Pope Leo has embarked on a historic first trip outside Italy, landing in Ankara for a high-stakes diplomatic and interfaith visit across Turkey.
On day one, he held a bilateral meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, discussing regional stability, migration, religious coexistence, and Turkey–Vatican relations. He also paid tribute at Ankara’s Atatürk Mausoleum. The Pope later travelled to Istanbul, where he sat down with Orthodox and Syriac Christian leaders to strengthen dialogue among Christian communities. Huge crowds gathered as he visited Istanbul’s Syriac Church and the historic Blue Mosque.
Tourists and residents lined the streets hoping to catch a glimpse of the pontiff as he toured major cultural and religious sites, marking one of the most closely watched papal trips in recent years.
