00:00crisis we've ever had. We need to build homes faster and more efficiently for all budgets
00:07and all Australians. And that's exactly what Future House is all about.
00:16Our mission is to build three houses for three families in just three months.
00:22For three different budgets using three different modern methods of construction.
00:30Now, we may not solve Australia's housing crisis, but we're going to give this a red-hot go.
00:38Previously, we met our three brave families who are joining us on this mission.
00:44The Fox family in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales are building two modular homes.
00:49Me and Helen are in the process of separating, so we want separate houses, but we still want
00:55it to be close to where our daughter is. The Quachini family from Canberra are building
01:01a precast concrete home. We have two beautiful children and a third one on the way.
01:07Unbelievable. At the same time, we're building a house.
01:10And us, the Juries, in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales, are building a 3D concrete-printed home.
01:18I'm having heart palpitations, just thinking about it.
01:24I didn't know it was coming today, no.
01:26Hey! You just knocked my side!
01:29But as you can imagine, three houses in three months?
01:32The system is ridiculous.
01:34Well, it's never going to be easy.
01:36Well, there's no turning back now.
01:45Tonight, the Fox family get off to a flying start.
01:48These are your two houses.
01:50Wow.
01:51But it's not all smooth sailing.
01:54It's kind of emotional still.
01:56After months of red tape and frustration, it's Geronimo at Sean's house.
02:02And Build a Love goes to a whole new level.
02:05I love you.
02:05Oh, I love you too, buddy.
02:07And my first look at my dream 3D-printed home...
02:11This looks incredible, mate.
02:13Look at the tree. Look at the tree.
02:14...blows my mind.
02:16Before it's back to the drawing board.
02:18No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
02:21Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:26Off he goes.
02:32Our farm in the Northern Rivers is our little piece of paradise.
02:35And right now, it's a demolition site.
02:50My mate Dazza is finishing off taking down the old caretaker's cottage.
02:54So we can build a new 3D-printed concrete house in its place.
02:59I can't wait to get started.
03:03But first, we need to salvage everything that's worth saving.
03:08Yeah, save it. That's good.
03:09And there's always some gold nuggets to be found amongst the rust.
03:21After the cottage came down, I thought,
03:23well, I'm going to salvage all of that beautiful hardwood
03:27because it was at least 70 years old
03:30and it's in perfect condition.
03:32And hopefully, we're going to find ways to reuse that in the new building.
03:39OK, that's a beauty.
03:40Well, these are going to become the jams, the door jams,
03:48for all the new windows and doors.
03:51Nice.
03:52So that gets fixed up against the 3D-printed wall.
03:55And then inside here...
03:56Yeah.
03:56..is where the new windows get fixed in
03:58and then your architraves go on the outside.
04:01Amazing.
04:02Yeah, we save all this.
04:04Beautiful wood.
04:05Great job.
04:07But these beautiful old beams aren't the only thing we're saving.
04:12All the concrete, timber and steel in this old shed
04:16will live to build another day.
04:20All flat.
04:21Beautiful.
04:25So, now that we're here...
04:27Yeah.
04:28..we can orientate the house like that.
04:30Yeah.
04:31We'll get beautiful northern lights.
04:32Straight into the front of the house.
04:34I think dreaming up your vision at the start
04:37is always the favourite process.
04:39Talking about your hopes and dreams
04:40and how you see yourself living on the land
04:44and then coming up here every time to site.
04:47And we all seem to decompress a little bit and relax.
04:51But now, all of a sudden, it's a build site
04:53and the stress seems to have followed us to our tranquility.
04:57In Canberra, the Quachinis have chosen to build their family home
05:07with precast concrete from ResiCast.
05:11Mate, I tell you what, what a cracker of a day.
05:14Yeah, how lucky are we, right?
05:15Oh, we should be at the beach, mate.
05:17Only we're in Canberra.
05:20After months of wading through red tape,
05:23today is a big step forward.
05:25It's knock-down day.
05:27Bill and Mick and owner Sean can barely wait to begin,
05:31especially as Mick's made some pretty big promises.
05:34Going to lock the four Betty up for Sean and Sarah
05:37and the kids in 10 days.
05:40Pretty exciting, isn't it?
05:41It's been coming for so long.
05:43I was at the point where I was ready to get the sledgehammer
05:45and just start doing it myself.
05:47Do you need a hug or are you OK?
05:49Oh, give us a hug.
05:50Come here, buddy.
05:51There you go, buddy.
05:52Aw, I feel better now.
05:54Are you doing OK?
05:55Oh, mate, I'm happy as Larry if we get to start.
05:58Yeah?
