00:00The Ohio State Buckeyes have won the national championship, and Notre Dame's season comes up one game short.
00:17It's tough, man. There's not a lot of words to say when you lose the national championship.
00:26And what you all have done for this university is something special.
00:32We love you, man.
00:36And we're going to continue this thing on.
00:47The spirit of Notre Dame is a will to win.
00:51It's when things are difficult and people invoke the spirit of Notre Dame to bring them out victorious.
01:01Those wonderful words of the fight song, oh, Notre Dame will win over all.
01:05Don't forget, man, today's the day we're going to win.
01:08You can't walk the campus at Notre Dame or pray at the Grotto or gaze at the Dome without knowing that there is something special in this place.
01:17It seems to float across the whole campus on Saturday afternoons.
01:24We thank God for this wonderful spirit.
01:27We hope the blessing of Notre Dame and the spirit of Notre Dame continues to reach you wherever you are.
01:38Amen.
01:40Take the field! Hurry up!
01:43Welcome, everyone, to Notre Dame football 2025.
01:47The mindset going in 25 is no different than 24.
01:51It's to reach our full potential.
01:52What are we doing with Notre Dame?
01:56We got C.J. Carr, we got Kenny Minchie.
01:57We've got a battle that is not decided.
02:00We've got to make a decision here soon.
02:02We're going to be our starting quarterback.
02:04How's it going, Irishman?
02:08And Notre Dame has lost the season opener.
02:10The last year of fluke.
02:11Are you guys a real nil?
02:13Don't hide from it.
02:14We're 0-2.
02:16Defense, we've got to step up.
02:19Don't blink!
02:20You know, we ask prayer from Lamar when he takes the field.
02:23I'm you.
02:24Little more.
02:25Little more.
02:26It's extremely meaningful to play here.
02:29It's been a lifelong dream.
02:30I always wanted to play Notre Dame and, you know, never thought my dad would be there to watch him play.
02:35Another touchdown for Jadarian Price.
02:38Everything happens for a reason.
02:40God always has a plan.
02:41Yeah!
02:42My mom always told me that.
02:44Let's go, Irish!
02:47Let's go, Irish!
02:48Stay up!
02:50Stay up!
02:51Streaky for the end zone!
02:53That's what we needed!
02:55Is Notre Dame done?
02:56The answer's no.
02:58They do have to run the table.
03:00We're letting you create a victory!
03:02Let's go!
03:06Here come the Irish!
03:08It's the first day.
03:36This is my 16th first day at camp, and my fourth as a head coach, so you, again, you know what to expect, but it's still the first day.
03:50You know, you get those first day jitters, excitement, ready to get after it, but it's the start of a, it's really the start of the season, right?
03:58At the start of a new year, for me, I love to get up early and getting to work just so there's a time you have to yourself.
04:08I get to be a little bit selfish and work out, really be unbothered a lot of times, you know, kind of get my mind in the place it needs to be to be the leader that I desire to be.
04:23We love him.
04:29He respects us as much as we respect him.
04:31He'll do everything he can to lead us to be the best that we can be, whether it's on the field or off.
04:37Coach Freeman, as a leader, he's the do-it-first guy.
04:40He's always going to be there for you.
04:42He's a player's coach.
04:45I love the game of football, the greatest game in the world, man, the game of football.
04:50You get to compete, you get to play hard, you get to play physical, and ultimately, you find ways to win.
04:58There's a winner and a loser in everything you do, and we got to find a way to win.
05:01Everybody good?
05:20Here we go.
05:25Ready, ready?
05:27Last couple things, I'll put this.
05:28Just a reminder, okay?
05:29This is understanding.
05:30It's going to be a bumpy road, okay, on this journey, right?
05:35I was thinking about the freshmen that don't know what you don't know.
05:37You don't even know.
05:38This day one, you're going to be like, what the hell's going to happen?
05:41I don't know.
05:42You're probably nervous and all those things, and dudes have been here for six years, five years, four years.
05:45They're like, here we go, day one of fall camp, right?
05:48So everybody's at a different spot.
05:50It's okay.
05:51It's okay.
05:52Let's go practice, right?
05:54That's all it's about, okay?
05:55Don't worry about anything else, and I'm finished with this, right?
05:57There's a lot of noise.
05:58You're going to walk out there, there'll be more cameras, more people.
06:01But we put the hard work, put this program in position.
06:04That's why people are there.
06:06Everybody good?
06:06Find a way to get better on this journey, man, right?
06:09That bumpy road is the journey of you.
06:12Everybody on the same page?
06:13We've got to get better today.
06:14Finally, we get to go and compete a little bit, all right?
06:16And that's what we're all here for.
06:17Everybody good?
06:17Let's go to work.
06:18TGS on two.
06:19One, two.
06:19TGS.
06:29All right, boy.
06:30Rock and roll.
06:31Huh?
06:32All right, let's go.
06:32Lead them.
06:33Lead them, lead them, lead them.
06:34Let's go.
06:34Lead them and show them how it's done.
06:36All right, old head.
06:37Let's go to work.
06:38Lead the group.
06:39All right?
06:39Let's go.
06:39Let's go to work.
06:40Let's go to work.
06:41Fall camp is truly the grind.
06:42It's the one moment where there's no school, there's no really outside influences.
06:47It's just about football.
06:50Here we go.
06:51Let's go.
06:52Basically, you're up at between five and six.
06:55You got either treatments, tape, breakfast.
06:59Then you got two hours to two and a half hours of meetings.
07:02Then you go practice.
07:04Hell yeah.
07:04Let's go.
07:05And then you get a small break.
07:07And then you come back for probably another six hours of meetings.
07:12And then you got to do it all over again.
07:16Chin that thing.
07:16Chin it.
07:18It's either the most fun time in football or the worst.
07:22It really depends on the day.
07:25You get challenged personally, mentally, physically.
07:28And you got to be able to strive through that and work through that.
