00:30Hello everybody, welcome to Countdown. It's Wednesday, October the 30th and that means it's the day before the day before All Saints Day and we are ready for an amazing show tomorrow because we're transforming not just the whole studio but we're all coming in fancy dress for Halloween.
00:48Finally got the top hat I wanted so I'm ready to go. You can't come as Fred Astaire without a top hat so I'm all sorted and genuinely there was a box that I opened that had part of your costume and I jumped because I'm afraid of them.
01:04OK. I know what you're talking about.
01:08Yeah and that's what I want to talk about because Halloween brings out all of our fears and phobias. What are yours no matter how irrational?
01:16Susie will know this because I've talked about it many times. I've got a really weird thing about tissues.
01:22Right.
01:22Like if there's just tissues that are just like screwed up.
01:25Tell me more.
01:26No.
01:27No I just find it really cringy. What about you?
01:31Well all the obvious stuff like you know when you grow up you get all the ones when you're a kid like I remember a good year and a half I didn't want to sit in the toilet because I thought a shark could come up because of what's he in Jaws too young but the one that stays with me and I've maybe mentioned this before it's the milk tray man you know from the adverts.
01:49Technically he was breaking and entering. He scared the life out of me. But in the black outfit he still scares the life out of me today. So you know God forbid he comes to the window with a tissue. We're both in trouble.
02:03Well let's get over to Dixonry Corner where we find nothing but good vibes. It's our guardian of the Dixonry Susie Dent and the comedian and the presenter Neil Delamere.
02:16I've now seen your outfit for tomorrow.
02:18Yes. Do you like it?
02:19We might all be green with envy. It's very good indeed.
02:22We shall see.
02:23Now is our champion going to make it our special Halloween show? David Rowe is back with us.
02:30Now you were here in 2001. Just remind me. So who was sitting in this chair in 2001?
02:35Richard Whiteley was there.
02:37So you would have caught the great Richard Whiteley the goat. And here you're 23 years later back in the show. How have the two experiences compared?
02:48It's very similar really. Nine rounds in those days.
02:52Yes. Easier.
02:52And the games. Easier. Easier.
02:55I don't think I could see Carol from where I was sat. I had to look on the screen.
02:58Really?
02:59I think that's the way the studio was set up.
03:02Wow.
03:02Different set up.
03:03And this is, we maybe shouldn't say this Rachel because it's kind of going behind the curtain a bit.
03:08But there was two different areas for the letters and numbers, right?
03:11Yes.
03:11Where now it's the same area and it's on a revolving, a revolving disc if you like.
03:17So but a few things changed but hopefully still is enjoyable for you.
03:20Oh yes.
03:20Excellent. Well listen, let's see if you can make it to tomorrow. You're up against young Liv Bryan from Liver's Edge. Am I saying that right?
03:28Yeah, Liver's Edge.
03:29Liver's Edge, better said. Spelt Liver's Edge, which is great for Halloween week in West Yorkshire. And you love to play darts. And I said, oh wow, what's your average? And you were like, no, no, I'm rubbish.
03:40Yeah, I cannot play. So I mostly just stick to watching nowadays.
03:45Right, best of luck. We're stepping up to the hockey with Liv and David.

06:40Same for me.
06:43Excellent. Very good work. Over to Dictionary Corner.
06:46Yeah, we couldn't beat six, could we?
06:47No. We had KVs, South American rodents from the guinea pig family,
06:53but just sixes for us, too.
06:55Visage, all right? Just fade the grey,
06:56and we'll get our first numbers round of the day. David?
06:59I'll have six small, please.
07:01Six small ones. You do like the numbers challenges.
07:04As do I. I'm with you, David.
07:05First one of the day.
07:07Six. Four. Two. Five. One.
07:12And another two, fairly small.

08:16And then take away the other two. Perfect. Well done. 2-4-4. In the nick of time. And David?

08:32It's a lovely match-up so far, isn't it? Let's get our first Tea Time teaser of this Wednesday afternoon. And it's bald guys. Bald guys. It's a great clue.
08:44Don't think about right, said Fred. Think of the Beatles. Don't think about right, said Fred. Think of the Beatles.
08:49Welcome back. Don't think of right, said Fred. Think of the Beatles. I didn't get this, but I'm deeply dippy.
09:11It was Lady Boggs, the American way to say Lady Bird, Susie. Simple as that.
09:15Exactly. Yeah. OK. Liv Bryan, our challenger with the lead over our brilliant champion, David Rowe.
09:23And Liv, you're choosing these letters. Consonant, please, Rachel. Thank you, Liv.

