Penrith Beach, known as 'Pondi' to Western Sydney locals reopens today, but the hot weather has officials taking a cautious tone. The opening of the patrolled beach was brought forward a day to capitalise on the sunny weather.
00:00Hyundai has opened for its third season. It was looking a little gloomy, but the sun is definitely out. We're at 29 degrees at the moment. There are a few people here. We're expecting that it'll get up to 41 degrees here in Penrith, and that we'll probably see the beach fill up. We know that last year there were over 300,000 people that visited the beach, and as you said, they opened it a day early to accommodate for the very hot weather. Take a listen.
00:29I got in touch with the Minister's office as soon as we found out that that mercury was going to hit 40 and said, 24 hours. Surely we can do this. Surely we can do it for the people of Western Sydney.
00:42This year, in addition to the additional activations and the additional shade, we're also running a junior life-saving program, free skin checks over a period of time, as well as some community water safety activities. So this is the true beach experience. Everything you want.
00:58Making sure that Western Sydney has access to a free swimming area.
01:06Now, beaches across the state are already filling up. There are New South Wales ambulances urging people to stay cool, so we'll expect more people to hit the beaches today.
01:16There are around 50 fires that are burning across the state, and a fire ban in place for a third of the state.
01:22So I'm sure people across the state are going to find many ways, including coming to the beach, to stay cool.
