00:00So let's get to it, bring your imagination, your love, and your passion.
00:04Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're talking about whether Avengers Doomsday can finally get the MCU back on track.
00:11We'll also be discussing possible plot details, which means we'll be rolling out a warning for potential spoilers.
00:17This is the fight of our lives.
00:20What actually is Avengers Doomsday?
00:22Before contemplating whether this movie could be the MCU's saving grace, we should talk about what it's all about.
00:28Through a very special story, Joe and I have come to potentially see a road forward with you all.
00:36The reality is, we don't know all that much.
00:39The movie is slated for a 2026 release, and is currently in the midst of production.
00:43But any major news regarding scripts or story is incredibly scarce.
00:48Fortunately for us, we can make some educated guesses.
00:52We know for a fact that Robert Downey Jr. is making his long-awaited return to the MCU.
00:56It could be the most important character in all of the Marvel Universe.
01:13Only this time, he'll be Doctor Doom.
01:18So it's a safe bet he'll be a looming presence throughout the movie.
01:21He's probably the movie's villain, or at least the shadowy figure pulling the strings.
01:26This isn't just an Avengers movie either.
01:29To announce that the film was in production, Marvel released a video revealing the cast.
01:33It was star-studded to say the least, giving us clues for what's next.
01:46Actors from the Avengers, Thunderbolts, New Fantastic Four, and Fox X-Men Universe have been confirmed for Doomsday.
01:53If this is anything to go by, we can expect lots of super-powered team-ups and nostalgic cameos.
01:59Considering that the MCU's multiverse saga is nearing its end, a multiverse-heavy movie sounds fitting.
02:05We just wish the multiverse saga had been better.
02:08No turning back now.
02:11Who said anything about turning back?
02:18For all time.
02:23Always.
02:23The current state of the MCU.
02:26Look, the MCU has been an awesome game-changer that redefined what superheroes could look like in pop culture.
02:32You think you're the only superhero in the world?
02:35Mr. Stark, you've become part of a bigger universe.
02:38You just don't know it yet.
02:40But at a certain point, we have to take off the rose-tinted glasses and acknowledge the MCU not for what it was, but for what it is currently.
02:48A gigantic, multi-million dollar franchise that's just kind of been spinning its wheels ever since Endgame.
02:54I am inevitable.
02:58The truth is, the multiverse saga has been a bit rocky.
03:01Several movies and TV shows like Quantumania and Secret Invasion failed to land.
03:06Other projects fell flat, which created an era that's been unsatisfying.
03:10If you add in the consistent trend of wonky CGI, uninteresting characters, and subpar writing, then you've got one pretty concerned fanbase.
03:20Wait, so you're the one who's making all the decisions here?
03:23The multiverse should be an exciting concept, but it's been run into the ground by Marvel.
03:28What do you know about the multiverse?
03:30The multiverse.
03:32This had his theories.
03:33He believed it was real and dangerous.
03:37This could be a saga that explores incredibly interesting alternate realities, and dives into infinite possibilities with its storytelling.
03:45Instead, what we've mostly gotten are tired cameos from actors who don't add anything to the story besides nostalgia.
03:51I'm lame compared...
03:52Like, I fought a Russian guy in a...
03:54Like, a rhinoceros machine.
03:56Can we rewind it back to the I'm lame part?
03:58Because you are not...
03:59We all loved the three Spider-Men in No Way Home, but how many more times can they play that card?
04:05And why did What If, the show that was supposed to explore the vast multiverse, basically just turn into the adventures of Captain Carter and Friends?
04:13Thanks, Cap.
04:14What are new friends for?
04:15This whole saga lacks direction.
04:17Connectivity is super important for a shared universe.
04:20Let's just take the L and move on!
04:23It's kind of the whole reason for doing one.
04:26Well, that and to make money.
04:27Sadly, several current projects feel completely isolated from one another.
04:31It's like the MCU doesn't know who their big bad is.
04:34Granted, some of these problems are not entirely Marvel's fault.
04:37How many did you call?
04:40All of us.
04:42If you remember, Kang the Conqueror was being set up to be the big bad until the actor portraying him, Jonathan Majors, landed in some controversy.
04:51And Marvel had to pivot, which they did by getting Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.
04:55With Doom now set as the new big bad, Doomsday seems like it's got a lot going for it.
05:00Right?
05:00What can I tell you?
05:02I like playing complicated characters.
05:05Pros and cons for the movie.
05:07Again, we don't know much about the plot yet, but we can make some solid assumptions.
05:11Based on the recent casting announcements, this movie will have a huge slew of people.
05:16Is that everyone?
05:17What, you want it more?
05:18We're talking characters from The Avengers, Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four, and X-Men.
05:23Maybe our heroes will learn how to work together in this movie.
05:26Or maybe they'll butt heads.
05:28Excuse me, I'm Eric Lentra.
05:30James Xavier.
05:31Go f*** yourself.
05:32If that's the case, this movie could take a page or two from the comic Avengers vs. X-Men.
