00:31Hello, everybody. Wednesday afternoon and down here on planet Earth, it's time for another episode of Countdown.
00:36And no matter what your day's like, hopefully for the next 45 minutes or so, everything will feel all right with the world.
00:42Hi, Rach.
00:43Hi, Colin.
00:44As you might guess, World Space Week this week, so it's a celebration of all things space and science and technology.
00:51And I don't know whether you read over the summer, but a certain company launched their first proper tourist space flight.
00:58How much do you think seats were on the first tourist space flight?
01:04I mean, something of a million, half a mil.
01:07Yeah, a bit less, but still, I mean, a quarter of a million, quarter of a million.
01:12Half price, bargain.
01:13Exactly. What price would it need to be for you to say, oh, I'd think about it? Because the idea is that you do the more, like everything, the price comes down.
01:23I think at the moment I would probably pay $250,000 not to have to do it.
01:30Doesn't interest you?
01:30I'm in that camp. I don't want to do it. I'm like, I like my feet on the ground. I think I've heard it described as a mixture of, you know, agoraphobia and claustrophobia at the same time.
01:38And I'm quite happy on earth. Thank you.
01:41Well, listen, if we get time a little bit later, there was actually a competition to go up on that, to go up for free.
01:45And the story behind it's amazing. But if we get a bit of time later, we'll talk about that.
01:50But we've got to head over to Mission Control. They've waited long enough. Ready for liftoff, as always, our G of the D, Susie Dent.
01:57And back with us again, a star of many a decade, it's Gloria Honeyford.
02:01Many a decade as well. Actually, see, I would quite like to go in space.
02:05Yeah?
02:05And I thought, Richard Branson used to say that he would take his mum up, and sadly his mum passed away, so I thought that I could be the substitute.
02:12So if he decides, I mean, who knows? But it'd have to be a press trip. I wouldn't pay to go up.
02:17But you put it out there on national TV now, so you never know.
02:20Sir Richard, if you're watching, just think on it.
02:23Well, it's not a first flight for Ben Bazar, is it? He's got seven wins in the bank.
02:27Today's the day he can become our latest octo-champ, Ben.
02:31And I tell you what, if anything, it feels like you're getting better and better.
02:35As I kind of say so, Colin, I'm still very nervous, but I'm still really enjoying it.
02:40Well, listen, talking about cost, it cost us a fortune to make a nameplate for your challenger today.
02:45Look at that. David Whittington Bradley from Loistoft. How are you doing, sir?
02:49I'm doing very well, thank you.
02:51Well, we went through all that effort, all those letters. It's not even his name.
02:55So, this is brilliant. I love this. Did you choose David? Tell me the story.
02:59No, my father, when he registered my birth, he'd like to have a drink.
03:06And his name was Ronald James Bradley. And for all my life, I've been called David.
03:13Then, because I'd been adopted, and when I got my original birth certificate, we found that my actual, on my birth certificate, it says Ronald David Bradley.
03:22And then I got married to Stephanie, and now I'm David Whittington Bradley.
03:28That's fantastic. Well, listen, your name's there in lights. Let's see how you get on.
03:33Good luck to David and Ronald and Ben.
03:39This is the moment, the last time you're going to have to hold your nerve. Ben Bazzard, first letters.
03:45Good afternoon, Rachel.

04:56He's going to risk an eight. Ben?
04:59Caveman. David, what's the eight?
05:01It's actually a seven. Oh, no.
05:02Oh, no, early nerves. What was it, I didn't try?
05:05Faceman. Faceman.
05:07Now, do not let down fans of the A-team here, Susie.
05:10Please tell me Faceman is in there.
05:12Well, it's in the dictionary, but with a hyphen.
05:14Oh, my goodness. Yes, I know.
05:17I don't know if that's a relief or not, but, yeah,
05:20Caveman, very good for seven.
05:21And, Ben, you were looking at my page again.
05:24Caveman, I had.
05:25That's it. Nothing else?

