00:00A new study from The Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center found that 25 percent of
00:05U.S. adults would consider using prescription weight loss medications without consulting a
00:11doctor first. The Hill reports, the primary reasons for cutting out the prescription requirement
00:17seem to be lower prices without prescription 18 percent, lack of insurance cover 15 percent,
00:24and inability to obtain a prescription 9 percent. Shenji Mayo, an Ohio State internal medicine
00:31physician, says, It's really important for those who want to lose weight to first discuss
00:36options with their doctor. It is not one-size-fits-all, and every medication can have risks
00:42and side effects. Weight loss medications like Ozempic or WeGovi were originally developed to
00:48regulate blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes, but can cause serious side effects,
00:55and the weight may return after they stop taking them. A particular buzz around the medication
00:59appears to attract those wanting to curb their appetite and slow the emptying of the stomach.
