00:30Dallas has held its own versus the best teams in the NBA.
00:34The Mavericks are going to win it, though.
00:36Dallas wins it.
00:38The Mavericks look to cap off their gauntlet week tonight
00:40with a win against Kevin Durant and the Rockets.
00:46Second matchup this season between the Mavericks and the Rockets
00:49coming your way tonight on Mavs TV.
00:51Welcome to our coverage from American Airlines Center.
00:54Tonight for the Mavericks, good news on the second night of a back-to-back.
00:57Anthony Davis will be playing, looking to bounce back from his game
01:00against the Thunder last night.
01:02And the Mavericks welcome back P.J. Washington,
01:04who was hurt one week ago during the layup line in Los Angeles.
01:10Hi there, everyone.
01:11With Devin Harris, I'm Mark Folliwell.
01:12Great to have you tuned in.
01:13The Mavericks in the midst of what looks like their toughest set
01:16of back-to-back games this year.
01:18Last night, Oklahoma City got drilled.
01:20That's happened to a lot of teams.
01:21Tonight, the Houston Rockets.
01:22We've seen Dallas beat a couple of really good teams this week,
01:25Denver and Miami, and they'll always be in position to beat good teams, Devin,
01:29if they can continue this resurgence in three-point shooting
01:32that we've seen over the last few games.
01:34Yeah, to start the season, they knew when they put this new offense in
01:36it was going to take a little bit of time to gel.
01:38We've seen those struggles throughout the first part of this season.
01:41But obviously, in the last three games, we've seen an uptick in three-point shooting.
01:44Part of that has to do with Anthony Davis returning
01:46and the gravity that he brings to the offense.
01:48But more so, J. Gitt talked about the guys are getting more comfortable
01:51knowing where those shots are coming from.
01:53They're gaining confidence.
01:54And typically, when you shoot those with confidence, you tend to make more.
01:57Now, we're going to compete with this high offense that Houston has.
02:00We're going to need to make three-point shots, and hopefully this trend continues.
02:03Well, for Houston, when you look at this team,
02:05they do have a very good offense and defense.
02:07So you've got to have a lot of good two-way players.
02:10And one of their best, who's playing very well as of late, is Hummin Thompson.
02:14Yeah, with the loss of Fred VanVleet in the point guard position,
02:16they were very confident they could turn it over to this young man.
02:19And why are they confident?
02:20Because of the structure of the team.
02:21The shooting that they provide allows him to play at his best,
02:24and that's getting downhill in open space.
02:26He's athletic enough. He's worked hard enough.
02:28That's not even talking about the defense that he brings to the table.
02:31So we want to compete with this team, obviously keeping him out of the paint,
02:34but also defending those three-point shooters is going to be major.
02:37But we see some high athletic plays from this guy, and he's playing at a high level.
02:40Yes, including 31 points, a season high in their win over Phoenix last night.
02:43And the Paycom Player Insights show that in the last seven games,
02:47Hummin Thompson is about 20 points a game, over 52% for the floor,
02:51over 8.5 rebounds, and nearly 5 assists per game.
02:54Tonight, it's the Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets.
02:57P.J. Washington is coming back, but you've still got Najee Marshall in the starting lineup.
03:02He's been great in the starting lineup over the last four games,
03:04and we'll have more on that right after this.
03:06Stay tuned.
03:07Mavericks basketball on Mavs TV is brought to you by Home Zone Furniture.
03:30Welcome to Dallas.
03:31It's a Lone Star State matchup tonight.
03:33The Mavs and the Rockets here on Mavs TV.
03:35Great to have you tuned in.
03:36P.J. Washington returns from a four-game absence tonight.
03:39While he's been out, Najee Marshall has been starting and playing really well, Devin.
03:43Yeah, and what he brings to the court every night doesn't change,
03:46whether he's starting or coming off the bench.
03:48The knife, as his nickname, has been on full display.
03:51Used him a lot of different ways, both offensively and defensively.
03:54Some of those things we talked about, saw him starting on Jokic one night.
03:57But that's how versatile he is.
03:59And having a guy that's so adaptable to be able to start or come off the bench
04:02is a luxury for this Mavs team.
04:04It is a luxury, and he's in the driver's seat.
04:06Brought to you by your North Texas Chevy dealers.
04:08So in these last four games, his numbers look a lot like what he was doing late last year.
04:12Nearly 16 points a game, over five boards.
04:15And he's a facilitator as well, with nearly four assists per game.
04:18He's averaging nine and a half paint points.
04:20And that couples nicely with the fact that he's shooting over 63% from the floor
04:25in these last four games.
04:27Tonight it's the Dallas Mavericks and the Houston Rockets.
04:30Skin joins us next, and the lineup's in the tip-off.
04:33We'll be right after this, here on Mavs TV.
04:40Welcome to Mavericks basketball.
04:42Coverage tonight on KFAA in Dallas-Fort Worth, and, of course, streaming on Mavs TV.
04:47Great to have you tuned in for the Mavs and Rockets,
04:50meeting for their second time this year.
04:53Houston won in early November on their home floor.
04:55The starting lineups are brought to you by Home Zone Furniture.
04:58We're just under 90 seconds away from getting tonight's game started.
05:02Houston will go with the lineup of Amin Thompson and Josh Akoki in the backcourt.
05:06With both Alperin Shingun and Steven Adams unavailable tonight,
05:09Clint Capella starts at center.
05:12Jabari Smith, Jr., and he of now 31,000 points in the NBA.
05:16Kevin Durant are the starting forwards for the Rockets.
05:19P.J. Washington's back, along with Anthony Davis, Cooper Flagg, Ryan Nimhardt,
05:22and Najee Marshall for Dallas.
05:24And speaking of Anthony Davis and P.J. Washington, more with Jeff Skinner Wade on those two.
05:29Yeah, let's talk about those guys.
05:30It's great to see those names in the lineup.
05:32Obviously, with P.J. returning after that freak ankle turn and warm-ups at the Clipper game last week,
05:38and with Anthony Davis being in the starting lineup at center,
05:41that means that he has now graduated back to being able to play in back-to-back games.
05:46This will only be his second time to do it this year.
05:48It did happen in that stretch of first five games before he sustained the calf strain earlier in the year.
05:53But the fact that he was able to play last night and play tonight
05:56bodes really well for the Mavericks moving forward,
05:58especially on a night where, once again, Gafford and Lively are unavailable.
