00:00All right, Jenny.
00:01Three, two, one, go!
00:07Yay!
00:09Perfect!
00:13For me and Dave, every day is a lot of moving parts.
00:17With five growing kids.
00:18No!
00:19Do not go in the house!
00:21All right, quick break on.
00:23Whoa!
00:24Whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:26A working farm full of our beloved animals.
00:29Sometimes cows don't do what you want them to.
00:30It's the strangest thing.
00:32I think I have to go in and scoop some poop, too.
00:35A renovation business and running two stores
00:41in our community of Northwest Arkansas.
00:43I think we did it.
00:45We definitely did it.
00:47We stay pretty busy and sometimes a little stressed.
00:51God!
00:51Oh, my Lord, David!
00:53But when your job is helping your neighbors
00:55transform their lives.
00:58Oh, my God!
00:59By transforming the place they call home, they crush it.
01:04Oh, my God, it's so pretty.
01:06Oh!
01:07It's not really work at all.
01:09Just another day in this crazy, beautiful life we call ours.
01:12Oh, my God!
01:13Thank you so much!
01:14Hey, babe, we have got to get going to the Kettner's.
01:29Where are you?
01:30All right.
01:31I'm just cleaning up.
01:32I'll be here in a second.
01:33All right.
01:33See you in a minute.
01:34We have got to go to the Kettner house.
01:36We are about to start a renovation for them.
01:38It was actually about a year ago, almost exactly, that they were hit by a tornado.
01:44Hey!
01:45I was just thinking.
01:46It's been about a year, probably.
01:48It's been that long?
01:49Yep, this was it.
01:50Look.
01:51May 27th.
01:52Oh, my gosh.
01:53Look at that.
01:54That's their house.
01:56Ms. Kettner, Nicole, was Luke's preschool teacher last year.
02:00Yep.
02:01And at the end of the year, we had tornadoes rip through town.
02:04Devastation in northwest Arkansas as deadly tornadoes rip through our area.
02:10A tornado hit dead-on on their house.
02:13We came out here with all of our kids, with a lot of our school, and worked for a couple
02:17days just helping them do anything that we could.
02:21They just now got the insurance money, so they're ready to get started on the renovation.
02:26So let's get dressed and go.
02:28We thought this would get going a couple months at the latest after the storm, but it's been
02:33a long year with insurance, fighting, trying to get the money to do this renovation.
02:39As soon as we found out that everything was good to go, we're just, hey, we'll meet you
02:43over there right now.
02:44We will start demoing today on your house.
02:47Yes.
02:48Okay.
02:49Oh, hey, guys.
02:50Hey.
02:51Did you guys ever think contractors would show up at your house?
02:56Hey, how are you?
02:57Good to see you.
02:58How's it going?
02:59We're here.
03:00Good to see you.
03:01One year later.
03:02Almost exactly a year.
03:03Really?
03:04You guys know Matt and Tim, right?
03:05Hi.
03:06Yep.
03:07We brought them today because it's been a year.
03:09You guys are ready to get back in, so we're just going to get started as we talk.
03:12Really, the four of us can get working and you two can talk about it.
03:14No, you can't get working because you don't know what you're doing.
03:16Let's just start outside.
03:17Oh, dude.
03:18Wow.
03:19Just tell them how you really know.
03:20See what I'm saying?
03:21Not that you don't know what you're doing in general.
03:22We don't know what we're doing here.
03:23We have to listen to them.
03:24This is what I get all the time.
03:25Oh, gosh.
03:26So I'm Tyler Kettner.
03:27This is my wife, Nicole.
03:28We've been married for 16 years.
03:30We have five kids.
03:31Our family is very outdoorsy, very active.
03:34We try to keep them outside as much as we can.
03:36That was a large part of the appeal of this property that we bought.
03:39The land was just beautiful.
03:41We want to get chickens one day.
03:42We want to get cows.
03:43We want to have a place for our kids to play.
03:46But the house was the compromise.
03:48It's a little bit smaller than what we were used to, especially having five kids.
03:51Unfortunately, we only got to live here for about seven months before the tornado hit.
03:56It was terrifying.
03:57It's the middle of the night.
03:58We had to get in his car because my car was trapped, and we were able to get out of here.
04:02And so that night, we drove all the way to Little Flock, which is quite a ways away.
04:06And we got trapped by trees there.
04:09And so we actually got out and walked a mile to our friend's house in the rain with our five kids and our dog.
04:14It was about 3 a.m. in the morning by that time.
04:17And so we made it to safety.
04:18And then about 6 in the morning, we couldn't take it any longer.
04:21We came back to the house.
04:22And so seeing the devastation then was very surreal.
04:26So much of the roof was blown off.
04:28The house was full of water.
04:29And it was just all destroyed, trees down everywhere.
04:32Like, we just didn't know what was going to happen next.
04:35We were able to get into a rental house.
04:38It seemed like our insurance, they were just delaying, delaying, delaying, delaying.
04:42And so after about six months, we decided it was time to hire an attorney.
04:46It has been a very hard year, not only for Tyler and I, but for our children.
04:50But this, Dave and Jenny doing our house, has brought so much light.
04:54It alleviates stress for our family knowing that Dave and Jenny are on the renovation,
04:58and they're starting soon, and we'll be back in our house very soon.
05:01All right.
05:02So you guys have $153,000 for the renovation, right?
05:05Yes.
05:06Yep.
05:07I mean, you guys got the new roof, right?
05:08Yes.
05:09OK.
05:10I know you guys always use this door as your entrance, right?
05:13Correct.
05:14But this is the front door.
05:15We never really utilized this porch that much.
05:17Yeah.
05:18We just didn't use that door.
05:19Right.
05:20We had a neighbor come and knock on the door, and I was, like, scared.
05:22I was like, why is anybody coming to this door?
05:24Like, that's not.
05:25I mean, obviously, we need to make this livable,
05:27because you haven't lived here in a year.
05:29Yeah.
05:30But we're here, so let's figure out what we want to do, like, hopes and dreams.
05:32I like everything.
05:33So whatever you think would be best.
05:36Is this actual cedar?
05:37I believe so.
05:38Yeah, it is.
05:39It definitely is.
05:40Is it in good condition?