10:30Filed. And looking to pull back the points.
10:33Enfolds. Enfolds.
10:35Very nice indeed. Excellent. Great spot.
10:37And is that as good as it gets?
10:39In terms of number, yes, we had another seven.
10:42Yeah, fondles. Yes.
10:44And the week that's in it, Fiends, is there as well, I think, isn't it?
10:47Yeah, tomorrow is only going to look for Worsley.
10:49All day. All day.
10:51Right, back to within one point.
10:53We have been spoilt this week for Close Encounters,
10:56so let's get more letters from David.

11:42Just the three vials, how did you get on with that, David?
12:01Eight. Very well. And Liv? Eight.
12:04Well done, David. Summed. Yes, and for you, Liv?
12:07Same word. Fantastic.
12:10Excellent. Well done.
12:11Eight points each.
12:15So, speak to me, Neil.
12:17We only have some, Roger. We couldn't do better than that, could we?
12:20No, we couldn't. It's a lovely word there.
12:22Right, back to the number second time today,
12:24but Liv's first time choosing on national television.
12:27Two large, please.
12:29Thank you, Liv Elmore.
12:30Popular choice. Two large, four little.
12:34And this time, the small numbers.
12:36Seven, two, one, and three.
12:38And the large, two, 75 and 50.
12:42And the target, 236.
12:45236 numbers up.
12:46jago.
12:47We have a lot of people.
12:54We are right.
12:55We have a lot of people.
12:56We are right.
13:01We have a lot of people.
13:01We are right here.
13:02We may be lawyers.
13:04We have a lot of people.
13:05We have about two big people.
13:06We have a set of people around the world.
13:07What if we had aasmaSch분y and a singer?
13:09How is that, how do we do it?
13:10We have all the time to watch?
13:12We have water for the wheels and a half.
13:13We should be able to pour it.
13:13We have a lot of people.
13:152, 3, 6, Liv.
13:18Yeah, 2, 3, 6.
13:20And, David? Yes, 2, 3, 6.
13:21Off you go, Liv.
13:23So, I did 50 plus 75.
13:2550 plus 75, 1, 2, 5.
13:27And then 3 minus 1 is 2.
13:30Yep.
13:31Take that away.
13:33And then... 1, 2, 3.
13:36No, I've completely messed this up.
13:38Oh, sorry, Liv. It's OK.
13:40David, you can take the lead.
13:42Yeah.
13:4375 minus 7 times 2.
13:46Minus 7 times 2, 61.
13:49Plus 1.
13:5162.
13:52Times 3.
13:53Times 3 is 186.
13:55About 50.
13:56You know, this was an easy one, but that will get you 10 points as well.
14:00Well done.
14:01APPLAUSE
14:02So, I noticed before, before I even hit the button, you were done.
14:05So, what was the simple way?
14:07Yeah, 59 times 4.
14:09Yep.
14:10Let's go for the dexterity corner.
14:11Now, Neil Delamere, I mentioned at the top of the show sharks in the toilet for good reason.
14:17Yeah.
14:18Because I know you're going to be talking about scary moments this Halloween week.
14:21Sharks.
14:22Yeah.
14:23I dived with sharks.
14:24Oh.
14:25I dived with sharks in an aquarium in New Zealand a few years ago, right?
14:28And just before we get in, the instructor said a couple of things before we start.
14:30One, don't try and mount the turtle.
14:32LAUGHTER
14:33Number two, and I went, can we go back to number one, please?
14:36So, a woman had tried to kind of ride the turtle like a horse, and the turtle had just elbowed
14:42her pretty rightly, right?
14:43So, don't do that.
14:44Two, don't wee in the tank.
14:45It acts as a prey identifier for the sharks.
14:47Oh.
14:48Three, I was like, okay.
14:49Three, you can't hear anything when you're underwater.
14:51So, that means bringing me up to the surface, and that means I'm okay.
14:54And four, you were looking at those sharks through context glass when you were walking
14:58through the aquarium.
14:59So, those sharks are bigger than you thought they were.
15:01And I'm like, well, not only are they bigger than I thought they were, but I'm smaller than
15:04they thought I was.
15:05LAUGHTER
15:06So, if they're looking at me going, I couldn't eat a whole one.
15:09Then I get in and they're like, he comes in fun size as well.
15:11This is brilliant.
15:12So, I get in and I'm swimming around and the turtle is just wary and I don't go near the
15:16turtle.
15:17And then I see David O'Doherty.
15:20By the way, the woman says, this is true, right?
15:23The woman says, if you get attacked, I'll defend you using this stick.
15:26And she had a white stick about that long.
15:28And I was like, you better be Harry Potter or we're going to die in this tank.
15:31So, I'm swimming through the tank and David O'Doherty, who's a maid of mine, was walking
15:35through the aquarium with this bus tour and I'm banging on the side of it going, Dave,
15:39Dave, Dave.
15:40And he looks at me and because he can't hear me, I go, hey, like this, right, which is
15:44the wrong signal.
15:45So, the woman thinks I'm panicking and grabs me to pull me out of the shark tank.
15:49So, I'm in a tank with sharks and something I cannot see has just grabbed me to pull
15:55me to the surface.
15:56I pre-identified all over myself.
15:58All over myself.
16:01And she drags me to the top and she goes, they're not going to eat you, you idiot.
16:05And I said, well, I don't know that.
16:06And she goes, well, in the wild they eat once every six weeks and they're fed twice a week
16:10here.
16:11Would you eat in those circumstances?
16:12And I was like, would you go out for a meal if that happened?
16:14And I was like, no, I wouldn't.
16:16But if I was at home and chips just floated by, only defended by other chips and they'd put
16:23vinegar on themselves, I might be tempted to snack.
16:27But they were brilliant.
16:28But it was terrifying.
16:29What a story.
16:30Thank you, David.
16:31APPLAUSE
16:33Yes, well, swimming with sharks and going on national TV for the first time.
16:37Equally as scary.
16:38Liv Bryan doing very, very well.
16:40Just nine points behind our brilliant champion David Rowe.
16:44So, let's get on with it.

