00:00Croydon University Hospital began in 1885 as the infirmary for the Croydon Union Workhouse on Mayday Road.
00:08Later, it became Mayday Hospital in 1923 as it expanded with new wards and services.
00:16After joining the newly created NHS in 1948, the site redeveloped rapidly,
00:22gaining modern operating theatres and major new wings through the late 20th century,
00:27including a significant expansion in the 1980s.
00:32It briefly adopted the name Croydon Hospital in 2002 before being renamed Croydon University Hospital in 2010,
00:41reflecting its scale and teaching role.
00:44Today, it stands as a Major District General Hospital, serving South London,
00:49a long way from its origins as a Victorian workhouse infirmary.
