We Were Heroes: An Immigrant Superhero Origin Story. A lo largo del video Liu refleja mucho de sus orígenes en los objetos que nos enseña, otro ejemplo son los tés boba, los cuales describe como la definición de Asian-America. Conoce más en este video.

00:00Spaulding is no longer going to be the official ball of the NBA.
00:03Is it Wilson now?
00:04This year it's going to be Wilson.
00:05Ah, dude, get this out of here.
00:07What's up, GQ? I'm Simu Liu, and these are my essentials.
00:16Hey, when we rap, it's all fair game.
00:19All right, first, we've got to talk about Asian snacks.
00:21So many Asian kids, like myself, when we brought these snacks to school,
00:24we used to get made fun of, right, because the kids wouldn't know what they were.
00:27So now we're here to demystify them.
00:29Let's start with Pockies.
00:30These are sweet.
00:31They're delicious.
00:32They're crunchy.
00:33Mmm.
00:34Yeah.
00:35Just the way I remembered them.
00:36Representation matters.
00:37And it's about more than just, you know, actors on a screen.
00:40It's about snacks.
00:41It's about food.
00:42It's about culture in every possible way.
00:44Japanese rice crackers.
00:46They're like wonderfully sweet, savory kind of rice cakes.
00:49Shredded squid.
00:51Absolutely delicious.
00:52Don't give me that look.
00:53I know you're giving me that look right now from across the screen.
00:56Mmm.
00:57Rabbit candy, otherwise known as Da Bai Tu.
01:00Delicious, iconic lemon tea drink from Vita.
01:03Lunchbox staple.
01:04And my personal favorite, shrimp crackers.
01:06Shrimp crackers is actually exactly what I was eating when I got the call that I was going
01:10to play Shang-Chi.
01:11I just woken up from a nap.
01:12It was about 6.30 in the evening.
01:14I was eating some shrimp crackers at my desk.
01:17Then I get a call from an unknown number in Burbank, California.
01:21And you know, my heart immediately skips a beat because I know that Disney head office
01:26is in Burbank.
01:27I had a feeling that this was going to be the call.
01:29And so I picked up the phone.
01:30Kevin Feige's voice on the other end telling me that I was going to be Shang-Chi.
01:34And basically realized that my life would be changed forever.
01:39So this isn't your average pair of scuffed-up, worn-in Jordans, all right?
01:44These are movie-worn Jordan accesses.
01:48You know, I'm pretty sure there is a Marvel PA out there still trying to track these down.
01:52But guess what?
01:53On my last day of shooting, I did manage to swipe them.
01:56You could tell with the, you know, these have been artistically scuffed.
01:59This is not even real dirt.
02:01But I believe that these were the shoes that were worn for the iconic bus scene.
02:05I split-kicked two bad guys with these shoes.
02:08So pretty sweet memes.
02:10They're definitely going to go in a case displayed somewhere until somebody I live with
02:15tells me that I can't keep these around anymore.
02:17Very...
02:18The shrimp crackers.
02:20So very important to travel with a solid pair of sunglasses.
02:24These are a pair of Hugo Bosses.
02:27It's always a struggle for me.
02:28I have a very wide face.
02:30And so most sunglasses I try on are just a bit too skinny.
02:34These, I feel like, frame my face kind of nice.
02:37My favorite part is that they actually snap off.
02:41And all of a sudden, you've got a very distinguished scholarly look.
02:45But then, deal with it.
02:47It seems like the more money I spend on sunglasses, the faster I lose them.
02:52There's this, like, one pair of $12 sunglasses I bought at the Santa Monica Pier, like, eight years ago.
02:57And that one seems to be the only one that never gets lost.
03:00It happens more often than I'd like to admit.
03:02I'm hoping these ones make it more than, like, the six to eight month mark.
03:06This is bubble tea, a.k.a. Boba, a.k.a.
03:11It is the iconic drink of Asian America.
03:13Just like Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings will be the iconic movie of Asian America.
03:16These are all 50% sweet.
03:18Still doesn't change the fact that they're a lot.
03:21You've got things that are a little bit more milky.
03:23So this is a jasmine milk tea right here.
03:25You have things that are a little bit more fruity.
03:27This is a strawberry green tea with a lychee jelly.
03:30And you've got some, you know, new flavors as well.
03:33This is a milk foam winter melon drink.
03:36I like a good grip with the straw.
03:38You know, I don't like them to be too small.
03:40Otherwise, you know, you can suck up a bunch at once.
03:42I really like the one boba at a time kind of situation.
03:45You just got to make sure that you cover the top and then you go in and you go in nice and firm.
03:49Just one, two, three, pop, break the seal, stir it around a little bit and go in and enjoy.
03:57Mmm, that is good boba.
03:59I never was a watch collector growing up.
