00:00This episode of The Hollywood Reporter News is brought to you by American Airlines,
00:08Hollywood's favorite airline. Jimmy Fallon is opening up about the backlash he received
00:12for that moment when he ruffled now-president Donald Trump's hair. After The Tonight Show
00:17host's playful interview with Trump last fall, Fallon's behavior was swiftly criticized as
00:22normalizing a divisive candidate prone to making shocking statements and using hateful rhetoric.
00:27Fallon told The New York Times in a new profile,
00:30"...I didn't do it to humanize him. I almost did it to minimize him. I didn't think that
00:35would be a compliment. He did the thing that we all wanted to do."
00:38The host says the backlash led him to avoid Twitter and online news. He revealed,
00:42"...I'm a people pleaser. If there's one bad thing on Twitter about me, it will make me upset.
00:46So after this happened, I was devastated. I didn't mean anything by it. I was just trying to have fun."
00:52But Fallon didn't address the controversy on air. He said,
00:55"...I didn't talk about it, and I should have talked about it. I regret that."