05:41I think this part is probably the best condition around that side,
05:44where the tornado, more ripped stuff, there might be a lot more cracks.
05:47Oh, yeah.
05:48All right.
05:49So is this what it, this is what it ripped off?
05:51Yes.
05:52So we don't know what happened to it.
05:54We never saw it again, don't know where it ended up.
05:56So out here, I mean, we know we just need to figure out a way to make the entryway make more sense and be more functional.
06:02We'll add a new circular driveway leading up to what we'll now call the front door.
06:06We just need to clean everything up.
06:08We need new soffits, new windows, and a fresh coat of paint to really bring this house back to life.
06:13But I know we have a lot to do inside, so I feel like let's figure that out first,
06:17and then we can finalize what we're doing out here.
06:19Yeah.
06:20That sounds great.
06:21All right.
06:22So let's go check it out.
06:24Okay.
06:25Well, first of all, as we're standing here, I feel like we should center that door up.
06:30We do want more windows.
06:31If possible.
06:32There's very few windows in the house.
06:33Yeah.
06:34Yeah.
06:35And like, it would be amazing to have at least two windows or one giant one here.
06:39Yes.
06:40Yeah.
06:41Get some more light.
06:42The paint colors?
06:43Not our favorite.
06:44Just terrible.
06:45That was our nice shirt.
06:46Not our favorite.
06:47Terrible.
06:49We also would like a wood stove.
06:51Oh, yes.
06:52Just for power outages, things like that.
06:55Yeah.
06:56Let's talk about the floors.
06:57We have five kids.
06:58We have a dog.
06:59So we need a tough floor, but like a lighter floor I think would be good.
07:03For the living room, we can fit in everything you want.
07:06I agree, as a mother of five, that the durable floors are a must.
07:09And I think a large double door and more windows are totally doable to bring in more light.
07:15And finally, new paint and a wood burning stove that you can rely on to keep the house warm even if the power goes out.
07:21Okay, so whatever flooring we do is going to just flow all the way through the house.
07:25Yes, sir.
07:26That would be great.
07:27Yes, sir.
07:28Yes, please.
07:29And then the kitchen.
07:30So is this kind of from here back?
07:31Is that where the roof was ripped off?
07:33Yes.
07:34Yeah, the roof was gone.
07:35So I'm assuming this whole kitchen is going.
07:37Oh, yeah, it's trash.
07:38I hate these cabinets and that window won't even close all the way.
07:42Are you wanting to keep kind of the layout or are you wanting to reorient?
07:45Not at all.
07:46Okay.
07:47We would love to move the sink over underneath the window there.
07:49Yes, so it's like an owl.
07:50Yes.
07:51Yes, yes.
07:52And then we'd have more open space here, obviously.
07:54Yes.
07:55And then we can put cabinets along that wall on either side of the window.
07:57Exactly.
07:58Just because the house is on the smaller side.
08:00Right.
08:01And so storage.
08:02Yes.
08:03Is one thing that we definitely don't have a lot of.
08:05Taking all the cabinets all the way to the ceiling, just utilizing all the space.
08:08Yes, sir.
08:09Do you want an island or would you rather have a center table?
08:11No, I would rather have a table.
08:12Yes.
08:13We would rather have a table and keep it open.
08:14Yes.
08:15Yes.
08:16Any preference on colors or anything?
08:17No?
08:18Whatever you want to do.
08:19Yeah.
08:20Dave and Jenny are very creative people and we're not.
08:24And so we are very happy to hand the reins over to them as far as the design.
08:29We know it's going to be an improvement and we know it's going to be fantastic once they're
08:33done.
08:34For the kitchen, we'll reorient the cabinets to take advantage of this extra wall space.
08:38We can bring in some color on the cabinets and a few modern appliances that really pop.
08:43And then with a large table in the middle, I think this can easily give us enough space
08:46for your whole family.
08:47Okay.
08:48So then your room's behind.
08:49I guess you guys could start.
08:50Yeah.
08:51Let's get rolling on this.
08:52Here.
08:53Okay.
09:02All right.
09:03So bedroom.
09:04I feel like you probably want something a little more soothing and soft in your bedroom.
09:07Yes.
09:08Yes.
09:09Okay.
09:10Again, we just have the one window.
09:11Yeah, that'd be nice to do more windows.
09:12It would be nice to have another larger or another window.
09:14Okay.
09:15I think that would help.
09:16In your room, nothing too crazy.
09:17Just carrying over the new flooring, add in a new window, and paint the walls maybe
09:21a softer, more soothing shade of blue.
09:24So this is your bathroom.
09:26Oh, yes.
09:27I don't know if you could make it happen.
09:29A toilet room.
09:30Water closet.
09:31Water closet.
09:32Yeah, I was thinking that.
09:33I was thinking if we turned the bathroom, could we make that a water closet?
09:35I don't know.
09:36I think we can reorient the space.
09:37If there's enough room for a water closet and two sinks, that would be perfect.
09:41I do.
09:42Yeah.
09:43How's it going?
09:44Oh, my goodness.
09:45Looks good.
09:46That's awesome.
09:47You want to help?
09:48Yeah.
09:49Yeah, I'll help.
09:51Look at that.
09:52We don't usually have this where the homeowners come and help demo, but I figured you've been
09:57wanting to get this started for a while.
09:59Yeah.
10:00So it's been a long time coming.
10:02It has been almost a year, and it's been a struggle for the Kettners with insurance
10:07fighting, trying to get the money to do this renovation.
10:10I mean, I'd imagine Tyler has some frustrations that he needs to get out.
10:14And sometimes a sledgehammer is the best way to do it.
10:19But you know what?
10:20We are underway.
10:21Demo has begun, and from here, it's just quick pace moving forward.
10:26Okay, so obviously now we need to talk kids' rooms.
10:29Okay.
10:30This is the fun part.
10:31This is the girls' room.
10:32Okay.
10:33Because it's the smaller one, and there's only two of them.
10:34Yes.
10:35Okay.
10:36So we had a bunk bed over here.
10:37Yeah.
10:38I was going to say, it's a tight space.
10:39Is that what you're thinking again?
10:40Bunk beds?
10:41Yes.
10:42Yeah.
10:43Okay.
10:44This is the boys' room.
10:45We had a bunk bed here, and then we had a twin bed here, since there's three of them.