06:02So nice to have the starting four and five back in the lineup together,
06:06Anthony Davis and P.J. Washington Jr.
06:08Yeah, P.J. out the last four weeks.
06:10He got hurt minutes before tip-off of the Clipper game one week ago tonight
06:15and was unable to play due to that sprained right ankle.
06:18And Devin for Anthony Davis, obviously looking for a bounce-back game tonight
06:22after a 2.1 of 9 shooting performance.
06:26Obviously, a major outlier when you look at the nearly 800 games of Davis' career
06:32to have a performance like he had last night.
06:34But Oklahoma City, obviously, a very, very accomplished defensive outcome.
06:38Well, you said it.
06:39I mean, obviously, we talk about playing the champs.
06:41They know how to attack defensive schemes.
06:44And with those traps and taking Anthony Davis away, they did not respond well.
06:48Jay Kidd talked about his pregame presser.
06:50They're going to have to get better at handling those situations.
06:52And tonight's going to be another night where they're going to look to take him away
06:55and other guys got to step up and be ready to attack the offense on the weak side.
06:59Well, that 132-111 loss to the Thunder last night ended Dallas' three-game winning streak.
07:05Meanwhile, Houston won by 19 points, 117-98 on their home floor against the Phoenix Suns.
07:11In the paint, here's Davis that comes up short against Clint Capella.
07:15Capella last night had a season-high four blocked shots.
07:18There is a clock malfunction, so we stopped playing very early in the game to get that sorted out.
07:25Now the shot clock reads as it should.
07:2822 seconds.
07:29It was sitting on 3.7.
07:34See, Imei Yudoka, the coach of the Rockets.
07:37This team is 15-5, including 8-3 on the road.
07:42Mavs 8-16, 5-9 at home.
07:45Referees still don't have everything ironed out with the clock just yet.
07:51So that gives us a chance for this.
07:53Yeah, let's take a look at the Volvo performance plan.
07:55Obviously, they play a really big lineup, so you've got to be willing and able to wrestle those monsters inside.
08:02And board games, you've got to come up with rebounds.
08:04You can't play with pace unless you rebound the basketball.
08:06I feel like we keep saying different ways to rebound the basketball because it's so important for this team and how they want to play.
08:12Well, something about James Capers being in the building means there's going to be a clock malfunction because this happened in Mexico City
08:19whenever he was the crew chief for the Mavericks Pistons game.
08:24And the game didn't start until about 10 minutes after the scheduled time because of a problem with the clock.
08:30And it worked for one possession at least tonight.
08:34And for whatever reason, it's frozen at 11.39.
08:40Whenever you see guys back there unplugging stuff and trying to plug stuff back.
08:43They're just rebooting the clock.
08:44Yeah.
08:45Just rebooting it.
08:46All right.
08:46We'll see how this works out.
08:48They're just turning it off and on.
08:50That's what you've got to do.
08:51That's how you fix things.
08:52Yeah.
08:53That's the first thing you do.
08:54You don't just smash the top of it with your fist.
08:58No.
08:59That's how you fix an old TV.
09:00Okay.
09:01Yeah.
09:01That's how you got the reception to be a little bit better with your rabbit ears antenna.
09:05Well, you had a remote control with one button that cycled through all 13 channels that were available.
09:11Well, it looks like it's all taken care of.
09:13Houston's first time on offense in the game.
09:18Throwing into the frontcourt, Jabari Smith, Jr.
09:21P.J.'s got the defensive assignment against KD to start out.
09:26Clint Capella's only made one career three, so he's not much of a threat to shoot out there.
09:30But Kevin Durant is a threat to shoot from anywhere.
09:33He finds a hole in Clint Capella.
09:34And a challenge put in.
09:36Another opportunity.
09:37Missed by Capella, but stays after it.
09:38And ultimately, on his third shot, scores.
09:41Rebounding is going to be an issue.
09:43And obviously not without Shingun, Stephen Adams, but Capella is just as effective.
09:49You see Cooper hit the three.
09:50Yes, we do see Cooper hit the three.
09:52The first Dallas points of the game.
09:54And you'll love to see it any time that the three ball is on target for Flagg.
10:04Durant with it for Houston.
10:06Durant 16th in the league in scoring just over 25 points per game.
10:10It was a rebound, but then a takeaway.
10:13Okoge took it from P.J. Washington.
10:15And then P.J. turned the tables.
10:17He swiped it right back.
10:19Ryan Nembhardt getting the ball up.
10:22And Flagg on the side of the floor where he just made a three-pointer.
10:25Coop guarded by Jabari Smith, Jr.
10:26Two-man game with Flagg at A.D.
10:31And driving left to scoop the hoop.
10:33No good.
10:34It's A.D. on the offensive glass.
10:35And he scores against Capella.
10:38That's something we want to see a lot more as the season progresses.
10:41Them developing that chemistry.
10:43And I'm talking about Flagg and Davis running the pick and roll.
10:49Durant down the lane.
10:50That play was all about Cooper Flagg.
11:03When he cut through, took the defender with him
11:05and gave Najee a lane where nobody could recover.
11:08Ryan read it perfectly.
11:10Well, you see why Marshall is shooting 63% for the floor in the last four games.
11:15Getting a lot of easy opportunities like that.
11:17Thompson tricked him, but then ends up rimming out the shots.
11:23Looks like Elman Thompson was going to pass.
11:25Ended up taking the floater.
11:26Here's Ryan Nembhardt going all the way and attacking and scoring.
11:30He was able to get it up there before Josh Akogi could challenge it.
11:34Nice change of pace.
11:36Always under control.
11:40Capella started the scoring tonight for Houston.
11:42Since then, it's a 9-0 run for Dallas.
11:44And that comes to an end on the shot by Kevin Durant.
11:47That's how he got 31,000.
11:49I mean, it just makes it look so simple out there.
11:51Scoring machine.
11:54At 28 last night against Phoenix.
11:56He just needed four going into that game to surpass 31,000 for his career.
12:01Ryan Nembhardt drains another shot.
12:04Mid-range jumper.
12:05He scored at the basket a moment ago.
12:07He gets a pretty good arc on the shot.
12:09He's got to at that size.
12:10Five straight starts for Nembhardt, averaging 14 points and over seven assists a game.