06:42We'll find out, Ben.
06:43I've only got a seven.
06:44And the seven is?
06:45Leotard.
06:46Now, let's see if it's an eight this time.
06:48Idolater.
06:49Well done.
06:50Very well.
06:51Yes!
06:56So that's fantastic, and I'm assuming that's as good as it gets.
06:59That's as good as we have to.
07:00Wow.
07:01Well done.
07:02It's going to be an eventful day.
07:04Ben, the mass teacher, happy to get back to the numbers.

07:11Thank you, Ben.

08:31who's a point behind as he tries to become an octo-champ today.
08:34David, let's see if you can apply some more pressure.
08:36The first tea time teaser is brought to you by the Royal Egg.

10:00David?
10:00Six.
10:01And Ben?
10:04I'll stick with a seven, then.

10:11And what was the eight or nine?
10:13Chumpers for eight.
10:14Chumpers for eight.
10:15Chumpers for your teeth, yeah, they are in the dictionary.
10:17But I thought you were going to say pouchers, which aren't in,
10:20so I'm glad you didn't say that.
10:21But, yeah, chumpers would have given you an eight.
10:23There you go, Gloria.
10:24We've got a six, a seven and an eight there.
10:26There you go.
10:27That's everything.
10:28Couldn't do any better.
10:29Yeah.
10:30You normally do better than that.
10:31Oh, yeah, no, I was with chumpers.
10:33Love that word.
10:34Well pointed out, Gloria.
10:35We expected more from Susie.
10:36I didn't want to say it.
10:38I didn't want to say it.

11:36T.
11:36Well, odds are this will be fairly straightforward. Ben? Seven. Yeah. And David? Seven. Yes,
11:46the word is? Painter. And did you go painter or painted? No, I painter. Painter as well.
11:52Let's have a look. Absolutely. Yeah. We were all painting during that round. All painted.
12:01I don't think I don't think we could draw a different picture here. I can get to a note with another good
12:09old countdown word. Dipteran. Brilliant. Dipteran. An insect from the diptera order. So flies,
12:15essentially. Yeah. Well done. No flies on you. And you've redeemed yourself there, Susie,
12:20in glorious eyes. My expectation was superseded that. 31 25. David, it's time for your numbers.
12:30Two large and four small, please. Thank you, David. Two large, four little. Coming up for
12:35you. And the four small ones. Six, seven, eight, two. And the big ones, 75 and 25. And nothing

13:2950. Add to...
13:3052. Times 8.
13:32Simple as that. 416. Yeah.
13:34APPLAUSE
13:37Still very close, just 16 points in it.
13:39As we chat with Gloria Honeyford again,
13:41and I believe you're taking us on a royal trip to Kensington Palace.
13:44Well, I am, because, you know, in this business,
13:47we're very lucky sometimes to be invited along
13:49to a press conference or some event.
13:53And in this case, it was Kensington Palace
13:56and Princess Diana was alive then.
13:59And I think we all absolutely loved her.
14:01And I couldn't believe that I was going along
14:03to see her up close and personal.
14:05So, I came in one of those tote bags, you know,
14:07that hold everything. Huge bag.
14:09And I was glad to be in Kensington Palace.
14:11So, as I went in, there was a windowsill over here
14:14and I threw the tote bag over there, out of the way.
14:16Wormed my way forward so that I had a view.
14:19I was as close as this.
14:21And I was so pleased that I'd been brazen enough
14:23to actually worm my way through.
14:25And so, she started her speech.
14:28And we were listening for just 30 seconds or so
14:31when a phone began to ring.
14:33And we were all looking at each other to say,
14:35why would anybody have their phone on?
14:38I mean, who is that? And sort of, what is that?
14:41And, of course, during the query, I thought, it's mine.
14:44It's over in that bag on that windowsill.
14:48But I still continue to go, isn't that awful?
14:51You know, those sort of whispered things.
14:53I mean, it's ridiculous.
14:54And when the speech was over, I whirmed my way back out again,
14:58grabbed the bag and ran like blazes.
15:01I was so embarrassed.
15:03You never admitted up...
15:04You never owned up to...
15:05Never.
15:06Why would you?
15:07No, the Irish don't own up to anything, so it's fine.
15:10If you can get away with it, you'd get away with it.
15:12Well, I was embarrassed.
15:13But there's another little royal story I was going to tell you.
15:15I was lucky enough to get an OBE for cancer services
15:18because of my daughter Karen.
15:20And, you know, we give money through our foundation
15:23to cancer charities all over the country.
15:26But when I got it from the Queen, so if you shake hands with me,
15:30I automatically do that.
15:32I kind of do that.
15:33Well, when...
15:34I only find this out afterwards,
15:35that when the Queen shakes hands with me,
15:37it's time for you to go.
15:38But anyway, I kept holding on to the hand
15:41and all my family were sort of sitting there thinking,
15:44would she ever let the Queen's hand go?
15:46It was only when I read the paper the next day
15:48that I heard that I'd broken protocol yet again.
15:51What's protocol if it's not to be broken, Gloria?
15:54Thank you very much.
15:59At right 41, 25, Ben, looks like you're up.