10:47And how old are they?
10:48They are 14, 13, and 12.
10:53Okay.
10:54So we'll figure out the best use of space here, but this really needs to be sort of a grown-up,
10:57teen boy.
10:58Yes.
10:59Not little kid.
11:00No.
11:01Not only do we make this house livable again, but we've got to make it work well for the Kettners.
11:06They have five kids, and they need more space.
11:08You know, it's like our family, where they're like, hey, we have only so much space.
11:12Yeah.
11:13Go enjoy outdoors.
11:14I know.
11:15We need to make sure the inside has as much storage as we can.
11:17I agree.
11:18That's what I'm saying.
11:19Yeah.
11:20Summer just started, so we need to wrap this project up as soon as possible so that the
11:23Kettners can move in before school starts this fall.
11:26All this gets gutted out, too?
11:28Yeah.
11:29Oh, man.
11:34Hey, Matt.
11:35Yeah?
11:36Can you see above the bathroom?
11:40Oh, Dave, one of the vents is off.
11:43You see daylight?
11:44I do.
11:45Yeah.
11:46When has the roof done?
11:47Uh, August.
11:49Of last year.
11:51Look at it, Rose Bear.
11:53You got a big hole in your roof.
11:59Oh, Dave.
12:01You got a big hole in your roof.
12:03Don't add insult to injury.
12:04As if fighting the insurance wasn't hard enough, you know, trying to get the money to fix their
12:10house.
12:11They had a new roof put on just so they could protect the current structure as it is.
12:15Mm-hmm.
12:16And the guys putting it on the roof, they didn't install the cap on this vent correctly, so the
12:20inside has been exposed to the elements this whole time.
12:23So we've got to fix something that's brand new.
12:25All right.
12:26Well, we got to get that fixed.
12:28All right.
12:29Let's get back to tearing stuff out of here.
12:31Okay.
12:32Luckily, it's an easy fix, but I can just see it.
12:35They're just tired.
12:36Like, oh, yeah, there's another hole in the roof.
12:38Nothing surprises them anymore.
12:40When you're asking them what they want, you know, we just want a nice house.
12:44Yeah.
12:45They're just ready to get back into their place, and we can do that for them.
12:59What's up, Ann?
13:00Hey.
13:01How's it going?
13:02Good.
13:03Okay.
13:04So out here, then, we have the circular.
13:05Yeah, the circular driveway, which I think will be really pretty.
13:07We have the space.
13:08Yeah.
13:09And it'll really define the entrance of the house, which is what we need right now.
13:13So.
13:14Let's paint it out.
13:15Do you think we should have her try to drive the circle so we can kind of watch, like,
13:19what radius we need to make it?
13:20Probably.
13:21We are just mapping out the front driveway.
13:24Apparently, I'm the stunt driver, too, I guess.
13:27I have to, I don't know why I have to drive it.
13:29I mean, you're not a stunt driver.
13:30You're driving a circle.
13:32Yeah, but it's in grass.
13:33What if I get stuck?
13:34Oh, my gosh.
13:35You're not going to get stuck.
13:36How would you get stuck in grass?
13:37You had a lot of rain here.
13:39Yeah, you can see that good.
13:42I think if she just keeps her tire right on the paint.
13:46Okay.
13:47So we're trying to get as tight of a circle as we can.
13:53You know, like, you don't want a huge, giant circle.
13:56We want something that fits just a normal car, which is what that is.
14:00Feels kind of tight.
14:02So does it need to go wider?
14:04Wait, go around one more time.
14:05That's what I'm doing.
14:06Maybe, yeah, maybe out just a little bit, so like a truck.
14:09So maybe, yeah, like that.
14:10Oh, I'm running out where I'll start.
14:11There you go.
14:12That's perfect.
14:13Right in there.
14:14Go!
14:18Oh, my gosh.
14:19Are you serious?
14:20Jimmy, what did you do?
14:22I told you!
14:23Oh, my gosh.
14:24Did I not say?
14:25What did you do?
14:27Your back tire's off the ground.
14:29Now we're stuck here.
14:32Oh, my gosh.
14:33There's so much to do.
14:35Wait, can we talk about something first?
14:37Yes.
14:38This was the line we were wanting you to kind of stay close.
14:40You told me to go wide!
14:42You said go wide.
14:43Wide is like a foot.
14:44But I told you both this was not a good idea.
14:47I could get stuck, and you both laughed at me.
14:49Did you not see the hole right there?
14:51No, I didn't see the hole.
14:52I was looking at the green paint on the green grass.
14:56Jenny.
14:57We're not going to be able to let Jenny drive
15:00on these job sites anymore.
15:01Oh, my gosh.
15:02Sweet mercy.
15:04It's good that it happened to you and not the cat nurse
15:06when they came here to look at the house.
15:08Yeah, I guess.
15:09That's great.
15:11All right.
15:12So what are we thinking for the court here?
15:14Cat nurse love basketball.
15:16We see them at every single basketball game,
15:17where their kids are playing,
15:18when their kids aren't playing, they're there.
15:20Yep.
15:21So they asked us to come up with an idea
15:22for an area outside where the whole family could play.
15:25Yeah, I almost think we get, like, what, 15 feet from that?
15:28Kind of like where the grass is.
15:29Yeah.
15:30Mm-hmm.
15:31Like center it up there, and then, yeah,
15:32just right through here.
15:33All five of the Kettner kids play basketball.
15:35They play with our kids, so I know they'll love this court.
15:38And maybe we can even put in pickleball, too,
15:40so that way the whole family and all their friends
15:42can use this space together.
15:44So we're working on the kids' bedrooms at Kettner.
15:58There are five kiddos, three boys, two girls,
16:01and there are two very small rooms for all five of these kids.
16:06So we have to get creative with beds and storage
16:08for the kids in these spaces.
16:10This is the lower bed for the boys.
16:13Okay.
16:14On one side I was thinking we'd do the bunks,
16:16and on the other side we have a top bunk,
16:19but then underneath we can have, like, a desk,
16:21a space for homework and all that.
16:22You want a desk or do you want, like, closet space?
16:25Well, I was...
16:26There's three kids.
16:27What if underneath we did a stack of drawers,
16:31so, like, half of it is drawers and half of it's a desk?
