00:00A firefighter has died after being struck by a falling tree in bushlands near Newcastle,
00:09New South Wales. He was conducting bushfire prevention work in Narong, south of the Bulladila
00:16fire, with a firefighting unit from the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service.
00:22The fire ripped through 3,400 hectares.
00:26Obviously terrible and a reminder of how difficult and dangerous this work is and how the people
00:32who put their lives on the line to protect lives and property do an incredible job for
00:37us in this state. Obviously officials are in the process of contacting that firefighter's
00:42family but it's a deeply distressing turn of events and a sad day for New South Wales this
00:48morning.
00:4839 homes have been lost across fire fronts in Tasmania and New South Wales after heatwave
00:55conditions fanned flames over the first weekend in December. Residents of Cooleywong on the
01:02New South Wales central coast were forced to evacuate with little time to spare before the
01:07fire destroyed 16 homes.
01:09A fire brigade dude just came up to me and he said uh it's a good idea we evacuate. There is a fire
01:28happening right next to our house. The fire started here but it's gone down towards where we live
01:32and already like over 10 houses are burnt down. National disaster zones have been declared
01:38in six areas across New South Wales. Thank you Jesus for the rain! That is the best news ever!