12:17Here is KD.
12:19Out front, cross it over, down the lane against P.J.
12:21Tough shot, pulls in.
12:26Durant's also five boards and four assists per game.
12:28Here is Davis in the paint.
12:32And he got the two right back for the Mavs.
12:33He pushed the lead back to seven points.
12:39Mavs tied for the most back-to-backs played in the NBA going into action tonight.
12:43Dallas two and three so far this year.
12:45The second night of a back-to-back.
12:46Smith screening.
12:50Thompson shooting.
12:52Only 22% from distance.
12:54The three was off, but the Mavericks unable to corral the rebound.
12:57It's out of bounds to the Rockets.
12:59It's been hard in transition.
13:00Just a simple search dribble, but I love that off-the-wrong-leg layup.
13:06And obviously, he's getting two feet in the paint, breathing the defense,
13:09and got a nice mid-range shot to go as well.
13:12Ball into Durant.
13:16A baseline throw in with 14 to shoot.
13:18Four minutes into the game.
13:20Here's a paint catch by Capella.
13:21Too strong on the hook shot.
13:24Mavs control the rebound.
13:27Koup with the attack over Jabari Smith, Jr.
13:29And he scores against another long-rangey defender
13:33that the opposition is throwing at him.
13:35It doesn't deter Koup from driving and scoring.
13:38When the guy reaches, you know he's off balance.
13:40That's a good time to pull up.
13:42Akoge finds Smith.
13:461-3 by Jabari Smith, Jr.
13:48No good.
13:48Akoge, though, with the putback after Capella tipped in his direction.
13:57Here's an attack by AD.
13:59And that's a little bit of the game.
14:00He had their first 10 shots.
14:03And that skin, in case you're not sure, is 80%.
14:06I was going to say it was at least 60.
14:09Jabari Smith, Jr.
14:10No good.
14:10And a rebound by Nembhardt, but then taken out of his hands by Josh Akoge.
14:15And that's officially not a change of possession.
14:17So it was only 14 on the reset.
14:19Lost ball, KD.
14:20On the floor.
14:21Marshall could pick it up.
14:23So now Akoge's got it.
14:24Houston has a chance.
14:26Here.
14:26And the shot clock runs out.
14:27There still was never a change of possession.
14:30And that's it.
14:31Turnover.
14:33And a timeout on the floor with 6.54 left in the first quarter.
14:37And everyone getting involved early, including Anthony Davis.
14:40Already four more points than he had the whole game last night.
14:43There's two of us.
14:44Mavericks basketball is presented by the all-new Alexa Plus.
14:47Dallas has made seven straight shots.
14:51They lead 17-8 with a little over five minutes played in the game.
14:57Cooper Blacks made some shots in that stretch of making seven in a row for Dallas.
15:01And before tonight's game, Coop was presented with his Key of Westview Conference Rookie of the Month award
15:07for October and November.
15:0920 games in late October and throughout the month of November.
15:14Saw flag post numbers of nearly 17 points per game.
15:18Con Knippel won the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month.
15:22His Duke teammate and roommate.
15:25About 17 points per game.
15:2646% shooting.
15:28Over 6.5 rebounds.
15:293.5 assists.
15:30The numbers in the first 20 games for Coop.
15:31Nice pass, Nembhard.
15:32Nice move, Davis.
15:34Both to spin away from the defender and make the catch and then score.
15:37Really nice pass by Nembhard, too.
15:40Anticipation.
15:41Guys on the same page.
15:43Max Christie started the last 21 games.
15:45But Christie is coming in off the bench tonight with P.J. Washington back from the last four games.
15:51It kept Najee Marshall in the starting lineup.
15:54Christie subbed at the timeout.
15:55KD just scored for Houston.
16:01Cutting in from the weak side.
16:02The catch is with Christie.
16:05Unable to do anything with it.
16:06By the way, Aaron Holliday is gone in the game now for the Rockets.
16:10The string of eight straight made field goals ends for Dallas on the perimeter jumper by Anthony Davis going off the iron and out of bounds.
16:18And here's Reed Shepard.
16:20He subs in for Ahmed Thompson.
16:21What a really weird stretch in that the Mavericks have a tough opponent tonight, second night of a back-to-back after a tough week, and then don't play again until next Friday.
16:30They'll play the Brooklyn Nets here in one of the added regular season games because the Mavericks did not advance to the knockout stage of the NBA Cup.
16:39Durant again, and KD, four of six, eight points to start the game.
16:44He's had consistent looks, and we've seen the double-team.
16:47They posted him up in that mid-range area.
16:50We were able just to rise up over smaller defenders.
16:54And off between.
16:55Davidson Nimhart.
16:57Nimhart drives.
16:58Marshall in the corner.
17:00Reed Shepard with the rebound.
17:02Aaron Holliday sidesteps a defender and hits a three-pointer.
17:09Holliday's been playing good basketball lately, fellas.
17:11Last ten games.
17:13That's broken up and out of bounds off the Rockets.
17:15Last ten games for Aaron Holliday.
17:17Seven of them in double figures.
17:19Now averaging 11 points per game.
17:22And he went three for three for the four last night against the Suns.
17:27Challenging this.
17:29Yes, that is what appears is going to happen.
17:32But Holliday made the three, and then we've got an out-of-bounds play
17:35that looks like it's being challenged.
17:36Back after this.
17:38Within the game, the best defensive rating in the Western Conference
17:42is Oklahoma City, and they have a prodigious lead over Houston
17:46for not only the best defensive rating in the West,
17:48but the best in the NBA.
17:50Meanwhile, Golden State is third in the West,
17:52and Dallas is fourth in the West.
17:54Their defensive rating is seventh overall in the NBA.
17:58Okay, so we just had ourselves a coach's challenge.
18:04Now, at first glance, it looked like the ball was definitely out-of-bounds
18:06off Anthony Davis, which, technically speaking, it was.
18:10However, given the rule that was instituted last season,
18:13referees can look for approximate foul to the play,
18:16and the crew chief, James Capers, along with John Butler
18:19and Nate Kearley, saw approximate foul
18:21and called one on Clint Capella.
18:23Unsuccessful challenge.
18:26How about that?
18:28And they lose it for the remainder of the game.
18:30Brandon Williams in the game, along with Dwight Powell
18:32during the second timeout of the first quarter.
