02:25If nothing else, just throw the ball away and give yourself an opportunity to hopefully get

02:32like all that momentum is on the Rams side.

03:45Look, and don't lose the urgency.
03:46They've run the ball extremely well.
03:48They've been able to get the ball in the perimeter a little bit to tight ends and executing some
03:51screens.
03:52Where they can really make some hay, though, is they have to get McMillan and Leegett involved.
03:56They only have one target between the two of those guys, zero catches so far.
03:59So they need some bigger plays with those two big receivers.
04:02And the rain's starting to come down a little bit.
04:04We'll see how that affects the play calling.

04:08Yeah, talking to Coach Canales at the half, he said, for his defense, we've got to limit
04:12some of these explosive plays.
04:13Get the pass rush going.
04:15He said, the plays that they have gotten, Matthew Stafford's been able to sit back there
04:18and go to work defensively as well.
04:20He said, we've got to slow down some of their running game.
04:23As for his offense, we have seen a little bit more of a mix from their two running backs,
04:27Jericho, Dowdle, and Chuba Hubbard telling me that's just how it played out.
04:30But we've got to see more from them in the second half.
04:32They got a few decent carries in there.
04:35Dowdle had a 17-yarder.
04:36Hubbard had an 8-yarder.

06:37is getting themselves into third manageable situations.
06:39But so far today, it's been pretty good.
06:42The Rams defense has come up with four straight stops
06:44on third down, looking for one here.
06:46It is Hubbard trying to navigate.
06:55He's going to get stopped and keep on churning.

07:29to find their creases.

07:38Behind this offensive line of Carolina,
07:40which has been in flux all season long.

07:46Robert Hunt, a guy they paid a lot of money to,
07:48playing a right guard.
07:49He's out after two.
07:50Brady Christensen, who's played every position, comes in.
07:53He ends up tearing an Achilles against Buffalo.
07:55Chandler Zavala just went back to the IR for the second time.
07:58Cade Mays, their normal center, is out yet again.
08:02Look, it's a credit to them, though.
08:04I mean, they're a big front.
08:05And coming off the last game, you know,
08:07they said it just like Rico Dowdle was saying.

08:10You know, use our size and strength to our advantage,
08:12especially against this defensive front,
08:15which is a lot of nickel and dime defense.

09:17And look, Coker is one of these guys that I really think can be a threat in this game.
09:21There's so much attention that goes to McMillan outside and to Legette outside.
09:26But Coker's the guy who can work the interior of the field.
09:29He's a big target.
09:30And a lot of time, he's getting the third or fourth DB.
09:33It's their second-longest pass play of the day.
09:35Back to the toss and Dowdle.
09:38And some shifting maneuvering to take it for about five or so.
09:43Carolina's been able to dent the defense inside.
09:45A lot of these interior runs have just been two, three, four yards a pop.
09:49But they have had some big play opportunities with the ball on the perimeter.
09:54You get the defense sometimes so locked in on just gap integrity
09:59and making sure that they're plugging up the inside of the defense.
10:03And some of these runs on the perimeter,
10:06if you can get the numbers out there and cover up these blocks,
10:09that provide big run opportunities for these backs.

11:56Like, this is the matchup that you're going to like all game long.
11:59But Coker is a big target.
12:02Going up against Forbes, who's played really, really well for the Rams.
12:07But, man, you just get one step on him.
12:08And, again, I think it's the third or, you know, fourth and short that makes those DBs just play a little bit more aggressive inside.
12:16You know, most times you're getting quick slants and you're getting the intermediate stuff.
12:21You're not necessarily ready for somebody just to run by you.
12:24So I love the play call.
12:25I love the aggressiveness with Bryce Young.
12:28And Coker's been the weapon so far for this offense.
12:34With these weird conditions, Fitzgerald will make it a three-point game.
12:39Three big play touchdowns for Carolina today.
12:42They have the pick six from Jackson.
12:43And then two on offense, including this one to Coker.

