00:00:36And he's currently running down in 19th, having pitted twice in this race already.
00:00:42And he's going to have to go into the pits at least once more because he can't go to the end of the race on his current set of medium tyres.
00:00:52So Max has got to get two sets of tyres through 25 laps, as has most of the field.
00:00:56So that's the chance.
00:01:00We go as far as lap 41.

00:01:04So that's the chance they have if the Red Bull starts running out of tyres towards the end.
00:01:11But they've got a clear Antonelli and Sainz as well.
00:01:15Shouldn't be too difficult given the tyre delta.
00:01:18And in any event, Sainz and Antonelli will get out of the road on lap 32.
00:01:22And that's the thing, he's gaining Oscar Piastri on Kimi Antonelli now, just under 2.2 seconds behind.
00:01:30But 20 laps Antonelli, Sainz and Verstappen have done on their current tyres.
00:01:35They will be getting out of the way and pitting in a few laps.
00:01:40Any time between now and that next 24, next four laps.
00:01:44And I think that's why Oscar was on the telephone there saying, you know, what am I going to do with these two back, well not back markers, two guys I've got to pass here.
00:01:53So at the moment, I think McLaren are tracking second and third.
00:01:57It's just a question whether they can close Verstappen down with tyres.
00:02:00Well, let's see, 7 tenths on the last lap, advantage Piastri over Verstappen, about 18 seconds to try and make up.
00:02:08The gap to Kimi Antonelli is already down to one and a half seconds, he'll get DRS in a moment.
00:02:13Remember that DRS train that we were talking about, that long, long train?
00:02:17Well, that's just evaporated now, no one within DRS as the tyres just start to drop off, drop off a little bit.
00:02:25Here comes Piastri then gaining on Kimi Antonelli, but he's gaining at the wrong time here, Martin, because he can't get past into turn one.

00:03:03They're involved in a very tight scrap with Haas for seventh and also racing balls for sixth.
00:03:11And he's currently ahead of Isaac Hadjar.
00:03:13And there's a lot of millions on the table.
00:03:15The higher up you finish in the championship going into this weekend, Aston Martin were, what, just a couple of points, one point behind that Haas team.
00:03:23So Oscar Piazza is going to get more traffic than Lando Norris is because Norris is not going to catch those two before they pit on lap 32, whereas Oscar's in the turbulent air.
00:03:36This is for position, so he won't be getting any help from Blue Flags or anybody else, least of all the drivers he's racing.
00:03:44You can see how the car slides across the road in the final corner.
00:03:47He'll have the DRS open.
00:03:49Is there a lunge at the end of this straight available?
00:03:51Well, he will want to clear Antonelli as fast as he can, but he's got to be a bit cautious.
00:03:56He wants to stay on the road, but look how he's gaining.
00:03:58And there was absolutely no need for caution whatsoever.
00:04:02By the time he slammed on the brakes, Antonelli had to back out of that one, and Piastri up into third.
00:04:08It was a lunge, and he had the confidence in the grip, but this is vintage Piastri again.
00:04:12We haven't seen this for half a dozen races.
00:04:15That's the confidence that we saw from Oscar Piastri earlier on in the year.
00:04:19We didn't see it on the restart in Brazil, for example, but just I'm taking that place off you.
00:04:25And that was a key move for him as Lando Norris gets his first warning for track limits at turn 10.
00:04:31Well, there's Aussie flags and Aussie fans in the grandstands.
00:04:34They will absolutely love that one, and everyone's on their feet,
00:04:37even if they've got a red ball top on as Piastri gets past Antonelli.

00:09:34What was a bit unsafe was that George came very close to the Aston Martin chief mechanic,

00:10:32And you would think on the medium tyre, he should be quicker than Max.

00:10:37So Max is 7.6 up to Leeds.

00:13:41I hate to weigh up, but the best idea is.
00:13:43In terms of trying to get a safety car.
00:13:46Or just beating him on pace.

00:13:51So, is that 25 laps minus one, 24 laps.
00:13:56What McLaren have got, of course, Martin, is the flexibility right at the end.

00:14:04That would gain them a bit more pace in the final stint.
00:14:07I think Max's pace is such at the moment that I'm not sure they've got anything left in their toolbox.

00:14:21And when you go off here, Bernie Collins, and you hit the gravel, it can be pretty unforgiving.

00:14:40And both of those used soft, if my mathematics is correct.
00:14:44They can both put on at this stage because they've got 22 or 23 laps available on those.
00:14:48So, reasonably good soft.
00:14:50They should be able, from this point, to have a safety car window open in order to get that soft tyre on.
00:14:55But, like you say, I think they'll continue to extend.
00:14:59They now have enough gap between the cars that they could stack as well.
00:15:03So, they could bring them both on that 25 laps then, if they need it to.
00:15:06They've got to think again, though, about Saits and Antonelli a little bit later on.

00:16:15very much in his own hands, of course, going into Abu Dhabi.
00:16:19He still would have if he won in Abu Dhabi,
00:16:21but a third-place finish here and next week
00:16:24guarantees Lando Norris the championship
00:16:26no matter what anyone else does.
00:16:28Oscar Piastri has now cleared Carlos Sainz and Kimi Antonelli
00:16:32in terms of the time he'd lose by pitting again.
00:16:36So, they're not a threat, unless it's a really slow pit stop,
00:16:40for Piastri.
00:16:41They are still a threat for Lando Norris.
00:16:44And very much a threat for Lando Norris
00:16:46is the pace here of Max Verstappen.
00:16:48Now, Verstappen, of course, was ahead of Norris
00:16:50before he pitted behind the safety car in lap 7.
00:16:52And the Red Bull is a much better car here this evening,
00:16:56as happened in the Grand Prix last year,
00:16:58than it was in the sprint last night.

00:17:01And the hard compound tyre looking just fine this evening as well,

00:17:05I know he's got to get those through 25 laps,
00:17:09but he didn't have a problem with the medium,
00:17:11so he won't have a problem with the hard,
00:17:12especially as the track keeps rubbering in,
00:17:14especially as he's now getting through his 100-plus kilos of fuel as well.
00:17:19And he's sitting pretty there in current third place,

00:17:27like a thoroughbred racehorse when they loosen the reins,
00:17:31when that McLaren is going to start charging away.

00:17:59Norris basically has got to gain 22 seconds
00:18:02in the next 17 laps.

00:18:09So this is more than an advantage for Verstappen at the moment.

00:18:17come in a little bit on the safety car windows for that.

00:18:21if Piastro was to stop under a safety car,
00:18:23he would still come out behind Verstappen.
00:18:25So Verstappen's matching the pace largely at this stage,
00:18:28so they're not opening a safety car window.
00:18:30So even if they had a safety car,
00:18:32they would still be coming out behind Verstappen at this stage.
00:18:36And that doesn't look like changing any time soon.
00:18:38And I don't think the soft tyres of everything we've seen
00:18:41would have enough pace.
00:18:43But that's what McLaren are in their hopes on, I think, at this stage.

00:18:46Sainz and Antonelli at this stage of the Grand Prix
00:18:49are faster than Norris.

00:18:50Not that far off Piastro and Verstappen as it happens.

00:19:31to finishing second and third ahead of his team-mate
00:19:35is more points that he wouldn't have scored
00:19:37to try and close his team-mate down ahead of Abitavik.
