00:00Hello there and welcome to your Thursday One Show live on BBC One and iPlayer and look who's
00:11back from touring with his band JLS, it's JB Gill. Oh it's good to be back Alex, thank you.
00:16And whilst I was on the road with the boys we had the honour of taking part in a brilliant
00:21one big thank you. Now very shortly you'll see the moment we surprised two inspirational
00:26sisters Megan and Brogan who after experiencing a tragic event have made it their mission to help
00:31others in their community. Oh it's really lovely that one isn't it. Also on the show tonight we
00:36will be joined by two award-winning actors who are starring in an incredibly emotional festive film.
00:43Now she's appeared in everything from The Sixth Sense to About a Boy whilst he's brought us
00:48fantastic performances in Harry Potter and Mr Turner. But now Timothy Spool and Tony Collette
00:54have teamed up for the film Goodbye June, directed by none other than Kate Winslet and it's all about
00:59a dysfunctional even family who come together when their elderly mother's health takes a turn
01:04for the worse. Oh my gosh it is so emotional but it is really life-affirming as well and joining them
01:11is the man best known for bringing lunges into our lounges, Joe Wicks is here. Now he'll be sharing
01:17his tips on the latest food trend we all seem to be hearing about, eating more protein and I'm sure
01:22that high protein diet came in handy when Joe took on the gladiators for this year's celebrity
01:27Christmas special. We'll have an exclusive look later in the show. Yes we will. Now lots coming
01:32up but first earlier today it was announced that energy watchdog Ofgem approved extra investment in
01:38the UK's gas and electricity network which some say could push up our energy bills. So we're shining a
01:43light on the country's journey to using renewable energy. Yeah Joe Crowley has been given exclusive
01:49behind the scenes access ahead of a significant milestone that will see us go 100 percent green
01:54for the very first time. Running Britain's electricity grid entirely on green energy has never happened
02:03before but now the future's here. In the months ahead for the first time ever the entire electricity
02:10network will be 100 percent run albeit briefly without fossil fuels. So that's no coal and no gas.
02:19It's a journey that began in Marykirk Aberdeenshire in 1887. Feralith Green is the great granddaughter
02:26of James Blyth, a Scottish inventor and renewable energy pioneer whose ideas were more than a century
02:33ahead of their time. This is one of James Blyth's turbines in the back garden at Marykirk.
02:38James built a 33 foot wooden turbine with cloth sails. Primitive now but revolutionary then. It
02:46generated enough electricity to light 10 bulbs inside the house and even powered a small lathe.
02:52Windmills and wind turbines have been used but I think his design was the first one that actually
02:59generated electricity. There is a story and I don't know if there's any truth in this that James Blyth
03:04offered to light the the main street of Marykirk with electric light but I think some of the
03:10villagers they said it was the work of the devil. This is the only commercial wind turbine that was
03:17built in his lifetime. The fact that what he'd been building in his back garden actually had some
03:23practical application. He must have been very proud. At COP30 in Brazil the UK reaffirmed its commitment to
03:31clean energy and phasing out fossil fuels. And through the publicly owned company GB Energy
03:37it's investing in renewables, nuclear generation and exploring emerging technologies like tidal power.
03:44Now here at NISO, the national energy system operator, are the people balancing Britain's
03:49energy grid. Making sure our homes and businesses have enough power every second of every day.
03:55And to find out how this big green moment will work we've managed to gain rare access to one of
04:02Britain's most secure and advanced control rooms. This team managed by director of system operations
04:08Craig Dyke coordinates Britain's electricity network in real time. I can remember a time where 24 hours
04:15notice you had to ring an oil fire post station to let them know you wanted to run them tomorrow.
04:20Wow. Today's technology such as batteries means you can issue an instruction and they're on and
04:25running within a second. That is how much it has changed. How tricky is it, this moment where for
04:30the first time we're going to go without gas, without fossil fuels for a moment in time. Over the last five
04:36to six years we've built a plan and we are so close to be able to do it now. Earlier this year we had the
04:41lowest ever carbon on the system. It's so so close. What we really want is that one half hour just 30 minutes
04:47of zero carbon operation. If we can do it for 30 minutes then you can build it out for longer.
04:51Is it a big deal? We are probably the first country in the world to be able to say we've done this.
04:56It sets the way for Clean Power 2030 where the government has ambitions to be able to operate
05:01the system most of the time at zero zero carbon. So this is a small step but actually a significant leap
05:06for GB. I mean those 2030 targets are a long way off. Is it even achievable? It's ambitious but we're
05:13pretty confident we can operate the system zero carbon within the next few months and we know
05:18that will set us in a really good standing to be able to operate that system for all the time in 2030.