12:54But they both went to Coker for big plays.
12:57Yeah, he's been the guy in this game so far.
12:59One was that key third down, you know, kind of cross-face interior of the field.
13:03And then, obviously, that fourth down where, look, I just love the aggressiveness of the call.
13:08I love the fact that they're just, they're telling this Rams defense, man, we are going to grind it out, but then take advantage of the opportunities when they are there.
13:15And that's why they have the lead right now.

13:58An interesting factor with the rain coming down here in Charlotte.

14:04And, indeed, it is Kyron Williams trying to sneak through.
14:07He's marked down after a gain of about four.
14:10We talked with Sean McVay this week.
14:12Chris Shula said a very similar thing, and I think that's the mantra.
14:15Humility is only one play or one game away.
14:18I don't think there was any sense that they were going to take Carolina lightly.
14:22That's the attitude of a winning team.
14:24Now you're down by three, getting tested.
14:26Now's the time to go prove it again.
14:27It is.
14:28There's always something to prove.
14:29You're only as good as your next performance.
14:30And you also have to recognize the situation that the team is that you're playing.
14:35And Carolina is playing for a lot.
14:36And coming off a very disappointing loss on Monday night, you could sense that there was
14:40a great urgency with what Carolina needed to do today.
14:44And he does it to the 17-year veteran Stafford for a loss of eights.
14:56So far today, Stafford has seen virtually zero pressure on any of these pass plays, especially under center.
15:05But they just simply bring a Mike linebacker and the nickel safety, and he comes uncovered and makes a play.
15:14That's what you need in a game like this.
15:16Now you force him into a third and long.
15:17The rain's coming down.
15:19The crowd's engaged.
15:23Line to gain is the 38.
15:30Stafford down the field for Adams and incomplete.
15:33He had Mike Jackson in coverage.
15:39And it brings up fourth down.
15:41First punt for the Rams coming.

15:45You're going to go to one of your go-to guys.
15:48The ball just ends up a little high.
15:50But, you know, this is the situation, obviously, Carolina wants to be in,
15:55where they're able to have eyes on the quarterback, keeping the ball in front of them.
15:59They've already been able to react to some of these passes to get deflections, get interceptions.

17:35Cam Newton had the all-time Carolina single-game passing record
17:39until Bryce Young broke it a couple of weeks ago against Atlanta.
17:44You see what he's done today.
17:45Trying to get a little bit more deep throwing action,
17:48something that I believe Canales has wanted to find spots for.
17:51It's been hard to come by.
17:53Exact same formation that they just lined up in.
17:58And once again, it's a Hubbard run.
18:01Good second effort by Hubbard, but only about a yard and a half
18:04on the play.
18:09This was the theme in the previous drive.
18:12Two consecutive runs.
18:14Gets you to third and short.
18:17And we've talked about it.
18:19When they've had upset wins against Dallas and Green Bay,
18:21the run game had to be an important part of it.
18:25Possessions had to be an important part of it.
18:27There's a formula to getting upset wins.
18:29And it takes a ton of discipline is what it does.
18:31You just can't get overzealous or greedy.
18:34You just have to trust the fact that we're going to get to a lot of third downs.

18:45It looked like they had the right personnel out there for Chris Shula's defense.

19:50And what I see with him is every run today has just been falling forward, falling forward, moving the pile.
19:59Now, the 13 plays that the Panthers have run in their two drives in the second half.