04:02My dad was never into watches.
04:04I mean, we literally grew up so poor and came from like absolutely nothing.
04:08So I never really knew too much about watches.
04:11So I really just went on the look and the feel of it.
04:14One of my favorite watches to wear are IWCs.
04:17This is a Portugueseer, 14 karat gold.
04:21This is a Top Gun Edition pilot's watch, the black band.
04:24This is a 3777 pilot's watch.
04:26Such an iconic look with the metal strap.
04:28I have a couple of pieces in mind that I'd love to get my hands on, but I'm also trying not to get ahead of myself too much.
04:34I really just want to see how this movie does and hopefully, you know, get to do more.
04:39And when I get room to breathe, I'll kind of take a look at the collection and see what pieces it needs.
04:45This is basketball, obviously.
04:48I've always been a massive basketball fan.
04:50Fancy myself a player.
04:51Shout out to all of my friends back home who I hoop with.
04:55So, I mean, I played basketball all throughout high school.
04:57Was never really any good.
04:58Averaged maybe a solid six or seven points a game.
05:01Had big NBA dreams.
05:03And unfortunately at the age of 32, I feel like they're dashed.
05:07One of the main things, probably the critical factor, is I never ended up growing past like 5'11 and a half.
05:13But I was like one of the bigger kids when I was 15 or 16, so I played small forward.
05:18So I was this like tiny small forward.
05:20But that being said, the NBA all-star celebrity game still very much in the cards.
05:27I was actually flatmates with Ronnie Chang.
05:29I mean, he lived in the same hotel as me.
05:31He was like right underneath and we would play basketball.
05:35We'd play one-on-one like hours and hours a day, every day.
05:39And look, I'm just going to be real, alright?
05:41I would spot him like five points to a game to seven and I would still beat him like 90% of the time.
05:47Yeah, Ronnie Chang.
05:48Sorry, buddy.
05:49Sorry to put you on blast like that, but come on.
05:53Love Xbox.
05:54This is an Xbox Series X Black Elite controller.
05:58Perfect for any sort of Call of Duty, Halo.
06:01I mean, I love all of that.
06:02I love playing 2K, so this is an absolute travel must for me.
06:06It looks like the Lamborghini of video game controllers.
06:09Like the first Halo came out right when I was like around 14 years old and we literally played it all the time.
06:15Like me and my three friends would play.
06:17I still remember so clearly, hang them high, pistols only.
06:19Three headshots in a row with a pistol could kill you.
06:22And that's, we got so good at it, we just kept, we just kept doing it.
06:27Theragun is really important for me, whether I'm playing sports or just sitting for really long periods of time.
06:33My wonderful publicist got me these two for the start of our press tour.
06:37I've been pretty hooked ever since.
06:39It's just really important to keep the muscles loose.
06:41It's really nice when you don't have time to go to the spa, even though I feel like everybody should make time to go to the spa.
06:46You just got to treat yourself, you know?
06:49I'm usually either, you know, in the midst of writing something or editing something or reading a bunch of scripts.
06:55And the one thing that I have with me right now that I've been editing for the better part of the last year is my manuscript.
07:02So I wrote a book called We Were Dreamers and we're just going through some final edits on it right now.
07:09So the pages have markings all over them and all of that, but I carry it with me wherever I go.
07:14I read it kind of over and over and over again and I just kind of jot down any new thoughts that I have.
07:19So We Were Dreamers is going to be this beautiful story and it tells the journey of my family from China all the way to Canada and now to Hollywood.
07:29Graduating with a degree in finance and accounting, losing my job, ultimately making the decision to get started in acting and then finally taking us all the way through to that fateful call.
07:39I'm really excited to share it with the world. So it comes out May of 2022.
07:44I wonder who would play me. I wish I knew any actors that looked like me.
07:49It's just none come to mind. Well, maybe like a Brad Pitt or something.
07:53You got to travel with a comfy hoodie and this is my comfy hoodie.
07:58It was gifted to me by my stylist Jean Yang, who is wonderful. She's an amazing, badass woman.
08:05She got me my very first Fear of God hoodie, number seven.
08:09Shout out to Jean. I love you. You're the best. Fleeced interior. All right. Soft to the touch.
08:15The hoodie is also an homage to Colin Kaepernick. That's the, you know, the number seven and the colors.
08:20What he stands for is this really just, you know, speaking out for racial equality.
08:24I think it's something that, you know, I also consider myself a big advocate of.
08:28He advocates, I think, for his community. I advocate for mine.
08:31And we also, you know, together advocate for allyship and solidarity between groups as well.
08:36So shout out to you, Colin.
08:37All right. Thank you everybody so much for hanging out with me and checking out my essentials.
08:41I will see you guys next time.
08:45Hmm.