05:58Yeah.
05:58Here it goes.
06:01Oh.
06:06Well, I hope you don't change your mind.
06:09Oh, there goes the dining room.
06:11Oh.
06:13Here comes the brickwork.
06:19So the kids have been watching from home.
06:21We've had them on the video phone so they can see a lot of it.
06:28For all Sean's excitement, their family home still holds precious memories.
06:35I'm actually getting a little bit emotional at this point, you know, just watching it all go.
06:46So, Mick, this right here used to be a gazebo.
06:51So back in the day, they used to hold weddings right here.
06:54Weddings?
06:54Yeah, it's our wedding.
06:55In the backyard.
06:56It's our wedding arch.
06:57So, yeah.
06:58Sean.
06:58In the backyard.
06:59I love you.
07:00Oh, I love you too, buddy.
07:03It's really nice how well Sean and Mick seem to get along.
07:07It's just such a lovely working relationship.
07:09And I think we'll end up with a better house because of that.
07:14Look at the mess.
07:15You could have cleaned up for our wedding.
07:16Look at the mess.
07:17Hey?
07:17That's not a very good start to our relationship.
07:21You know, maybe if we get a divorce, you can have the house now.
07:25I'll get the house and the divorce.
07:27That's it.
07:28I'm done.
07:29I'm going.
07:29Here we are.
07:30In the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, after 40 years together, Michael and Helen Fox are
07:44building two houses on the same block of land.
07:48Me and Helen, we're in the process of separating, so we want separate houses.
07:54They've chosen to live side by side so they can both continue to give care to daughter Caitlin.
08:00There you go.
08:02Come on, darling.
08:03Good girl.
08:04Come on.
08:05There's a lot of work behind the scenes, you know, that goes into caring for someone with
08:10special needs, especially high support needs.
08:12We just went to bed and I said, look, I really don't want you having to move far away.
08:16It's not fair.
08:17So now we're building one each on the same block.
08:21We'll have all of our own kitchen, lounge room, dining, bathroom and laundry.
08:26And we'll actually have a room each for Caitlin.
08:28They're small rooms.
08:31But we have all that we need.
08:33That's all that we need.
08:35Yeah.
08:35So here is where Mummy's house is.
08:40This is a bit strange, isn't it?
08:41Yeah.
08:41Because Mummy's got a house and Daddy's got a house.
08:44But this is Mummy's house and Caitlin's house.
08:47And Caitlin's room is going to be over there.
08:49Over there, yeah.
08:50Nothing's really changed.
08:52The only difference is that we're going to live, or I'm going to live my life more independently.
08:57I've been with him for like, since I was 21.
09:01You know, it's lots and lots of years and I haven't experienced any other life doing anything
09:07else really, so, um, yeah.
09:10It might sound strange to a lot of people.
09:14Um, yeah.
09:16It's still emotional.
09:19But at the same time, yeah, it'd be good.
09:21Yeah, good luck to you.
09:26Can you come and have a look?
09:29Um, yeah, I think I'm coping pretty well with it now.
09:33It's, uh, initially it was difficult.
09:37You think your life's all set.
09:41And then everything changes.
09:44Yeah, it makes you feel quite down for quite a while.
09:48It takes a while to get over the shock of that and, uh, adapt to it.
09:53It sounds quite selfish, you know, in one way, that you want to do your own thing.
09:57But at the same time, it's healthy.
10:00Because you are.
10:03Yeah.
10:05Yeah.
10:07Sorry.
10:09It's kind of emotional still.
10:14Yeah.
10:18Coming up, can Nick realise my vision?
10:23It's a staircase.
10:25It's like Morse code.
10:26It's like an atom bomb.
10:28Look, I love him.
10:28I understand him.
10:29Uh, and I think we'll get somewhere.
10:32And still to come...
10:34It's really a matter of choosing what sort of colourings we're thinking for both the homes.
10:40That's just splitting it up.
10:40It's one of the advantages.
10:41We can choose whatever we want and blow what the other wants.
10:44The more things change...
10:45OK.
10:46..it seems the more they stay the same.
10:48Are you going to say the same thing?
10:50We're going to put the same flooring in.
10:51And, of course, you copied me.
10:53Well, yeah, there you go.
10:54On our farm in the northern rivers of New South Wales, it's a big day.
11:06After months of back and forth, Nick from Contour 3D is here to show me what I hope will be the final designs for our new 3D printed concrete house.
11:16Good to see you.
11:17Good to be here.
11:17Welcome to the homestead.
11:19Should have brought my jacket.
11:20It's been chilly.
11:20Yeah, it is.