21:41I worked it out, but I don't know what it means.
21:43Headward.
21:44Well, literally, in the direction of the head.
21:46So, wherever your head is facing.
21:48Sometimes it's as obvious as that.

24:41You'd be sitting pretty.
24:41What's the word?
24:42Moment.
24:43Aye, champ.
24:44Summoned.
24:45And summoned.
24:46Excellent.
24:47Very nice.
24:47Yes.
24:49We might have an eight in...
24:51D-munt is correct, isn't it?
24:53D-munt.
24:53Yes.
24:54That's brilliant.
24:54Yes.
24:5477, 38.
24:56We'll stay with Sue's origins of words today.
24:58It was doughnuts yesterday.
24:59Doughnuts.
25:00Well, I'm actually just going to feed back to something you mentioned
25:03a few weeks ago, which is how much you love mini-golf.
25:06Mm.
25:07And there's just two things.
25:09I was near a golf course quite recently.
25:12It was a Lynx course, actually.
25:13So two things occurred to me.
25:14One is, why is it called a Lynx course?
25:16I'd never looked that up.
25:18And also, it's quite old-fashioned, I think,
25:21is that you could hear players shouting four when they shot,
25:24if you're going across a footpath, et cetera.
25:26So I'm going to give you those two today.
25:28I'll start with four.
25:29I mean, most of us know four meaning before.
25:32Four, that's a Germanic borrowing.
25:34They have four, V-O-R in German.
25:37So lots of relatives in different languages.
25:40And it simply means something is ahead of you or in front of you.
25:43Foremost, foretold the forerunner, et cetera.
25:46And then in the 18th century, and on for quite a while, actually,
25:50there was a golf term, four caddy.
25:53And a four caddy described a person hired by individual golfers
25:57or by courses to keep track of where each ball was, essentially.
26:03So it saved the golf for time.
26:05I mean, much, in fact, I think in professional tournaments,
26:08you will still hear about the four caddy.
26:10So they would walk ahead of the group.
26:12They'd stand in the area where the balls were most likely to land.
26:15And so it is thought that golfers would shout four caddy
26:19when they teed off in order to warn them that a ball was coming their way.
26:23And that was eventually shortened to four.
26:26It could simply mean a four, as in in front of me.
26:29The ball is now there, so watch out.
26:31But, yeah, I didn't know about the four caddy.
26:33And as I say, I think they still exist.
26:35But links is a lovely one.
26:36So a links golf course is one, obviously, by the sea, usually.
26:39And it goes back to an old English word, clink, with an H in front of it,
26:44which meant rising ground.
26:46And it was eventually transferred over to gently undulating, sandy ground
26:50that was then covered with turf, but that you would find by the seashore.
26:58Well, Ben, Bazard's Seven Winds just has to avoid the water in the bunkers
27:03to get over the line.
27:04But stranger things have happened.
27:05David, don't give up hope.
27:06Let's get more letters.
27:07A vowel, please.
27:09Thank you, David.

28:28And with that, Ben, a 39-point lead.
28:32Even if David got a maximum, got the numbers and got the conundrum,
28:36you'd still lose by a point.

