00:07Star Trek Discovery is going to live long and prosper on CBS All Access.
00:12The network's subscription video-on-demand platform has renewed the show for a second season.
00:17But the series, which underwent a showrunner change and several delays, will likely not return until 2019.
00:23The Star Trek Discovery premiere set a new record for subscriber sign-ups in a single day, week and month for CBS All Access.
00:31In just six episodes, Star Trek Discovery has driven subscriber growth, critical acclaim and huge global fan interest for the first premium version of this great franchise, said Marc Debevoise, president and CEO at CBS Interactive.
00:45The new incarnation of this franchise had a tough two-year road to screen.
00:49It was originally set to premiere in January 2017, but the drama starring The Walking Dead's Sonequa Martin-Green was delayed to May.
00:57And then showrunner Brian Fuller exited the series to focus on his star show, American Gods, at which point longtime collaborators Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts took over.
01:07Recognizing the scope of the show, executive producer Alex Kurtzman went to CBS Corp. CEO Leslie Moonves asking to delay the series a second time.
01:16The drama wound up launching September 24th with its premiere on CBS before moving to CBS All Access in week two.
01:23While CBS All Access has not confirmed a return date or episode count for season two, Kurtzman told The Hollywood Reporter that a second season would ideally return on the early side of 2019.
01:34Kurtzman noted that every episode takes three to four months, including production and VFX.
01:39Meanwhile, the executive producer says he and his writing staff already have an idea for season two.
01:44We have a big idea that emerged mid to late season one for something we want to do for season two.
01:50That's now become the spine of what we want to do for season two, Kurtzman told THR.