11:21It is.
11:22When we first met Nick, he inspired us with the capabilities of 3D concrete printing.
11:30And I want to use those capabilities to bring nature into our build.
11:35I love the idea of having these beautiful concrete trees mixed in with a real tree that might sit in the centre of the house.
11:44Would that work?
11:45It would.
11:45No, no, genuinely.
11:46You know, the printer doesn't care.
11:49It'll do whatever you put in there within reason.
11:52Nick claims that with 3D printing, almost anything is possible.
11:56And in our initial design session, I gave him a clear plan of exactly what I'm after.
12:03That's a staircase.
12:05I'll have to work that one out later.
12:06It's like Morse code.
12:07And this looks like a, it's like an atom bomb.
12:14So look, between all these, look, I love him, I understand him, and I think we'll get somewhere.
12:19I realise I'm asking for a lot here, but it's not unlike me to push the boundaries.
12:26Yeah, there you go.
12:28So here's the model, which I'm hoping we can still bring some of these beautiful, you know, tree-like columns back into the house.
12:35The challenge is, has Nick realised my vision?
12:41Well, this is the tree that started the whole conversation.
12:47Look at these buttress roots coming out.
12:49I love the way the roots come down, and it feels like it's just completely bedded into the landscape.
12:56It's planted.
12:57Yeah.
12:58And this is what we try to mimic, you know, in the 3D.
13:01Absolutely.
13:02Yeah, yeah, yeah.
13:03I mean, I just love the shape, the contours.
13:07You'll look out from the window.
13:09Yep.
13:09Through these concrete columns.
13:11Yep.
13:12With a tree that's shaped exactly as it should.
13:15It's amazing.
13:16Yeah.
13:17Biomimicry.
13:18Biomimicry, yeah.
13:19It's where we mimic nature.
13:21And the idea of having the roof rest on a forest of concrete trees, I love.
13:31Shall we?
13:32Shall we see it?
13:33Come on.
13:33Is this the final draft?
13:34It's the final.
13:35Okay, great.
13:36Spin it around.
13:37Alrighty.
13:38Okay.
13:39So this is the actual layout that I think we've all settled on.
13:42So you can walk through the front door here.
13:44Yep.
13:45And look, it's just, it'll be stunning.
13:47Oh, it's beautiful.
13:48And with a combination of the windows and the 3D printed columns, you know, there's
13:52no post-finishing of the walls.
13:53Yep, yep.
13:54You know, it's all organic.
13:56It's magic.
13:57Columns look stunning.
13:58Yeah.
13:59You know, part of nature.
14:00Yeah, they do.
14:01But we'll get them in in less than a day.
14:02Really?
14:03It moves rapidly.
14:04We'll be printing it 200 millimeters a second.
14:07No.
14:07It just rises out of the ground.
14:09So.
14:10Quicker than watering a tree.
14:10If we get this right, this could be an absolute game changer.
14:18This might be the way that people build their new houses.
14:21Before this, you know, and all credit to you, I'd never thought of columnising a house,
14:25I suppose.
14:25Well, I hadn't either.
14:27But I was sitting out here and I looked at the tree and I'm like, we should just print
14:31a tree.
14:32Yeah.
14:33And print many trees.
14:35And then put the roof on top of it.
14:38I'm excited.
14:39Mate, me too.
14:39I mean, this is, this is revolutionary.
14:42There's never been a 3D concrete printed prefab house.
14:45So you'll be, you'll be first.
14:47We will be first.
14:48Yes, we will be first.
14:50I don't know if I'm crazy, brave or stupid, but this 3D printed concrete house is either
14:57going to be something very special or a huge white elephant in a beautiful forest.
15:02If we're going to build houses for the future, we've got to make them more resilient for Australia's
15:11changing weather conditions.
15:13Hey, Meeks.
15:14Yeah?
15:15Come and check this out.
15:16This is amazing.
15:18There's a new online tool that helps identify weather risks for wherever you live.
15:22It even provides tips on how to make your home more resilient.
15:27So, Suncorp Insurance have developed this website.
15:31We're just punching our address here.
15:33Yeah.
15:34And there you go.
15:36Whoa!
15:37Whoa!
15:37How cool is that?
15:39It's me, your home.
15:40It's good to finally chat.
15:42Our house talks to us.
15:45Can you believe I'm over 100 years old?
15:47Oh!
15:48Yep.
15:49Which is why we need to have a serious chat about my resilience.
15:53They say a home like me is a high risk for bushfires.
15:57This website works for everyone's area, so everyone just punches in their own address,
16:01whether you're in Canberra or the Blue Mountains or here in Bangalow.