16:34Yeah, I think... I guess that'd be fine.
16:37So the girls' room, I was thinking,
16:39on the stairs going up to the top bunk,
16:41the fronts of the stairs are drawers,
16:44again, for more storage.
16:46And then I thought on the little railing
16:49on the top of the bunk bed,
16:50we could do maybe, like, a scalloped top, like that.
16:54So what I need from you, love,
16:55is to draw what the scallop is.
16:58I'm just trying to do something different
17:00on the girls' bunk beds,
17:01because Nicole mentioned
17:02they both really like very girly things,
17:04so I want their room to be very girly,
17:06and I want to just add
17:08some fun little scallops on their bed.
17:10We're testing it out. We'll see.
17:12I don't know. It might not work.
17:14I've got to see it. I'm a visual person.
17:16Just have to see it.
17:17It's freaking cute.
17:19Looks like a fence, but...
17:21I don't know.
17:22I don't know.
17:23It might not work.
17:24I've got to see it.
17:25I'm a visual person.
17:26Just have to see it.
17:27It's freaking cute.
17:28You don't think it's cute?
17:29I think it's adorable.
17:30Do you want to go put it on Luke's bunk bed
17:31to look at it
17:32and see how it would look on a bed?
17:33Okay.
17:37I think it could be cute.
17:40Look at the picture.
17:41I think that'd be fun.
17:42Isn't that cute?
17:43I think it's adorable.
17:44All right. Love you. You're doing great.
17:46I'm gonna go come up with some good ideas.
17:48Thanks.
17:55Demo is wrapping up at the Kettner house.
17:57Once the flooring is completely removed,
17:59we can take out the damaged ceiling drywall
18:01throughout the kitchen.
18:04Also in the main bedroom,
18:06the old shower is completely coming out
18:07so we can build the custom shower of their dreams.
18:10We're not changing the closet
18:12because they had just redone it,
18:14but we're gonna put a double vanity here
18:16instead of just a single.
18:17And then we're gonna make it to where
18:19you can have your own space in the toilet
18:21before everything was out in the open.
18:23So they'll have a little bit of privacy.
18:25It's coming along.
18:36You know, the reason we are even doing this remodel
18:38is because a tornado destroyed their home.
18:41In the middle of the storm,
18:42they had to actually run to their neighbors
18:45to go into a storm shelter.
18:47So we're surprising them
18:48with their very own storm shelter
18:49that a company has donated.
18:51It's going to be installed underground.
18:53It's a really good-sized one
18:55so that there'll be plenty of room
18:57for the entire Kettner family.
18:58If they have friends over,
18:59whomever needs to get in there,
19:00they'll be able to all fit comfortably.
19:02He can come to us.
19:03You wanna bring the Boomy out?
19:04Yeah, Boomy out.
19:05A little bit more.
19:06They are gonna feel that peace of mind
19:08and that security,
19:09and they're gonna be able to, you know,
19:11reassure their kids
19:12because they're coming back to a place
19:13that was destroyed by a storm.
19:14So there is a little bit of fear there.
19:16They haven't lived in this house since the storm.
19:18So to know that, okay, we're back home,
19:21it's beautiful,
19:22and we have this place that we can go
19:24if a storm comes through again.
19:26We'll give them that peace of mind.
19:28Moment of truth.
19:29That was right on.
19:31I'm curious to see what it looks like inside.
19:34I'm very claustrophobic
19:37because my palms are sweating a little bit
19:39just thinking about going inside of that thing.
19:41Yeah.
19:43This way.
19:45Shoot, that's nice.
19:47That is nice.
19:48There's like a little bench down there.
19:50Go check it out.
19:51I'll follow you.
19:52No, you go. I'm good.
19:53You gotta go.
19:54I'm not going in.
19:55It's for the Kettners. Come on.
19:56I'm good. You go.
19:57Just let me know how it is.
19:58Jenny, it is spacious.
20:00It's ten people.
20:01Come on.
20:02No, I don't really want to.
20:03We're the Kettners. Come on.
20:06Just don't close the door.
20:07Nobody close this door, please.
20:08We're not going to close the door.
20:10I think... I don't know.
20:11It's actually really nice.
20:13Oh, God!
20:18Come on.
20:19Just don't close the door.
20:20Nobody close this door, please.
20:21We're not going to close the door.
20:26Matt Mars, how long have you been down here?
20:28Why? Why do you think you're so funny?
20:30Gosh, you guys keep doing this stuff to me.
20:33Oh, this is nice.
20:34There's like a little bench down there.
20:36It is spacious.
20:38It's ten people.
20:39That's pretty slick.
20:41Oh, it's so nice that there's like the landscape picture
20:44that she put down there.
20:45Yeah, the scene, it's very peaceful.
20:47There's so much room.
20:48She didn't even know Matt was down there.
20:50I don't know why they keep doing this stuff to me.
20:52You did the same thing.
20:53I'm done.
20:54I gotta go.
20:55You guys.
21:01The Kettner's new casement windows have finally come in.
21:04We're massively increasing the natural light
21:06coming into this house,
21:07so it'll feel brighter, newer, and more open.
21:10In the kitchen, cabinets have been delivered
21:12and are ready to be installed.
21:14And finally, on the exterior,
21:15we have the guys painting the bricks and soffits in white
21:18and the wood panels in a contrasting blue.
21:21It's a clean, fresh color combination
21:23that'll make this house feel brand new to the Kettners.
21:27The transformation already.
21:28Can we talk about the paint, babe?
21:30Oh, it's way better.
21:31It's so good.
21:32It's already completely different.
21:34The blue outside looks awesome,
21:36and we're gonna have some blue in the bedroom.
21:38So this house, it's just all gonna tie together so well.
21:41The new double doors here.
21:42My gosh, the windows, everything looks so good.
21:44Oh, the windows look amazing.
21:46Now I want to measure for a hutch in the kitchen.
21:48Okay.
21:49I was thinking we need something on that one wall
21:51across from the run of cabinetry.
21:53We have a big blank wall.
21:55This one is 69 by 71 high.
22:00I have two hutches at Mars on Main,
22:03our new store downtown,
22:04and so I want to see if either one of those will work.
22:07I love that.
22:08You know I love that piece.
22:09Mm-hmm.