07:31Because it's going to grind on you the same way the season would.
07:33You want it to hurt.
07:38You want it to stress you out.
07:42Like the biggest lie in football is that you're going to feel good and things are going to work out.
07:47You're going to have something you've got to overcome.
07:48You can face some real demons.
07:52And sometimes in your mind you feel like, I can't do this no more.
07:55I can't do it.
07:55I can't do it.
07:57That's the demons talking.
07:58You don't even supposed to listen to them.
07:59You can do this.
08:00You can succeed.
08:02This is the opportunity to take reps, get better.
08:05Every single day you're competing.
08:08It's not yet win or lose.
08:10I know in the first couple practices there's going to be a lot of bad mouth and a lot of talk back and forth.
08:14But it's going to be up to us to find our identity, what works for us, and how we're going to move forward.
08:19The last part is competition, right?
08:21There's a lot of jobs for stake.
08:23It's about being available for practice.
08:25It's about going out and stacking days consistently and executing.
08:29Those are the things I think that makes training camp special.
08:34CJ versus Kenny.
08:36I'm telling you guys, it's a close battle.
08:40Quarterback competition is real.
08:41Everything I've gathered, whoever we pick, we're thrown to the Wolves.
08:45And they're going to have to be ready.
08:46We better make a right decision.
08:52A true quarterback battle is when you genuinely don't know who's going to be the starting quarterback heading into fall camp.
08:59The physical skills are what jump out with CJ Carr.
09:03The arm.
09:04The ability.
09:04CJ Carr is a guy who came in with a lot of expectation.
09:09A guy who I frankly thought would push Riley Leonard a little bit last year, maybe.
09:15There was so much hype and so much expectation.
09:18And for Michigan fans, surprise that someone with the Carr last name ends up picking Notre Dame and not Michigan.
09:24So Lloyd Carr is one of Michigan's great coaches.
09:28He won a national championship in 97.
09:32And CJ Carr is his grandson.
09:34So you're talking about college football royalty and a name that everyone knows.
09:41Minchie is more of the mobile quarterback threat.
09:43So he brings a little bit more of a dual threat perspective to the offense, similar to what Riley Leonard had last year.
09:50The natural ability and the skill set is there.
09:53I think it's tough to be around a quarterback battle, especially if it's really even.
10:01At the end of the day, we've got to go out and win football games.
10:03The guy who we trust the most is the guy who's going to get the starting job.
10:07It's going to bring out the best in both of them.
10:11That's what battles are for.
10:12That's what competition is for.
10:14It's to bring out the best.
10:15Let's go, man.
10:15Let's go.
10:16Let's go.
10:16Both are going to work their tails off to put themselves in a position to be the guy.
10:20Put this in the end zone.
10:21Let's go.
10:21Let's go.
10:23Kenny does a great job in preparation.
10:24He's going to know the offense inside and out.
10:26He's also going to know the defense inside and out.
10:30On me.
10:31From physical tools, Kenny's a super accurate passer.
10:35He has the athleticism to create some problems for a defense with his legs.
10:42He's never going to be too high, never going to be too low.
10:45He's always going to be playing the next play, which I think is important in a quarterback.
10:51CJ, he's going to put in the work.
10:55He's going to have the install done.
10:57He's going to know the defense install for the day before I even get in there.
11:00I got the corner.
11:01You got the shallow.
11:02He's got the OTB.
11:02He's got the over shallow.
11:05CJ's got unbelievable arm talent.
11:11CJ is a gunslinger.
11:13There's not a throw, a window that he thinks is too tight.
11:17He believes in himself, believes he can make those throws, which guys love.
11:22It's going to be an epic battle.
11:23They both understand the game, they work at it, they prepare, they both see it, they both have really good arms.
11:31Now, they're both inexperienced in terms of real game experience, and so they're more similar than they are different.
11:37Being a quarterback at Notre Dame is one of those positions that I think everyone wants and envies and dreams about.
11:46But when you're in it, it's a lot of pressure.
11:49You're the shortstop for the New York Yankees.
11:51Everybody in the country is going to know exactly who you are.
11:54You know, if things go good, you're going to get a lot of praise.
11:57If things go bad, you and Coach Freeman are going to have to sit on that podium and answer why.
12:01Day one, some good, some bad.
12:03Appreciate the way you came out here with tension and focus.
12:06Let's get back to work.
12:07It is a bumpy road, and the faster we can take a bad play and get like this, guess what?
12:12That's how fast we elevate.
12:13Coach is going to yell at you.
12:14I told you yesterday, we're going to yell at you.
12:16Okay, we're going to coach you hard.
12:18Take it, reload, and go for it.
12:20Last thing I had was just a leadership.
12:23Guys that have been out here, guys that are leaders, lead.
12:25Right, lead.
12:26It's your responsibility to make those guys around you and the guys that you're leading better.
12:31It ain't about just leading yourself.
12:33You've got to make this dude better, whoever this dude is.
12:37Good?
12:37Good work, man.
12:37Let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go.
12:39You got it, Bill?
12:40Let's go.
12:40Hey, TGS, how do you want to?
12:42TGS.
12:43Good work, good work, good work, good work.
12:46Good work, good work, good work, good work.
13:16But if we don't have the love for each other, the brotherhood, the team first mentality,
13:25if we don't have that, we're not going to reach our full potential.
13:29TGS.
13:31And you have to believe that to build the brotherhood, to build the culture of this program.
13:37I'm a part of something bigger than myself.
13:39Great teams have great players.
13:44They have great schemes.
13:47And they have great brotherhood and love for each other.
13:51I think this year's Notre Dame team, the expectation is to do right about what they did last season.
14:01They should be able to compete for a national championship.
14:05They're not going to surprise anybody.
14:06They're not going to be able to fly under the radar like they did last season.
14:09The pieces around that program and just what we've learned of the Marcus Freeman era, I think, is going to lead to really high expectations.