16:05But that's incredible.
16:06I mean, that's a fantastic tool for people that are moving into a property.
16:09Climate change is something that's really relevant to everybody.
16:12You can see your own house.
16:13You can see what risks are relevant to you.
16:15See what you can do about them.
16:18Anyway, thanks for the chat.
16:19I really appreciate you taking the time to listen.
16:22And they've even used a fairly elderly voice.
16:26No, because she's 100 years old.
16:28Well, this is an old house, right?
16:33While I'm still mucking around with concrete tree designs for our 3D printed house,
16:38in the Blue Mountains, the Fox's two modular homes are well on their way.
16:48These are your two houses.
16:49Wow.
16:52This all started last Friday.
16:54Both houses, frames and crosses are up.
16:56And, you know, we are well ahead of time.
16:59Tomorrow, we'll build what we call rough-ins, so the electrical, plumbing and the aircon.
17:04I think, you know, we'll achieve lock-up in the next two weeks.
17:07Well ahead of time as well.
17:08Wow.
17:09We're going very well.
17:10That's good.
17:10You better start packing.
17:11Yeah.
17:12They've chosen the Snowgum 60 design.
17:16Two bedrooms with built-in robes, separate bathroom and laundry, open-plan lounge and kitchen with an island bench.
17:23There's a lot packed into this 60 square metres.
17:26Oh, it's fantastic.
17:28It's, yeah, really good.
17:30Very happy with everything.
17:31Yeah.
17:32It's brilliant to come and see what stage they're at.
17:35They're moving along really fast.
17:36It's incredible the amount of work these guys have put together in less than a week.
17:40The modular building process is not unlike building a lightweight house.
17:46The only difference is it takes place indoors.
17:49Last week, it was just raining cats and dogs, okay, but then our factory was just busy as, you know, we were still continuing to build and, you know, we didn't have any issues.
17:59We didn't have to stop because of the inclement weather, okay?
18:03That's one of the biggest advantages that we take with the modular.
18:06With Michael and Helen's house construction forging ahead, they're keen to decide on their flooring.
18:14And Carpet Court has made an on-site visit with their mobile showroom to help them choose.
18:20So this particular range here is the Parky Collection.
18:24A feature that I think is really important with this product, it's got the wood shield top coating on it.
18:30So you're going to find it's going to be really hard and sturdy for you.
18:34With their daughter Caitlin in mind, the Parky floor is the perfect option, as it's resilient and easy to maintain.
18:42The other thing that I love about this product is it's sustainable.
18:46So it actually uses 25% less wood than other standard timber floors.
18:53So it's really a matter of choosing what sort of colorings we're thinking for both the homes.
19:00Yeah, I like probably a lighter color because I'm going to have dark walls.
19:06Okay.
19:07But also a natural looking timber.
19:10It was an opportunity to choose different ones so we could be, you know, as we're splitting it up, it's one of the advantages.
19:17We can choose whatever we want, blow up the other ones and do our own thing, you know.
19:23Okay.
19:23I was thinking originally going for something a bit darker, but I've actually come back to the natural oak.
19:31Are you going to say the same thing?
19:33We're going to put the same flooring in, I love it.
19:37Look, let's get this clear.
19:39I picked first.
19:40All along I went to this particular one, the natural oak.
19:44Okay.
19:44Because I liked its warmth and lighter tone.
19:47And of course you copied me.
19:49Well, yeah, there you go.
19:51What more can I say?
19:52What more can I say?
20:04In Canberra, the Quachinis have knocked down their house.
20:08But now, Builder Mick and owner Sean have hit a major red tape hurdle.
20:15Do you know much about the solar encroachment?
20:17As much as any layman's person can.
20:20My understanding is it's about preventing my house blocking the solar effect on the neighbour's house.
20:27That's right.
20:28So you don't want to block the neighbour's house.
20:29Yeah, which kind of makes sense.
20:30Yeah.
20:30Because I'm designing this house to maximise the solar effect.
20:33We want to let everybody else do the same thing.
20:35In Sean's case, the solar encroachment rules require his house to be built two metres from the neighbour's fence to a wall height of just 1.8 metres.
20:44So this has to go down another 900 to reach the finished floor level.
20:51I mean, look, I'm about two metres tall.
20:54Oh, yeah.
20:55Two metres out.
20:57There's a shadow there.
20:58It doesn't even hit the neighbour's yard.
21:00And we're in the middle of...
21:01It doesn't even make it up my fence.
21:02My fence is doing more damage to their solar envelope than the house will.
21:06Well, true, isn't it?
21:07This really is red tape gone mad.