20:10Falling forward for maybe another yard or two, Shuma Hubbard on first down.
20:14Yeah, you know, for a defense that typically incorporates so much dime and nickel, I don't think I've seen maybe one or two snaps of dime this entire game,
20:23which just tells me that the Rams really respect this run game.
20:26They're keeping two linebackers on the field almost exclusively to try to stop it.
20:30And unfortunately, they just haven't been able to do that yet.
20:32Does Quinton Lake's absence have a little bit to do with that?
20:34It absolutely does, just because he's such a good edge player.
20:37He's the key to a lot of their blitz packages.
20:39He's really a quarterback on the back end.
20:43One second down.
20:45So now Young is going to try to go through the air.
20:47He'll throw it to Evans near the sticks.
20:49Puts his head down and has the first down.
20:54Once again, this offensive line is just setting the tone in this game.
20:59You know, it's been a lot of the run, but that's what sets up these opportunities where, look, this is a great play.
21:07When you think, hey, we just threw it to the flat, we got three, four yards, that's a great play on this drive.
21:12Because you're mixing the run with the drop back pass on third down.
21:18And you're just turning clock.
21:19You're turning clock.
21:20So any positive play that moves chains for the Panthers is great.
21:24Screen pass against some pressure that time.
21:30And here comes the great job in space by Cameron Kinchins as he makes the stop.
21:35Let's go down to Christina Pink for an update.

21:38Yeah, we saw Byron Young running to the Rams locker room.
21:40No injury to report.
21:42He was dealing with some cramping, but he expected to come back in the game.
21:45That's a good sign for Sean McVay's defense.
21:47Obviously, that's a player that you can ill afford to lose.
21:50Just one of the elite edge players in the NFL, Byron Young.
21:52Yeah, and the combination with him and Jared Burse as well.
21:55You know, they just create these bookings for this defense, both run and pass.
21:59Just another couple of those draft picks that Les Snead and this Rams front office has continued to hit on.
22:09From shot position, the one in on second down.
22:12And Hubbard knifing his way through.
22:14Defenders and churning to get to the sticks.
22:22They're just running behind the left side of this line.

22:32And you give it to Hubbard, who, man, he is just having a knack for finding these creases.
22:36And then when he puts his pads on you, he's getting another two, three, four yards after contact.
22:44That ground game for Carolina has picked up eight first downs on run plays.
22:51Hubbard averaging just about five yards a pop, better than league average.
22:5430th run of the day for Carolina, and it's a good one on first down for Hubbard for nine.
23:08We always talk about the Rams, right, being one of those great offenses where the receivers always block.
23:14That has to be key in the run game.
23:15Panthers getting their receivers in the block game, too.
23:18Look, it's one of the things that shows up on film with Jalen Coker.
23:21Yeah, as I was watching film, and obviously so much attention to Leggett and McMillan,
23:26but Coker's the guy doing a lot of that dirty work inside, getting those blocks.
23:30And what that does also is open up pass opportunities for him.
23:33But I can't say enough about just the philosophy that Carolina is coming to this game with.
23:38And look, we thought it was going to be Rico Dowda, but it's become Chuba Hubbard.
23:43They both carried it 14 times.
23:45Hubbard's had the better of it so far, and he moves the chains yet again.
23:48And another rushing first down for the Panthers.
23:51And that clock continues to churn, approaching 70 seconds for the third quarter.
23:57That's really amazing.
23:58They've dominated this third quarter.
24:00You know, they've had it two drives and really chewed up a ton of clock,
24:04but just run a lot of plays.
24:05And it's been, you know, 90% run plays.
24:08And just wearing down this defensive front.
24:20But now it's Dowda as Hubbard gets a breather.
24:23They drop winding.
24:29With the snap off and give it to Rico Dowda.
24:32A decent run on first down.
24:35The formula to try to pull off an upset is very much on display in this third quarter for Carolina.
24:41Came in as a two-score underdog against one of the hottest teams in the NFL, the Rams.

24:51It's unfortunate that we're going to go to the corner.
24:53In fact, it looks like Carolina might even just want to run a play
24:55because they've got so much momentum going.
24:57You just don't want them to stop.

25:01They've had the ball for more than 13 of the 15 minutes in this third quarter,
25:06which comes to a close in rainy Charlotte, North Carolina.