14:17You're going to be able to lean on the run game.
14:23Arguably the best running back room in the country, and I think the best individual running back in the country, in Jeremiah Love.
14:29Oh, he leads to man the 20!
14:31Leonard hands it off to Love, running right, through one tackle at the two, muscles his way to the goal line!
14:37Touchdown, Jeremiah Love!
14:38He's a freak show, Jeremiah Love.
14:41I've never seen an athlete like him before.
14:45Jeremiah is just a difference maker in every way possible.
14:52The whole world has seen what he can do with his legs, hurtling people, trucking people, making people miss.
15:00Love's the best to me.
15:01He's the best running back in the country because he's got the wiggle, he's got the juice, he's got moves.
15:06Love is something that we haven't really seen at Notre Dame.
15:09He's a home run threat every time he touches the ball.
15:13You can try and game plan for him.
15:14He's just that good that I don't think it matters.
15:17He's gone!
15:18I think he's the best player in the country, without a doubt.
15:21Jeremiah Love has done it again!
15:24I hear people talking about the Heisman, I hear people saying I'm the best running back in the country.
15:28In my mind, I still haven't reached the level that I want to be at.
15:31I just try not to listen to all of it, because I know that people's opinions can change in a snap of a finger.
15:38It's nice to hear, but it doesn't really carry any weight until I prove it to myself.
15:45It's gonna be wasting all your sprint yardage, you know what I mean?
15:49One of the most interesting storylines of last year was that Notre Dame was likable.
15:53This is a program that, no matter where you live in the country, you're aware of them, you've watched them, and you've probably rooted against them.
16:00And they became so likable because of Marcus Freeman.
16:03Looky, look. Have a good one, boy. All right?
16:07He's cool. He's young.
16:09Just really resonated with a lot of people who maybe had checked out or hadn't really noticed how much had changed since Marcus took over.
16:17Shane was awesome. To be able to shoot an Under Armour commercial with Shane Gillis, to have that guy that a lot of our players love to follow, he's a big Notre Dame fan.
16:34Hey, be alert of the camera there. Good. Here we go.
16:40Hey!
16:41Stay up!
16:42Stay up!
16:43What are you doing?
16:44All right, run the play.
16:45Here we go.
16:47Great run!
16:49Great run!
16:50He didn't really go exactly off the script, and so I had to be adaptable.
16:54Sometimes there's two whistles.
16:55Here we go. Another play.
16:56Here we go. Another play.
16:57Wait a minute. Just same play?
16:58He's a professional. He made it easy.
17:00Same play.
17:01Same play.
17:02Run it back. I didn't love it.
17:03I would say Notre Dame has gotten a lot cooler.
17:07Don't be off-sized now!
17:08Players are always coming in and out of college football, and just the style of the game that it is now, and Notre Dame is adapting to that style.
17:16Stay off! Stay off!
17:17Get out of the hut!
17:18Do it!
17:19I think that commercial's gonna turn out really good.
17:23Since we got him here, I thought, what else? We might as well let him say it a couple words to you, right?
17:28Mr. Shane Gillis!
17:29I got nothing. I don't know what to say to you guys. Good work today. I like what I saw out there. Guys flying. You like flying around? Yeah, hell yeah.
17:32Come on now.
17:33No, I don't know. Just a big fan. Hope you guys kill it this year again, and yeah, that's it.
17:37That's awesome.
17:38Yeah. Appreciate you, man. Thanks, brother.
17:39Let's go. Get a break. Get a break. Get a break. Get a break.
17:40Get a break.
17:41Hey, TDS on two. One, two.
17:42TDS!
17:43Good work.
17:44Hey, TDS on two. One, two.
17:45TDS!
17:46Good work.
17:47Hey, TDS on two. One, two.
17:48TDS.
17:49Good work.
17:50All right. I just wanted to get us together today to just kind of meet to go through some of our roster numbers, what 2026 roster numbers will look like.
18:00I hope you guys kill it this year again. And yeah, that's it.
18:02Yeah, that's it.
18:03That's awesome. Yeah.
18:04Appreciate you, man.
18:05Thanks, brother.
18:06Let's go get a break. Get a break. Get a break. Get a break. Get a break.
18:08Hey, TDS on two. One, two.
18:09TDS.
18:10Good work.
18:11All right. I just wanted to get us together today to just kind of meet to go through some of our roster numbers, what 2026 roster numbers will look like.
18:20A lot of the major college football programs have hired general managers. And now you're seeing them hire from outside of college football, NFL experience, other sporting experience, famous alums.
18:33Like you're seeing a lot of different strategies for the general management position. It's a totally different calculation than we've ever seen in college football before.
18:43Yeah. It was funny. I had to talk to the parents the other day and I was telling them my story and like my journey here and how I kind of through 20 something years, I was praying to like reach the pinnacle of my career, you know, and try to make it to a GM job.
18:58You know, thought it would be an NFL and not realizing the opportunities in college and how, you know, colleges now have all the GMs. But then it was like, I was telling parents, I was like, God also has a sense of humor too. Cause he made me the GM during this crazy time.
19:13The NFL has always had a model where the personnel department is separate from the coaching staff. Some of these head coaches make up to $10 million. And I think because of that, they're used to having full control over their roster, full control over everything.
19:28Just how's he been playing? A little up and down. Hasn't been, hasn't been the greatest year for him. The one thing he has done positively is I think he's shown a little more mobility than I thought.
19:43But now you've got a GM who is coming in to help you potentially take things off your plate.
19:49But you know how he's going to win. So I'm not, I think the players will come, you know, he's a big body. He's pretty consistent catching the ball. He just, you know, he'll break some tackles and make things happen. Him and Devin are similar.
20:02I think the best teams in college football, the elite of the elite still build through the high school recruiting ranks.
20:10That's what a general manager's job and purview is. We're going to run the scouting apparatus.