21:11So really, half a metre down will be your finished floor.
21:14You're going to be down in a hole, mate.
21:15Yeah.
21:16And what you're saying is I could probably bring the house up and change that, but I'd have to go through a DA.
21:22You'd have to go through a DA.
21:24Sean now faces some difficult choices.
21:27Endure the long delay of applying for a DA or lower the level of his house and cop the extra cost of excavating hundreds of tonnes of additional soil.
21:42I'm just going to spend the money and not wait.
21:45Well, it's cheaper for you to spend the money than wait.
21:47It's cheaper.
21:47It's three times as much in rent.
21:49Correct.
21:49Yeah.
21:50Yeah.
21:50It's not even day one, and we're already 20 grand in the hole, which is not even a hole yet.
22:08Rex and Hitek aren't the only modular home builder going from strength to strength.
22:13I'm heading to Queensland to see how another modular construction business, Ollie Homes, is growing to meet demand.
22:22CEO Dale Funston explains how far they've come since he joined 15 years ago.
22:29So back then, how long did it take to build one of these?
22:32A small one of these, about eight months.
22:34Eight months?
22:35Eight months.
22:36And what are you building them at now?
22:38Probably the four-piece one, eight weeks.
22:41Unbelievable.
22:42Yeah.
22:43CommBank has led the way when it comes to modular housing loans and business lending.
22:50We know that housing supply is a real challenge.
22:53Yeah.
22:53And prefabricated housing is one way which we really think can help mobilise supply.
22:59Let's go and have a look at the finished product.
23:00Yeah, that's great.
23:01Beautiful.
23:06Why did CommBank get behind prefab?
23:09Yeah, I mean, first thing is we wanted to do something about Australia's housing crisis.
23:13And then what we also have discovered is that manufacturing is alive and well in Australia in this segment.
23:21CommBank's funding is enabling Ollie Homes to expand their operations.
23:26You're now helping him build a second facility, is that right?
23:32We are.
23:32We are.
23:33That's going to be 550 home a year capacity.
23:36So that's going to...
23:37Wow.
23:37More than double the capacity that they have here today.
23:41So we feel very privileged to be a part of that.
23:50Having seen the designs for my 3D concrete printed house, I'm visiting the factory where all the magic happens.
23:57And I'm told they've got a little surprise for me.
24:01Oh, so we're going to do a VR?
24:02Yeah, exactly.
24:03You can see your home.
24:04Oh, great.
24:05Okay.
24:06This is amazing.
24:07Help you.
24:08Okay.
24:11Oh, that's beautiful.
24:13So you can walk around the house?
24:16Oh, wow.
24:17Okay.
24:18Look at the front entrance.
24:21Oh, my.
24:23This looks beautiful.
24:26Wow.
24:26This looks incredible, mate.
24:31Look at the tree.
24:32Look at the tree.
24:33We have the real tree into the tree.
24:36This is the exact tree on the farm.
24:39Exactly.
24:40The designs Nick showed me on the farm truly have come to life.
24:44When you actually put those 3D goggles on and you start walking through the rooms, it feels absolutely surreal.
24:51I mean, I started feeling seasick.
24:53Whoa.
24:54Sorry.
24:55The seasick.
24:56It's so incredible.
24:59I've actually never put one of those on.
25:01Oh, yeah.
25:02It's like you're going to fall over.
25:03It's in here.
25:04I mean, like, I've got the sweats with excitement.
25:07That was amazing, mate.
25:09That's awesome.
25:10Really amazing.
25:11That's really good.
25:12Fantastic.
25:13The virtual version of our 3D concrete printed future home blows my mind.
25:19And it's just a taster.
25:21Downstairs, they're going to test run the first 3D concrete printed tree column for our new 3D printed house.
25:32This is good.
25:34Yeah.
25:35Now we're on it.
25:35We're going.
25:36We're printing.
25:37Good.
25:37This is great.
25:38This is not the final material we're going to be using.
25:40So this is a slow setting material.
25:42Okay.
25:43But we get the general shape.
25:44Well, yeah.
25:45Look, the shape looks beautiful.
25:46So I can already see the tree.
25:48Yes, yes, yes.
25:48Starting to form.
25:49Yep.
25:50Oh, my God.
25:50Imagine this all the way through.
25:51Yeah, yeah, yeah.
25:52And it'll come through.
25:53It's like an hourglass.
25:54Yeah.
25:54And it'll come nice and straight and then belly out at the top.
25:57I've always wanted to build a house that mimics nature, right?
26:02Sure.
26:03And this is the first pillar of our new home.
26:07It is.