22:10Okay, now let's go to the next picture.
22:12This one.
22:13And I love that one too.
22:14That one feels...
22:15That's kind of more farm like this.
22:17It feels like this house, doesn't it?
22:18Mm-hmm.
22:19I love that one.
22:20I love it.
22:21It's like one of my actual favorite,
22:22and it looks so good in that spot in the store.
22:24So I sort of hate to sell it,
22:25but I also want it to go to a really good home,
22:27and this is a really good home,
22:28so that makes me happy.
22:29I mean, this house was seven people.
22:30We've got to add storage anywhere we possibly can.
22:33And this is a farmhouse.
22:34And this is a farmhouse.
22:35It needs to have some old pieces in here
22:37to really give it some soul.
22:39Yeah.
22:40You love the Kettners?
22:41I know.
22:42You love that piece?
22:43They'll love that piece.
22:44Well, it would be really weird
22:45if I call her every so often
22:46and just check on it
22:47and see how it's doing here.
22:48Yeah.
22:49Well, just threaten her.
22:50When we give her back the house,
22:51just say, if you ever sell this,
22:52I'll cut you.
22:53I want it.
22:55I thought you were going to say,
22:57I'll buy it back.
22:58Oh, you can say that too.
23:05We're moving quickly on the Kettners' home
23:07so they can be moved in
23:08by the time school starts.
23:09Nicole and I are also both busy moms
23:11trying to get the kids ready
23:12for a new school year.
23:14Hi.
23:15Hello.
23:16Hi.
23:17Welcome in.
23:18Thanks.
23:19How are you guys?
23:20Good, thank you.
23:21We're here for some shoes.
23:22So we're going to do double duty
23:23and coordinate our shopping trips
23:25so I can give Nicole an update
23:26on the build.
23:27Hang on, I'll be right back.
23:28Hey, guys.
23:29How are you doing?
23:30Your house is coming along.
23:32Oh, man.
23:33Are you guys excited?
23:35Yeah.
23:36Yeah.
23:37It's been a long summer.
23:38Yes.
23:39Long year.
23:40Is everything going okay?
23:41Is there, like, any major problems?
23:43No.
23:44There's really not.
23:45It is getting so close.
23:47It's so pretty and so happy.
23:49I feel like it's a happy house now.
23:50Aw.
23:51And that's what we want it to be
23:52so when you guys come back,
23:53it's not like your last memories
23:55of the house are not good.
23:56Yeah.
23:57So we need to replace those
23:58with happy ones, you know?
23:59Yeah.
24:00Like, I'm like, so, like,
24:01every time we would make that curve
24:02around to our house, like,
24:03my stomach would hurt.
24:04Yeah.
24:05Like, just seeing all the damage
24:06and stuff and so, like,
24:07it's going to be weird to drive around
24:08and have a new feeling.
24:09Have new.
24:10Yes.
24:11I'm excited for that.
24:12Yes.
24:13Right after school starts,
24:14they're going to be able to get moved back in
24:15and I know they are so ready
24:17and it was just really good to see them
24:18and catch up a little bit.
24:20We will see you very soon.
24:21We'll see you at back to school night.
24:22Yes.
24:23At school.
24:24And then we'll see you at the house.
24:25Okay.
24:26Thank you so much.
24:27Yes.
24:28Bye.
24:29We have this light, bright, durable flooring going in
24:37that will stand up to the wear and tear
24:39of the five Kettner kids.
24:40All right, I've got hardware.
24:41Oh, you've got the front door hardware.
24:42This stuff is heavy.
24:43Look how pretty this door hardware is.
24:44So the Kettner kitchen is really soft.
24:45We have this light, airy house now.
24:46It's all bright.
24:47We have all this sunshine coming in.
24:48I wanted to make everything family-friendly,
24:49so I chose dark appliances to hide messes,
24:50and Nicole loves the color blue.
24:51So I chose the shade of blue for the cabinets that I not only
24:52know she'll love, but it's also keeping with the home's
24:53farmhouse aesthetic.
24:54Oh, the fireplace is here, babe.
24:55Hey!
24:56It's probably really heavy, isn't it?
24:57What does this thing weigh?
24:58300 pounds?
24:59350?
25:00Yeah, babe, you can carry that.
25:01Yeah.
25:02I could carry it, but I don't want to show the airy house now.
25:03It's a really airy house now.
25:04It's all bright.
25:05We have all this sunshine coming in.
25:06I wanted to make everything family-friendly,
25:07so I chose dark appliances to hide messes,
25:09and Nicole loves the color blue.
25:10So I chose the shade of blue for the cabinets,
25:12that I not only know she'll love,
25:13but it's also keeping with the home's farmhouse aesthetic.
25:15Oh, the fireplace is here, babe.
25:18Hey!
25:19Oh!
25:20It's probably really heavy, isn't it?
25:21What does this thing weigh?
25:22300 pounds?
25:23350?
25:24Yeah, babe, you can carry that.
25:26I don't know what he's going on.
25:27I'll make him feel bad.
25:28That's right.
25:29Just get the tractor.
25:31It's going to heat up this entire house in the winter
25:33with just this one woodwarding stove,
25:35so it'll be a great addition.
25:37It'll be really pretty, because I love a stove,
25:39but it'll also be incredibly functional for them,
25:42which I love.
25:44So we've got to cut this down, obviously.
25:47I don't know if you can.
25:49Wait, really?
25:50We can't have this fireproof pad sticking out past the wall.
25:52It just looks weird.
25:54Hey, if we have a grinder, can we go ahead and cut this to the wall?
25:58Or do we need to leave it this size?
26:00Well, off the measure.
26:05All right, so now how far back can it go?
26:07A little bit of truth here.
26:09We have to have enough clearance with this pad underneath the fireplace stove for safety.
26:16And, you know, we don't like to have the fire too close to the LVP flooring.
26:20But now we have this pad that's sticking out into the middle of the room,
26:24and it looks a little weird.
26:26All right, so now how far back can it go?
26:31Moment of truth here.
26:32A little O.
26:33Is that O?
26:34Really?
26:35Yeah.
26:36You're not going to be able to take anything off of it.
26:39I almost think you should put it straight so we can get it back further.
26:42I know, but I don't think it would look good straight.
26:47We can notch that corner.