20:16We need to get in that way. Yeah, for sure. And that's either high school or portal. Yeah. Like there's no question about that, right? Right.
20:24We can't depend on those two to say, no, we have to get one more. Yeah.
20:30We'd be in a bad spot if we did not replay, you know, we would have to look better. For sure.
20:35The NFL, you know, it's, it's about what can you do for me right now?
20:41College football, it's all about development.
20:44Everyone knows, look, we're going to win national championships here, but you, we're also going to win off the field, you know, and then in so many different ways.
20:51And so we just got to keep selling that because, I mean, that's just fact here. You know, if you're only football here, it probably doesn't work.
20:58I'm here to help construct a roster. But as much as I'm here for that, I think, you know, I'm here to help develop young men. Prior to come, coming here, I did not realize how significant, you know, that was and that is. And I didn't realize how crucial that is to this role.
21:15Cool. All good. All right. Appreciate it. Thanks. Yeah.
21:21Hey, let's give the round of applause for, oh, the mentalist.
21:38Thank you, coach.
21:41Fighting Irish, Notre Dame. People say I can read minds. Are you ready for the truth? Can't read minds. I read people.
21:49Everybody right now, talk is cheap. Hold up your left hand. Good, good, good.
21:55Everybody imagine you have an invisible deck of cards in your hands and you spread them out nice and wide.
22:01You can see every single one of those cards. And everyone right now, look back and forth.
22:07Actually, don't even look. Look away. Look away and reach over and grab one at random. Grab one out.
22:13Right over here. One, two, three, four. Is that CJ? Hold that card up. Stand up. Let's hear it for CJ already. Make some noise.
22:23Try not to give it away. Red, black. Red, black. Hearts, diamonds, club, spades. Hearts, diamonds, club, spades.
22:31Ace, two, three, four, five, six, seven, and ten, Jack, Queen, King. You could have thought of any card. Is that right?
22:38Yes, sir.
22:39Turn your back so you can't see me, I can't see you. Hold that card up high with pride.
22:44Tell us all, nice and loud, before you open your eyes, what was that card? Say it.
22:54Three diamonds.
22:57That's crazy. That's crazy. That's crazy.
23:03I've got coach. Where's my OC and my DC? Where are you at, gentlemen?
23:07Stand up. Show some love. Show some love, offense, defense.
23:11Come join me, gentlemen.
23:17Pleasure.
23:19God is your witness. Have we ever spoken a single word in our lives?
23:22Nope. No.
23:23All right. You're going to be picking several players.
23:25Coach, look back and forth. Sweep your eyes.
23:30Stop. Obvious choices.
23:32I said offense, I said defense when I brought the coordinators up.
23:35So you know what I did? I made them think of someone else.
23:38Unsung hero. I think you did the kicker.
23:40Burnett. Is it Burnett?
23:42Yeah.
23:44Is that for real? Stand up for me.
23:45Noah.
23:46Noah, stand up.
23:48All right. Let's go.
23:50Mike, Chris, look around. Try not to say anything.
23:53Cover your eyes, gentlemen. Cover your eyes.
23:56All right. We had Burnett.
24:00All right. Who do I think?
24:02Huh. Keep your eyes closed. Close your eyes, gentlemen. Close your eyes.
24:05Hmm.
24:08Gentlemen, with your eyes closed.
24:10Mike, who did you pick?
24:11Owen Streeper.
24:12Take a look. Chris, who'd you pick?
24:14Tommy Powell.
24:15Open your eyes. Take a look. Take a look. Take a look.
24:18We're three for three. Rattle off. Random.
24:20Next player, coach. Who's next?
24:21Robbie Wolin.
24:22Okay. We got Wolin. Who we got next? Who we got next? Call it out.
24:23Eli Reardon.
24:24Reardon? Okay. There we go. Keep it going. Who's next? Let's go.
24:25Dominic Willink.
24:27Perfect. Keep it going. One more round. Who you got next?
24:30Don Shuler.
24:31Don Shuler. We got Shuler next. Okay. Keep going. Keep it going. Another player. Look around this room. Who's it gonna be?
24:35Malachi Fields.
24:36Fields. We got Fields. And one last player, Chris.
24:38Ethan Long.
24:39Ethan Long.
24:40There is no way we could have known who you would pick. You didn't even know who you were gonna pick. Burnett, tell us your first name.
24:44Noah.
24:45Noah.
24:46Noah.
24:47Noah.
24:48Noah.
24:50Noah.
24:51Noah.
24:52Noah.
24:53Noah.
24:54Noah.
24:55Noah.
24:56Noah.
24:57Noah.
24:58Noah.
24:59Noah.
25:00Noah.
25:01Noah.
25:02Noah.
25:03Noah.
25:04Noah.
25:05Noah.
25:06Noah.
25:07Noah.
25:08Noah.
25:09Noah.
25:10Noah.
25:11Noah.
25:12Noah.
25:13Noah.
25:14Noah.
25:15Noah.
25:16Noah.
25:17Noah.
25:18Noah.
25:19Noah.
25:20Noah.
25:21Noah.
25:22Noah.
25:23Noah.
25:24Noah.
25:25Noah.
25:26Noah.
25:27Noah.
25:28Noah.
25:29Noah.
25:30Noah.
25:31Noah.
25:32Noah.
25:33Noah.
25:34Noah.
25:35I can't hear you!
25:48Who's got cash? Raise your hand if you got any money.
25:50You got a wallet?
25:52Do me a favor. What's your name?
25:54Luke.
25:54Luke, have we ever spoken a word to each other in our life, ever?
25:57Go in your wallet, take out any bill you want.
26:01Stand up for me, Luke.
26:02I want you to fold it in half.
26:06Fold it one more time.
26:08And sit on it.
26:12Let's get five guys up.
26:13One, two, three, four, five.
26:16Gentlemen, stand up for me, please.
26:21I'm gonna have you each visualize a third and ten
26:25and what happens during that play.