05:37That storyline saw those two teams clashing in some big ways.
05:40Regardless of what happens, though, the stacked roster alone should be more than enough to get people talking.
05:45But it's better this way, you have to trust me.
05:48But what about downsides?
05:49Well, ironically, that gigantic cast of characters could also be a negative.
05:54Always a way out.
05:56You know, you may not be a threat, but you better stop pretending to be a hero.
06:00Seeing the X-Men from the past interacting with the Avengers of today will definitely lead to some cool moments,
06:06but the movie could easily get overcrowded very fast.
06:09This is a blockbuster basically guaranteed to have an influx of fanservice-y moments and cameos.
06:14Okay, look at you all.
06:18You must be the others.
06:20Terrific.
06:20While that might not necessarily kill a film, it could be a huge derailment to the story.
06:25The large cast also means it'll be an all-out war for precious screen time.
06:30No matter how you want to slice it, some characters will be lost in the shuffle with the scale this movie will have.
06:35Because of that, Doomsday could end up being the cinematic equivalent of just smashing a bunch of action figures into each other and seeing what happens.
06:42Do you really want to punch your way out of this one?
06:45Will Doomsday make money?
06:47If Doomsday soars at the box office, it'll be a clear sign that Marvel is back.
06:52But can this project reach the financial heights of its predecessors?
06:55The price tag is on the expensive side, to put it lightly.
07:08For pre-production specifically, reports indicated that the amount of money spent by Marvel Studios for Doomsday was roughly $8 million.
07:15It's because he's already made up his mind.
07:17Boy, you know me so well.
07:18That's about triple what they poured into the pre-production costs for Quantumania.
07:22Making Infinity War and Endgame cost the studio about a billion dollars.
07:26If Doomsday is expected to top those juggernauts, it's gonna cost Marvel a pretty penny.
07:31Good luck.
07:33That being said, we shouldn't be too gloom and doom, pun intended.
07:37Endgame shattered box office records and became a cultural phenomenon.
07:41A long way from Budapest.
07:42While we don't know if Doomsday can do the same, it's almost a guarantee that this movie will make a large profit.
07:48Come on, this is still an Avengers movie.
07:51That brand has some serious staying power with the general audience.
07:54However, commercial success is not gonna be the only important factor.
07:58Yeah.
07:59Can Marvel successfully follow Doomsday up if it's good?
08:02So, what if Avengers Doomsday becomes a roaring success?
08:06What if it's an absolute triumph at the box office and a cinematic masterpiece praised by fans and critics alike?
08:12If it's all the same to you, I'll have that drink now.
08:20Obviously, that's a great hypothetical, but they still need to follow that movie up with Secret Wars.
08:25It'd be really easy to shout from the rooftops that the MCU is back if Doomsday is a hit.
08:30The past has shown us the problem with jumping the gun.
08:33Deadpool and Wolverine was a blockbuster that made over a billion dollars
08:36and cemented itself as the highest grossing R-rated movie ever.
08:39I am a messiah.
08:42I am a Marvel Jesus.
08:48It stood out as a shining light in the saga.
08:51Because of that, many fans believed the MCU was back to its former glory.
08:55Heck, even the Agatha show that came out a few months later was a solid series.
08:59Then the MCU's next cinematic outing, Captain America Brave New World, was a bit of a dud.
09:04It wasn't an atrocity, but it definitely wasn't a home run with the fans.
09:08That disappointment kind of reignited everybody's fears.
09:16Even if we get a great Avengers movie out of this, Marvel needs to make sure future projects can sustain a certain level of quality.
09:23The point we're trying to make is that it's hard to hinge the entire success of a franchise of this size on just one movie.

09:48Final verdict.
09:49Is Avengers Doomsday going to be what brings life back to the MCU?
09:53Well, probably not.
09:55But wait, don't bring out your pitchforks just yet.
09:57This is going to end well.
09:58The reason we say probably not is because there'll need to be more than just Doomsday to get the MCU back up and running.
10:04Remember, this is essentially part one of a two-parter.
10:08That means that Avengers Secret Wars also has to completely knock it out of the park.
10:12The multiverse saga needs to conclude on a high note.
10:16Really?
10:17No.
10:18Oh, whatever.
10:19Then, if we're being honest, Marvel needs to finally move on from the multiverse.
10:23Getting fans to be excited about the MCU again isn't necessarily hard, but keeping that excitement going is what's tricky.
10:30To sustain the hype, they have to go back to the basics.
10:33They have to tell interesting stories with something to say rather than chase fads.
10:38In short, Doomsday can be what jolts the MCU out of its current coma.
10:42Yet subsequent projects need to be consistent hits to prevent the franchise from flatlining again.
10:48Do you think Doomsday can save the MCU?
10:58Let us know in the comments.
10:59The idea was to bring together a group of remarkable people, see if they could become something more.
11:09See if they could work together when we needed them to, to fight the battles that we never could.
