'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller chat with THR at the premiere and describe what it is like to see fans embrace the 'Sonic' franchise. Plus, they dish on the fun they had bringing the character of Shadow to life.

00:00Okay, I mean, this franchise is incredible.

00:02I mean, I'm thinking back to when we got introduced to,

00:04and I feel like a mea culpa about this because I feel bad calling him Ugly Sonic.

00:08But when we were introduced to Ugly Sonic,

00:11and then the fans have just, I think, defied the expectations of this franchise.

00:14I mean, how has it surprised you seeing how the fans embrace this franchise

00:18and where we are today with the third film?

00:19Well, I mean, why it's good sometimes that you don't always put the writers in charge of things

00:24is we didn't know if it was a good idea to change the design

00:27because you didn't know if the people complaining online were even going to see the movie in the first place.

00:32So the fact that they changed the design and that people really embraced the movie surprised even us.

00:38Yeah, people genuinely gave us a second chance,

00:41which kind of restored some of my faith in humanity, to be honest.

00:46It's amazing, and now this time around, I mean, we got the second one.

00:49We got Idris Elba as Knuckles, and then it's like, who can we get for the third one?

00:52And Keanu Reeves immediately says, yes, I heard he was the first choice.

00:55What does Shadow bring to this franchise?

00:57What can you tell me about this character?

00:59Well, because, you know, Knuckles was a tough guy,

01:01but I think certainly fans always knew that he was being misled

01:05and he was, you know, a softy inside.

01:08So it was fun to play with, you know, outwardly cuddly character

01:12who's a real serious, mean guy like Shadow.

01:16Shadow really brings a lot of intensity and kind of big operatic emotions

01:21and some real drama to the series, more so than any of our characters have before.

01:26Right, because, I mean, Knuckles is so funny.

01:28He's so deadpan.

01:29You know, Sonic is so ambitious.

01:32How would you describe Shadow's kind of attitude?

01:35He's serious.

01:36I mean, you can say Knuckles is serious as well,

01:39but Knuckles is, you know, he misunderstands things.

01:44Shadow understands everything perfectly, and he's just, he's dark.

01:49He's got a lot of anger issues he's going to have to work through.

01:52Are you familiar with the Maddie theory?

01:55What is the Maddie theory?

01:56Okay, so in the color theory, yes.

01:59No comment.

02:01I was going to say she's wearing pink in that poster over there.

02:04No comment.

02:06Well, let me ask you something you can't answer.

02:07What do you envision for the future of the franchise?

02:10I mean, it's funny.

02:12If it was up to us, we'd like some more outer space stuff.

02:17We've done a lot of exploring on Earth,

02:19and obviously Earth is Sonic's home, you know, true home, really.

02:23Adopted home.

02:25We just want to meet more characters and have adventures

02:27that are even bigger and more colorful,

02:30and just keep growing the franchise.