17:59And for you, David?
18:00Patina.
18:01Patina.
18:02Yes.
18:03The sheen, very good indeed.
18:05The sheen of something kind of bronze or brass, is it?
18:08Exactly, yes, so it's, basically it's the outer layer of something, the patina.
18:14A green or brown film on the surface of bronze, produced by oxidisation, or a gloss acquired
18:20by age.
18:21What a spot.
18:22Anything else?
18:23Yes.
18:24There's a six there that I really like, Taipan, the snake.
18:25Yeah.
18:26But, and you have an amazing six I'd never heard of.
18:29Oh, just another animal, Wapiti, D-W-A-P-I-T-I, a red deer that you will find in North America.
18:36Excellent.
18:37Thank you so much.
18:38Okay.
18:39Liv, drop back a little bit there, but still very much game on.
18:42Your letters.
18:43Consonant, please.
18:44Thank you, Liv.
18:45Yes.
18:46And another one.

18:54And another.
18:55U.
18:56And a consonant.
18:57S.
18:58A vowel.
18:59A.
19:00And a consonant, please.
19:01And lastly, N.
19:02And let's play.
19:03And a vowel.
19:04A.
19:05And a consonant, please.
19:06And lastly, N.
19:07And let's play.
19:08And lastly, N.
19:09And let's play.
19:10And lastly, N.
19:11And lastly, N.
19:12And let's play.
19:13And that's time, Liv.
19:14A six.
19:15And that's time, Liv.
19:43A six.
19:43And for you, David.
19:45Five.
19:45And a five.
19:46It's never over.
19:48David.
19:48Shuns.
19:49And for you, Liv.
19:51Saunas.
19:51Very nice indeed.
19:53There you go.
19:53Why have one when you're going to have two?
19:55And that'll get you the points.
19:58Neil, you were sweaty during that round.
20:00Anything else?
20:01I was, yeah.
20:03Nausea is there for six.
20:05Can you pluralise it?
20:07No.
20:08I did check that.
20:10You can't.
20:10But you can henna your skin.
20:12So henna's is another six.
20:14But six was the best for us.
20:16All right.
20:16Look at that.
20:17Nine points in it.
20:18We know what that means.
20:20David, numbers.
20:21I'll have six small again, please.
20:23Six small.
20:23I knew it was going to be a six large...
20:25Six smaller or four large, rather.
20:26And you've gone with this kind of challenge.
20:29Your little one, sir.
20:31Eight, five, one, eight, six, and five.
20:37And the target this time, ooh, 883.
20:40883.
20:41Numbers are.
21:118, 8, 3, David.
21:158, 8, 1.
21:16Wow, two away, Liv.
21:17Nowhere near.
21:18Right, two away is excellent.
21:20Off you go.
21:21Six times five.
21:23Six times five, 30.
21:24Minus eight.
21:26Minus eight, 22.
21:27Times by five.
21:29Times by five, 110.
21:31Times by eight.
21:32The second eight for 880.
21:34And add one.
21:34And add one.
21:36Bet you wanted a three there.
21:37Yes, two away.
21:38Well done.
21:39What about 8, 8, 3, Richard?
21:42Well, you can say 18 times 49 gets you to 8, 8, 2.
21:47But this was impossible.
21:48One away was the best.
21:49So two away, a great effort.

