An inferno at Koolewong, on the NSW Central Coast, required more than 250 firefighters and razed 16 homes in an hour at its peak on Saturday December 6, 2025.
00:00Very blessed when you see the devastation of those and some of the stories of some of the people.
00:07There have been evacuations in the past so we knew that the up the top could go.
00:13We felt safe with the railway line because that's our escape and that house should not have burnt down really.
00:20That was really, if there had been a fire truck here that wouldn't have burnt down.
00:24We were watching it and the owner was watching it.
00:27She was standing in the middle of the railway line watching it burn down and when she came up she said the house is on fire.
00:34It's comfort to think that there may not have been humans involved in such utter destruction.
00:42If it's a natural occurrence, well that's c'est la vie.
00:48Today, New South Wales Police have been able to confirm that the fire started in the bushland behind properties in Nimbun Road.
00:56There is no evidence in that bushland at this point in time to suggest that the fire was deliberately lit.
01:03They've also been able to confirm that the fire that started down near the railway line was a spot fire from the original fire.
01:10Which also confirms that that fire, there is no current evidence to suggest that that was deliberately lit.
01:16Our firefighters put themselves into harm's way when natural disasters occur and we thank our volunteers for preparing themselves for doing the training and to make themselves available on these really peak dangerous days.