18:38Reed Shepard leading through the defense, misses the pull-up,
18:41and Coop grabs the defensive rebound.
18:44You guys know how much I like to see him grab defensive rebounds
18:47and then run.
18:48He doesn't necessarily run, but he got a shot up and hit it.
18:52Pretty little turnaround made by Coop,
18:54attacking a smaller defender.
18:56Somebody get that baby out the street.
18:58Somebody get him out the street.
19:01Toddler alert.
19:02Pass to Capella, moves it along to KD.
19:09Durant working baseline.
19:11Wow.
19:12Durant is third in the league in mid-range shots,
19:15defined as anything between the paint and the three-point line.
19:18He takes about six of those per game.
19:21Seems like he's taken quite a few of them
19:23amongst these seven shot attempts already,
19:26of which he's made five.
19:28And he got Coop on a three-for-four start in this game.
19:30Fellers, just simple play.
19:33Taking his time, recognizing he can rise up,
19:37goes away from the defense,
19:39seeing a little fade, nice little touch.
19:43P.J. Washington back.
19:45Marshall goes out of the game.
19:47Seven points already for Keefe.
19:49Push at the jumper from the top of the key,
19:51and Capella secures the rebound.
19:54Capella back with Houston.
19:56He spent the first six years in his career,
19:58then went to it one of the five seasons,
19:59and now Durant drains a three.
20:01I'm sorry, we've got to start sending some double teams his way.
20:04We can't just let him play one-on-one.
20:05I mean, get the ball out of his hands.
20:08Jayshon Tate is in the game.
20:11He's defending Coop right now.
20:13Durant's got 13 points already in this game.
20:16And that is Nate Kearly calling the foul on Dwight Powell, offensive foul.
20:23Rise Hesse is a big part of his bag,
20:27and he doesn't see any hand up or really anybody get to his space.
20:31He has the ability to just rise up at any point in time
20:33and make it look easy.
20:34From deep, wherever.
20:37Thought it was interesting to way Jason Kidd characterized it.
20:40He was asked about Kevin Durant before the game.
20:42He said he's perfected his practice.
20:46He scored over 31,000 points.
20:48That's probably a pretty good thing to say about someone.
20:51Aaron Holiday with the pass.
20:52A little spin by Jayshon Tate,
20:54and then an aggressive drive by Reed Shepard.
20:57Not only did he get there,
20:58but he throws it down and gives the Rockets the lead.
21:01And he smiled after doing it.
21:04That's a 12-2 Houston run.
21:06The last two points emphatically from Reed Shepard.
21:12Surrounded by shooters, you're scrambling.
21:15This creates a gap there,
21:16and everybody's worried about getting until three-point shooters.
21:19Lane opens up, and I'm sorry.
21:21I was unaware.
21:23Sorry, Reed Shepard.
21:24I'm familiar with your game.
21:25I'm familiar with your hops.
21:26I thought you were a young Kyle Macy.
21:28I didn't know you had some jumping in the bag, too.
21:30He wants to see the ball go in,
21:32because over the last six games,
21:33the three-point number is down.
21:3533% in the last six games.
21:37He's shooting 44% on threes for the year,
21:40even with that six-game fly.
21:43D'Angelo Russell is in the game for Dallas.
21:45Javar Smith, Jr. lines up the three from out front.
21:47Christie with the rebound for the mound.
21:51Brandon Williams keeps a live dribble into the case.
21:54Silver Aaron Holliday and the Mavericks seesaw back in front.
21:58You get that speed and you're still faced up,
22:00you know exactly where you are.
22:02Easy to hit that little pullback.
22:05Williams is averaging just over 10 points
22:08and just over four assists a game this year.
22:0921 minutes per contest.
22:12There's a double team on Durant.
22:14Shepard moved it quickly.
22:15Hard closeout by Russell.
22:17Sidestepping the closeout.
22:18Holliday missed.
22:20Washington quicker than Javarie Smith, Jr. to the rebound.
22:24Max Christie in transition.
22:27Got it right back.
22:29Thinking three.
22:30Shepard forces him to drive it.
22:31He lost it on the spin move.
22:32Jayshon Tate to Javarie Smith, Jr.
22:36Transition basket.
22:39Trove that last one into a crowd.
22:42Got to keep that spacing out there.
22:45Smith averaging 15 points per game.
22:48And that's his first two tonight.
22:50Had missed his first three shots.
22:53Last two minutes of the first quarter.
22:55An attack here by Russell.
22:56Swag the foul.
22:56But it's not in the act of shooting.
23:04The foul was on Javarie Smith, Jr.
23:07Take a look at the gather.
23:09The foul looks like it's before the game.
23:10It does look like it's before the game.
23:11That second hand comes in.
23:18Referees tonight.
23:19James Capers, John Butler, and Nate Kearley.
23:21This is just his fifth game.
23:23He is a non-staff pitcher.
23:25A G-League and college official.
23:29Some non-staff officials get a handful of games every season.
23:33And Nate is one of those from Garden City, Kansas.
23:37So the Mavs have not committed a defensive foul yet.
23:40And they're in the bonus.
23:43We have 15 foul skin on the Rockets.
23:47There's Brandon Williams on the free throw line.
23:49Hey, Mavs fans.
23:57DraftKings Pick 6 is now available in Texas.
24:00And you can make picks live once games have tipped off.
24:03Download the DraftKings Pick 6 app now and sign up with code Mavs.
24:07Didn't they get Dwight Powell for a moving screen down?
24:10They did.
24:11They did.
24:11Yes.
24:11That's offensive foul.
24:12Yeah, offensive foul.
24:13No defensive foul.
24:15No team foul.
24:15Yeah.
24:16So they'll have one to give here in the last two minutes.
24:19Lawrence, it's out.
24:21That offensive foul on Powell is the only foul foul.
24:23Oh, that's an offensive foul right there, too.
24:25Lord have mercy.
24:26J. Sean Tate.
24:28Just second personal.
24:30Dallas ball.
24:31Playing with an edge.
24:32The 30-year-old from Toledo, Ohio.
24:35Played at Ohio State.
24:36A year in Belgium and a year in Australia.
24:38Coming to the Rockets.
24:40The seventh year.
24:45Powell drive off the street.
24:47An explosive thrust to the.
24:49Somehow.
24:51That bounced out of there for B. Will.
