44would not have seen them in even three weeks ago when they were five and five.
09:48There are a lot of people talking about the Texans as a team that can make a run through
09:51the AFC right now.
09:52I've never heard that phrase before.
09:54Loaded for bear?
09:55Loaded for bear.
09:55Yeah.
09:55I think that's β I think I'm using it right.
09:57I don't know.
09:59Fact check me on that.
10:00Yeah.
10:00Okay.
10:01Yeah.
10:01Fact check.
10:02Loaded for bear.
10:03Fully prepared for any eventuality.
10:05Yeah.
10:06Especially a confrontation or challenge like a bear.
10:09I think I used β
10:10I'm guessing.
10:11I think β how do they spell bear?
10:12B-E-A-R?
10:13B-E-A-R.
10:14Okay.
10:15All right.
10:15Prepared to deal with attacks or criticism or prepared to fight or argue.
10:20So they got to be ready to fight and argue.
10:22And argue.
10:24D'Amico, be ready for the refs, okay?
10:26Be ready.
10:26Go out there and see if you can win a verbal joust with Jonathan Gannon.
10:30Debate.
10:30Pew, pew, pew, pew.
10:32Oh, my God.
10:33It's like Jonathan Gannon and D'Amico Ryans in a laser tag bout.
10:38They're fake.
10:38They're phantom guns.
10:40Oh, my God.
10:41Pew, pew, pew, pew, pew.
10:43We got one reason I hate the Cardinals.
10:46Oh, yeah.
10:4720%.
10:47You just hate the Cardinals.
10:48We better start loading up the Cardinals.
10:50We should start loading up for that right now.
10:52Yeah.
10:52Text some of those in.
10:53I'll pick some off the text page.
10:54That could be what all the Stanford guys on the team, Davis Mills and Dalton Schultz,
11:01they can get angry about the fact that the Cardinals add an S to the end of their mascot.
11:06Oh, they have the plural version of their mascot.
11:08Putting on airs.
11:09Yep.
11:10One Cardinal is plenty.
11:13Mike, the Cyprusite, I think it's, oh, J. Mike, the Cyprusite.
11:18I thought it was Mike and Cypher.
11:19Put your foot on their neck and apply pressure.
11:21Sure.
11:21That's not a stay focused cliche.
11:25That's a fourth quarter.
11:27That's a fourth quarter.
11:28I was just going to say.
11:29Yeah.
11:29You don't break that out until halftime.
11:31Yeah.
11:31So that's a good one.
11:32That's a good one.
11:32You have that one in the holster for halftime.
11:35Yep.
11:35Yep.
11:35Yeah.
11:36D'Amico, let's finish.
11:38Swarm.
11:38We have a lot to clean up.
11:39We have a lot to clean up is a good one.
11:41Yeah, that's a good one.
11:42No, there are.
11:42There's lots of things.
11:43And he said this for a couple weeks in a row now.
11:45You come out of some of these games, especially after the Colts game where, man, all right, you could have done better.
11:53You could have.
11:53We had these opportunities we didn't take advantage of.
11:56Yep.
11:56Yep.
11:56Keep them hungry.
11:57So the AFC playoff race right now, Seth, there was a graphic yesterday that I saw from PFF.
12:03And, I mean, thank God the Texans won these last three games because we were saying, man, two out of three might get it done.
12:09You know, two out of three keeps them in the hunt.
12:11And the schedule is very fortuitous to the Texans right now.
12:14There's no doubt about that.
12:15Even if they were seven and six, I would feel pretty good about their playoff chances just based on Cardinals, Raiders, at Chargers, and then the Colts situation.
12:23You know, the Colts week 18, you got them at home and they might be playing a 44-year-old quarterback at that point.
12:28But PFF, these are the percentages, these are the seven teams that are playoff teams right now, the percentage chance that they are making the postseason.
12:38And, again, take these for what you're worth.
12:42I know you cite this all the time.
12:44The Jags were 98% to win the division over the Texans 13 weeks into the 2023 season.
12:50And what happened?
12:51They fell out.
12:53Broncos and Patriots are 99%.
12:56Hell, the Broncos are 99.9%.
12:59I would love to know what the 0.1% is.
13:02Like, what is that?
13:03Like an asteroid hits Denver or something like that?
13:06The Jags are 98% to make the postseason right now.