05:23Claire Dichter is NISO's Director of Strategy and Policy. What will happen for this big moment to come
05:29around? We will need the right conditions so it will more than likely be very windy, quite sunny as well
05:37and the demand of the system so what people are using will be relatively stable. So what would clean
05:45power pioneer James Blyth have made of this moment? I think if James Blyth had known that there was going
05:51to be this moment in history and everything would be powered by renewables including wind turbines he
05:58would have been amazed and astonished and delighted I think.
06:05Oh thank you so much for that Joe and since filming the team told us they hit a record 97.7%
06:12zero carbon earlier this year so hopefully they do get to 100% any day now because it has been very
06:17windy this week. I had a notice but they tell me it has. Well they'll need it. Still to come though I'll
06:22be delivering a one big thank you to two very special sisters alongside my JLS bandmates.
06:27But time now to introduce tonight's guest. Please welcome the nation's PE teacher Joe Wicks
06:32and award-winning actors Toni Collette and Timothy Spohr.
06:40Good to see you all. So it's the season of course for Christmas films you have a festive offering
06:46with a difference which is beautiful we'll get to that very shortly but Joe you're on the bandwagon already.
06:52Oh yeah we started early so my um my wife's sister came around for a little sleepover the other day
06:56and we watched her favorite film which is Jingle all the way and it's now like it's just a classic
07:00you know Arnie, Turbo Man, kids are watching and go oh he's an action figure like it's a really fun
07:04film and that obviously in Home Alone 1 is my favorite of all time. That is the ultimate I think
07:09isn't it until the kids trying to recreate the stuff. Exactly well Joe has another film to add to his list
07:16tonight because Tony and Timothy are bringing us an unconventional Christmas film that follows a father and
07:21his adult children whose lives are thrown into chaos when they're confronted with saying goodbye
07:26to their poorly mum and who's played by Dame Helen Mirren but before we chat more let's take a look
07:31goodbye June. My gorgeous daughters. So lovely they can all be here for you. I'm here. I told you never wear yellow
07:40because it doesn't suit you darling. Now why don't we have goose for Christmas? I always like a cheap bird.
07:47Dad shut up. Maybe if I'm lucky I'll come back as snow then I'll see you all at Christmas time.
07:58I love you all so much
08:00but I love to go twice as much when you love each other.
08:10Poor Alex. It's so lovely. How do you watch the trailer?
08:14The trailer set me off again now. I mean it's such a moving movie. Tony it follows the journey of four
08:20siblings who come together and they're played by yourself Kate Winslet, Andrea Riseborough,
08:25Johnny Flynn and they pull together through a very difficult moment. Just tell us about their family
08:30dynamic. We're kind of all living disparate lives you know it's a bit fragmented and you know this
08:37challenge of losing the matriarch of the family our beloved mother brings us all back together and
08:43she kind of quietly manipulates us into working through our problems and um it obviously changes all
08:51of us it's one of the one of the most difficult things a person has to face in life and you know
08:56it could easily be a film about a woman dying but it's about a woman living and the love in the family
09:01and um all the hope and generosity and um it is set around Christmas our mum Helen's character June
09:12it's called Goodbye June loves Christmas and trying to get her through to that day um yeah it's a very
09:19beautiful movie I mean even I when I'm watching the trailer tear up I you can see how much it affects
09:25you and it is a celebration of this woman June's life isn't it Timothy you play the husband I do and
09:31what's really interesting is it it sort of shows how people deal with grief differently yeah indeed
09:39well Bernie he's all this is no help really at all understatement
09:47he's a massive pain in the butt really but that's what people expect of him he's a character that has
09:53cast himself as a character that says the wrong things he's a joker he's um uh children are either
10:00turning him to shut up or just you know I mean he's just kind of but it's all a deflection because
10:06ultimately what he's doing is clouding it's incredible pain he has and you'll see it occasionally
10:12in the movie where he and his wife June and Bernie are together and you see that they've that's a long
10:17marriage and they've gone through it together and it's about that and these this I have to say this
10:24team of actors and Kate this is right one of the most enjoyable fantastic experience of my life and
10:30Kate is by far one of the best directors I've ever worked with I mean it was just honestly I don't
10:35want to sound like the Partridge family but this bunch of every way actors came together it could
10:40have gone the other way but there was an instant bond and Kate was a massively brilliant leader it
10:45was a really exceptional experience and it's a brilliant script written by her son yes of course
10:53he wrote it when he was like 1920 how and the maturity the delicacy of the older characters it's a it's
11:01actually like it's a kind of the complexity of all their trajectories and having that emotional
11:07intelligence and the ability to understand what it is to be human and the cycle of life it's