24:53Good catch by Tate.
24:56Passed it over to the side to Holiday.
25:00And then a straightaway three is missed.
25:03Off the front.
25:04Go!
25:07Tied at 24.
25:08Nice defensive play made by Ahmed Thompson.
25:11On the Russell pass intended for Dwight Powell.
25:15Smith.
25:17And Houston in front by two in the last minute of the first quarter.
25:22Got a lot of long, dude.
25:24Get in the middle and rise.
25:26Woo!
25:27Williams on the hard drive and pull up.
25:29And that's one that will count.
25:32There was that D-Low jump shot earlier that did not result in a three-point play opportunity.
25:37But this one will for Brandon Williams.
25:39One of those we had a little.
25:41Woo!
25:42Right to the pull up.
25:45Leave him in the dust.
25:47One man's put on the release.
25:48It would hit the nice little pull up.
25:50Reed Shepard picks up a foul, which is his second of the game.
25:54He's the first player for the Rockets in a little bit of foul trouble.
25:5748 seconds left of the first quarter.
26:00And Brandon Williams with a three-point play.
26:02The G-League is such an important part of B-Roll's story.
26:08And the time he spent there and dues that he paid there.
26:11Played in 96 G-League competitive games.
26:15Tonight is his 97th NBA regular season game.
26:19As Ahmed Thompson got to the hole but missed it.
26:21And then Dallas attacks off the defensive rebound.
26:25With that deflection out of bounds of Reed Shepard,
26:27it probably means the two-for-one opportunity is gone.
26:34Josh Akogi in for Reed Shepard for Houston.
26:36All right, now his Allen and his finish is quarter-round.
26:39Here we go.
26:40Let's go, man!
26:43Everybody!
26:45Row in here by D-Low.
26:49Owl with the handoff.
26:51Williams, a three-point play a moment ago.
26:55And he got around Akogi but then a recovery by Akogi to block it.
27:00A lot of action on that.
27:03Dallas has a foul to give here at the end of the first quarter.
27:07Aaron Holiday in his eighth year for the home.
27:10Oh, he had it taken away!
27:12P.J. Washington freaks it down the floor.
27:14He'll score!
27:15Hey, Washington!
27:17Shoot!
27:17Shoot!
27:18Shoot!
27:18Shoot!
27:18Shoot!
27:18Shoot!
27:18Shoot!
27:19Shoot!
27:19Shoot!
27:19Shoot!
27:20He got the cookies.
27:21And the glass of milk at the end when he jammed it!
27:24That's a great way to end a quarter right there, man.
27:28And as a result of us, Amin Thompson hits this, which he almost did.
27:33The Mavericks will tote a three-point lead into the second quarter of the game.
27:39The swipe and the slam for P.J. Washington.
27:42Welcome back to the lineup.
27:44Mavericks, for the ninth time this year, lead after the first quarter of a game.
27:4829-26 is the advantage.
27:49Here's tonight's Baylor-Scott and White-Health pulse check.
27:52First quarter stats in this game.
27:53Mavs are shooting 59% against Houston.
27:57Houston normally allows opponents to shoot 45%, fifth best in the league, field goal defense-wise.
28:0111-10 rebounding advantage for Houston.
28:04That's good.
28:04The Mavericks are only down one in rebounding.
28:06Payne points favor the Mavs.
28:08Turnovers are even-steven at 4.
28:10Jaden Hardy had a season-best 23 last night.
28:14Went 8-for-13 from the floor in 20 minutes of the game against the Thunders.
28:17And Hardy with some run here at the start of the second quarter of Ed Thompson.
28:22That's no good.
28:24Russell a rebound.
28:24Nimhard, Hardy, D'Lo, P.J., A.D.
28:27That's the group on the floor for the Mavs.
28:29And here is big-to-big high-low passing action converted by Dallas as P.J. finds Anthony Davis.
28:38Basketball one-on-one when you show the front on the side flash.
28:42We'll get a high-low executed perfectly.
28:45Anthony Davis has 10.
28:47First Mavs player in double figures.
28:49And it's a takeaway by Nimhard.
28:51He helped out of the double-team against Smith.
28:53Up ahead to D'Lo, and that will fall.
28:55Transition attack for D'Lo, and the Mavericks off the turnover.
29:01Mavs are in front by seven.
29:04Nimhard with the assist.
29:07Elbow chain.
29:08It's good for Reed Shepard.
29:13That ended a 9-0 Dallas run on the basket by Shepard.
29:19That was Nimhard's sixth assist just a moment ago.
29:23That couldn't work.
29:27Had 13 a game earlier this week to win against Miami.
29:31Despite two defenders going for it.
29:33And he caught it.
29:35Oh, wow.
29:35And what a play by Ahmed Thompson.
29:39That is a sensational defensive play made by Thompson.
29:45That is first-team all-defense type effort there.
29:49Meet a guy at the top, pretty much off the vertical, and you catch it.
29:53Whoa!
29:54It's funny you said that, Devin.
29:55Oh, they're going right back at it.
29:57They have to because it's 8-10 to the second left on the shot clock.
30:00I was sitting there thinking about, all right, when's the last time two brothers were on the
30:05all-defensive team?
30:06And we have Brian Sperry sitting with us.
30:10So he'll probably have to look into that.
30:13But now, Asar Thompson, with the way Detroit's playing this year, really he'll get some votes.
30:18I mean, I think they're both first-team all-defensive players the way they go.
30:21And then you look at what Ahmed Thompson's doing lately on offense.
30:24But in that situation, it was the old skip to my loo.
30:27That was not a two-footed jump stop.
30:31Last night, Thompson had 31 a season high.
30:33He had 27 against Dallas earlier this year at the time.
30:37On that game back on November 3rd, that was a season high for him.
30:40The 31 he had last night was just two points away from his career high as a matter of fact.
30:46If hard finds D'Lo.
30:50Davis screens, D'Lo with a tough shot.
30:53And then the rebound is almost booted out of bounds, but going to the floor to keep it in play
30:58was Jabari Smith, Jr.
31:00A triple-up three for Reed Shepard.
31:04He's treating this like it's a summer league game.
31:10And with that, he should back to within two.
31:13It's on the alley, oh!
31:14Oh, no!
31:15A very frightening fall there for Anthony Davis as he was fouled by Ahmed Thompson.
31:22And then in a very vulnerable position when he fouled, when he was fouled, he fell to the floor.
31:28Yeah, scary way, man.
31:33See that contact coming from behind and not able to catch himself.
31:41Glad he was able to bounce up on that one.
31:44Yes, PJ Washington comes back and knocks down a shot for Dallas.
31:48Washington with what they're calling a three-pointer.
31:55Here's Jayshon Tate to answer, and he does.
32:03So now they've corrected that last basket, by the way, for PJ to a two-point basket.
32:08They announced that here in the arena.
32:09He's got a drive here by D'Lo, and D'Lo, as he's very good at doing, underneath the arms of a defender.
32:18Ahmed Thompson called for the foul.
32:19We got two men!
32:21Popped back, but definitely had his foot on the line.
32:26Two fouls now on Ahmed Thompson of the Rockets, and D'Angelo Russell to the free-throw line.
32:35D'Angelo had a couple of games where he was out of the rotation, but he's been back in the mix.
32:39And I really like how he's played these last three games, averaging 10 points, 16 minutes a game,
32:43and shooting 50% for the floor in those three games.
32:48He's always staying ready.
32:49Yeah.
32:49Obviously, the injury problems that this team has had, the name can be called at any point in time,
32:54but can still show that he can, you know, score the basketball at a high clip when given the opportunity.
33:01I think his fit on the bench has been really good when he has gotten extended minutes.
33:04Speaking of having injury problems, you know, you've got Alprin Chingun, Tari Eason, Steven Adams,
33:12and Adams isn't heard, second night of a back-to-back, but you've got that group out of the lineup tonight,
33:16and unavailable for Houston.
33:18Jeff Green, it's just his tenth game.
33:21He's only played 41 minutes this year, but Uncle Jeff is on the floor here in the second quarter of the game.
33:27And he just received that pass out from Capella on the offensive rebound.
33:31Another hoop for Reed Shepard.
33:33He does play like he's at the rec.
33:34Yeah.
33:34Just out there just hooping and ball.
33:36Just scoring.
33:36Yeah.
33:38He's going to the tune of nine points already.
33:41Shepard going into play tonight, and a second year in the league is averaging 13 points a game.
33:46Here's P.J. got a double-team for the back side.
33:49Ball moved to Hardy.
33:50Well, he filled it up last night.
33:53We have 23 in 20 minutes.
33:54Yep.
33:56Seize it high for him.
33:58And this ball's going the other way.
34:00Ahmed Thompson would just call for an offensive foul.
34:02That's three fouls on him.
34:03Number one.
34:04Swinging his elbows around.
34:09The basket by D.J. Washington, about a 38, announcing the two-point match.
34:13It has to change.
34:14Nice break for the Mavs.
34:15He's for his threat.
34:17Hey, back in the corner.
34:18You see what they announced in the arena?
34:18You see the replay there?
34:19They just announced that the P.J.'s shot was a three.
34:22All right.
34:23So the Mavs just pick a point up on the board.
34:2738-36.
34:29Now here is Nippon.
34:30Wow.
34:32Accelerating up the baseline, and then a really acrobatic finish underneath.
34:38Namby is nifty.
34:39Yes, he is.
34:40Yes, he is, Devon.
34:42A little pocket pass attempt here.
34:43K.D. guarded by Cooper Flagg as Cooper gets back into the game.
34:48And just with reckless abandon attacking up the baseline.
34:51Here's Ryan Nembhard.
34:52Talk about how small he is, but you gotta get creative when they talk about finishing over bigs.
34:58And we've seen a lot of wrong leg finishes, quick finishes, slow finishes.
35:03And he's got all of it in his bag.
35:04Thanks to New Balance, fearless approach.
35:06Nembhard the last three games.
35:08You see how good those numbers are.
35:10Over 17 points a game.
35:12Over 68% from the floor.
35:14But the story in games against Denver, Miami, and Oklahoma City is that Ryan Nembhard had 27 assists
35:21and two turnovers.
35:22Incredible.
35:24Really good decision maker.
35:26Takes care of the ball.
35:26Plays at his own pace.
35:30Diamond in the rough day they found.
35:31Two way.
35:32Now, by the way, if I'm the Houston Rockets, I'm telling the refs, okay,
35:37so we didn't get a defensive foul called until the 7.48 minute mark.
35:40Yeah.
35:41The second quarter.
35:42It'd be interesting to kind of watch how that unfolds.
35:44Anthony Davis, the first defensive foul, called against Dallas tonight.
35:50One offensive foul in the first quarter, and that was it.
35:52I think these things tend to balance themselves out at some point throughout the game.
35:56They do, especially if they remind the refs that it's in balance.
36:0127-year-old Josh Jacoby, two for two on the line, 72% on the screen this year.
36:09Duke left open.
36:09They went under the screen.
36:10Three-pointer, long rebound.
36:12Marshall has it.
36:14Knocked to the floor.
36:15Fell on the ball.
36:16That probably didn't feel too terribly good, but he's up to his feet,
36:20and there was a foul called on Clint Capella as well.
36:34Duke to throw in with three team fouls now on Houston here on the second quarter.
36:42Double team on Cooper.
36:43There is a laser over the top of the defense.
36:46A deflection by Smith.
36:47Fell back to Hardy.
36:48Took it inside.
36:49Passed out to Marshall.
36:50Pass to put it up.
36:51Got it off the iron coupe right there, but blocked by Capella.
36:58Some helter-skelter action in that sequence.
37:00And there's Cooper coming up from behind.
37:02Jamari Smith, Jr. with the block.
37:04And Nimhard digs out a loose ball.
37:06It's still free.
37:07Diving on the floor now is Okoge.
37:09Maybe a timeout for Houston.
37:11Yes, there is one.
37:12Boys are getting after it.
37:14Yes, they are.
37:18Nimhard was getting after it.
37:19So was Okoge.
37:21And Cooper flag getting after it here.
37:24Blocking Jabari Smith, Jr.
37:25Houston has the ball, but Dallas has the lead.
37:27Good quarter, Dallas 40, Houston 38 on this Saturday night.
37:34Kevin Durant came into tonight's game with 31,024 points.
37:39He's added 13 already tonight.
37:41And he's on the Lexus leaderboard as we look at the NBA's all-time scoring list.
37:45Last night, Durant became the eighth player in NBA history with 31,000 points.
37:50He's a little bit over 500 points away.
37:53Less than 400 from passing Wilts and a little more than 500 needed.
37:58To pass our buddy Dirk Nowitzki.
38:00By the way, tonight, Dirk is here at the game in a suite at American Airlines Center.
38:04And the other thing you may notice on the list,
38:07James Harden tonight to pass Carmelo Anthony.
38:09The Clippers are playing Minnesota.
38:11Harden needs 21 points tonight.
38:13Wow, out of a timeout.
38:14Here's a basket for Capella and a foul.
38:16But Harden needs 21 points tonight, guys, to move past Carmelo Anthony.
38:19And he will ascend to the top 10 in NBA history and point score.
38:24I mean, both guys are pretty much walking buckets.
38:27They're doing it a long time.
38:29And this efficiency that they still play at, even at the age out there, just makes it sensational.
38:34And the guys, too, that are, like, really doing it in the three-point era,
38:38they're going to climb those ladders a little bit faster.
38:41Yeah.
38:41Capella misses.
38:43Offensive rebound, however, by Akogi.
38:45He retrieved the loose ball and called timeout a moment ago.
38:49Then Durant misses and Coop with the rebound.
38:54Get back to Durant in a minute.
38:55I got something else I want to add to that.
38:56But let's see how the live action unfolds here for the Mavs.
38:59As Williams finds Coop outside.
39:03Grab that rebound.
39:04Any time he grabs the rebound, you think something special might happen.
39:07He drives here, has it blocked, keeps it alive.
39:10But the Rockets come away with it.
39:11Capella tied the game last time down the floor.
39:14And Houston seeking the lead here.
39:16And as we head towards the back half of the second quarter, Durant straight line drive and late
39:24wraparound pass deflected out of bounds by the Mavs.
39:29Before the game, I brought up to Jake Kidd that not only is Durant scoring,
39:32but he's eighth in the league in minutes played per game, guys.
39:34Almost 36 minutes.
39:36And Jake Kidd said, well, look, he loves the work.
39:39He loves the competition.
39:41He loves the game.
39:42He loves winning.
39:43He loves scoring as he just scored two more.
39:46That was hard.
39:47The respect with which Jake Kidd was talking about Kevin Durant and his work ethic and love
39:53of this sport and this game was, it was really cool to hear what Jake Kidd had to say.
39:57He loves the work.
39:58Yeah, right?
39:59I mean, you know, whether he's playing pickup in the summer, he just loves to be on the court.
40:04When you perfect your craft, the game comes so easy to you.
40:07Just love the way he attacks it.
40:12He scored a moment ago to put himself at 15 for the game.
40:14He finds Jabari Smith, Jr.
40:16Smith puts it down.
40:17Nice touch on the shot.
40:18Houston's advantage now, four points.
40:22Absolutely for most of this game, including searching out to an 11-point lead at one stage
40:27of the first quarter.
40:31Houston's a really good offensive team.
40:34Fourth in scoring.
40:35Fourth in offensive rating.
40:37Runner by Christie came up short, but Powell got it back.
40:40Shot clock didn't reset, though.
40:42So Christie in the corner, works his way out to the wing, makes it a three and draws a foul.
40:52Wow.
40:52Sometimes when you have to do something, good things happen.
40:56And Max Christie, with the shot clock winding down on him, heaves and hits.
41:02Unorthodox, perhaps, but three on the board nonetheless, and maybe four.
41:07Really had to work for that one.
41:09Obviously, you got the first shot blocked.
41:11Shot clock running down.
41:12You just want to get something up, but to be able to get that one to go, they call it three the hard way.
41:17How about four?
41:18There it is.
41:19Four-point play for Max Christie.
41:20Die the game.
41:22Ninth in the NBA going into play tonight.
41:25Max Christie is shooting just over 46% on threes.
41:33Durant against Pichet.
41:35There was some contact out near the free-throw line.
41:37Pass out to the corner.
41:39Alvin Thompson rebounds the miss by Jamari Smith, Jr.
41:41But it's stolen.
41:42And here's Koop in the open court.
41:43Akogi chasing.
41:44Koop ducks around him and scores.
41:46On the open court, Koop is so much fun to watch.
41:53Akogi went back and dug his heels into battling, but Koop still comes away with the two points.
42:01Now it's Akogi.
42:02Blind pass through traffic.
42:03He did find Smith over in the corner.
42:06And Smith.
42:07And again, nice touch on that turnaround shot in the paint just elevates over the defense.
42:13Part of that Volvo performance plan is wrestling with the monsters.
42:17Yeah.
42:17He's one of those.
42:18Yeah.
42:18Obviously Durant seven feet doesn't like to be called seven feet, but
42:22Jabari 6'10.
42:24Guys that you have to deal with that can rise up at any point in time and has that matchup.
42:33Thompson threw his hands.
42:35Turnovers Houston.
42:36Thompson did not think Capello was going to flip that pass in transition.
42:40Here's tonight's Whataburger.
42:41What a play of the game.
42:42Cooper flag with the transition layup.
42:45He's been moving at full speed.
42:46Ava corralled that loose ball.
42:48And again, we've seen how good he is with that left hand.
42:51How about an assist for Koop.
42:52String music for Bebo.
42:55Dropping a dime for the second time in the game is Cooper flag.
42:59I'm sorry, that's his first assist tonight.
43:02Mavericks retake the lead.
43:04They're on a 9-2 run right now.
43:06Foul called on Max Christie.
43:08Going up to challenge the shot of Amin Thompson, who's on the floor for Houston with three fouls here late in the second quarter.
43:15Amin Thompson is an 80% free throw shooter this year, 68% over the last two years.
43:29If they're not calling body, that's a clean play.
43:44One more free throw for Thompson, who had nearly a career high last night with 31.
43:54He's averaging almost 25 points over the last three games.
43:57That's his first point tonight.
44:000 for fourth on the floor.
44:02One of two on the free throw line on that trip.
44:05Thompson's averaging 18 a game this year.
44:07Oh, Brandon Williams clear for takeoff.
44:12Boy, that's smart going away from that screen.
44:14That lane just opened right up and he punched.
44:17And that's your leading score for the Mavericks in tonight's game.
44:20B. Wills got 11 points.
44:21B. Wills got 9.7 assists in OKC last night.
44:28Aaron Holliday, now Delvin Thompson.
44:31Late clock for Durant.
44:33Late clock's not going to bother him.
44:34A little hesitation, but he missed it.
44:36And no iron, so it's a shot clock violation.
44:42There's a timeout on the floor.
44:44The Mavs are on an 11-3 run right now.
44:47Brandon Williams has been a big part of it.
44:49He's knocked down a three.
44:50And then the right hand rim rocker for Brandon Williams.
44:56Mavericks basketball on Mavs TV brought to you by your North Texas Chevy dealers.
45:0151-47 Dallas leads Houston late in the second quarter.
45:06Crafted for those who love the game on and off the court.
45:09Style meets precision with the Tiso Super Sport NBA Special Edition.
45:14In here for your chance to win yours at bit.ly slash Mavericks sweepstakes.
45:23Mavericks leading score, Brandon Williams.
45:2511 points.
45:25Anthony Davis has 10.
45:27And the Mavericks lead this game 51-47 as we play late in the second quarter.
45:34Good minutes to be with tonight.
45:37AD playing on the second night of a back for the second time this year.
45:40Rising up for another jumper.
45:42Brandon Williams does it again.
45:44He's been cat-quick tonight.
45:45Really has seen that speed come into play.
45:47It's been tough to deal with for the Rockets.
45:50Good to have speed on the floor on the second night of a back-to-back.
45:54You might be able to take advantage of some fatigue to play.
45:57Both teams are playing on the second night of a back-to-back.
46:00Reed Shepard, a long pass through a lot of traffic.
46:03Corner three, Aaron Holliday.
46:04That was a nice pass.
46:05It was.
46:08Prior to that, Dallas was on a 13-3 run.
46:14Aaron Holliday, almost 43% on threes this season.
46:18To a rolling Anthony Davis.
46:19He moves along with D.J. Washington.
46:25Holliday, 29 years old.
46:2923rd pick of the 2018 draft out of UCLA.
46:31Holliday brought it up before.
46:34Now you've got Durant with it.
46:38The bell is the screener.
46:41Four to shoot.
46:43KD probing into the paint and scores again.
46:46So smart of him.
46:47When he got the ball, he was on the left side.
46:50Run over to the middle.
46:51That takes away the trap.
46:53Allowed them play with space and then get to that spot to rise up.
46:56Just knowing where to get to your spots and how to manipulate the defense.
46:59He's a master at that.
47:00Good job, man!
47:01Everybody's Houston.
47:02They knocked the ball out of bounds on the coupe drive.
47:04And that's exactly what Jason Kidd was talking to you about before the game,
47:06Falwell.
47:07A master of his craft.
47:08Yeah.
47:08He's got to play that one-on-one, rise into that left spot, get to the left.
47:14And once he rises up, can't really affect the shot.
47:17Maybe the best pure score in the history of the game, maybe.
47:23Eight all-time point score, Kevin Durant.
47:26He's going to go up a couple of more spots in.
47:28Nice crossover to get in rhythm for the middie Anthony Davis.
47:31Now it's Max Christie defending Kevin Durant.
47:41And Durant with a drive and a lead for Clint Capella.
47:44Almost stolen by Dallas.
47:46Then it's turned over by Houston when Aaron Holliday stepped on the sideline in the corner.
47:50One of the seven deadly sins of this.
47:52Stepping on the side of that one.
47:54This is more so kind of a wonky play.
47:57Wasn't like he took a step back and was trying to drive.
47:59But I don't think he was expecting that pass either.
48:02It was wonky.
48:03That's a good word for it.
48:04Yes.
48:05Game hasn't been wonky at all tonight for Brandon Williams.
48:08He's been very sharp.
48:10And the Mavericks is a team they have been on offense.
48:1253 percent shooting in this game.
48:15And they're doing that against Houston,
48:16who ranks in the top five in the league in multiple defensive categories.
48:25Mavericks are doing it without a lot of threes tonight.
48:27Just four of ten on threes.
48:29Not taking many threes.
48:31Shooting 40 percent.
48:32But they just haven't taken very many.
48:45I got something for you guys before we get to halftime.
48:47I was talking about back-to-backs and such.
48:50Houston's only played one back-to-back prior to this set of back-to-backs are playing these last two games.
48:55These last two nights.
48:56And that was a no travel back-to-back when they played against Utah on Sunday and Monday.
49:01Lost the second game.
49:03Interesting to note the Mavericks go in to play tonight 24 games played overall.
49:06Most of anybody in the Western Conference tied for the most in the league.
49:10The Eastern Conference teams have played 24 games.
49:12Houston's only played 20 games this year going into tonight's playoffs in the NBA.
49:17Everyone except the Washington Wizards who have played 21.
49:19Everyone else has played at least 22 games.
49:21So some scheduling anomalies, lighter workload for Houston, heavy workload for Dallas as we reach what is the NBA Cup knockout stage.
49:31And I don't want to call it a break, but obviously it's a time in the schedule when it fends out for teams that don't make the knockout stage.
49:37Yeah, it's not really knowing who you're going to play during that time off, but yeah, four or five days off after that stretch.
49:48Love to see what comes of it.
49:49Coop missed it.
49:50Mavericks had a foul to give, which they take out near center court with 6.9 left.
49:54Mavericks have committed only five fouls in the first half of the game tonight.
50:11No defensive fouls in the first quarter.
50:14Four here in the second quarter.
50:16They had that one to give.
50:17Holiday puts it in play.
50:18KD's got it.
50:19Went in play at 6.9.
50:21Here's Durant, down to two seconds, down to one.
50:23Jumper foul.
50:27Foul's called on Washington.
50:29And it's three free throws for Kevin Durant.
50:33For his career 88%, a little bit over 88% this year.
50:37Oh yeah, definitely got it.
50:38Yeah.
50:47A chance to tie the game in the last second of the half.
50:51For Kevin Durant.
50:54KD was drafted in 2007, but this is only his 18th year.
50:58Remember that he missed a full season, 2019-20.
51:02After the Achilles injury during the 2019 finals with Golden State.
51:08To his 18th year for the University of Texas.
51:1137 years old, native of the D.C. area.
51:1415-time All-Star.
51:15And then, first turn, swing by our costume.
51:21Everything is three, perfect Titans.
51:23It is menyentanying.
51:24It's very realistic, so it's fun.
