00:00We need to go to Earth now. We've been hiding here too long. Let's go to our rightful home!
00:06This episode of The Hollywood Reporter News is brought to you by American Airlines,
00:10Hollywood's favorite airline.
00:12Inhumans didn't exactly have a heroic start in its exclusive theatrical run over Labor Day
00:17weekend, several weeks ahead of its TV premiere. The forthcoming drama series from ABC and Marvel
00:22Television is produced in partnership with IMAX and, in a groundbreaking deal, launched this
00:27weekend in 676 IMAX theaters around the globe, grossing an estimated $2.6 million.
00:34That included an underwhelming $1.5 million from 393 theaters in North America.
00:40Adding slightly more salt to The Inhuman's Wound, the comic book drama was beat by a special
00:4540th anniversary release of Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which earned
00:50$2.6 million from 901 locations. The first two episodes were shot partially with IMAX cameras
00:56and featured special scenes designed just for the 75-minute release. IMAX was hoping to benefit
01:02from the end-of-the-summer box office slowdown by delivering a Marvel-branded drama to fanboys.
01:07To be clear, Inhumans is a Marvel TV show and is not connected to Marvel Studios, home of the
01:12Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. On paper, the idea of using a theatrical release to cut through the
01:18cluttered fall TV landscape is smart and bold, but in reality, it didn't work out for Inhumans,
01:23which stars Anson Mount and Sarinda Swan. Box office analyst Jeff Bach of Exhibitor Relations said,
01:29I just don't think the average moviegoer knew what this was, and if they did, certainly didn't know
01:34it was debuting in theaters before its TV debut.
01:36Inhumans premieres on ABC on September 29th as part of the network's new Friday night lineup.
01:42The first two episodes will be expanded and feature an 84-minute runtime as a way to offer
01:47something new for die-hard Marvel fans who saw it in theaters.