26:26Whether it's offense or defense, who knows?
26:29I'm gonna have you close your eyes right now
26:31and see yourself on the field.
26:33Close your eyes.
26:34Good. Wake up. Open your eyes.
26:36See that number of yards right now in your head.
26:39Here we go.
26:46Long pass.
26:47Strong run.
26:48Bam! Huge first down.
26:4945 yards. Sit down if I'm right.
26:5412 yards, 11 yards.
26:55Both first downs.
26:57Sit down if I'm right.
26:58Jeremiah's trying to stump me.
27:04Quarterback sack.
27:06Zero yards gained.
27:07Am I right?
27:1545, 12, 11.
27:16We had zero yards gained.
27:18Right over here.
27:19Look this way at me.
27:20What is that?
27:22What's that noise?
27:22They brought out the chain to measure.
27:24We're within inches.
27:25We didn't get the first down.
27:26Nine yards on that last play, didn't we?
27:31And nine yards.
27:34Your bill.
27:35Your pocket.
27:36You're sitting on it right now.
27:38Take it out.
27:39Every bill.
27:39Every bill has a serial number on it.
27:42Read us.
27:43Read us the digits.
27:45One at a time on your bill.
27:46One at a time.
27:46Go ahead.
27:47Four, five, one, two, one, one, oh, nine.
27:56And wait, wait, wait.
27:57There's two letters at the beginning and the end of every bill.
27:59What are your two letters?
28:01N-D.
28:01Yeah.
28:02N-D.
28:03You know what that stands for?
28:03Notre Dame.
28:04And you know what I say when I see Notre Dame?
28:06I got two words for you.
28:07Go Irish!
28:12Thank you very much, Notre Dame!
28:14Thank you, Notre Dame.
28:34Everybody good?
28:37Here we go.
28:44Ready, ready?
28:45Yes.
28:46Good, man.
28:46Hey, I want to talk about leadership really quick.
28:49Some people want to be called leader, but they really don't want to lead and influence others.
28:53They just want the title.
28:55They want this position of being a leader, but they really don't want to influence other people.
29:01You shouldn't want a title that you're ineffective at carrying out the role, and that's okay.
29:05You should allow somebody else to lead.
29:06Real leadership's uncomfortable.
29:08Real leadership's uncomfortable.
29:09How you lead during tough times affects how people see you.
29:13If you're strong, if you're strong and courageous during high-pressure, tough times, people will feel your influence.
29:23If you're inconsistent during tough times and lose self-control, you lose control of your mind and yourself during tough times, people lose trust in you.
29:34Influence starts inside first.
29:36You can't convince somebody to believe something if you don't believe it inside of you first.
29:42If inside of your heart you believe more in individual glory, you believe more in what's best for me than the team,
29:53then don't try to be a leader and convince people to put team before me.
29:59It's phony, and people will see it over time.
30:02Now, to have influence on something means to change it.
30:06Being named a captain isn't about wearing a C on your chest.
30:10Being a named captain is a responsibility to influence those that you lead in the right way and to make the group better.
30:16The C is a reflection of the influence you have.
30:19So, if you want that responsibility to be a captain, and you're in your junior or senior year, then you'll come up here and stand and say,
30:31I want the opportunity to be a captain.
30:35So, if you want the opportunity to be voted on to be a captain, come up.
30:40Let's go.
30:40Be sure.
30:45I don't want this to be something cool.
30:46I want this to be, like, really, really, really sure.
30:49Like, you sure.
30:51It's a lot of responsibility.
30:52So, here's what we'll do.
30:54Pass out the ballots.
30:55To be a captain at Notre Dame is one of the greatest honors anybody could ever receive.
31:04Trying to emulate my brother, he was a captain at Notre Dame.
31:07And so, I'm trying to be my best that I can be to try and reach that standard.
31:13Whether it's 60 years down the line or it's right now, if you tell someone you're a captain at Notre Dame, their eyes will light up.
31:18To be a captain, period, is amazing.
31:20But to be one at Notre Dame, it just, it gives you a pride, a sense of loyalty, a sense of just, you're really doing it for the guys around you.
31:26And so, if I am a captain, it would be one of the greatest honors of my life.
31:30All right, appreciate that.
31:31Appreciate that.
31:32We'll tally him up and then we'll announce it later today.
31:37You know, if you're a captain, you have to set the standard and you have to be able to, you know, know when to really yell or not yell,
31:45who to talk to and how to talk to them.
31:47Love to your mock-up.
31:51Case-off.
31:55Wackerman.
31:56Being a captain at Notre Dame is, it's like being a president, I feel.
31:59Like, no matter what happens, no matter the situation, people are going to look at you to do the right thing and have your head in the right space.
32:07I'm a shooter.
32:08I think being named a captain here is, is one, is a reflection of the respect your peers have for you.
32:14It's an extremely high standard.
32:23It's a challenge to live up to the expectations of being a captain.
32:30All right, take a knee.
32:35The numbers were interesting, but basically there was six and then there was a huge, it was a separation between after six, all right?
32:46So I had to make a decision, I'm going to cut it at four or go to six, and I made the decision to go to six, okay?
32:51And so I want you, I'm going to name the captains, have you come up here, and then you guys can address the team once everybody's up here, okay?
32:58Um, Drake Bowen, Billy Shrout, Adon Shuler, Will Pauling, Emile Wagner, and Donnie Heinisch.
33:06Come on up.
33:06Thank you, Emile.
33:11It means the world to me, guys.
33:12You hold me accountable.
33:13I'm going to take this with a lot of responsibility.
33:16A lot of honor.
33:17Love you guys.
33:19You guys are all my brothers.
33:20I love you to death and to earn your respect is the greatest honor I could have ever received.
33:23I love you guys, and let's do this thing.
33:26This is by far the greatest honor of my life, to serve you guys in any way possible, man.
33:30I love it to death, and thank you all, man.
33:31I love this team.
33:32Love you guys.
