Diego Calva chatted with The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet of the 2023 Golden Globes.
Transcript
00:00How does it feel to be here tonight as a nominee for the first time?
00:04It's surreal. I've been watching the Golden Globes for a long time,
00:09and being here, not as a guest, being nominated, I feel super proud.
00:14And I'm really happy that I'm representing Babylon, this movie.
00:18It makes me feel like I already won.
00:21Babylon is a wild movie, but also lots of Hollywood history in there.
00:25What was your reaction when you first read the script?
00:27Well, before being an actor, I studied film direction, I studied script writing,
00:32so I'm very aware and common with the film industry and film history,
00:37and I just feel very lucky that I found Damien, or Damien, no, Damien found me, that's the truth.
00:43And I get to work with a cinephile.
00:46So we were talking about movies all day, it was beautiful.
00:50Did his knowledge surprise you?
00:53He's an encyclopedia of movies.
00:54I think he was more impressed with my knowledge, but yeah, it was beautiful to share different,
01:01for example, I shared a lot of Mexican films with him, and he shared a lot of European films with me.
01:06It was like, I don't know, I just feel very lucky.
01:09This was your first major English-language role.
01:11What was your first day like on set?
01:13Well, my first day on set, this is very special, and I will always remember it,
01:17but it was the first day of my character on a Hollywood set.
01:21So Damien arranged, I think, so my first day on a Hollywood set as an actor, as Diego,
01:27it was the first day of my character, so all these, like, surprise and all faces you're seeing with the character,
01:32they were all for real.
01:34Did you get any advice from Brad or Margot?
01:37Both. With Margot, more than advice, I got something very special that is love, you know,
01:45and she really took care of me, and she really shared a lot with me, and she was like,
01:49I will always be grateful.
01:52And Brad told me something very beautiful, and it's like, as an actor, the only thing you have is your craft,
01:56and we have to protect that.
01:58Margot really goes full throttle throughout the whole movie.
02:01For you working with her, what was it like witnessing that?
02:03Every day working with her, I had to unblock, like, a next level of acting.
02:10I really believe that I became an actor working with her and working with Damien.
02:15She's just a force. She's fearless, and I really hope I learned that, you know,
02:20to be more brave and to be fearless.
02:22She's fearless.
