00:00One winter evening, Henry's driver said,
00:03We'll be out early tomorrow. We've got to take the flying kipper.
00:07Don't tell Gordon, but I think if we pull the kipper nicely,
00:10the fat controller will let us pull the express.
00:14The special coal they gave you is working well.
00:17Hurrah! cried Henry. That will be lovely.
00:25All kinds of ships use the harbour at the big station by the sea.
00:28There are passenger ships, cargo ships, and fishing boats also come here.
00:33They unload their fish on the quay.
00:35Some of it goes to shops in the town,
00:37and the rest in a special train to other places far away.
00:41This is the train railwaymen call the flying kipper.
00:50Henry was ready at five o'clock.
00:52There was snow and frost.
00:54Men hustled and shouted, loading the vans with crates of fish.
00:57The last door banged.
00:59The guard showed his green lamp.
01:01The flying kipper was ready to go.
01:10Come on, come on, don't be silly, don't be silly,
01:13puffed Henry to the vans.
01:15The vans shuddered and groaned.
01:17Trot, trick, trot, trick.
01:18All right, all right, all right.
01:22That is better, that is better, puffed Henry.
01:24Clouds of smoke and steam poured from his funnel into the cold earth,
01:39and the fire's light shone brightly.
01:41Hurry, hurry, hurry, panted Henry.
01:43They were going well.
01:52The light grew better.
01:53The signal lights shone green as they passed.
01:55Then, a yellow signal appeared ahead.
02:03His driver prepared to stop, but the home signal was down.
02:07All clear, Henry.
02:09Away we go.
02:12They couldn't know the points from the main line to a siding were frozen,
02:16and the home signal should have been set at danger,
02:20but snow had forced it down.
02:21A good strain was waiting in the siding to let the flying kipper pass,
02:30and the driver and fireman were drinking cocoa in the brake fan.
02:33The kipper is due, said the guard.
02:36Who cares, said the fireman.
02:37This is good cocoa.
02:39The driver got up.
02:41Come on, fireman, back to our engine.
02:43They got out just in time.
02:51Henry's driver and fireman had jumped clear before the crash,
03:02but Henry lay dazed and surprised.
03:11The fat controller came to see him.
03:14The signal was down, sir, said Henry.
03:16Henry, it wasn't your fault.
03:21Ice and snow caused the accident.
03:23I'm sending you to crew, a fine place for sick engines.
03:26They'll give you a new shape and a larger firebox.
03:29You'll feel a different engine and won't need special coal anymore.
03:33Won't that be nice?
03:35Yes, sir, said Henry doubtfully.
03:38Henry liked being a crew, but was glad to come home.
03:54A crowd of people waited to see him arrive in his new shape.
03:58He looked so splendid and strong that they gave him three cheers.
04:02Peep, peep!
04:03He whispered.
04:03Thank you very much.
04:05I am sorry to say that a lot of little children are often late for school
04:11because they wait to see Henry go by.
04:14They often see him pulling the express.
04:17He does it so well that Gordon is jealous.
04:20But that's another story.