33:32Go Irish.
33:34I really appreciate you guys voting for me.
33:36This place means the world to me, and I promise you guys I'm going to come in here and bring the right attitude, the right mindset,
33:41and hold all you guys accountable.
33:42I ask you guys do the same for me, and I love you guys.
33:44Go Irish.
33:46This is the greatest honor for me to earn the respect of every one of you.
33:49I love this team.
33:50I love this place.
33:51Everything I'm going to do is for you guys.
33:53I hope you guys hold me accountable the way I'm going to for you guys, so thank you.
33:59Greatly appreciate you guys.
34:00Just like they said, we're going to come in here and work every day, man.
34:02And like they said, bro, I'll get the shirt off my back for each and every one of y'all, and I'm glad y'all ready to go to war.
34:08Let's go.
34:10You know, I just want to make sure you six guys understand it's not about the title.
34:16It's not about wearing a C, but the responsibility you guys have.
34:20You've been voted to be the captain, so now you have a huge responsibility to make sure you lead this team in the right way.
34:26Everybody understand that?
34:27Good.
34:27Congratulations, man.
34:28Congrats.
34:29Congrats.
34:29What are we doing with Notre Dame?
34:32We got C.J. Carr.
34:33We got Kenny Minchie.
34:34We've got a battle that is not decided.
34:37Competition at the quarterback spot is really, really healthy.
34:40Come on.
34:43Damn.
34:44More than anything, I think what I expect to see is someone that can use his tools, that he has his God-given ability, that can communicate effectively.
34:54If you were calling the play, what's the first play you'd call down there for yourself?
35:00That's what I'm looking for.
35:02Ernie W fade.
35:06And switch bluff hook.
35:08Not necessarily getting into a mindset where they feel like they've got to win the game.
35:14I certainly don't want a game manager.
35:16I want someone who's playing up on their toes and aggressively.
35:19But at the same time, there's a lot of people around them that can make plays, and it's their job to make sure they're getting the ball to the right guy.
35:27Fourth and three to five.
35:31First call.
35:33Ernie W H.
35:36Switch bluff hook.
35:37You have to name a guy going into week one.
35:40Whoever that guy is is going to have to earn it.
35:42You know, I'm excited to see what they can do.
35:45I think the sky's the limit for both guys.
35:47Just remember, right, early in the deal in particular, first downs, first downs, first downs, first downs, first downs, first downs.
35:55Right?
35:55Let's gain momentum.
35:57Let's get the ball out of our hand.
35:58Let's just be decisive and move the chains.
36:01In a room where only one person plays at a time, I tell myself all the time, like, I'm rooting for the guy next to me.
36:09Like, I hope everyone else in the room goes out and has a perfect day of practice.
36:13Every day we can continue to just come in here with appreciation that, you know, I get to be in this situation, in a competition, at the best university in the world, and we get to play alongside the best players in the world.
36:27Why are you with the quarterback competition?
36:34How close are you to Nathan Astro right now?
36:36We're still in a competition.
36:40We'll go back and evaluate today's practice today and make a decision.
36:46We've got to make a decision here soon.
36:48I don't know when we'll make it.
36:49I don't want to put a timeline on it, but they've both been playing really, really well.
36:53In a lot of decisions I make, I involve people.
36:59I believe we have the best staff in America, and so how do you not take some of their opinions into account?
37:06Like, we'll talk, and at the end of the day, I have to make a decision.
37:11How are you doing?
37:12Good, man.
37:13You want to hear it?
37:14I'm good.
37:15I'm good.
37:16Stryce?
37:17Not really.
37:18Yeah.
37:18There you go.
37:19I hear it.
37:20I don't want to go to social media, but I hear it.
37:22I feel it.
37:27I've got to ultimately make a decision.
37:32I mean, it's never been like a closer competition, you know, than being a starting quarterback.
37:45You've got it.
37:46You've got it.
37:47There's a lot of things that went into why I made this decision.
37:54A lot of things.
37:56But this is the way I want to go.
37:59And I believe in you, you know, like, you have to understand, like, it's not about proving to other people that I'm at this.
38:09No, it's not.
38:10I'm just trying to reach my full potential.
38:12Coach, and that takes time.
38:16It takes what?
38:16It's going to take ups and downs.
38:18I know that.
38:19You're going to have some ups and downs.
38:21I believe in you.
38:23I believe in you.
38:26I want to follow you.
38:28The program is going to follow you.
38:30You're going to do great things, man.
38:32Appreciate you, Coach.
38:34You are.
38:35Proud of you, man.
38:36All right.
38:37All right, buddy.
38:39All right, buddy.
38:40Thanks, Coach.
38:40You care about these young men like they're your own sons.
38:44And to deliver news of disappointment to one and deliver news of excitement for another is a challenging thing to do.
38:53You good?
38:53Yes, sir.
38:54Good.
38:55I met CJ in 10 minutes ago.
38:58He's going to start.
39:00And it was a tough decision to make because both of you all deserve a start.
39:09And there's a lot of factors that played into my decision to say, okay, we're going to start CJ.
39:17Right now sucks.
39:19I understand.
39:20I get it.
39:21I've been in your shoes as a coach and as a player.
39:24Like, I get it.
39:25It will pass.
39:28And I can't say anything right now to make you feel better.
39:32But I know when it dies down, there's going to be a point.
39:37I know it is.
39:39I know it.
39:39I choose to believe this.
39:41But there's going to be a point where I look at you and I'm going to tell you this.
39:43I told you.
39:46This is just delayed gratification.
39:49It's one of the hardest decisions I've made in my life.
39:51And for sure, as a head coach, one of the hardest decisions I've made.
39:58Kenny, it was a difficult meeting.
40:01You had to deliver news of disappointment.
40:03I think if it ever becomes easy, you know, you might be in the wrong profession.
40:07I appreciate you, man.
40:12Yes, sir.
40:13All right.
