00:00A move that looks set to turn off the tap on Russian gas forever, praised by the European Commission president.

00:11This is the dawn of a new era, the era of Europe's full energy independence from Russia.

00:19After pledging to reduce Russian energy intake following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine,

00:24the share of Russian gas in EU imports has fallen from 45% in 2021 to 12% as of October this year.

00:34But while Europe has slashed pipeline deliveries, it's partly turned to liquefied natural gas,

00:39shipped by sea, unloaded at ports and fed back into the network.

00:44Imports of Russian LNG into the EU are still expected to amount to 15 billion euros this year.

00:50Under Wednesday's agreement, Russian pipeline gas will be phased out by the end of September 2027

00:57and LNG imports banned by the end of next year.

01:00The Commission also wants to end remaining imports of Russian oil with legislation to be proposed next year.

01:07But this agreement is already facing challenges from member states.

01:11Slovakia, still highly reliant on gas and oil from Moscow, is weighing its legal options,

01:17while Hungary's foreign minister says his country already has a plan.

01:22As soon as the Repower EU plan is formally adopted,

01:25we will immediately challenge it before the EU Court of Justice.

01:28Legal proceedings will start without delay.

01:31Preparatory work is already underway.

01:33We will do everything necessary to defend Hungary's energy security.

01:38Meanwhile, the Kremlin has condemned the move,

01:40saying it would doom Europe to becoming less competitive and lead to higher prices for consumers.
