A shocking case of honour killing has surfaced from Basti, Uttar Pradesh, where a 20-year-old woman was murdered by her brother for speaking to her boyfriend. According to police, the accused Manish, with help from his mother Nirmala Devi, tied the victim’s hands and feet, packed her in a sack, and placed her inside the trunk of their car. He then left for Gonda along with his cousin, Muskan.
On the way, Manish strangled his sister. After reaching Gonda, he dumped her on a deserted roadside and allegedly ran his car over her. Believing she was dead, he fled. The body was recovered on 17 November, following which a murder case was registered.
Gonda SP Vineet Jaiswal formed five investigation teams. CCTV footage showing the accused’s vehicle helped trace the route. After a 13-day probe, police detained Manish, who confessed to killing his sister because she was talking to a boy.
Police have arrested both the mother and the son, while the cousin remains absconding. Officials confirmed that the murder took place on 16 November in the Tarabganj police station area.
The victim, Anuradha, a resident of Parsa Jagir in Basti, was a graduate student. Her elder sister is also pursuing studies, while her elder brother works as a stonemason in Pune.
On the day of the incident, Manish returned from Gorakhpur and saw Anuradha speaking to a boy on the phone, leading to an argument. Later that night, he broke her phone, tied her up with a rope provided by his mother, and put her in a sack before driving off with Muskan.
During the journey, he strangled her to silence her. After failing to reach Ayodhya due to road construction, he travelled towards Gonda via Dubaulia–Vishesharganj, refuelled at Nawabganj, and finally ran her over near PD Dam in Bangaon before fleeing towards Basti.