26:08It's going to look stunning.
26:10So this really is the very first 3D printed prefabricated house in Australia, if not the world, as far as I know.
26:19Because it's prefab.
26:21Everything's built in the factory and then brought out to site.
26:25Nothing like being the first.
26:27You could call us guinea pigs.
26:30We're always guinea pigs.
26:32Nick and his team at 3D Contour spend months pouring over concrete chemistry to get their mix exactly right.
26:41It's a high performance mortar.
26:42Almost 50% recycled.
26:43We've got a lot of herbs and spices in there.
26:45It dries to 60 MPa almost.
26:48Wow.
26:48So it's really, really tough.
26:49That's strong.
26:50Yeah.
26:51Mate, I'm very excited.
26:53Are you?
26:53Yeah.
26:54Yeah, I'm a little bit.
26:55Wait till we finish the test.
26:58We're making history here.
26:59Huh?
26:59I wouldn't expect anything left from you, Jamie.
27:02Mate, it's teamwork.
27:04I've got to say.
27:05You guys are so good to work with.
27:06It's really been fun.
27:08So we're getting a few expansion cracks now.
27:12Oh, no.
27:18No.
27:19No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
27:22No.
27:38So we're getting a few expansion cracks.
27:40Oh.
27:42No.
27:44No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
27:46No.
27:46No.
27:47No.
27:47No.
27:47No.
27:47No.
27:48No.
27:48No.
27:48No.
27:49No.
27:49No.
27:49No.
27:50No.
27:50No.
27:51No.
27:51No.
27:52No.
27:52No.
27:53No.
27:53No.
27:54No.
27:54No.
27:55No.
27:55No.
27:56No.
27:56No.
27:57No.
27:57No.
27:57No.
27:57No.
27:58That.
27:58No.
27:58No.
27:59No.
28:00No.
28:00No.
28:01No.
28:01No.
28:01No.
28:01No.
28:02No.
28:02No.
28:02So the moment I saw all of that 3D material fall into a pile of cow manure I just felt like
28:10this is never going to work.
28:13Because, you know, we couldn't even get up 500 millimeters and we need to get 3.1 meters high.
28:21why did that happen so the layers below weren't cured enough yet so
28:28this was always going to fail i thought i'd get to a meter but i was right 500 mil short
28:35well i guess that's why we do tests right for sure it gives us a lot of data it's like uh it's like
28:41elon musk blowing up rockets he'll blow five up and the next one's next one's good so yeah
28:46so and we're happy to fail you know as long as we learn oh mate that was
28:51happens so quickly right it does so i think we learn we live and learn and we'll uh we'll know
28:59what to do for next time so let's get back into it tomorrow more accelerant yeah we're gonna use a
29:05different mix i'll be honest seeing the column collapse was like watching my dream crumble
29:11right before my eyes nick's still confident but i'm starting to feel just a tad worried
29:18up in the blue mountains helen is looking on the bright side
29:31as she explores her new neighborhood yeah this is our street
29:36yeah you can hear the highway yeah you can hear the railway but it's quite pretty
29:43oh here we go this is actually a high-tech home here and uh this is actually a bit bigger than ours
29:51it's even got a slow combustion that's fantastic
29:55the foxes have chosen the high-tech snow gum design which is just 60 square meters and costs
30:03only 76k each to lock up when you add internals and fit out plus delivery and assembly the costs can
30:11vary a lot in the case of the foxes the total cost for each house is just over 200k
30:18incredibly high-tech promises both houses will be delivered on site and installed in 12 weeks
30:26they've got first stage got the walls up it's starting to look good isn't it yeah and um yeah
30:33i'm really hopeful for what's going to happen next yeah so far so good it looks good with both
30:39houses only being 60 square meters each michael and helen know there'll be some challenges i think
30:45it'll be pretty small but it'll be manageable don't you think i hope so yeah well worst comes to
30:54worst we could join them together and you know i'm sure it'll be okay yeah yeah but you'd have to
31:00move out without walls sorry
31:03in any house renovation or build choosing styling is definitely the fun bit well we're here at
31:15oddy australia they are all things bathroom laundry we're looking for bathtubs tapware sinks
31:23someone's already made her mind up let's go
31:26come around this way i'll show you an amazing farmhouse look path tub this is the bondi that's
31:40nice this is the little mini it's cute i like it a lot it looks like the old the old tubs i love it
31:47really exciting collection the bondi collection so this is all about curves
31:51and what's perfect about these ranges as you can see it's the plywood detailing
31:57yeah so this is water resistant but traditionally a lot of this joinery has been mdf right always been
32:03mdf so why do you do it out of plywood because it's more sustainable so it's longer lasting
32:08yeah you'll love it forever until you're sick of it you know and no formaldehyde no formaldehydes
32:13less volatile compounds yeah and tick tick tick what does that button do magic
32:20so this is face lighting perfect for makeup it's like a tiktok light like we could start our own tiktok
32:31there you go maybe you i can teach you how to dance or maybe you can teach me how to dance
