Cecily Strong Speech On Voting - EXCLUSIVE
Transcript
00:00I worked at Planned Parenthood in Chicago. I don't know why I'm leaning down. I'm already awkward enough.
00:11I worked at Planned Parenthood at the corporate office when I was 25.
00:15And so what that meant is that every time somebody just looked up the phone number of Planned Parenthood, that call came to me first.
00:22So that means I heard all those calls. I heard all the fear and the anger and the exhaustion and the confusion and the annoyance.
00:33And also the fucking mundane, because healthcare is fucking mundane, no matter how obsessed these creepy fucking guys are with changing the laws.
00:45It's fucking mundane. But some of those calls really did stick with me, and I've carried them with me, and I think I always will.
01:00Now I will say, right now, it feels a bit like my skin has been turned inside out, and everything stings to touch.
01:11I don't know if you guys feel that way. Because, like, the past two years, like, sexual assault just keeps being shoved in our faces and talked about by all, like, the worst fucking people to talk about it.
01:24And why do we have to keep talking about it if it keeps ending with, like, a coronation of the assaulter?
01:30Because, like, ouch, that sucks. And I have to do a show about current events, and I have to find a way to laugh about it, too.
01:38But I think we probably all do, in order to survive right now.
01:44But that's also why I'm here volunteering, because I can't only be turned inside out, because I can't only be a person who despairs.
01:57You know, I'm actually happy to be something other than that sometimes.
02:02Sometimes. It's rare, but it's sometimes.
02:07But showing up, and volunteering, and then flipping the fucking house, that's power.
02:16That's power.
02:17And so, if you're like me at all, and, like, the worst voice in your head is screaming right now with devastation and despair and saying, like, what's the point?
02:30You're still showing up, and you're taking power back.
02:34And even though I want to sob all the time with my dog, I can't because of all the girls that were on the other end of the phone at Planned Parenthood.
02:44Now, speaking of power, I am thrilled to introduce our next performer.
02:51I think we're becoming new best friends.
02:54This is our second event together.
02:56We're kind of like New York Housewives now.
02:59Please welcome Sarah Morelle.