40:13Yes, sir.
40:30Real quick, I wanted to grab you guys for one quick second.
40:32I met with the quarterbacks and I told them, let them know, CJ, we'll start, okay?
40:38I told them both, we're going to need both of them.
40:40They know that.
40:41I thought it was important that you all hear it first because it will be out on social media
40:46and all those different things.
40:47And you guys don't understand sometimes being in that position, everything's a big deal.
40:56Everything's a big deal.
40:56I told both of them, this is an example for both guys and for our entire program of delayed gratification, right?
41:08We name you a starter, you're great.
41:10It feels great in the moment, but you have to understand delayed gratification because that's temporary.
41:17If you don't understand that you have to continue to put in the work, right,
41:22to fulfill that title of being a starter, then you won't be a starter for long.
41:28And that goes for everybody in this room.
41:30I remember this.
41:31I remember being named the head coach here.
41:33That moment was one of the greatest moments of my life, but it was a temporary moment.
41:39People see, oh, man, you're the head coach.
41:41It's great.
41:41And quickly I learned the value of delayed gratification, the very first game we lose.
41:49What's the lessons I got to learn from?
41:51Hold on.
41:51I got to fulfill this title that I have.
41:54And it took three losses in a row to learn just a little bit more.
41:58But then you got to value delayed gratification.
42:00This, this too shall pass for Kenny and a lot of other guys, okay, that aren't getting what
42:11they want right now.
42:13But you have to value delayed gratification if you want to get over this and be better
42:19because of it.
42:20Everybody understand that, okay?
42:21So I thought it was a great opportunity just to make sure we understand this as a program.
42:30I feel like we always overreact to early season games in college football, but when
42:50you have a schedule like Notre Dame does this year, you actually are going to learn quite
42:55a bit about this year's team.
42:56And these are teams that have good defenses, and I think that's going to be part of it.
43:05As well as against Miami, you're going up against Carson Beck and all the experience
43:09that he had from Georgia, all he's got to prove at Miami.
43:13There's just a lot of storylines.
43:15If you've got to get somebody up for week one, they don't have a pulse.
43:19You're the only show in town on that Sunday night, prime time.
43:24Everybody's going to be watching you in that spot.
43:26I think it's going to be huge.
43:29I feel like the team is kind of getting ready for week one and kind of realizing that, you
43:33know, it's about to get real and, you know, we're not in fall camp anymore.
43:37It's time to kind of come together as a team.
43:39And, you know, it's not offense, defense.
43:40It's Notre Dame.
43:42We know who we're playing Sunday night, 7.30 p.m., Hard Rock Stadium.
43:46Let's roll.
43:46With tradition comes responsibility.
43:48Let's talk about the history real quick.
43:50I think if you're a fan of college football, you understand the game of 88 and how important
43:58that game was and the rivalry that really entailed.
44:02There have been hostilities between these two schools, bad feelings.
44:06At that time, those two teams were at the top of college football, so naturally there's
44:12a rivalry.
44:12That ugly few moments down there in the end zone.
44:15Pushing and shoving broke out.
44:17There was some kicking.
44:19History is something that comes if we're in the gold helmet.
44:22We take a lot of pride in it.
44:24This one in specific, it holds a little bit of a bad blood.
44:29We've won.
44:30We've lost.
44:31It's always a big deal.
44:32And it matters.
44:34And it matters in the grand landscape of college football.
44:3787 at Miami.
44:39Notre Dame lost 24-0.
44:41Miami won a national championship.
44:4388.
44:43Notre Dame wins 31-30.
44:45This play is about to explode.
44:47Wins the national championship.
44:48The next year at Miami, Notre Dame loses 27-10.
44:52Miami wins the national championship.
44:54So three years in a row, the winner of this game won the national championship.
44:58Sunday night is here.
44:59We still got five days.
45:01Right?
45:01So let's take care of the day.
45:02Everybody good?
45:03Let's go to work.
45:03TGS on two.
45:04One, two.
45:05TGS.
45:07Before you come to Notre Dame, it's nothing personal with Miami or USC or any other team.
45:11But as soon as you step on campus, you have that relationship where, okay, I have to hate
45:15this other team.
45:16Like, it's something personal.
45:17So that's how we're entering this season is personal.
45:21You know, this ain't your grandpa's Notre Dame.
45:23We're a different team.
45:25Everyone here has been looked down upon at least once or twice in their life.
45:28Everyone has fought for something.
45:30And so I think that gives us an edge that we didn't have before.
45:33And I think that this team is going to honor that tradition.
45:38When I put that gold helmet on, I know everybody is looking at us.
45:41And, you know, we have to hold the standard.
45:43All the people that came before us, all the history, the legacy, like, it's in my hands
45:47at least at that moment.
45:48How's classes going?
46:01And how many are actually going right now?
46:02They're going good.
46:03I mean, for me, I got all my core classes now, so I hired.
46:07School's pretty important at this point.
46:09Yes.
46:09I got to pass them.
46:11All right.
46:11So what do you got?
46:13Finance-wise.
46:14Right now I'm in corporate finance.
46:16That's your only finance class?
46:17Well, and macro finance and portfolio strategy.
46:22That's good.
46:23That's a lot of numbers, though, throwing at me.
46:26That's what a calculator's for.
46:27Huh?
46:28That's what a calculator's for.
46:29Yeah, I wish a calculator solved it all, but it don't.
46:32You know, you have all the emotions racing before a game, but being able to sit down and,
46:36you know, talk with your family and people who have been around you your whole life,
46:39it brings a sense of peace and, you know, calmness to you.
46:42I'm just hoping that tomorrow you guys can now hit somebody else.
46:48Oh, yeah.
46:48And all the fighting.
46:49That's how we talk about it, yeah.
46:51I mean, you go through all fall camp and summer, it's just...
46:53You're going against your guys.
46:54And it gets a little heated, too.
46:55That's the part.