30:00David.
30:01A seven.
30:02Darn him, David. What's the seven?
30:04Er, repaint.
30:05We just have to sit back and all.
30:07Parenting.
30:08Parenting.
30:09Well done.
30:13It's good that he took his food off the gas after becoming an octo-champ.
30:16LAUGHTER
30:17Already over the century, yet again, with two rounds still to go.
30:22Any other nines?
30:24No.
30:25No, in a word.
30:26Parenting is good enough.
30:28Right, last numbers round.
30:30David, let's do it, my friend.
30:32Er, two large and four small, please, Rachel.
30:35Thank you, David.
30:35Two big ones, four.
30:37Let'll finish off the day with the numbers.
30:39And they are one, six, four, two.
30:44And the large one's 25 and 50.
30:47And your target to reach with them, 196.
30:50Another low one, 196.
30:52Last numbers.
30:53.
30:53.
31:24This will be fairly straightforward. David?
31:27196.
31:28And Ben?
31:29196.
31:30And David, it's your honour.
31:3150 times 4.
31:3350 times 4, 200.
31:356 minus 2.
31:36Here's another 4.
31:37And take that away.
31:39Lots of ways for this one.
31:41Well, you never know with our maths teacher.
31:42Did you do it the same way?
31:43I did it slightly different.
31:4450 subtract 1.
31:4649.
31:46And multiply that by 4.
31:48More often than not, we've done it the same way.
31:50196.
31:50Yes.
31:51APPLAUSE
31:52Well, what's left to be said?
31:561-11 for Ben.
31:58Teapot going home with him.
31:59He'll be back, of course, for the end of season finale.
32:02But 1-2-1 would be your highest score of your eight wins.
32:07There's always something on it.
32:08And for you, David, fantastic.
32:10Over half a century already.
32:11See if you can add 10 more points
32:13as we reveal today's Countdown Conundrum.
32:46That is time.
32:48Ben nor David managed it.
32:50Flummoxed faces the whole way around.
32:52And this is where I go to my fail-safe.
32:53I go to Rachel Riley.
32:55But you look flummoxed.
32:57Not sure.
32:58Well, if you've got this at home,
32:59you've beaten the entire Countdown studio,
33:02including the queen of the conundrum,
33:04Rachel Riley,
33:05the brilliant guardian of the dictionary,
33:07Susie Dent.
33:08We don't know.
33:09Let's reveal it.
33:10Oh, for goodness.
33:11Oh, for goodness.
33:13I thought it was going to be a word we had to look up.
33:15And it was aftercare.
33:17Well, there you go.
33:18You just never know.
33:19Good conundrum.
33:20111.54.
33:22David, you just never know.
33:24It's a lottery who you're going to come up against.
33:27And you did your best.
33:28Did you enjoy it?
33:28I did.
33:29Good.
33:30We loved having you.
33:31And we will love having Ben back.
33:33And you are, as it stands now,
33:34the second seed.
33:36Well done, mate.
33:37Thank you for the love.
33:41Gloria, Susie, we'll see you tomorrow.
33:42See you later.
33:43We'll be here.
33:44Brilliant.
33:44There you go.
33:45Hey, Rach, do you remember we were talking about 250,000 to go to space?
33:48Mm-hm.
33:49Just very briefly,
33:50there was two people on that first tourist flight to space
33:53who won basically a space lottery.
33:55The tickets were $2.
33:56The story's brilliant because young Anna
33:59travelled from Antigua to study in Scotland.
34:03She's 18 years old.
34:04She was working in a Mexican restaurant,
34:07pay her rent,
34:07gets her university.
34:09Her mum, Keisha,
34:10was flying over to visit her in Scotland
34:12and bought a $2 ticket.
34:14Anna's goal is to work for NASA.
34:18At 18, she got to go to space
34:19because her mum bought a ticket on the way over.
34:21It's amazing, isn't it?
34:22Proper Willy Wonka stuff there.
34:24It's totally Willy Wonka.
34:25That's why you love it so much.
34:26Yes, I didn't realise.
34:28Brilliant.
34:28Right, the gates open again tomorrow.
34:30Same time, same place.
34:31Rachel, Susie and I will be here.