23:45What's the six?
23:47Tea men.
23:48Tea men.
23:49I'm thinking, I don't know, maybe cricket.
23:51Maybe a cricket.
23:52They bring tea out.
23:54Well, we have tea ladies, don't we?
23:56But I'm not there, I'm afraid.
23:57I'm sorry, David.
23:59Not in the dictionary.
24:00There you go.
24:00Don't stew over that, though, David.
24:02It was your own fault for going for it.
24:04So the five counts.
24:06We're back to 11 points, the gap.
24:09What did you have in dictionary corner?
24:10Anything beyond the five?
24:11Yeah, there is a six there, yeah.
24:13Ketone.
24:14Ketone.
24:14Yeah, do you know when people talk about going into key...
24:16No, not the boop, boop, boop, boop.
24:18I think that's it.
24:19Oh, I thought it'd be your ketone.
24:19No, no, no.
24:20You know the old Nokia's?
24:21Yeah.
24:22No.
24:24I think it's...
24:25Do you know when people talk about going into ketosis,
24:27you know, when they don't eat carbs and all that sort of stuff?
24:30Yeah, yeah.
24:30So it's what your liver produces when it breaks down fat,
24:35but we use ketones for energy when we fast, for example,
24:39that kind of thing.
24:40Fantastic.
24:41Excellent.
24:41What a difference a Y makes.
24:43Let's get more letters now.

25:49David? Seven. And Liv?
25:52I'll risk an eight. Look at this, she's going for it.
25:55What's the seven? Outages.
25:58Now, David took a risk in the last round,
26:01came a cropper, is the same fate about to befall Liv?
26:05Er, pastages.
26:07Oh!
26:08Chance?
26:09BUZZER
26:10Chance?
26:11No, it is a mass noun, unfortunately.
26:15Erm, and, yes, there's no sense in which we can put the S on.
26:19I'm so sorry. Goodness me.
26:21It's not the one we hoped you would go for there.
26:24So what was the one, then?
26:25Well, I have a feeling Olivia might have got this one as well.
26:28Upstages. Upstages.
26:30Yeah.
26:31That's exactly what you're trying to do to the great David Rowe.
26:34Should've went with that one.
26:35Er, all right, there you go.
26:36Thrilling round for us.
26:38And nothing else to add, Dictionary Corner?
26:40No. No.
26:41Upstages.
26:42And we stay with you, because it's our horrogens of words.
26:46Ha-ha-ho.
26:47Oh, God.
26:48Er, I love you for that.
26:50Erm, OK, well, we had Fiend earlier, didn't we?
26:53Yeah.
26:54So I'm going to tell you about a Fiend.
26:56Erm, and you might think looking at it looks a little bit like friend without the R's.
27:01You might wonder, given that they have two very opposite meanings, whether there is some
27:05connection there.
27:06Erm, and although they did develop independently from two very different bases, both of them
27:11Germanic, so brought to us by the Germanic invaders a long time ago, they were actually paired
27:17opposite.
27:18So much as we have friend or foe nowadays, we used to have friend or fiend.
27:22So friend goes back to a root meaning, erm, to love.
27:26Er, it's related to free and, er, a lovely stable, erm, in English.
27:31Fiend, on the other hand, developed from an old English word, from German, erm, theion
27:36meaning to hate, and it was used to refer to an enemy.
27:39That was what a fiend was originally.
27:41Erm, and then it came to be an enemy of humans, an enemy of God, and then to the devil,
27:47erm, himself.
27:48Erm, and, and that is where fiend began to take off in that direction, erm, both sort
27:53of, you know, really sort of grim evil, but also into more kind of supernatural realms,
27:58erm, as well.
27:59But we do still, erm, hold on to kind of slightly friendlier versions of fiend,
28:05cos you might say that he's a golf fiend, er, somebody who's obsessive about it,
28:09or you might say, I'm a fiend for ice cream, erm, that kind of thing.
28:12Wonderful.
28:13APPLAUSE
28:14Fantastic.
28:17Right, four rounds left of today's countdown, just 18 points in it.
28:21There's been toil and there's been trouble for David and Liv.
28:25And everything's still up in the air. Liv, your letters.
28:28A consonant, please.
28:29Thank you, Liv.

29:38Brilliant. Well, it's time to do that.
29:41Surely nothing, though. But there is. Yes.
29:44There's an eight. I'm going to try and pronounce it.
29:48N-double-A-R-T-I-T-J-I-E.
29:53So not pronounce it, more just spell it and you failed.
29:56And by pronounce, I mean spelling correctly.