32:37we could revive the manpower days oh yeah great let's move on
32:43now being a gardener my first instinct is to start any build with the garden
32:52regardless of the fact that our 3d test print failed i'm still chasing my da and money's getting
33:00tighter by the day
33:01in a couple of years time we won't have to buy any fruit
33:06oh definitely definitely
33:09our grand plan is to replace the cows with trees which is why i've been making plenty of visits
33:15to tony our local fruit tree guru
33:18how are you jamie how you going what how are you tony pretty good nice to see you mate
33:22now what have i got and what haven't i got i don't think i got any avocados did i
33:28no you didn't yeah so i'll definitely get a couple of avocados yep
33:31we've got shepherd which is your first one in which is march
33:35yeah yeah yeah you've got april here yeah you've got august here you've got wurtz here which is
33:39december amazing well that takes care of my avocado for the year doesn't it all right what else
33:45we got spent about three and a half thousand on fruit trees he bargained hard too i wouldn't
33:53mind some more of those dark oranges we got some peaches nectarines we got a blood plum
33:58blood plum may june here great yes i'll take all four yeah um
34:05i've got some lychees i've got avocados and we've got a whole tray of blueberry
34:11yep wow anything else you want i don't think there's anything left okay that's it
34:17i'm gonna i'm gonna rename you the fruit yoda is that all right that's all right
34:24plus you're the only bloke i know that's actually shorter than me yeah thanks so this is going well
34:30so part of my negotiation um tactic was that i would gift him some of our prize roosters
34:40this is where i get the big discount we love our roosters would we call them a gift
34:46they're the gift that keeps giving at 3am every day yeah they're in the prime of their life
34:54this has got to get me at least 100 bucks off
34:57holy moly i didn't think it was that person he'll come back he'll come back
35:05off he goes have you ever tried to catch a rooster it's not easy
35:11coming up the animals have gotten in and ate in all the trees it's the attack of the herbivores
35:26i want to get rid of all the cows and replace them with trees
35:31and later unless we get this resolved the next 24 hours i'm gonna have to go talk to the real
35:40estate and find out how much i can get for selling this block as it is bureaucratic bungles
35:45leave sean's dream home hanging by three we can't move forward
35:49on the farm it's been two weeks since i bought a forest worth of fruit trees from the nursery
36:01and i've just heard from my farm hand fab there's been a little hiccup
36:07so mate uh
36:09what happened so the animals have gotten in and ate in all the trees they look
36:19a quarter of the size that they were oh yeah
36:22did someone leave the gate open well yeah the bottom gate got left open
36:28and there's also another gate down the other end
36:31that uh they've knocked over the cows i think
36:35right
36:36this is like three and a half grand's worth of fruit trees
36:42i thought this would be great in a couple of years time we'll start bearing fruit and
36:47off we go we've probably lost a year of growth if not more well that's that rule
36:54this high i know mate i know all the leaves
36:58you know don't tell me farming 101 close the gates
37:04farm life it's tough on the farm
37:07i'm going to put barbed wire and an electric wire i mean it's obviously works on every other farm in
37:14australia so yeah i've never put up an electric fence before i wouldn't know
37:19i want to get rid of all the cows and replace them with trees
37:26i'm going to start absorbing carbon producing renewable energy and producing food
37:31yeah yeah i'm glad you're on this train with me mate
37:34okay i feel like i might need to go out and purchase a few more
37:39trees yeah
37:41more trees aren't the only thing on the shopping list for our new future home
37:49we're also looking for the most energy efficient kitchen and laundry appliances
37:54so we try to make sure that we work with brands and suppliers that have a whole range of options
38:02asco in particular are probably one of our most sustainable brands so
38:06in terms of the electricity and water efficiency but also in terms of how recyclable their products are at the end of their lives
38:14so they're thinking about the circular economy 100% how we use it and then also what happens once we're done with it
38:20amazing
38:20whoa these look cool what do these do these ones you've got your washing machine and your dryer
38:30it has a 10 star energy rating so it doesn't get much better than that
38:35that's amazing yeah you can't beat that because the dryers are one of the biggest energy users in the in the household right 100%
38:41okay we've got kitchen cupboard yep we've got laundry cupboard jaz you've nailed this
38:51the foxes are also making decisions about their kitchens
38:57so nilath is a sintered stone product it mimics a really similar process that natural stone so your
39:03marbles go through and then the heat is actually what gives it the pattern that you
39:08see on the product so it's not printed it's baked