11:11incredibly insightful if anybody ever wants to accuse it of being just because it's her son you
11:17go no this is a major major yeah Joe you've got to watch this honestly but pick your moment yeah
11:23yeah I love a good cry yeah no I need a good cry and my good friend of mine one of my best friends
11:28just lost his mum so this is going to be something that's going to hit me hard when I watch this yeah
11:31I think so I said to Timothy earlier I mean it's one of the best films I've seen in the last five
11:35years I honestly absolutely loved it and it's not we should say it's not all sad though there are
11:40light moments there's lots of comedy you point at me yes you're a character I didn't realise I was
11:45the comic relief in the movie until we were shooting my character's a bit of an idiot as well but you do
11:50the karaoke and you know it is really hard well that's when you see him expressing himself this
11:55agony through this song he does and karaoke scenes in films can be a bit of a trope but in this case
12:01it's somebody who's actually opening their guts and their soul to show you what's going on and it's not
12:06even direct it's like a thing that where you see someone he has been in absolute and is in agony
12:12yeah and and it's a moment between him and his son he doesn't even know his son's watching and his
12:16son's told him accused him of not loving his mother so it's a really really moment yeah yeah well it is
12:23funny you're right there's a lot of love Tony's character is brilliant I mean she's a brilliant actress
12:29they're all brilliant these and she just goes from funny she goes from funny to really really
12:34profoundly so this whole thing well it's life like you know nothing's kind of dry and dramatic
12:39or just you know painfully phased comedy and anybody who knows experience a profound thing
12:44there's always a some inappropriate comedy or some appropriate government is it's never something
12:49terrible happens about when it's really real that's part of life isn't it and it's this you know and
12:54there's a lot of that in this movie well congratulations what a film honestly goodbye june will be in
13:00selected cinemas from friday the 12th of december and will be available to watch on netflix on christmas
13:06eve yes still to come joe will be telling us what it was like facing up to the gladiators this year
13:11in their christmas special goodness me but time now for this week's one big thank you and we are
13:16celebrating two sisters with a powerful story yes very shortly you will see the moment aston marvin arisha
13:23and i surprise megan and brogan from wigan but first let's find out why they deserve their moment in the
13:28spotlight megan and brogan are fantastic people they've just taken everything in their stride
13:38and they've just become part of our family in the summer of 2022 megan and brogan's brother hayden
13:44went swimming near new brighton with a friend despite being a confident swimmer he got into difficulty
13:51and asked his friend to swim to shore to send help but by the time help arrived it was too late
13:57hayden had drowned if you see a photograph of hayden and the sort of build that he is he's the type of
14:04person stereotypically we think that would be a strong enough swimmer but it this just proves that
14:10it could happen to anyone since that day megan and brogan have made it their mission to prevent
14:16others from drowning they've given up their spare time to raise thousands of pounds for the rnli
14:21through sponsored runs bike rides and sailing events they've been involved in numerous fundraisers
14:28for us at new brighton what they have done to raise money for us is is insurmountable really
14:36megan and brogan have also committed themselves to raising awareness of the dangers around water megan
14:41spoke at the launch of the world health organization's global drowning status report people who have lost a
14:50loved one standing in front of the general public explaining what that is like and then off the
14:55back of that the education piece that they can deliver through their experience that is absolutely
15:02amazing despite their own grief they've given up countless days of their time to give talks all
15:07over the world in the hope of sparing other families from going through a tragic loss like theirs
15:13other people may be kept alive because of what they're actually now doing we're just so grateful for
15:17they've done it goes way above and beyond well after all they've been through being able to dedicate
15:26their time to making such a difference is just incredible absolutely and we wanted to make sure
15:32megan and brogan knew just how inspirational they are so when we found out who their favorite band was
15:38well let's just say i was more than happy to help
15:40this week we're in nottingham to surprise megan and brogan now megan thinks she's here for an
15:49interview about her work raising awareness around water safety brogan meanwhile is enjoying a well-earned
15:56holiday but don't worry she's not going to miss out on the surprise and why nottingham because this is the
16:03venue for a gig by one of their all-time favorite bands jls now like everyone on the one show i
16:10absolutely love a one big thank you but the difference with this one is i'm not doing it on my
16:15own i've actually got the jls boys to come and help me out megan is actually just down the corridor in
16:22another room conducting an interview and once that's in the bag our team is going to casually suggest