26:48Yeah, let's do that.
26:49I think that's a great idea, and it'll look so much better.
26:51So we're going to keep it at an angle and change out the pad so that it has 45s on each side,
26:56and it looks more intentional.
26:57This is beautiful, too.
26:58Stack some wood in there.
26:59So pretty.
27:00Thanks, everybody.
27:01Looks good.
27:02So we're here at my friend Buddy's house.
27:03Buddy is a big fan.
27:04It's a big fan.
27:05It's a big fan.
27:06It's a big fan.
27:07It's a big fan.
27:08It's a big fan.
27:09It's a big fan.
27:10It's a big fan.
27:11It's a big fan.
27:12It's a big fan.
27:13It's a big fan.
27:14It's a big fan.
27:15It's a big fan.
27:16But he is a artist, and I wanted to have Luke paint something for Nicole Kettner.
27:22There he is.
27:23Hello.
27:24Oh, my gosh.
27:25Come in.
27:26How are you?
27:27Thanks for having me.
27:28Good.
27:29How are y'all?
27:30Oh, we're good.
27:31All right.
27:32So Ms. Kettner was Luke's preschool teacher, right?
27:34Mm-hmm.
27:35And we're renovating her house.
27:37So I thought it would be fun to have a Luke-slash-Buddy original painting in Ms. Kettner's house.
27:44So Luke is-
27:45In Ms. Kettner's house.
27:46A great artist.
27:47Yes, I know.
27:48Luke, what do you want to do?
27:49What do you want to do?
27:50Penguin.
27:51Think about it.
27:52Here, sit up here.
27:53We can do a penguin.
27:54Yeah.
27:55Okay.
27:56Let's cut a piece of canvas and lay it up here and we can start drawing it out.
28:01Luke's favorite animal-slash-thing in the world is a penguin.
28:07And so he's going to make Ms. Kettner a penguin.
28:10She was his preschool teacher and I feel like I know my sister is a teacher and she loves
28:14to get gifts from her kids.
28:16And I think it would just be a nice little gift for her to have a piece of art from one
28:20of her students in her home.
28:22Oh, he's so cute.
28:23What are we going to name him?
28:24Luke.
28:25Luke.
28:26You're naming him Luke?
28:30Wow.
28:31Mm-hmm.
28:32Well, that's cute.
28:33That is cute.
28:34I think she's going to love this, Lukey.
28:36Are you satisfied with it?
28:38Take a step back and look at it.
28:40Two thumbs up.
28:41Thumbs up.
28:42Not just one.
28:43Two.
28:44Are you paying for it?
28:45Yes.
28:48He's the artist.
28:49He doesn't pay.
28:50With only two weeks left until the Kettner family moves back in, we're putting down gravel
28:58for the circular driveway to help define the front of the house.
29:01In the kitchen, electricians are running wiring for the new sconces and the countertops
29:06are here.
29:07The bunk beds are being installed in the girls' and the boys' rooms.
29:11Looks good.
29:12This is not a big room, but we've got, you know, the two on one side, one higher one
29:17right when you enter the room.
29:18It looks good.
29:19Good job.
29:20And I'm happy to say that the protective pad under the woodwarding stove has the corner
29:25notched out now, and it looks much better.
29:27Look at this bathroom.
29:28Oh, my gosh.
29:29But look, it has, they have a little bench seat.
29:31That shower is amazing.
29:32Holy cow.
29:33Isn't that pretty?
29:34They even have a door, a little toilet, the window.
29:39Yeah, this really looks good.
29:40I love it.
29:41And now that the exterior lighting is going up, this is finally starting to look like a
29:46home again.
29:47I'm so excited and scared at the same time.
29:53There they are.
29:54There they are.
29:55Okay.
29:56Oh, gosh.
29:57Oh, my gosh.
29:58Oh, my gosh.
29:59Oh, my gosh.
30:00Oh, my gosh.
30:01Oh, my gosh.
30:02Oh, my gosh.
30:03Oh, my gosh.
30:04Okay, Mike.
30:05Oh, my gosh.
30:06Oh, yeah.
30:07So the Kettner family, I know they all play basketball.
30:10They love basketball.
30:11They're just a very athletic family.
30:13But I know that this can be basketball or pickleball.
30:16We have it striped for both.
30:17Our courts are completely customizable.
30:19That's so fun.
30:19Yeah, so they'll be able to play bowl.
30:21My kids are going to be so jealous,
30:22and they're going to want to come over all the time
30:24because pickleball is super fun.
30:25Yeah, you have to have it.
30:26Exactly.
30:27Yes, OK, this is awesome.
30:29So how does this work?
30:30Yeah, so here's the template.
30:31OK.
30:32First row is going to go right down the baseline of the court.
30:35It's already in order, ready to go.
30:37And so start here and just keep on going down.
30:45Come on, Jenny, do the shuffle.
30:47Take off.
30:48There you go.
30:49See?
30:50Bravo.
30:51Look how cool this is.
30:52It looks so good.
30:53It looks so good already.
30:55Dave's on his way with the hutch.
30:57He's having to drive slowly because it's very fragile
31:00on the back of his truck.
31:01I'm getting a little bit concerned
31:03because I'm wondering where he is.
31:04Hopefully the hutch is safe.
31:05And he's safe, of course.
31:07But he should be here soon.
31:19Dave, look at this court.
31:20Look how cool this court is.
31:21Is this not amazing?
31:23I want this at our house.
31:24I know.
31:24That's what I said.
31:25I want to see this together so Tim and I can play a little two
31:28on two versus you and Matt.
31:30Ain't going to happen.
31:32He wore his tennis shoes.
31:33Yeah.
31:34His sporty cowboy boots.
31:35Those are his.
31:36You got your cut off jean shorts you can throw on so we can.
31:38Yeah, buddy.
31:39OK, should we go move the hutch inside real quick?
31:43Just want to see it in there.
31:45We got this hutch from our store.
31:46It's an antique that we found.
31:48And it actually is one of my favorite pieces.
31:51Kind of hated to part with it.
31:53But as Dave tells me, that's the point of a store
31:55is to actually sell stuff.
31:58Oh, it's perfect.
32:01Let's go back to work.
32:02Yes, let's finish this court.
32:11Last minute things.
