Dark Waters (The CIA Started the Investigation)

This is the first song from my album “Frederick Chipkin – Kew Gardens Troubadour,” Dark Waters is a song dedicated to our leaders who keep steering us into places none of us asked to go — the ones who sleep soundly while the rest of us lie awake, trying to hold our footing in a world they’ve pushed onto shaky ground. Truth is slipping further away, buried under excuses, denials, and decisions made behind doors we’ll never open. This song is my way of expressing the exhaustion we feel — frustrated by the lies that pile up, and tired of carrying the weight of choices we didn’t make. Dark Waters doesn’t preach; it just tells the truth as I see it — that these are the times (Dark Waters) they’ve handed us, and we’re the ones trying to stay afloat in them.

I’m proud of this whole album because it covers the full range of what life feels like right now — not just the political unrest and the sense that everything is wobbling on shaky ground, but the softer places too. There are love songs in here, songs about connection, and even a reimagining of a 400-year-old ballad Whiskey in the Jar that I pulled into my own world. The album is personal, emotional, and honest, and Dark Waters is the doorway into all of it. This song is me saying: here’s what the times have done to us, here’s what I’ve seen, here’s what I refuse to ignore. And I hope, when you hear it, something in you answers back.
