00:00This trust in the government isn't primarily caused by disinformation or anything else on
00:04social media. It's not echo chambers either. It's actually the economy, according to a new study.
00:11Factors like GDP, unemployment and especially inflation are what matter. The study looks at
00:16various economic factors and what it finds is that these factors are actually capable of explaining
00:22a great deal of the decline in trust. One way of putting it is to say that trusting government
00:29depends principally on good macroeconomic management. What does good macroeconomic
00:34management mean? In particular, it means keeping unemployment low and keeping inflation low.
00:40Governments that do that find over time that they're trusted. The good news in this study is
00:45that restoring trust might be as straightforward as keeping inflation tamed. The bad news for
00:50countries, especially the U.S., is that doing that is now a lot more difficult than before
00:55because of government mistrust.