32:15With this room and three boys in here,
32:18it's all about maximizing all the space we can.
32:21It's still got a new homework.
32:23So screw that in there.
32:25I got the two tops I'm going to set on.
32:28We are finishing up the Kettner house.
32:30We are we have furniture in.
32:32It's all the last minute details.
32:33A lot of stuff needs to happen to make it feel like a home.
32:37So yeah, we got a lot to do.
32:42This is a kitchen.
32:44I feel like that is fit for seven people.
32:47It took almost a year to get to a point
32:49where they were able to even start fixing their home.
32:54The bedrooms were a little bit of a challenge.
32:56Like Jenny said, it's all about functionality
32:58with a family of seven.
33:00You've got to figure out all the spaces
33:01and make everything work.
33:03But I think they turned out great.
33:05Yeah, I mean, they obviously were traumatized by that night
33:09and what happened during that storm.
33:11And so to have this storm shelter in their backyard
33:14where they can go and they can come home and feel safe,
33:17it means a lot.
33:18That really does.
33:23All right, kids.
33:24What are you guys excited for?
33:26Our room.
33:28I'm so excited and scared at the same time.
33:32OK, this is it.
33:34Oh, my gosh.
33:35It's nice to be here any second, too.
33:36Kind of emotional after over a year.
33:39I've been out of this house.
33:41I can't see it.
33:43I see it.
33:43I see it.
33:44There they are.
33:44There they are.
33:45OK.
33:45Oh, gosh.
33:46OK.
33:47Wow.
33:48New place.
33:49Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
33:54I see it.
33:54I see it.
33:55New place.
33:56Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
33:59What?
33:59What?
34:00What?
34:00What?
34:01What?
34:01What?
34:02What?
34:03What?
34:04There's a basketball court.
34:05What?
34:06What?
34:06What?
34:08What?
34:09What's the game?
34:09Oh, my gosh.
34:11What?
34:12What?
34:13Great to see y'all.
34:14Oh, my gosh.
34:15Oh, my gosh.
34:15Oh, my gosh.
34:16Oh, my gosh.
34:17Oh, my gosh.
34:18Oh, my gosh.
34:19Go, go, go, go, go, go, boys.
34:21Go, go.
34:22Go, go, go.
34:22Go over there first.
34:23That's where I would have gone.
34:24Oh, my gosh.
34:25What?
34:26What?
34:27Oh, my goodness, boys.
34:28So cool.
34:29Oh, my gosh.
34:31Pickleball, too?
34:32Yes, pickleball.
34:33That pickleball court rolls right in, right out.
34:36That is awesome.
34:37This is so much better than I ever thought it'd be.
34:41Yay.
34:41I can't even believe this.
34:42Oh, my goodness.
34:43Oh, I'm so excited.
34:44That's incredible.
34:45OK, there's so much more to see.
34:46Come on, we'll show you this out here real quick.
34:48OK, so.
34:49Aw.
34:50Is it a tornado shelter?
34:51Yes.
34:52You're set.
34:53Oh, my gosh.
34:55Oh, my gosh.
34:56Wow.
34:57Go check it out.
34:57Oh.
34:58You want to go down?
34:59Step down in there.
34:59Somebody go down in there.
35:00What?
35:01Oh, wow.
35:02That's so cool.
35:03It's tall enough I can stand.
35:04Wow.
35:05I can't stand.
35:06That's awesome.
35:07There's benches.
35:07We don't have to bring our own chairs.
35:09That's so cool.
35:10There's a picture.
35:11I know.
35:11I love it.
35:12We tried to make it peaceful.
35:13Yeah.
35:14That's so good.
35:15No, that's amazing.
35:17You're welcome, sweetheart.
35:19Oh, you're so welcome.
35:20Don't hit your heads, kids.
35:22We changed the shape of the driveway so that people can actually
35:25come in and go around, and it really creates the front of your house.
35:29Yes.
35:29I love this.
35:30Because before, you can tell.
35:33Now, the front of the house is the front of the house.
35:34Exactly.
35:35You can use this in front of the house.
35:36Yay.
35:37That's awesome.
35:38The dark blue for the siding with the black windows, the black door,
35:42and then painted the brick white, so it just really looks like a classic house.
35:46Oh, yeah.
35:47And it feels so much more defined on this front porch just with the paint
35:50and the new lights.
35:51Absolutely.
35:52That's amazing.
35:53Aw.
35:54Okay, so I assume you guys want to go play for a little bit.
35:56So you guys go play.
35:57We'll show your appearance inside, and then you can come in when you're done playing.
35:59How about that?
36:00Sounds good.
36:01All right, let's go.
36:02Okay.
36:03All right.
36:04Oh, no.
36:05Oh, the kitchen.
36:06Well, the colors, the colors, that's perfect.
36:07I know, it's so pretty.
36:08I love it.
36:09It looks beautiful.
36:10It's hard to recognize the place.
36:11Yeah, go in.
36:12Go on.
36:13I love the colors.
36:14I can't believe it's the same house.
36:15I love the stove.
36:16I love the stove.
36:17It's beautiful.
36:18I love the stove.
36:19It looks beautiful.
36:20Look at that thing.
36:21Is that the fridge?
36:22Yes.
36:23Oh, my goodness.
36:24Yes.
36:25Oh, my goodness.
36:26We went with a big fridge.
36:27You're family.
36:28You need a big fridge.
36:29Oh, my goodness.
36:30Yes.
36:31Like five gallons of milk a week.
36:32Yes.
36:33A huge, awesome sink.
36:34Yes.
36:35Oh, yes.
36:36Oh, my goodness.
36:37Under the window.
36:38I just don't even have words.
36:39Mm-hmm.
36:40Obviously, we reoriented everything, and, you know, we filled in the holes in the ceiling.
36:44Yes.
36:45That helps.
36:46So, yes, you notice the new floor.
36:47We wanted it light and easy to take care of, so you don't have to worry.
36:52It's super easy to clean.
36:53Getting rid of this island and doing the center table in this kitchen makes so much sense.
36:58And we have the same thing in our house, and it's just so nice, because it's like, this is the heart of your home right here.
37:03And so you want this to be the center of your kitchen.
37:08Oh, look, look.
37:09So we got this piece for you from our store, actually.