16:28that it might be possible to meet jls we've heard so much about megan we're super excited apparently
16:33she's a massive fan so we're excited to meet her too with the boys hidden away in their dressing room
16:39we're getting ready for the interview i'm sorry it's a little bit manic and they've got a big gig on
16:43tonight um jls so it's a bit chaotic are you a fan of jl are you yeah well growing up our crew gets the
16:53interview underway what are then some of the things that you can do to keep yourself safe being aware
17:00of potential hazards around the water and talking about them don't go swimming by yourself it's not
17:06just about learning to swim it's learning to float to live would you mind telling me a little bit about
17:12what happened to hayden we lost hayden to drowning um in 2022 it was the hottest day of the year and he
17:19went swimming with a friend both very strong swimmers and they got into difficulty you've kind
17:24of used it to raise awareness we started by sharing the little phrase stay safe for hayden we can make
17:30a difference and potentially even just save one life or make one person think twice that's why we do it
17:38and that's where we get our strength from with the interview over megan thinks it's time to go
17:44but in the corridor our crew member says she might be able to get megan in to meet jls
17:49so shall we see we might be able to see if we can meet them yeah yeah the boys hear her come in oh
17:57hello megan is starting to wonder what exactly is going on so jb is coming clean well listen megan we've
18:22heard a lot about you actually and uh we know that you've been doing so much amazing work um not
18:28just you obviously your sister brogan as well and we're very proud of you but you also got a very
18:33big surprise for you great good to meet you guys even bigger than meeting us with here from the one
18:40show to give you and your sister brogan a one big thank you which you very much deserve we know all the
18:51hard work that you've done and obviously all the things you've had to overcome in order to do that
18:54as well so not only are we very proud of you we're so glad we get to meet you we also know your sister
18:59you know she couldn't be here today so do you think it's all right if we could maybe facetime
19:04her and say hello yeah yeah yeah that should do it brogan has no idea why her sister is ringing
19:11or who is also there hello guess who i'm with i'm with jls once brogan's been brought up to speed
19:19jb moves on to the next stage of the surprise now brogan you megan don't know this as well but
19:26we've actually got some videos to show you guys there we go are we ready yeah hi megan and brogan what
19:33a surprise this must have been to meet the wonderful jls boys in person and on the phone now we know it's
19:40been a joint effort between the two of you to make sure that hayden's memory lives on and because of
19:45the work you do in his name you are actually saving lives hi i just wanted to say a big thank you from
19:52all of us at hoy league and on behalf of the rnli as well hi megan this is to you thank you for all of
19:58your efforts and your global advocacy on drowning wishing you a huge thank you from everybody at the
20:03charity for your help and support with our water safety and drowning prevention work hi megan i don't
20:08think we can tell you enough how we admire your inner strength and determination in sharing the
20:14quest for water safety in memory of hayden both you and brogan your sister are truly inspirational
20:21we do have one final surprise for you megan um seen as you're here you might as well
20:38have you stick around for a bit longer and come to the show tonight if you're free
20:43i'm free and listen brogan not to leave you left out the next time you do something i'm sure we can
20:49organize for you to come and see us as well we just want to say thank you once again and to give
20:54you your one big thank you i just love a one big thank you i'm so happy we could do that for megan
21:20and brogan and next thursday we will be dedicating a whole program to celebrating extraordinary people
21:26just like them with a festive one big thank you special we'll have surprises galore including a bit
21:31of disney magic as well all will be revealed next week yes and we would love to hear about anyone you
21:37know who goes that extra mile over christmas spreading festive joy throughout their community
21:42because we want to make their christmas incredibly special so please do get in touch tell us all about them
21:47at one big thank you at bbc.co.uk all right then now then joe you know we've had lots of people on
21:54talking food right and at christmas time it's all about roast potatoes and how you make your gravy and
21:59all of that but you are kind of looking ahead to the new year it's healthy protein based but first of
22:05all please tell me that you do indulge over christmas oh yeah listen i i'm a massive foodie i love
22:11exercise i love healthy food but i'm also you know i just want to smash it christmas day in boxing there's
22:15like an all-you-can-eat buffet isn't it i mean it's you eat things you don't always eat like like
22:19twiglets and you know cheese and crackers and all these things that you know and even like boxes of
22:23chocolates that i love all that so yeah i go in and i just make sure after boxing day back to my
22:27workout back to the you know cooking the healthy food because i don't want to drag it out right
22:31through to you know the first of jan and that's what most people do so try and enjoy it no guilt and
