Pope Leo XIV arrived in Ankara on Thursday, marking the beginning of his first international trip since assuming the papacy. The visit, which also includes a stop in Lebanon, is being closely watched due to its diplomatic, interfaith and regional significance.
The pontiff was welcomed by Turkish officials at the capital’s airport before heading to a series of scheduled meetings focused on dialogue, humanitarian priorities, and the church’s engagement with communities in the region. His programme in Turkey includes talks with political and religious leaders as well as visits to key cultural and historical sites.
Following his time in Ankara, Pope Leo XIV is expected to travel to Lebanon, where he will continue discussions on stability, interreligious cooperation, and global humanitarian challenges. Church officials have described the trip as an opportunity to reinforce long-standing ties and address issues of shared concern.