37:12Oh, yeah.
37:13This is an old, an antique piece that we got, but it just adds a little bit of character.
37:17I feel like once we had the kitchen in, it was like, it was just all too new and too perfect.
37:21Oh, yeah.
37:22So you needed a little bit of something vintage, so that's a nice little, it looks really pretty, and it fits perfectly there.
37:28But it also has more storage for you as well.
37:30Is that everything?
37:31Okay, okay, so then go check out your living room.
37:33Yeah.
37:34Okay.
37:35Oh, man.
37:36Oh, my gosh.
37:37Oh, wow.
37:38I just love this.
37:39I can't believe that.
37:40This is all amazing that you can do with this.
37:41The best.
37:42That thing looks beefy.
37:43It is.
37:44It'll heat up your whole house.
37:45It's the best.
37:46Oh, I imagine, yeah.
37:47And it's cozy in the winter.
37:48It'll be really cozy.
37:49Well, it's beautiful.
37:50Yeah.
37:51It's amazing.
37:52And also, you notice we put the French doors here.
37:53We swapped those, what used to be here.
37:55We have more windows here.
37:56I love the windows.
37:57The windows are amazing.
37:58So much natural light.
37:59Okay, so you want to start seeing some bedrooms now?
38:01Yes.
38:02Sure.
38:03All right.
38:04Did you see this?
38:05I just saw it.
38:06Oh, my goodness.
38:07Do you have a concept from Luke?
38:09Custom painting from Luke.
38:10Yes.
38:11That's awesome.
38:12Oh, my goodness.
38:13He, I, penguins, I mean.
38:15He's the penguin.
38:16Yes.
38:17Well, he wanted, he wanted to give you something.
38:19He was very, he's like, I want to give something to Miss Kettner, too.
38:21Oh, wow.
38:22Oh, my gosh.
38:23They're going to love it.
38:24Oh, my goodness.
38:25It's beautiful.
38:26That's beautiful.
38:27Did you make this bed?
38:28I did.
38:29Oh, my goodness.
38:30The steps are all drawers, so they have extra drawers and storage.
38:32They've added the little scallops.
38:33I think they're adorable on the bed.
38:34I know you said the girls love, like, anything super girly and cute and fun and sweet.
38:49And so this room, to me, feels just so sweet.
38:52It's perfect.
38:53Yes.
38:54The boys room was a challenge.
38:55It was a challenge.
38:56Three boys.
38:57All right.
38:58Let's see.
38:59Yeah.
39:00Oh, my gosh.
39:03Oh, my goodness.
39:06This is amazing.
39:07Wow.
39:08I've built these also.
39:10We have the desk for them and a built-in dresser because, again, it's all about storage.
39:15We know that they need storage.
39:16Yes.
39:17They're going to lose their minds.
39:18They're going to do the coolest thing ever.
39:19Yes.
39:20This is so cool.
39:21Wow.
39:22Wow.
39:23I love it.
39:26Wow.
39:27We got an extra window.
39:28Oh, I didn't see that.
39:29We only had one before.
39:30Yes.
39:31Now it's symmetrical.
39:32Yeah.
39:33It looks so much better.
39:34I love the color, too.
39:35Oh, good.
39:36Yes.
39:37Yeah, this color is beautiful.
39:38I feel like this room now feels really, really cozy and, like, just peaceful.
39:42Yes.
39:43Which I know did not...
39:44You left with...
39:45Chaos.
39:46A little bit of chaos.
39:47And it's just...
39:48We wanted you to come home to a place that's restful and peaceful and joyful.
39:52Oh, yes.
39:53What?
39:54What?
39:55What?
39:56Oh, man.
39:57They actually...
39:58They fit two sinks.
39:59I know.
40:00Yeah.
40:01And I wanted a toilet room.
40:02Yes.
40:03Did the door shift?
40:04The door did shift, which is how we got the two sinks.
40:06Got it.
40:07Yes.
40:08We shifted all of this.
40:09Yes.
40:10I love this.
40:11This is beautiful.
40:12This is amazing.
40:13That's our entire checklist.
40:14Yes.
40:15Yes.
40:16It's a hundred times better than anything I could have imagined, honestly.
40:20We've been out of our house for 15 months.
40:23We were yearning to get back home, and so seeing it finally done is a huge relief, a
40:29huge load off of our minds.
40:30I feel it's like a dream come true.
40:32Oh.
40:33Oh, man.
40:34Oh, wow.
40:35Yeah, our kids have already said that.
40:38They're like, well, what if we get back in our house and another tornado comes?
40:41And so I feel like with the shelter that they're going to feel a lot more safe and secure now.
40:46Oh, my God.
40:48Isn't it so odd?
40:49Come on in.
40:50Come on in.
40:51Come on in.
40:52What?
40:53Wait.
40:54This is giving our kids such a great future.
40:56Oh, my God.
40:57Do you guys love it?
40:59I can tell that they're already excited and that their hope is restored.
41:02Oh.
41:03Oh, my God.
41:06They're going to know that all that pain that we went through was worth it because of Dave
41:10and Jenny.
41:11Who's where?
41:12Yeah, who's on your bed?
41:13All your beds.
41:14I want you.
41:15I want you.
41:16I want to have you.
41:17I guess I'm up there, then.
41:18We said from the very beginning they are just such a joyful, happy, sweet family that
41:22we wanted this home to feel like that.
41:24It didn't feel like that after the storm, of course.
41:26But this home now feels really light and joyful, which really feels like the Kettner family.
41:33And that's what you want.
41:35Okay.
41:36All right.
41:37Thank you, guys.
41:38Bye, guys.
41:39Bye.
41:40Bye.
41:41I mean, what a great family.
41:43The impact that Nicole has had in Luke's life, I mean, teaching him through preschool.
41:48They're so giving.
41:49And to be able to give them their home back that I think will really function for them
41:54for a long time to come.
41:56Yeah.
41:57It was a good feeling.
41:58Yeah.
41:59But the take a long time to get?
42:00Yeah.
42:01That's good.
42:02Ha-hah.
42:03Yeah.
42:04We can't keep it.
42:05It was a long time.
42:06I think.
42:07It was just a long time to go out now.
42:08Yeah.
42:09It's a long time to go.
42:11Yeah.
42:12Right.