22:35then get back to your fitness and your healthy cooking you know when you can on boxing day all the day
22:38after i think that makes the nation feel better joe see knowing that um now earlier this year you did
22:44a deep dive into ultra processed foods so interesting you also came up with this protein bar which caused
22:50a little bit of controversy but the thing about it it got people talking didn't it so what was it that
22:56you learned then about food through that process so most of my learning has come from dr chris van
23:03tolican i read his book ultra processed people which just blew my mind understanding brilliant the system
23:07and the food and how it's marketed and the ingredients and i didn't realize that a lot of
23:10these ingredients are harmful and it's not like in isolation these ingredients are harmful but it's
23:14the sheer volume and you know so much of our diet now is coming from ultra processed foods so we kind
23:18of explored that we looked into like the labeling and marketing around products and then tried to put
23:22pressure on the government to put health warnings on the food so some countries like in south america put
23:26these warnings on where it says you know high in fat salt and sugar and i obviously took that to extreme and i
23:31said like you know may increase the risk of stroke dementia you know cancers and things and that's quite
23:36a bold thing to do but it really got people talking and i suppose it started the conversation
23:40like we need to look at the ingredients we're eating and yeah and challenge it and just not
23:43see it as normalized to be eating all these foods all the time yeah well of course we'll leave that
23:47you know argument to the documentary as well but you've got a new cookbook now and that
23:52focuses on a high protein in your diet and just why is high protein so important to you
23:57well i mean it's important obviously people assume that protein's just for like bodybuilders trying
24:00to build muscle actually the body needs protein for many things even like your skin your hair nails
24:06um hormonal balance even like concentration and and you know good gut health and digestion
24:10so it's about not obsessingly trying to hit this daily protein target i think that's quite extreme
24:15but it's about just being a bit more cautious and being more wary of like am i consuming enough
24:18protein and getting into your diet so there's obviously protein from animal sources but there's
24:22lots of veggie recipes in there as well so it's not like you don't just have to be eating meat and
24:25chicken and eggs to get protein in your diet and yeah it's a really great but the recipes are
24:29amazing and it's really about family food but done in like a 15 minute time frame so quick
24:33quick and simple food the first thing i looked at was how long does this take and they're all
24:37really short but the thing is about protein it can be expensive can't it and it can be you know
24:43complicated cooking things from scratch but you find a lovely way around that in this book yeah i
24:47think you know it's about batch cooking you know getting a bit organized meal prepping a little bit
24:51and planning the meals for the weekend but you don't have to have like expensive beef mints and organic
24:56chicken breast in every single meal like it's nice to have those things but i've got lots of
24:59recipes that use like lentils and chickpeas and butter beans and things you might think are that
25:04ain't gonna taste great but you don't miss the mints just because you once you've got all the flavors
25:07and the stock and everything in there it tastes delicious so yeah it's really about family food
25:11that is quick and like i'm always thinking about that affordability thing because you don't want
25:15people to feel like i just can't eat healthy because i can't afford these ingredients so we kept
25:19the ingredients quite small and yeah accessible to most people yeah the beans are immense aren't they
25:24they are i've recently discovered them love them immense immense i love it
25:31can be immense in their eventual um yes
25:38but you mentioned family there and what i love is that you're passing a lot of this information down
25:42to the next generation that you've got a little cliff i think or a little picture of your son marley
25:47busy in the kitchen go on lads i mean what is it like seeing him following your food he's making a cheese and
25:53pesto omelet there which he makes for me and it's incredible he makes a better omelet than me and
25:57i love that you know i'm teaching my kids to enjoy food be a bit curious and adventurous but also just
26:01have a life skill you know if they don't learn to cook at home it's not like they're not likely to learn
26:05at school so i know it's stressful and it's messy and it's chaotic bringing kids into the kitchen but
26:10if you can just once every couple of weeks or once a week teach them something like that it's really
26:14going to set them up for a healthy future yeah well you do a lot of it don't you um and joe will also be
26:20inspiring us to get active over the christmas period because he is taking part in the gladiators
26:26celebrity special and we have an exclusive look at how you got on joe i haven't even seen this myself
26:30let's see it impressive swerving from joe who's got really good core strength with that wobbly bridge
26:37beneath him he throws that ball into the net for his first two points now joe seems to be getting the