46:56Like, you feel a little hostility in the locker room between guys.
46:59Like, now everyone comes together at this point in the season, and we all just go forward.
47:03So that's the question.
47:04Are you guys now friends?
47:06Yeah.
47:07How do we feel about tomorrow?
47:09I feel good.
47:10Probably going to storm.
47:11There's been bad weather around here.
47:13Yes.
47:14On and off.
47:14Florida typical, which you know.
47:16Yeah.
47:17Growing up for me, you know, I've always been around football, especially being from the South
47:20Florida area.
47:21My dad was a coach when I was younger, so, you know, I pretty much got right into football.
47:26You can't not get good from being from South Florida, you know.
47:29I was a Dolphins fan, but, you know, I wasn't really into college football game yet.
47:33You know, obviously, all family around me, friends, they all love the U, so, you know,
47:36it meant a lot going into that game.
47:38Our wide receiver room, I think it's going to be a big test for us.
47:41Oh, big time.
47:42If they stack the box, and essentially they're saying, I don't trust that your receiving room
47:48and car can beat them.
47:50Answer the call.
47:52It's going to be a fun game.
47:53On paper, it looks great.
47:55You guys just got to go deliver.
47:56Yeah.
47:57Right now.
47:58Was last year a fluke?
48:00Are you guys a real deal?
48:04They've been with you throughout your entire life.
48:06You know, they've watched you play countless games from when you were little to now, and
48:10they know pretty much all about you.
48:12So, you know, they bring you back down to the ground, you know, allow you to get out of
48:16your own head, and, you know, get away from all those emotions, and, you know, lock in
48:19for the game.
48:27Three receivers to the bottom, one to the top.
48:29It's Gilbert alone for Carr.
48:32The offense hasn't looked terribly sharp.
48:35Takes the shotgun snap.
48:36Carr looking right.
48:37Now spins out of the pocket.
48:39Pressure.
48:40I was on the other side of the field, and then I see CJ running around the backfield, and,
48:43you know, I'm trying to get open for him, but I didn't really know where he was going.
48:45Oh, he's running back to the 30-yard line, keeping the play alive.
48:49I see him running across the field on the other side, and then he's looking to the middle
48:52of the field, and I'm looking, too, and I'm like, I don't really see no one in the middle
48:54of the field.
48:56Carr looking downfield.
48:57Fire!
49:00Touchdown!
49:01Micah Gilbert!
49:03What a play by CJ Carr!
49:06And then he hits a no look to Micah wide open in the end zone, and it was just like,
49:09yeah, this boy's a baller.
49:11You know what I'm saying right there?
49:13Yeah.
49:13Throw it away, throw it away, throw it away.
49:15Heck of a first touchdown pass.
49:18Let the legend begin.
49:22Now for Miami, they feel momentum going to the Irish.
49:25They want it back.
49:27We knew going into that game was going to be a really good team.
49:29Feels like a really important defensive stand is coming here for this Notre Dame defense.
49:33They're very well coached.
49:34They have good running backs.
49:35They have a good quarterback.
49:37Carson Beck is really smart, so giving him time to develop in the pocket became an issue.
49:42You've got to stop that underneath crosser.
49:45It is just killing Notre Dame's defense.
49:49Applying the pressure was, you know, a big thing, and when we weren't able to do that,
49:53he was able to kind of pick us apart.
49:54Game is tied at seven, deep in the second quarter.
49:57Beck takes a shotgun snap.
49:59Pressure coming.
50:00Has to get rid of it.
50:00Throws to the end zone.
50:02And it's caught.
50:04Touchdown, CJ Daniels.
50:06It looked like it could have been picked.
50:08And Daniels came out of nowhere to bring it in.
50:12Let's go, man.
50:14Let's go.
50:20As an offense, you know, we're not a team that's going to back down.
50:23Carr turns, runs into Williams.
50:25Now throws.
50:25He has base on.
50:26Who makes the catch?
50:27And walks into the end zone for a touchdown.
50:31Just like that.
50:32It's a one-score game.
50:34We're not going to back down no matter, you know, what point in the game it is.
50:37And, you know, we're going to have that no-quit mentality.
50:39Three minutes, 30 seconds to play.
50:41Shotgun for Carr.
50:42Takes the snap.
50:44He's going to run up the middle.
50:45Across the five for the end zone.
50:47He's in.
50:48CJ Carr runs in for a touchdown.
50:52And the Irish can tie the game with an extra point.
50:57CJ was great.
50:59He showed what he can do.
51:01He's a dog on the field, off the field.
51:0547-yard attempt coming for Davis.
51:07This is for the lead.
51:09Drives it.
51:10On its way.
51:11And the kick is good.
51:14And Notre Dame has lost the season opener.
51:17It wasn't our best football.
51:19And, you know, it wasn't what we wanted to display to everyone that was watching.
51:23Going off the field obviously sucked.
51:26We lost.
51:27When you go through a tough fight battle like that and see your guys down, it's heartbreaking.
51:33I personally, you know, I think that as I failed it, I failed them.
51:37I didn't do the best that I could or play the best that I could.
51:39But I made sure to keep my chin held high because I didn't want to give them the satisfaction that they defeated me.
51:46Credit to them.
51:47Credit to them.
51:50We lost a three-point game to a top-ten team, okay, in a battle.
51:53And we know damn well we could have won that game and should have won that game.
51:56Right?
51:56We got a damn good ball team.
51:58But we got to get back to work.
51:59This taste of pain hurts, the embarrassment, okay?
52:02We got to use this as we go back to work.
52:04Proud of the way you guys played, man.
52:05A loss like that fuels us obviously, and I feel that really carries a team.
52:10And I think we'll carry our team, you know, to the end of the season.
52:13Go to work, stay together, and we'll get it fixed.
52:15Everybody good?
52:16Keep your heads up.
52:16Here we go.
52:17Hey, TGS out to you!
52:18Watch you!
52:18TGS!