13:09Man, as much fun as we made of Liam Cohen and James Gladstone in the offseason, and I don't think they're a great team.
13:14I think they've been, I mean, they've won some close games against bad teams lately.
13:18They have, like not early in the year, like lately.
13:21But they're 98%.
13:22Steelers are 66%.
13:24I almost feel like that's not even the Steelers.
13:27Like, that's somebody from the AFC North is getting into the playoffs, and it's going to be their division win.
13:32They're the AFC South is what they are.
13:34The AFC North is now the AFC South.
13:36Winner's going to be the four seed, and it's been a bad division all year.
13:39Granted, with a lot of name value, a lot of marquee value, but those teams haven't played well.
13:44The three wildcard teams, ironically, the six and seven seeds, Bills and Texans, are 98% and 93%.
13:53The five seed Chargers are 72%, and that's because their schedule is really tough down the stretch.
13:59Yeah, and their offensive line is just a disgusting mess.
14:03They play a sixth offensive line package with former scary prospect Trevor Penning, who comes in as the tight end.
14:10Is that his role on that team now?
14:11Apparently, yeah, from some of the games that I was watching.
14:14Oh, my God.
14:15This is where the Texans stand right now.
14:17If you talk about the importance of really taking care of business these next two weeks, and just, man, it's the NFL.
14:24Any given Sunday, you could lose to the Cardinals.
14:26You could lose to the Raiders.
14:27For sure.
14:27But if they beat both of these next two opponents, the Cardinals and the Raiders, it's as long as they split the games against the Chargers and the Colts.
14:41So if they go 3-1, they take care of business.
14:43Let's say they lose to the Chargers and beat the Colts, you're the 99% chance of making the playoffs.
14:49If they win the next two games and then beat the Chargers but lose to the Colts, it's still a greater than 99% chance of making the playoffs.
14:55Yeah, they're standing over a 4-foot putt right now, basically.
14:59If they win these next two games and then lose to the Chargers and Colts, they still have an 80% chance of making the playoffs.
15:06Yeah, yeah, because that's 10-7, yeah.
15:08Take care of business these next two weeks.
15:12My God.
15:12I cannot face a January with no football in the city of Houston.
15:18I'm with you.
15:18I'm with you.
15:19It'll be weird, though.
15:20If they're a wild-card team, that's never happened before.
15:22All eight times the Texans have made the playoffs, it's been that Saturday 3-30 home game, man.
15:28You know, they've never started the playoffs on the road before.
15:32Oh, oh, okay.
15:33Because they've been at home.
15:34It's been at one of those games at home.
15:36Okay.
15:36Yeah, yeah, yeah.
15:38They've started the playoffs.
15:39Did I say on the road?
15:40They've started the playoffs at home all eight times.
15:42No, no, no.
15:43That's what I'm saying.
15:44You said that they were always there on that Saturday game, and I didn't understand.
15:49But it's been at home.
15:50Yeah, yeah, yeah.
15:50That was the main thing.
15:52I was just getting fancy with it.
15:53Yeah, they've never started the playoffs on the road as a wild-card team.
15:57That'll feel weird, not having a home game.
15:59If indeed it holds up, maybe they catch the Jags and they win the division.
16:03We'll see.
16:04Yeah, I don't want to get too far down into the weeds with all of this.
16:06If they win out, they've got a 78% chance of hosting the wild-card.
16:10There you go.
16:11All right.
16:11See, that's good.
16:13Wow.
16:13So they go 12-5, 78% chance to win the division.
16:16I like that.
16:17But, yeah, I think the only things that could change who's making the playoffs out of the
16:23AFC, someone's going to win the AFC North.
16:25It'll be Pittsburgh or Baltimore.
16:26Please be Pittsburgh.
16:27I want Baltimore.
16:29I'm treating Baltimore like Kansas City, Seth.
16:31I just want them out of the picture.
16:32I don't need Mahomes and Lamar Jackson with a second life in January.
16:36Because they, well, I say they can win on the road.
16:39Patrick Mahomes has never played a road game in the playoffs.
16:42You want to talk about weird.
16:43Like, that's, he's never played a road playoff game.
16:46I don't think.
16:47Did they have to go on the road for Buffalo last year?
16:50Maybe they did last year.
16:51He spent most of his time at home.
16:52I don't know.
