Illustration – Illustration 1969 (Canada, Jazz Rock)
The only album by the Canadian jazz-rock band from Quebec. The band formed in 1969 from musicians of two bands, The Phoenix of Ayre's Cliff (formerly The Dynamics) and The Jades, which played in Ontario and Quebec. Organist Richard Terry and saxophonist Norman Burgess from The Phoenix wanted to form a big jazz-rock band and travel to the United States, where such bands were very popular at the time. They met organist Johnny Ranger and vocalist Billy Ledster from The Jades and formed a group with them, which they called The Sound Syndicate. Since the band included two organists, one of them, Richard Terry, played bass. They were joined by Claude Roy, drummer from The Jades, trumpeters Benoit Perreault and Paul Perkins, guitarist Garry Beattie, and saxophonist Gerry Labelle. Perkins was soon replaced on trumpet by Leo Harinen. The band found manager Don Seat from Boston and began performing on the East Coast, gradually adding new members. While playing at a club in Boston called Lucifer's, trombonist Roger Homefield joined the band on stage and was so well-liked that by the end of the show, he had become the newest member. When Sound Syndicate came to play in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, Gerry Labelle suddenly left the band and was replaced by saxophonist Donald Sanders and his wife, Sherri St. James, who became the band's additional vocalist. With 11 members, Sound Syndicate auditioned manager Barry Wolfe, who recommended the group to producer Alan Lorber. The band impressed Lorber, and he signed them to a one-album deal with Janus Records. Tracks:
