00:00And that's what it's about, period.
00:02But I keep thumping them like this, and after I thump them a couple times, I feel better.
00:07But here we are at Irmo South Carolina.
00:09Welcome to Sam's Garage, presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
00:30This week on Sam's Garage, the great race wraps with 135 classics, a few wrong turns, and a lot of right stories.
00:51Proof that on time is relative when you're having fun.
00:54We'll meet the crew who turned a 1931 Rio Royale into a 2300 mile endurance legend.
01:05Then swing by Southfield Classics to see how hot riding meets high voltage, quietly.
01:13Finally, Sam tears into a 66 Corvette to mix old school looks with new school lungs, Summit style.
01:24We have 135-plus cars in the great race.
01:29Checkpoints along the way that they don't know in advance, and so the goal is you're going to stay on target.
01:35From start to finish, it's like family to me.
01:37Keeping it maintained, keeping it running hard.
01:39It's a complete family member. It's an experience.
01:42All the workers, all the towns that have been welcoming us.
01:45Winning an ace in the great race is just, it's one of the things that just lifts you up.
01:49Were we on time and everybody else was wrong? Were they on time and we were wrong?
01:53I guess we'll find out tonight.
01:55Nine days, 2300 miles, and a few creative detours, the great race wraps in style as Sam and crew trade trophies for stories.
02:04And maybe a few overheated tempers in true road warrior fashion.
02:09We may not win the race, but nobody's had more fun than us.
02:13Yesterday, we had an amazing day. We made a couple mistakes. We drove crazy to make it up.
02:20We came within, on that segment, within eight seconds.
02:24And how many minutes did we make up, Sam?
02:26We can't tell.
02:27Yeah, a lot.
02:29It's a lot. We just can't tell.
02:30About 13, 14 minutes we made up.
02:32Yeah, it was incredible what we were able to do. We had so much fun.
02:36The whole thing here, for us, is about bringing the experience to you guys.
02:43We hope everybody really enjoys what you bring, that we're able to bring to you.
02:48Without you guys, we wouldn't be able to do this. What an experience.
02:56We are racing for the RPM Foundation with their X-Cup team.
03:00It's a great race. It's always a good time with me and my teammates.
03:02We learn a lot every year. We always have a great time.
03:05Some core memories made. We always, you know, run into trouble somewhere.
03:08But it's a good time. At the end of the day, it's a good time.
03:10This was my fourth great race. And just as fun as my first one,
03:14even though I have two new teammates, which makes it even more fun
03:17because they're so great to hang out with.
03:19I got to agree, it was extremely hot this year.
03:21It was kind of rough at the beginning because it started out hot instead of getting hotter.
03:25Overall, it was awesome.
03:26It's been great to come back to the States after living in Italy for almost two years now
03:31and just back with these amazing people.
03:34We only see each other once a year. So overall, great experience.
03:39Sam, I greatly appreciate it. We've had so much fun at this race.
03:43It's our pleasure to sponsor it and to be able to participate in it.
03:46Thank you. We've had a wonderful run. Wonderful run.
03:49I want to say thank you to all our sponsors, including Doug.
03:52He was actually one of the sponsors this year for the great race coverage that came on Sam's Garage.
03:57Hemsaw is awesome. The last industrial saw that's made in America completely.
04:03They do an awesome job from their little saws that you guys want for the DIYer in your shop.
04:07Instead of using a chop saw that makes a mess everywhere and you've got to use goggles
04:11and metal goes flying everywhere, his saws being band saws, reverse rotation.
04:15They last a long time. They're nice and quiet. They work every time.
04:18And the biggest thing about them is that they cut perfectly straight.
04:21So if you guys are looking for a saw that's inexpensive for what it does
04:25for your shop and your garage at home, look at the Hemsaws.
04:28And if you guys are industries as well, big, giant companies,
04:31he makes saws that will cut a truck in half.
04:33So you guys want a nice saw that's going to last forever, check out Hemsaw.
04:37Dan came all the way from New York to finish the last three legs of the race.
04:42That's cool. That's a 12-hour drive one way just to get to South Carolina from New York.
04:46Orange County.
04:48Well, I did the race last year and I know how tough 9-8 on the road is doing this race.
04:53And I was proud to collect one of those medals.
04:56And Sam's got two of them now. He's one up on me.
04:59Well, now what we're going to do is go check out who won.
05:01Of course, Doug and I are always winners.
05:03But we want to know who actually won, so that's going to be cool.
05:06One of these teams will be your Grand Championship Division winner
05:11and overall winner of the 2025 Hemmings Great Race presented by Hagerty.
05:17In an unbelievable performance, they have dominated nearly end-to-end.
05:22Jeff and Eric Ferdinand, you are the Grand Championship.
05:28Unbelievable shootout.
05:30Sam's Garage is presented by NHOU.
05:45Brought to you by the following companies.
05:47Welcome back to Sailor.
06:17Sam's Garage presented by NH-Oil Undercoding.
06:32A 1931 Rio takes on modern weather, open cockpit and all.
06:37Proving vintage horsepower still gets it done.
06:40We catch up with the Rogo Fastener team
06:42who keep the bolts tight and the racers tighter.
06:45I'm here with Dan and the future of Rogo Fastener, Joe.
06:51He's the new COO.
06:53I'm very proud of you.
06:54You're taking the rain.
06:55And I want to say thank you to both of them,
06:57along with Rogo Fastener themselves,
06:59because they sponsored the Great Race,
07:01and they got us able to bring this entire footage over to you guys at home
07:05because the Great Race is something very special.
07:07We just finished 2,300 miles.
07:09Now, Rogo Fastener, you guys,
07:11they have everything that you need as far as abrasives, fasteners, cabinetry, everything.
07:16And they do such a good job, family-owned business.
07:18In Middletown, New York, Orange County, New York.
07:20Family-owned and operated since 1992.
07:23Joe was born into the business, raised in the business,
07:26and he's in the process of becoming the next CEO down the road.
07:31I've had my time, and I'll be taking over
07:34and running the business for the next generation and the next 30-something years.
07:39If you guys are DIYers at home, you have a huge facility as far as an operational garage.
07:45Anything that needs fasteners, that needs abrasives, that needs cabinetry,
07:50they're your man.
07:50Drill bits, cutting tools, anything you guys need, they're your guys.
07:54Go to RogoFastener.com.
07:55Check them out.
07:56They support the Great Race, the support car guys, the camaraderie.
07:59We need people like Rogo to keep this dream alive going down the road and for the future.
08:12It's a 31 Rio Royale.
08:14It's an exact replica of one that ran in the 1931 Indy 500.
08:18Rio did it for a publicity stunt just to show how reliable their engines were.
08:23And they took a bone-stocked four-door car and cut the roof off and put a boat tail on it.
08:27And all the racers of the day said they'll never qualify and never finish.
08:31And they qualified an average speed of 106.7 miles an hour and finished nine.
08:37These guys drove that car 2,300 miles through some serious weather.
08:42Because you guys get soaking wet.
08:43It's open cockpit.
08:44Well, and one day we actually, we lost our speedometer.
08:47Yep.
08:48Took us four minutes to figure out the issues, change fuses, get back on the road.
08:51And it was a 30 mile an hour road with no visibility because the torrential rain.
08:55And I told Phillip, we did a great job navigating just to keep me on course.
09:01And I was going to fly.
09:02We passed all the cars that got by us about 70 miles an hour.
09:06No visibility with the lights flashing and the horn on.
09:10The visibility was so bad, we never saw the checkpoint.
09:13We went by them at 70 and they must have gone, what was that?
09:16So it was wild.
09:17It was a good car.
09:18It's a great time.
09:19The great race is all about great people and a good time.
09:21What a fabulous day.
09:39From the beginning of the race, nobody had more fun than us.
09:43We missed some turns.
09:45We made it up.
09:46We came across the finish line.
09:49The car ran flawlessly.
09:50We got some tweaks we'll do for Route 66 run next year.
09:55I'm really proud of Sam and I, the job we've done.
09:59I can't express it enough.
10:01And everybody that's followed us, this is a long, grueling ordeal.
10:04To just finish, I've never believed in participation medals.
10:08But to win this after 2,300 miles in nine days of racing is a heck of an accomplishment.
10:14And everybody, if you can't race it, follow us.
10:19If you get a chance, we go by you.
10:21Come on out and see us.
10:23We can't do it without you guys.
10:25We've got a really exciting announcement for you guys.
10:38The Nopi Nationals are coming back on September 12th, 13th, 2026 at Echo Park Speedway, formerly known as Land Motor Speedway.
10:44I built this car for Salomon about six years ago out of boxes.
10:49This is a six-speed left-hand drive, turbo Supra number 147.
10:54And we are going to be giving it away.
10:56At the Nationals, we're going to call it the Supra Sunday giveaway because you have to be there on Sunday when we hand out the raffles.
11:02And you're going to be there to collect your prize.
11:05Now, how do you get those tickets?
11:06This is a giveaway.
11:07You've got to go to the merch store.
11:08And anytime you buy anything over $25, you get a ticket.
11:12You're not only going to get a ticket, but you'll also get a $25 coupon from Summit Racing where you can go online and get whatever you want from their site and have $25 in your pocket.
11:21So you guys want to stay tuned.
11:22As we go to September into 2026, we're going to do a couple mods on this car.
11:27This already has a single turbo conversion.
11:30It's already got a standalone computer in it.
11:32It's all ready to go.
11:33It's got the clutch.
11:34Most of this car is brand new because we just put it together about six years ago.
11:37So one of you guys are going to be very lucky in obtaining a six-speed iconic Toyota Supra left-hand drive.
11:43Stay tuned.
11:44Nopi.com
12:02No pistons, no noise, just torque for days.
12:08Southfield Classics show how electric conversions can still smell like shop grease and hot coffee, not just electrons.
12:14All right, so today we're going to be talking about batteries here at Southfield Classics.
12:19And this battery pack that No and Jesus just installed, you say weighs as much as a fully-dressed 350.
12:26Basically the same weight, 185 pounds per battery pack, weighs about 545, 560.
12:32And I think that's about the same as a 350 Chevrolet draft, yeah.
12:35So you're not going to have that huge weight, noise from the tires, and tire wear due to the extra weight.
12:42No, it's really the same weight.
12:44Everything kind of calculated out the same.
12:46Where we have gone back and had our engineers make sure that we center it correctly over top of the front axles to where we get the good balance.
12:53Everything's balanced like it's supposed to be.
12:54Has the same weight.
12:56Basically it's the same truck with no noise.
12:59How much does that motor weigh?
13:00A couple hundred pounds max.
13:01So like a transmission?
13:03Yeah, actually lighter than a transmission.
13:05Because there's no food in it, a little bit of food, but not 13 quarts of food.
13:10Basically it holds a liter.
13:11That is so cool.
13:12A liter of food.
13:13Tell me about the bracketry and how you position this and why.
13:17So the bracketry was made up, I guess, for the design of the way the, you know, the firewall is made.
13:23It's made with a flat firewall and then it has a pitch of an angle down toward the bottom of it.
13:28So we made this Z-type style bracketry so that it actually sits inside of an engine bay.
13:33Our design was to make it to where it doesn't have to be cut into the firewall.
13:38Absolutely.
13:38And you still have the interior space as well.
13:40Correct.
13:40Correct.
13:41You still have all that other stuff and, you know, you don't have any of the other things that you have to cut up or fabricate or any of that.
13:47Most of all those stuff is all just made up, done and ready to be installed.
13:51That's very cool.
13:51Now, I saw the front end has got a rack and pinion, modern design.
13:55What kind of front end did you say that was again?
13:57I believe that comes off of Mustang II.
13:58When they say Mustang II, what is, is that the 79 Mustang II that came out that no one liked?
14:04Yeah, it was pre-Fox body Mustang that nobody liked.
14:06The best part about it was the suspension.
14:08The front end.
14:09That's incredible.
14:10It's used in everything.
14:11We're using some of the best components that they've made over the years to try to make it even better as we go forward.
14:17Everything on this is a hot rod.
14:18That's right.
14:19All the components are everything you and I and know are used to that we work with in the industry.
14:23Yeah, absolutely.
14:24So the only difference is the cool fact that it's a high voltage.
14:26Yeah, it's just different.
14:27You know, and everybody, you know, you can have your quabbles about it.
14:30You can say, oh, I don't like it.
14:32But it's all just moving in that forward direction, forward movement.
14:35You know, we've, of course, we've all done LS swaps for most of our career.
14:39So this is just the next evolution of it.
14:41It's got to keep moving forward.
14:42We've all done turbo swaps.
14:44We've done all that stuff, right?
14:45And if you're a real gearhead, then you're going to appreciate everything you see here with a giant smile on your face, ear to ear, driving it down the road.
14:52That's right.
14:53The only difference, like I tell everybody, when you drive it is you're able to talk to your buddy in the seat next to you.
14:58And you don't have to turn the radio up when you know they do stuff.
15:01So they're super fun.
15:02They're super fast.
15:03The coolest part about this is that when you're a youngster like we were and we're sneaking out the houses and pushing the cars down the street because you couldn't let the exhaust sound be heard.
15:13Look at that.
15:14But I'm telling you guys, here at Southfield Classics, with these high voltage vehicles that we're building, it is a total game changer.
15:20All the will would, quick performance, everything you would see normally in a hot rod, but with high voltage and done beautifully.
15:26It's not just put together.
15:28You guys really do it in an attractive manner.
15:30That's been our goal since from our outset is, you know, I'm a hot rod guy and I'm a big, big classic car guy.
15:37So if we were going to do it, we wanted to make sure that we did it to the high, utmost quality and make sure that it's right up there with the real show quality vehicles.
15:44That's what it's all about for me.
15:46So that's why we try to instill it on all our vehicles.
15:48And that's why if you guys are gearheads and you have a collection at home, you got to have one of these in that collection because that's make you a real gearhead.
15:55This is absolutely cool.
15:56Thank you so much for showing us this.
16:00Sam's Garage is presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
16:05Is brought to you by the following companies.
16:25Welcome back to Sam's Garage presented by NHOU.
16:49Sam turns a 327 Corvette into a factory fresh bruiser.
16:53Trick flow heads, roller cam, and enough Summit Racing goodies to make every small block guy nod and approval.
17:01I got my good customer, John, all the way from New York.
17:04He brought me his 1966 all-original Corvette equipped with a 327.
17:08And then we're going to be upgrading the engine.
17:10The engine itself is at Don Ewing, Ewing Automotive Machine, and he's doing a refresh for me.
17:14But we are going to do the top end.
17:16Being that it's a 327, I want to keep it original.
17:18But we're going to dress it up.
17:19All right, so I went to Summit Racing and I got a top end kit.
17:22First, starting off with a set of trick flow cylinder heads.
17:25This right here, the weight savings alone is going to be 40 pounds.
17:28194 intake valves, 150 exhaust valves, 56cc chambers, three-angle valve job.
17:34It's going to make good power.
17:36Along with that, we went ahead and got a 600 CFM Summit Racing carburetor.
17:40Because we don't want to get too big, it's very important.
17:43You guys size that correctly, depending on what you're building.
17:46We went ahead and got a dual roller timing set, also adjustable.
17:49You can see right here, it's keyed for the crankshaft.
17:51You can put it anywhere you want.
17:52We're going to put it at the top and center.
17:54I went ahead and got a Summit Racing camshaft as well.
17:57Not too big.
17:58It's got 528 on the intake and 538 on the exhaust.
18:02It comes in at 1,800 RPM.
18:04It's going to be perfect for us because we don't want to go too high.
18:06327s are high revving engines, but when you put an automatic behind it, you're not really utilizing that high rev.
18:13But how do you recommend for people to decide what size camshaft to put in?
18:17When you're going into the camshaft specs, you want to make sure you're getting the correct camshaft,
18:21whether it's a hydraulic tappet, a non-hydraulic tappet, or a hydraulic roller.
18:25We decided to upgrade to a hydraulic roller.
18:27In the specs, when you're looking at it, it gives you the duration of when it comes in as an RPM.
18:33When you're sizing your camshaft, depending on what you got, if you have a stick shaft,
18:36depending on what rear end gear you got, very important,
18:39you want to size that RPM band according to what you're going to be doing with the engine.
18:43And is that something that Summit Racing can help you with through customer service?
18:47Absolutely.
18:47If you have any questions, you can always call Summit Racing and ask them what they recommend.
18:50But when you're looking at camspects, always make sure to go into that spec and look at what you got.
18:55That's why this one goes in 1,800 RPM.
18:57We also went with the nice hydraulic roller lifters.
18:59That's going to make it really nice.
19:011.5 roller rockers.
19:03And once these are all installed, then I'm going to use this nice push rod tool
19:06to find out my length for the push rod.
19:09And once I've got the length, I'm going to add 50,000 to it for preload
19:12and then order my push rods from Summit Racing.
19:14I like that you kept the factory valve cover.
19:18And I know you took it to Miller Powder Coating.
19:22And they always do a fantastic job.
19:24So it's nice keeping old school with new school.
19:27Absolutely.
19:27See, that's going to look really good right there.
19:29So the top end is going to be all nice trick flow deal.
19:32But what I decided to do is use the factory intake manifold.
19:35This is heavy, right?
19:36But the factory intake manifold has the fill for the oil.
19:39And it's got the PCV valve for the crankcase.
19:41Nothing on the valve cover you see.
19:43So I didn't want to change the valve covers.
19:44This way I kept the manifold.
19:46Had Miller Powder Coating, make it look really nice.
19:48Along with the exhaust manifolds.
19:50This is ceramic coated, factory fresh.
19:54It's not paint.
19:55So it's not going to chip.
19:56And it's not going to look nasty, old rusty looking car.
19:59I want to keep the factory manifolds so that it stays true to the car.
20:03Once this is all installed, we're going to be putting a cold case radiator in it as well.
20:07We're going to be doing the suspension, making it all nice.
20:09Put a 700R behind it.
20:11Put AC in it.
20:12And John's going to enjoy this for many years to come.
20:14That's right.
20:15John is a retired New York City police officer.
20:18And now that he's going to have some time to really enjoy this car,
20:21I think he's going to like all the special touches that you're doing with it.
20:24Absolutely.
20:25Very much so.
20:26And he knows how to drive manual, but he doesn't want to drive it in New York traffic.
20:29So I totally understand, John.
20:31Don't blame me.
20:31So you guys want to build yourself, whether it be a small block Chevy, small block Ford,
20:35old school, new school LS, go to Summit Racing.
20:38They've got everything you need.
20:39If you have any questions, give them a call.
20:44Be sure to check out Sam's Garage on these other media platforms.
20:51From great race grit to plug and play torque and small block glory,
20:55this week proved gearheads never run out of ways to make power,
20:59just new ways to talk about it.
21:01See you next time on Sam's Garage, where the tools are loud and the laughs are louder.
