During his appearance on Seth Meyers' show, the 76-year-old actor said that he would sometimes be tapped on the shoulder by the movement coach on 'The Irishman' and reminded that he was playing a 39-year-old in that scene.
Transcript
00:00Is it harder, looking at it now, is it harder to be older and play a younger actor?
00:05That's the harder version.
00:06Yes, it's harder.
00:08Robert De Niro is opening up about the physical challenges of his role in
00:12The Irishman. The actor dropped by late night with Seth Meyers on Tuesday to
00:16discuss Netflix's highly praised crime drama The Irishman, also starring
00:20Al Pacino and Joe Pesci, among a host of other Hollywood A-listers.
00:24When asked by Meyers what was harder, being younger and playing older, or being
00:28older and playing younger, De Niro admitted that the latter was harder all the way.
00:32There are certain things I took for granted because, like, the physical
00:37spryness of somebody younger than myself.
00:41The actor also explained that there was a movement coach on the set who would
00:44help him adjust his posture to that of a younger man.
00:47If I'm sitting here like this, you'd come behind and tap me on the shoulder, you're 39.
00:51Sit up straight.
00:53Meanwhile, the actor admits the adjustment of his weight was largely achieved in post-production
00:57through VFX. Elsewhere, the veteran actor also discussed working with his longtime
01:01collaborator Martin Scorsese. De Niro says the two had long been looking for another
01:06film to work on together and eventually came across the book by Charles Brandt,
01:10I Heard You Paint Houses, saying he instantly connected with the material.