39:15because of the way that we manufacture it's completely non-porous meaning that is really
39:20resistant to staining and it's ultra hygienic so you only need to use a little bit of soap some
39:26warm water and it's completely clean fantastic yeah love it already
39:30neolith's sintered stone is a hundred percent carbon neutral and greatly reduced silica and
39:39then we have my favorite of the collection which is called taj mahal so this has got a really creamy
39:46neutral it's quite a soft vein yeah i like that but i i think i might regret it
39:51i'm checking out this one yeah i don't know why she could tell actually which one i was going to
40:03choose um and it was called taj mahal i think i'd probably have to go the same one
40:10well chosen the same again it seems the more things change the more they really do stay the same
40:25next up on the shopping list for our future home is fans and when it comes to fans there's no bigger
40:31brand than this i think the key things with fans is that moving air throughout that whole house 24
40:40hours a day and it'll probably cost you anywhere between eight and twelve dollars a year oh wow
40:46that's it yeah well they hardly draw any electricity this beautifully designed bamboo model is called a
40:53haiku luxe the blades themselves have been designed to mimic an aircraft wing a 2.1 meter diameter fan
41:00just bear in mind you need a really big room and some pretty high ceilings to get that one in yeah
41:05so jamie this one here is basically eight layers of mosso bamboo layered on top of one another to
41:12produce this finish and from a sustainability perspective it's certainly best in class yep
41:19i can see this in the main living area now we've also got a bearing of that particular model that we've
41:25just brought to australia it's called the coastal haiku we make these fans as
41:30durable as possible in outdoor environments and the coastal model
41:34for your outdoor areas would be the go sign me up for that one
41:41coming up just i'm i'm done i'm done sean pulls the plug
41:47and listen if we didn't innovate we wouldn't have light globes would we edison you're calling
41:57yourself no
42:00in canberra sean quichini has yet another red tape bungle to unravel
42:11why are we stark once again on trees a number of a tree on the number of a tree on a report
42:23it's approved and the problem is but the certifier won't go i agree because of a number on a tree
42:31one number because that one number is not the same as that number an admin issue has resulted in the
42:38trees on sean's plans being numbered differently in two different reports the automated system that
42:46you have to fill it out on the thing you have to mark which trees they need to assess and then that
42:50creates the number of the tree it doesn't take it off the plan that you submit it just creates in
42:56whatever order you put them on them you drew them on their map yeah that's all it is not hard there's no
43:04legal reason to do this to stop this from happening
43:13sean's been trying unsuccessfully to navigate the act's fast track building approval process
43:19for 12 weeks longer than the 10 weeks it takes to build a resi cast house
43:25he's now run out of time money and patience
43:33so right now unless we get this resolved the next 24 hours i'm gonna have to go talk to the real
43:38estate and find out how much i can get for selling this block as it is because we can't move forward
43:43this has been months of stupidity
43:58i'm just i'm i'm done i'm done
44:00back on the farm those pesky cows may think they've got the better of me
44:15but they can't stop me enjoying a big juicy steak with my mates
44:21it's also a great time for my beautiful singer-songwriter amika
44:25and her band partner matt boylan smith to set the mood
44:43of course jamie would plant fruit trees and have a great vision and then the cows would escape the
44:49paddock and eat the fruit trees that's just what happens to us is it annoying yes
44:55is it frustrating sure i think you just gotta laugh and keep going otherwise i would be quite
45:00literally mad the 3d printing tests fail on the other hand is no little thing
45:12i'm actually really really excited to live in the 3d printed home i'm just really at the moment
45:19apprehensive that it's going to work because it's experimental i i'm nervous i'm really nervous
45:31there's no plan b there really is no plan b no we're kind of we're in too deep now we've committed
45:37but i guess we've got to put faith in the team around us and hope that it all works because
45:45listen if we didn't innovate we wouldn't have light globes would we
45:50edison you're calling yourself no
45:52no you're preparing yourself no i'm just saying we've got to try new things
46:05little things with you
46:15next time on future house sean finally gets some good news it's all been in theory until this point
46:22and now it's here it's it's real it's great i think just like it's a dream come true it sounds so corny but
46:29it is it's just a dream yep there we go we built a house in the time you went and bought five chickens mate
46:38well nine chickens thank you very much but at our farm on the northern rivers oh this way yeah this way it's a disaster
