00:00Timothee Chalamet is sharing that he previously had doubts about becoming an actor.
00:06The 29-year-old actor grew up in New York City, and while he was around many creative
00:11up-and-coming performers, he recognized the struggles many actors endure when trying to
00:16make it. Speaking with Anderson Cooper on a recent episode of 60 Minutes, Cooper and
00:20Chalamet visited a building in the theater district that Chalamet lived in, a rent-subsidized
00:25building filled with artists.
00:26This building truthfully made me scared of acting, because it's a tough lifestyle and
00:32a lot of people, you know, aren't doing fantastically.
00:38Cooper mentioned to Chalamet that he assumed this atmosphere would encourage him to pursue
00:42the arts. Instead, it had the opposite effect for Chalamet.
00:48Even though his family was immersed in the arts, his mom was a dancer, and his sister
00:53Pauline Chalamet also acted and is most known for her role in the sex lives of college girls.
00:58The Oscar nominee shared with Cooper that his dad told him to, quote, be normal.
01:03It's no place for a child. It really isn't. You know, cameras and people going, hey, do the
01:08thing where we recognize you as cute in your own head.
01:11However, Chalamet ultimately decided to pursue the arts and has become a household name, receiving
01:17two Oscar nominations so far for his work in 2017's Call Me By Your Name, and most recently,
01:22last year's A Complete Unknown, where he played Bob Dylan and received rave reviews for his
01:27performance.
01:28You can be beautiful or you can be ugly, but you can't be plain.
